Develop Mode Auto Adjustments

Hello,
When I am loading RAW files in to LR, in the Develop mode they start off as a pretty flat image (as I shot them) but then LR slowly adjusts each photos as it loads which looks like it is bumping the saturation and contrast then lowering the exposure.
What are these auto adjustments and how can I turn them off? I would rather edit my images as shot in camera, not after LR makes its own adjustments without my help.

This doesn't happen in Bridge
The difference: Lightroom is a raw editor, Bridge is not.
So, Bridge shows you what the camera did (if unedited raw file) instead of what it would look like with Lightroom edits. And Lightroom edits have to start somewhere, and that somewhere CAN'T be the same as the jpeg, or the same as another raw editing software (they use different settings, different software, different starting point..).
Don't get me wrong: I think Adobe should have better support for displaying embedded preview / sidecar jpegs (which is what Bridge does), and have an option to detect in camera profile setting and select a "nearest fit" Lightroom profile, but none of that will change the basic "deal" - different software, different settings, different starting point...
Note: this may seem odd to you now, but it's how all proprietary raw editors work, i.e. all those except the camera manufacturer's own (or those using the camera manufacturer's raw-rendering toolkit under the hood, instead of it's own), which emulates in-camera settings pretty-much exactly - no others can interpret a custom picture style, granted some may try to start with a somewhat closer look.
To review: all proprietary raw software does the same thing: interpret raw data according to invented algorithms and settings. That's what Lightroom software does, and that's what Capture NX2 does (and that's what your camera firmware does to come up with the jpegs), but they are different software, with different algorithms, which use different settings.
So your choices are:
* shoot jpeg
* use the camera manufacturer's software to process, or
* wean yourself from custom camera styles and learn to setup Lightroom processing instead.
PS - I recommend the later. Actually, you can use a plugin to somewhat translate camera settings to Lightroom settings, but I don't recommend doing it, because it tends to prolong your dependency on camera settings, rather than wean.
My advice? - Learn to use Lightroom (and get it set up optimally for your druthers) for post-production, and forget about camera settings whilst shooting (except for exposure and focusing etc., of course). Then, delete all the custom profiles you created in your camera, for therapeutic purposes .

  • Develop Mode 2nd Monitor not showing edit adjustments

I am using Lightroom 4.1 RC2 on a Windows 7 64 bit system with dual monitors. When I am in the develop mode and make edit adjustments on any setting the 2nd monitor does not update. If I move to another image then come back the image is updated but it does not work in real time. I have never had this problem before and it worked fine in Lightroom V4.0

    It's a bug in LR4.1 RC2.
The workaround seems to be to increase the size of the Standard Preview setting (File Handling tab of the Catalog Settings)....go up at least one setting (e.g. if it's currently 1024 change it to 1440 or 1680). No need to recreate your previews, just increasing the setting seems to work in most cases.
You might also, without realising it, be suffering a fairly dramatic memory leak which is also stopped by changing the settings.

  • Brightness and Fill adjustments absend from Develop mode

Recently upgraded to LR 5 and - when in Develop mode - am no longer presented with the Brightness and Fill selections.  Am I missing something or is there a configuration change I can make?

Brightness and Fill are from legacy process versions (2003 & 2010).
The current process version (2012) doesn't have them.

  • Allow editing metadata in develop mode

My biggest dissatisfaction about Lightroom right now is the distinction between Library and Develop modes or views. I would dearly love to get rid of the "quick develop" panel - perhaps make that something that could be displayed via the application prefs - and put the keywords and metadata panels into the develop module. I find myself frequently wanting to switch from one module to another - to add a keyword while I'm adjusting the exposure, or to jump over to the editable histogram while I'm sorting out the keepers from the losers. I don't currently use the Web or Print modules at all, so I just ignore them.

Quick Develop serves 2 purposes - adjustment of lots of images in increments, and adjustment so you can compare and evaluate images (eg when you've been bracketting). It also uses cached data, while Develop accesses the original image data - so things happen quicker.
I didn't like QD at first either, but I'd recommend you give it more of a chance and don't delete it (you can Alt/Opt click it). Secondly, Ctrl/Cmd click the Sync button in Develop so you enter Auto Sync mode - this makes Develop adjustments apply to all selected items and great reduces the back and forth between Library and Develop.

  • Image in Develop mode - Orange Tint

I'm having an issue with my images when I switch to Develop mode.  There is an orange tint that appears in each image while I'm tweaking it.  Sometimes the tint is minor like the example I've attached and other times it makes it very difficult to edit the image.  When I return to Library mode or export the image it's normal.
I've attached the same image in both Library and Develop mode to illustrate the issue.  I've highlighted the problem areas with Yellow call-outs in the image that's open in Develop mode (note no adjustments have been made the tint appears as soon as I switch to Develop).
My system uses two video drivers (they are current as of today):
Intel HD Graphics 4000, Driver version 10.18.10.3621
NVIDIA NVS 5200M, Driver version 340.84

  • Why are my processed images now sharper in the Library mode than in Develop mode (LR5)?

In LR 5. Recently I noticed my processed images are sharper in the Library mode than in the Develop mode. This makes doing adjustments difficult because I can't really tell the effect of the adjustments.
    PC, i7, 24GB RAM.
I've tried purging the Camera Raw cache. It's been suggested to purge the Preview cache but I cannot find the Preview cache file. It's also been suggested to clear the Preferences but those file don't show up in a search either even though my PC search is set up to show hidden files and folders.
    Any solutions?

Images can be different between the camera-rendered preview you see before Import and the default Adobe rendering, but after import the thumbnail in the LR grid view shouldn’t be a different tone than the image in the main area.  Is that what you’re saying you’re seeing?
Can you show us a screenshot with both the thumbnail filmstrip and the central area visible as well as the histogram?

  • Develop Mode:  Why Do Some Controls Do Nothing

I recently edited a 150 photos.  I notice that certain controls in develop mode have no impact when I make adjustments. A good example is Sharpening. There are no changes to the Histogram (you can tell by the motion) or in the image swatch shown above Sharpening.  Changes to chromatic aberration and noise reduction also have no impact.  Is this a function of the camera, RAW files, or what?  This isn't a complaint.  I am just curious whether my experience is universal (which I doubt because why would Lightroom have the controls) or a result of my camera, lens, camera setting, or subject matter choices.
    Thanks

You need to be view an image at 100% pixel view or higher to see the effects
of the adjustments you listed. This is by design.

  • Camera Raw 3.7 no longer supports per slider auto adjustments

    Nobody else resent this "improvement"?
Now the only way to have the image properly scaled (while not affecting everyting else by the automatic guesswork) is to have the settings in custom non-automatic default and then one has to use the Exposure slider manually with the aid of the Highlights Clipping Warning, for each and every image.
Compared to the 3.6 where this is fully automatic and works very very well.

sorry for the confusion, it is indeed shift double click and double click to change from auto to standard.
If you use your own created standard setting both automatic and standard on top of the sliders are blue colored and visible. Using auto does gray out the auto setting and using standard does gray out this option which is logical because you have to click on the highlighted option to change.
So this is the way to see in what mode you are.

    Camera Raw 3.7 Now Available
    Tom Hogarty - 09:36pm Feb 18, 2007 Pacific
The Photoshop Camera Raw 3.7 plug-in is now available on adobe.com.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
Important Notes Regarding Camera Raw 3.7
There are several significant changes to Camera Raw 3.7 in how it handles auto and default settings:
Applying auto settings by default is no longer controlled on a model by model basis, but instead there is a single global preference checkbox Apply auto tone adjustments that controls this adjustment for all camera models at once.
Camera Raw 3.7 no longer supports per slider auto adjustments. One Auto control at the top of the panel now sets the Exposure, Shadows, Brightness, and Contrast sliders to their auto values. The Default control at the top of the panel sets these same four sliders to their default values. The keyboard shortcut for the Auto control is CMD/CTRL-U.
The keyboard shortcut for the Default control is CMD/CTRL-R.
Double clicking on a slider to set that single slider to its default value.
Shift double clicking on a slider to set that single slider to its auto value.
Previously, default image settings could only be applied per camera model. Camera Raw 3.7 can now:
-Apply default image settings specific to a camera serial number
-Apply default image settings specific to a camera ISO setting
The additional criteria are located in the Camera Raw preferences.
The default settings (including the global auto preference) are now shared with the DNG Converter.
The DNG Converter requires OS X 10.3.9 as a minimum operating system.

Yes, they do.  You can't judge sharpening at less than 1:1, and there are differences between the way Develop renders and Library does.  Exported images will look like they look in Develop.

  • Corruption in LR Develop mode

    Greetings,
I'm on a Mac Power PC running OS 10.5.5 with 6.5 GB RAM on LR 2.1. I am shooting with a Canon 1ds III on SanDisk Extreme IV 4.0 GB cards.
Sometimes I get a rainbow-colored corruption on part or most of an image while working with an image in the develop mode. I recently upgraded to LR 2.0 and was hoping that it would clear up what was happing in LR 1.0 but it has not.
The only good news is that when I restart the computer and then relaunch LR, the corruption disappears before my eyes. In other words, when the image is "loading" in LR's develop mode, the same corruption is there momentarily but then vanishes once the image has fully "loaded."
    Any thoughts?
Let me know if I can provide more information as I'm sure I have not provided enough. I have a screen capture I can email (or post if I knew how).
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hey Martin,
I can't get your first link to work but what I get is a square or rectangular-rainbow-digital gobbeldigook usually starting from the lower right corner of the image covering anywhere from 5% to 90% of the image.
At the moment, I'm exploring the possibility that mine is RAM-related. I'm able to recover the flawed images after a restart. This points me to a problem with my Mac or the LR software. I could be wrong so take this with a grain of salt.
Anyway, I purchased online (for a buck and change) "Memtest OS X". It checks your RAM for errors/flaws. After running the program, it turns out I have a bad RAM chip in my desktop machine and so I have of course removed it. So far, with working all day today on post, I have had no problems (knock wood). This is by no means final in my mind however and I'm going to continue to cross my fingers and hold my breath for a little while every time I open an image in the develop mode of LR.
I hope this might lead you somewhere as well. I'll report back later after I've had some time to test the waters.
    Any luck on your end?

  • How do I turn off ALL auto adjustments in Camera Raw?

    SUMMARY:
I am simply trying to open my images in Camera Raw (version 8.6.0.254) via Bridge CC exactly how they were shot in camera, with no auto adjustments whatsoever.  I already have all of the auto boxes unchecked in the Camera Raw Preferences dialogue box under Default Image Settings.  I am shooting raw on a Sony A7r.
    MORE INFO:
This discussion is not being created without prior research on how to solve it.  Hopefully there is a simple solution that I have overlooked and missed when looking for it.
I shoot my raw images flat on purpose.  The in-camera saturation is turned down, along with a lot of the other picture profile settings in the camera.
I use Bridge CC to sort though my images and make selects.  In Bridge, I have "Prefer Embedded" selected for my thumbnails in order to stop the auto processing to happen to the thumbnails there.
The problem is, as soon as I open my raw images in Camera Raw from Bridge, the auto adjustments kick in and the saturation and exposure are automatically adjusted.  I can't figure out how to stop Camera Raw from making adjustments to my raw images.  As stated above, all of the auto check boxes are unchecked in the Camera Raw Preferences.
When the "Command U" shortcut is pressed after an image is opened, it applies the auto settings, making it clear the Camera Raw thinks that nothing has been applied yet.  Toggling between "Camera Raw Defaults" and "Image Settings" in the side drop down menu does nothing either.
Below are two screen shots.  One of how the thumbnail looks in Bridge, desaturated and flat.  The other is how the image opens in Camera Raw with no user adjustments what so ever.  You can see how the saturation and exposure have been adjusted:
Bridge Preview - this is how the image was shot in camera.
Camera Raw - Straight after opening the file with no user adjustments.  You can clearly see the dramatic auto adjustments, but all of the sliders are set to default.
I would love to get some help with this, so I can see and work on my images as they were shot.  Im really hoping it is a stupid oversight on my part with an easy fix.  Thanks for the help.

As was already said: the camera's interpretation of the raw data is just one interpretation, and not the same as Adobe's. Don't confuse it with "exactly how they were shot", as this doesn't apply when shooting Raw. Granted it IS the manufacturer's interpretation, but you wouldn't be shooting Raw and using Adobe Camera Raw if you thought the manufacturer was always right.
One thing nobody has mentioned is Adobe's "baseline exposure" compensation factor. Camera Raw adjusts the default preview exposure by a factor of EV based on their measurements of the camera sensor. My present camera is boosted by 0.35EV and my last camera by 0.5EV. There is a way of determining this using EXIFTOOL, but I can't remember how to do it offhand. For the last few years, I have adjusted my own Camera Raw defaults by reversing this compensation, so it more closely matches the exposure I was expecting.
EDIT: here's the procedure, if you're interested. Re: Baseline Exposure

  • JDeveloper IDE: Developer Mode Error

    Hi All,
I am facing an issue after launcing JDEV through /jdevbin/NT/1223_db2dbg_17007206 (JDeveloper IDE for Release 12.2.3 Dev Build 2).
I am getting developer mode error after launcing my application. For the error to perish, we need to disable the same by :
Go Project Properties -> Oracle Applications -> Run Options and remove OADeveloperMode from the selected list.
However the OADeveloperMode option is not visible at project properties. Any idea on how to disable the option through any other means or any workarounds.
The profile “FND:Developer Mode” is already set to No in site level in environment. I am still seeing the Developer Mode error in jdev.
    Thanks in advance.

If you can please help me with suppressing the option how we used to do that earlier via jdev, then I can move ahead with my changes and test them.

  • Issue in Develop mode for embedding google map

    Hello,
I am facing an interesting issue in Develop mode for embedding google map html code (screenshot is attached)
The map rectangle showing almost same size box underneath filled in black, while in preview mode, it is working properly. I could not find the reason, where I am doing something wrong.
    Many thanks .

    Hi Muzeone,
Its a default behavior with every WYSIWYG HTML Designer or editor,
Reason :The black box which is appearing in the design view is because you might have tried increasing the size of the iframe thumbnail.
If you are using Iframe and using Insert HTML feature in MUSE, make sure when you paste the iframe code in MUSE, it creates a thumbnail in design view do not resize it in design view.
Size does not change the height and width of Iframe in MUSE as its being controlled by the codes that you are inserting.
The design view will only show you iframe height which is defined in the codes below that it will show a black box.
    Enjoy working with MUSE !!
