Developers are complaining OWB 10.2 is slow

Hi,
Our shop has been using OWB 10g Release 1. Recently I upgraded to OWB 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.31 per inventory). This week our developers began to toy with it. Today, the developers who use it are telling me everything is very slow, the Design Center, Control Center Manager and the Runtime Audit Browser, all of it. It is unusable! Very slow compared to OWB 10g R1.
I searched this forum for help.... and I see many folks are complaining about OWB 10.2 performance.
I have two questions:
1) If I patch our OWB installation from 10.2.0.1.31 to 10.2.0.2 can I expect an improvement in performance? Can anyone comment on their own experiences please?
2) I saw someone wrote in this forum "if you have upgraded to 10gr2 I have pity on you...most of us are waiting until september unless we have dual core client pcs and stupider management..." Can someone tell me what is happening in September?
Note: Our environment meets the minimum requirements per the Warehouse Builder Installation and Administration Guide
Thanks,
Phany

Hi
We also had same issue. So, we upgraded our hardware
1GB RAM at client and 4GB RAM at server.
2.5 Ghz Processor.
Also, we optimized repository. Now, i donot know what kind of optimization was done as it was done by our DBA.
This improved the performance OWB considerably.
Also, try using OEM for some statistics. This might help in identifying the performance related issues.
Im not sure, but I dont think that the number of mappings can affect the performance. The Slowness of OWB can be attributed to(as per my uderstanding)
1 Java GUI(since you have a very good hardware combibnation it shouldnt be main problem
2. Services/sessions : If the there are too many sessions or services running on the same server which are eating into the Memory available, then the performance would reduce.
I request others too correct me if im wrong
Hope this helps!

  • Staging Area with OWB 10.2 - necessary or not?

    Hi to all,
I have read so much about Staging Area and OWB 10.2 that I am totally confused: Some documents and powerpoints in the web say you do not need one, others say you need one. The thing is I am planning a DWH and now I am not sure if a staging area is necessary or not, because the mappings do the ETL jobs internal so I am not sure about the staging area. Most of my data sources are Tables/Views/MViews in a database.
Thank you very much for any help concerning this question!
    Regards
    Thomas

Would you prefer the answer that you MAY need one? Then again, you may just WANT one!
For example, if you are building against a high transaction volume, busy 24/7 OLTP system then you may find that you need a local snapshot in order to do a complete build with a consistent set of source data for all your numbers to be consistent.
Then again, you also may just find that bringing over just delta data into a local snapshot makes for much more efficient load rather than running against huge full remote tables if they are not well partitioned and/or indexed.
Then again, complex joins run against a remote system may run more efficiently if you bring the data across with simple table dumps into a staging area that you can index to optimize your queries rather than have to deal with poor performance of complex joins over a dblink. Especially if you need to perform complex joins accross more than one db link to multiple source source systems. How big a cartesion product do you want bouncing around the network to perform that sort of scenario? Sure, maybe you can do it - but how much are you going to impact performance across the boards doing things like that?
Is the source system already stresed to the max and sitting on a vintage piece of equipment, but your shiny new DW environment is blessed with tons of resources that will make the ETL run faster by several factors if you first copy the data over locally?
So, do you need a staging area?
Fact is that there is no generic correct answer to this question.
You have to look at the specifics of your data requirements and your environment to answer that question. There are costs and benefits to having a staging area, and you have to determine which way the cost/benefit analysis comes out for your specific project.

hi, i am using iphone 4. People are complaining that they can't hear my voice while talking to them? Pls help

My son had the same problem with his 4 after updateing to 5.1.1. Apple would not replace it and he ended up getting a re-furb for £119.00.
He was 100% sure it was the upgrade that caused it but apple said it was the motherboard.

  • OWB 10.2 is slow

Has anyone noticed how the 10.2 version is much slower than 10.1? even deploying one object takes a while.

    Hi Jean-Pierre,
Here a not exhaustive list of issues:
    - Java client is really slow (hardware requirement of client PC should be better defined in the installation guide)
    - Auto binding of cubes resets all partitioning settings of the related table
    - Auto binding of cubes resets the names of the manually renamed FKs
    - Outbound synchronization of a table resets all physical properties to their default values
    - "java exception index out of bound" occurs on large/complex mappings -> Client crashes
    - Exports of the OWB Metadata failed without any error message or log entry
    - It is not possible to validate pluggable mappings.
    - It is not easy to delete or edit locations.
    - A user with read only right locks the object he is looking at
    - When a table is opened all FK related tables are opened with it, which means that all related objects will also be locked.
    - OWB doesn't support negative values in filters. A simple "-1" can not be defined. The workaround which has to be used is to write "0-1".
    - OWB often generates wrong code when ORs are used in the condtitions
Also I don't understand the logic of your new licensing policy. :-(
Personally I would have expected a bit more from a software which was delayed by 18 months.

  • Editors complaining that InCopy CS5 is slow

Both my off-site editors were just forced to upgrade to InCopy CS5 to stay compatible with our designers. They are both complaining that sometimes typing in IC is very slow. They are having to wait for the program to catch up even when just typing single letters. I had a similar issue in ID but was able to fix it by turning of Live Draw under Interface, but my editors inform me that they don't have this option.
Any other ideas about what could be slowing them down so drastically?  They are both on Windows machines but I don't know the specs of their computers.

Specs make a difference but the first thing to make sure of is that they're patched to 7.0.2.

  • Why are videos saved as gif's slow when viewed in browsers?

i can never find an answer to this, an seeing as how CS4 just came out, but is still giving me this issue there must be something new that i dont know about.
i play back the video in CS4 and its blazingly fast, faster than the actual video, i save the video as a gif, an when i preview it using the microsoft image previewer it plays back at normal speed just like the original video, but everytime i preview in a browser(IE8, FF3, Opera) they all show it running very slow, even after the video is fully loaded.
the only solution i know is to reduce the amount of frames to load when i first open the video but that makes the video look very choppy and not smooth.
ive seen gifs around the net that are very large(over 300px hight/width) and run at real time speed, but i dont know of any other program that allows you to import video and turn it into animated gifs.
    please help.

GIF is not a video format.
If something plays back faster than the original video (and then slower in a browser) then you have discovered just one of the faults of trying to produce video in a GIF file.
    Use a proper video format.

  • Why are both my Mac's so slow now after upgrading to Mavericks?

I have 2 Macs, an MB Pro Core i5, & Mac Mini Mid 2010 Core 2 Duo, (both 4/320's) and both have remained significantly slower, even after indexing, unless indexing takes days upon days. I understand why the Mini may have taken a speed dip, but a Core i5 unit too?

The upgrade was done over a dysfunctional system. Do this:
    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Re-download and reinstall Mavericks.
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Are games from Pch games usually slow with firefox

even tho Java and flash are updated games running pretty slow on Pch.games site which is unusual for this PC.

Try running Firefox 4.0 Beta 7 in 32-bit mode (close Firefox, control-click the Firefox.app icon, select "Get Info", and then check the box, "Open in 32-bit mode"). This worked for another Mac user in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/765367 this other thread].

  • Why are Mobile phone software updates so slow Telstra?

Looking at all this crowd support info, I seem to find quite a bit asking about device updates being so much slower than Optus and Vodafone.
Telstra, why, why are you so slow in releasing updates. Please stop blaming the manufacturer as it's obviously not them, you're just releasing 4.4.2 for the galaxy note 3 and we're up to lollipop 5.2, seriously, you're supposed to be the leader in the telecommunications industry but always seem to be two steps behind.

Good evening.I'm very sure indeed that Telstra doesn't need me to defend them BUT ..... I did that exact work every day for several years, and I'll answer your question. The various networks have different philosophies on testing and releasing software. It also depends on how thoroughly various networks conduct their testing, and their philosophy of allowing  a  certain degree of software bugs or software issues to be released, and patched later. In relation to Telstra, they are the dominant network operator in Australia, and in fact one of the 5 best operators in the world.   The last thing they need is a product not to fulfill their criteria, with the resultant backlash. When testing is thoroughly done, it is almost inevitable that  some issues will be found,  and that requires negotiation with the manufacturers, and then it's up to the manufacturers to fix those issues and re-release the software. Then the testing is re-done and sometimes it is again not approved by the operators.    That simply takes time.     Different networks have different philosphies as to what is acceptable to release. Also, the same generic software can display issues that often requires customisation to a degree for different networks.I hope this explains the situation to you. It is extremely complex as phones have now become a multitude of devices all in one.

  • The upgrade are a hoax and phone work slower.

After the last upgrade, kit kat, my Samsung Galaxy S III is not working properly. Whenever Verizon offers an upgrade, the phone work slower. Call customer service and the solution they offer is BUY A NEW PHONE. I had said it once and I did not believe but I am starting to believe it's true. The upgrade slower operated the aircraft for customers to buy new phones. I'm driving the possibility of imposing a class action may not be possible because they force us to buy new phones when you buy this one years ago. Unfortunate, but so customers leave.

There are no class actions allowed per US Supreme Court decision.
However class actions against the phone makers are possible.
That is paranoid thinking in regards to updates not coded by Verizon are done to make your device unusable.
    Good Luck

  • Why are animated GIFs in Firefox 11 slow? I downgraded to Firefox 10 and the animated GIFs suddenly play fine again, so I am positive that the update messed up the playback delay of animated GIFs somewhere.

Self-explanatory. I am positive that the GIF I am viewing is faster than what it's supposed to be. I viewed the same animated GIF in another browser and it plays fine. It just plays slower in Firefox 11. I downgraded to Firefox 10 and the animated GIFs were fine again. I upgraded back to 11 and yet again the animated GIFs slowed down. This happens for all of my animated GIFs.
I like viewing my animated GIFs, and since I don't have any problems yet with Firefox 10, I'll be sticking with it for a while...

Yes I have exactly the same problem, and it has NOT been solved yet in Firefox 14. Please Mozilla, what is the use releasing more and more "major upgrades", Firefox 11, then 12, then 13, then 14 (one per month !) if you don't even care to fix the big problems ? That is just marketing crap, nothing more. You guys used to do amazing job, but the new policy is just unbearable, no offense meant : you need to react !

  • Cannot delete more than 1 email at a time even when several are selected - and the deletion is slow!

I switched to TB not that long ago and this just started being an issue. I'm trying to delete multiple emails. I will have a bunch selected and hit delete. Only one will delete and it will take forever. They are all still selected but I have to hit delete for each one.

It wasn't an issue when I first switched to TB. I was able to select large groups and hit delete - voila! gone! I use avast - the free version - and I haven't changed any anti-virus, etc. settings.

  • Are multiple PDFS in my document slowing down the project?

I am designing a commemorative journal for the agency I work for.  I have placed both  PDFs and jpegs in the journal and am noticing that my 58 page 8 1/2 X11 document is becomng very sluggish and the document is crawling (virtually at a standstill) when I move around in the document.  Should I replace all my PDFs with jpeg versions of the graphics?  Would that make the project more efficient?  or.....do you think I need more RAM?
    THANKS!  Elisse01

Cross-references, when you set them up in InDesign, would look like "See the entry on Cross-References on page 45" and the page number auto-updates with changes in the document, so if that section gets pushed to page 47, the "see page XX" gets updated from 45 to 47. If you don't know what they are, you probably don't have 'em. I can verify that a document with large numbers of crossrefs will bog down your computer; it seems all I work on these days is long docs with lots of cross-references, and it makes me want to upgrade.
2 gigabytes of RAM is what I'd call "absolute minimum for any kind of computing on WIn7 in 2011." I think you'd notice improvements across the board if you upgraded to 8 gigs, and probably even if you bumped it to 4 gigs. However, that still may not be the cause of your slowdowns.
In order to improve performance in InDesign, you can:
Set Live Screen Draw to Delayed or Never in Edit -> Preferences -> Interface
Turn off Dynamic Spelling in Edit -> Spelling -> Dynamic Spelling
Turn off Live Preflight in Window -> Output -> Preflight
In InDesign, you can shift from High-Quality Display to Typical Display under View -> Display Performance. If you're on High Quality, shift to Typical - it'll draw images with 72ppi previews instead of at full resolution. However, if you're already at Typical, then this won't help you very much. I don't think that saving down to JPEG would help a lot, but it might - if you're watching your PDFs being drawn slowly then maybe that would increase the rate of screen draw. Much depends on the content of those PDFs, so if they're just pictures (no text, no vector art) then saving out TIFFs or JPEGs might improve matters for you. However, before leaving PDF to move to a lossy format like JPEG, I'd ask you if there might be updated video card drivers for your machine. Honestly, I can't say that a better video card would improve performance more than more RAM would, for you, but the possibility is there.
But, before you spend money - have you tried to do anything to your computer to generally improve performance? I didn't read it too closely, but this list of suggestions was one of the first hits I got when I searched for "windows 7 performance tweaks." If you've not tried anything of the sort, it may be worth a try.
I'm sure that some other posters will be able to come up with some more things to try, both in InDesign and on your install of Windows. However, even though I can't look over your shoulder... I have a hunch that your hunch is correct, that you're just running up against the limits of your hardware.
