Developing a Sorted Popup Menu

Hello Folks;
How would I go about developing / scripting a sorted popup menu for Numbers in iWork 09?
Thank you,
vic

Hi Vic,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Numbers '09 forum.
The bad news is that popup menus in Numbers aren't sortable, except by heavy handed editing. You can add items—but only to the bottom of the list, you can delete items—from anywhere in the list, and you can rename items.
You can use Fill down or Fill right to copy a popup menu into a range of cells, but if these are edited popups replacing older versions, the previously set values will be replaced by the value set for the original being pasted in.
For some flexibility, you might want to use a technique involving a Slider, a LOOKUP table and the VLOOKUP function. Jerrold Green wrote about it and provided some examples in discussion of Working with Pop-up menus in this forum back in April. The link will take you to that discussion.

Barry

  • Where is Sorting Popup Menu?

    In order to scroll the thumbnails in Split View the Sorting Popup Menu must be visible. It is not visible here, and I cannot find a way to make it visible. TIA!

    It should be at the top left of the Browser pane. Can you upload a screengrab somewhere?

  • Copy data from one sheet to another based on content of popup menu

    I'm trying to create a spreadsheet to help teachers grade students during reading time in my school.  If you're interested in the specifics of it, the long version is in the following paragraph:
    I work in a high school, and 10% of each student's English class grade is supposed to come from reading during what is called "Enrichment time," a 20-minute daily reading time.  This occurs at the beginning of the second period of the school day.  With a few rare exceptions, students are not in their English teacher's class for this reading time; their 2nd period teacher, whether a teacher of math, science, English, or history, or whatever, records a daily grade for each student, based on whether or not the student is reading during enrichment time. In the past, teachers have recorded the grade of each student on a separate sheet of paper, then gone to the teachers' lounge and sorted through their students' grade sheets, putting each student's sheet into a folder for the student's English teacher to grade. Next year every teacher will have an iPad, so I'm trying to create a cloud-shared numbers spreadsheet that could help solve the problem of teachers not communicating well.  I've settled upon the solution of giving each teacher with a 2nd period Enrichment group access to a spreadsheet that would be accessible to all the English teachers as well.  The enrichment teacher would enter the students' names on teh far left hand side, then with each student's name the teacher's name would be indicated in a popup menu.  The first sheet is where the 2nd period enrichment teacher would enter the data, and then the different English teachers would, ideally, have a separate sheet with only their students populating that sheet.
    tl;dr:
    I need sheet 2 to be populated with whole rows of data from sheet 1, and I want sheet 2 to only include rows which have a specific choice selected in a popup menu.

  • In iCloud Numbers how do I set up a popup menu in an entire column

    I have a database using iCloud Numbers. The table is for my tax deductions for 2014. In one column I have Doctors/Dentists/etc. Instead of typing that title each time I create a new entry in that column, how can I set a popup menu like I can in Excel and choose Doctors/Dentists/etc?

    Hi Aunest,
    You have couple of options here.
    You can make a copy of the site-wide template for every catalogue and build the menu manually.
    The other option is to use:
    {module_cataloguelistdump,-1,rowLength,targetFrame,sortBy}
    Displays the List of all Catalogues as names that are links to those catalogues
    Parameters:
    Use -1 to display parent catalogs, use -2 to display all catalogs including sub-catalogs or a catalogue ID to display the subcatalogues of a particular catalogue
    rowLength - will limit the number of items per row when items are displayed as a list. Default is 1 item per row.
    targetFrame - e.g. _blank. Specify the frame you want the item to open in
    sortBy - will sort the web apps in specified order
    Alphabetical - sorts items alphabetically
    Weight - sorts items by weight
    Example
    {module_cataloguelistdump,-1,1,_blank,Alphabetical} - this module will display the catalogue list in the new window, alphabetically and all in one column

    It is probably possible with digging deep into the contents of your "LabVIEW/resources" folder but will have a number of drawbacks. First your VI will need to provide a specific (undocumented) and most probably not so trivial interface that will be hard to uncover. It will somehow need to tell the project Explorer what it's name is and for what types of files or containers it should be displayed.
    Then those hooks will likely change between each LabVIEW version too as the Project Explorer is still a project under development. So unless there is an unlikely document here on ni.com that describes this (and which a search should clearly give you if there) I think it is simply not worth the hassle to dig into this.

  • AWT Popup Menu in Fullscreen Exclusive + JOGL

    Our application runs in Fullscreen Exclusive mode and uses JOGL. We want the user to be able to access right-click Popup menus like in other applications. (Obviously, this isn't a game; but I figured I'd post here because game developers are the only ones likely to be familiar with Fullscreen Exclusive.)
    On Windows, I was pleasantly suprised to find that popupMenu.show() just works when I'm in Fullscreen Exclusive. The menu appears, works correctly, etc.
    On Mac OS X 10.3+, the menu does not appear. I've developed a clumsy workaround (basically, go out of fullscreen exclusive to show the menu, and then go back in when mouse events start coming again). Frankly, the way it works on a Mac is what I expected on the PC. I wouldn't expect a Popup Menu (being another window) to be able to appear over a fullscreen exclusive window.
    My question is this: Is the Windows behavior a bug? Is it video driver dependent? (It seems to work OK with all the machines we've tested on... ATI, NVIDIA, Intel) Should I be doing my Mac hack on the Windows platform to avoid some unforseen problem?
    Also, any idea what Linux or other platforms would do?

    I am not sure why that works in one OS and not the others.
    All I can say is that if it was a game, we would draw the popup menu ourself within the frame in our rendering loop, that is garunteed to work in all OS's. But your probably using AWT or SWING components. Sounds like it may be a compadibility issue, I would check the bug lists to see if that is a known issue that is being worked on.

  • Mouse right click button, popup menu, PC frozen

    Hello all,
    It has been while I've been noticing this problem.
    Almost every time I click with the right mouse button on an email from the list of emails or a word inside the content of an email to see which words are suggested by the spell checker, the usual popup menu appear but immediately after
    my PC gets frozen. I need to restart it.
    I don't think TB causes that crash, but something indirectly related.
    How can I debug this? (I'm software developer)
    Thank you so much.
    Roberto

    Update1:
    I put my attention only in the main TB menu.
    I disabled the TB extensions (only Lighting and EnigMail) and tried again to play with the main TB menu.
    With this new TB GUI, you don't see directly the main menu. I usually click the ALT key and the main menu will be displayed. After that I play with it a bit. That means, I clicked on on Tools or File or View etc items and just moved the mouse cursor over the popup menu, without clicking on a specific submenu item. After a while, some seconds, the PC gets frozen and I need to restard the PC.
    I started TB in safe mode also (-safe-mode). In this mode the main menu appears always so I don't need to click on the ALT key.
    I repeat the same steps of moving the mouse cursor of popup main menu items. Up to now, all is normal, without crashing or freezing.
    PC: Win7 (full updated), x64, TB last version.
    Any idea how can I debug this problem?
    Thanks

  • Problem with fireworks popup menu in dreamweaver, has a huge box.

    hi, i made a popup menu in fireworks, and when i open that
    html page in dreamweaver, there is a huge white box around the
    popup menu area, so that i cant type anything under the menu or
    anywhere near it. i was wondering how i get rid of this white box.
    any help greatly appreciated. thanks. derek
    here is the code

    You have Dreamweaver, which is a wonderful and powerful
    program for building HTML. So
    why are you trying to build a navigation menu in Fireworks,
    which is a graphics program? Please. I beg you! Save yourself hours
    of headaches: create your graphics in Fireworks and your HTML in
    Dreamweaver.
    For example, this code would be impossible to maintain.
    Here's one of your navigation items:
    img src="untitled-4_r2_c2.gif" alt="" name="untitled4_r2_c2"
    width="98" height="48" border="0" id="untitled4_r2_c2"
    Do you even know which image this is or which link it's
    intended to take? Create your images with decent names like
    "contact.gif" or "products.gif" so you can write clear code.
    The first row and the first and last columns of your table
    have 1-pixel spacer gifs. Fireworks always puts in spacer gifs. If
    you're not aware of them, and take them out, you might get to later
    stages of your development process and wonder why you couldn't get
    your navigation menu to line up with everything else.
    As for that "big white box," it's a combination of the div
    the table is in and the 100% width on the table:
    div id="FWTableContainer1329034333
    table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100"
    I have no idea what the div CSS is doing, but if I comment it
    out and take out the 100% width attribute on the table, then I get
    something that behaves more reasonably. FWTableContainer1329034333
    isn't in your code, but it still does something in my system, so
    either the long strings of numbers don't matter or it's coming from
    some place else and who knows what it is.
    My point is, that by letting Fireworks write bad code for
    you, you've set yourself up with something that doesn't work and is
    extremely difficult, if not impossible, to debug and maintain. Why
    would you do this to yourself?

  • 30EA2 Can't get Popup menu

    Hi!
    I'm evaluating Oracle SQL Developer 30EA2 for other platforms with JDK 1.6.0_20 on Fedora Linux (I use the "other platforms" version because all I need to get it running is to unzip it in its own directory and it doesn't interfere with anything else on my system).
    I can not get the popup menu via keyboard, only by the right mouse click. It doesn't work in Connections tab, nor in the SQLWorksheet.
    Shortcut key for command Other-Popup Menu is Shift-F10 (stock default setting)
    First I migrated the settings from previous installation (Version 2.1.1.64 Build MAIN-64.39) and it didn't work. I thought it may be because of mismatched settings, so I stopped SQL Developer,. deleted the ~/.sqldeveloper/system30.0.02.83 folder, started SQL Developer, but it does not work either.
    I can get popup menu in the 2.1.1.64 version normally, by Shift-F10 or by pressing "popup key" (located between Win key and Ctrl key).
    Please fix this, as this is a major obstacle for using SQL Developer without mouse. I use SQL Developer extensively every day, so keyboard only usage is essential to me.
    Speaking of popup menu: there is a double "Refactoring" entry in the popup menu in SQLWorksheet.
    Otherwise, SQL Developer is getting better and better! Keep up the good work!
    bye
    Alex

    Hi Alex -
    Just tested this on 3.0.02.97, Java(TM) Platform 1.6.0_21, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 8), gnome
    & both Shift-F10 and 'Context Menu' keystrokes work so will be in next rel;ease.

  • Separator in Popup menu

  • Application wide popup menu for JTextComponent descendants

    Hi!
    I'm working on large project with reach Swing GUI and I got stuck with one small but wery annoing problem. I have to append simple popup menu to all text input fields (JTextComponent descendants) in whole application. I'm realy lazy to append mouse listener on each component, so I'm asking, is there any way to append "default" popup menu for all components. Please, don't answer about custom components instead of Swing plain JTextComponent descendants - it's worse to change classes for all fields then add mouse listener to them.
    As an example of what I want I could forward you to UIManager.put() method, which affects all properties of component behaviour thoughout application. I want to find same solution, maybe there any registry or smth. else in API.
    Than you in advice.

    You could always try extending something like MetalTextFieldUI so that it adds the listeners to the text field automatically. You'd then need to register that UI class with the UIManager at startup:
    public class MyTextFieldUI extends MetalTextFieldUI {
      protected void installListeners() {
        super.installListeners();
        // TODO - Install your listener here
      protected void uninstallListeners() {
        super.uninstallListeners();
        // TODO - Uninstall your listener here
    UIManager.put("TextFieldUI", MyTextFieldUI.class.getName());Personally, I think you're just being lazy... getting your components to extend a subclass of JTextField should be no trouble at all and will leave you with clearer code.
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for your help.

    In what way, exactly, isn't it working? Do you see the pop up menu at all?
    Did you make sure that JS is enabled in your Acrobat?
    I've ran the code and it seems to work fine for me. However, I don't quite
    get what it's supposed to do.
    Is it supposed to take the user to a specific page, or to a named
    destination? It seems like it's trying to do both, which doesn't make much
    sense.
