Development on Windows CE, Embedded Handheld, Mobile

I have read about the Gateway productivity accelerator for Microsoft, which is an add-in to Visual Studio. There already was an add-in to Visual Studio as documented in the "SAP NetWeaver Gateway Developer Tool for Visual Studio", which had prerequisites like .Net Framework 4.0, Visual Studio 2010 and Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Windows Server.
Do any of these 2 Visual Studio add-ins facilitate Gateway/OData-related development for Windows CE, Windows Embedded Handheld or Windows Mobile operating systems? We are wondering if we could develop handheld barcode scanning applications with it.
If not, there are probably workarounds to develop with OData services, just without the Visual Studio add-ons I guess?
Thanks!
Florian

Hi Florian,
both GWPAM and the previous Visual Studio add-in "SAP NetWeaver Gateway Developer Tool for Visual Studio" (which you actually should not use anymore) do not explicitly support Windows CE or Embedded Handhelds, ...
As of now the focus of GWPAM is very much on the classic Windows and "Office like" application. I am saying "as of now" because you might have heard about the next planned innovation which is planned to integrate in Windows Azure and Office 365. So we are definitely looking at other integration.
I have never tried to use GWPAM in the context of Windows CE, so I am not sure if this would work...

Holger.

The following MSDN threads explain the cause of the problem and provide some guidance on how to change your application to resolve the problem:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6cda1576-2cf7-4b2a-9e57-0c55f1c2f500/ok-button-dissapears-on-windows-mobile-65?forum=netfxcompact

Another solution, instead of changing your application, is for the user to simply press the physical Ok button on the device's keyboard (assuming that the device has an Ok button).  For example, some rugged devices such as Intermec or Motorola
have a physical keyboard with an Ok button, or another physical button can be re-mapped to act as the Ok button.  Contact your device supplier if you need to do this.

I agree. In my opinion Sun has done a horrible job documenting all this madness for the average developer just starting out with this stuff. There is the CLDC, J2ME, Personal Java, J2ME-WTK, MIDP, MIDP-FCS ... maddness. Anyway after sorting through it all for a few days, I think the answer to your question you will need to use Personal Java for WinCE and the Sharp Zaurus, and MIDP for PalmOS for the palm. Jeode seems to be the most common and best Personal Java implementation and it is basically the JDK1.2.2 (or is it 1.1.8) that is designed to run on WinCE and Embeddix (such as Lineo on the Zaurus). You program it just like you would a 1.1.8 application and then you can test it by running pjava.exe which is included in the personal java 3.1 download from Sun. There is also a program called JavaCheck that will ensure that your app will run properly in PersonalJava. As for the Palm, MIDP for PalmOS is a 574K program that installs on your palm device. You then use the J2ME-WTK (wireless toolkit) to build a JAR/JAD file and you use the MIDP API to write the code.

  • Is it possible to use a CompactDAQ and NI-DAQmx in the TPC-2212 with Windows 7 Embedded System?

    Hi,
I would like to develop a application with the TPC-2212 (Touch panel computer)  and a CompactDaq System (NI9237 - 4-Channel, ±25 mV/V, 24-Bit Simultaneous Bridge Module).
Is it possible or I should use a panel pc?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This thread is a bit old, but I thought it would be worth while responding (as I was wondering the same thing a day ago).
The answer to the OP's concern(s) is YES, you can install DAQmx on your Windows 7 embedded TPC-2212 touch panel device while connecting to your cDAQ hardware.  YES, it will function (depending on your memory constraints).  DAQmx BASE is NOT a requirement (which, to me, seems very ambiguous if you're referring to NI's documentation for the LabVIEW Touch Panel Module).
My confusion began when it seemed using the Touch Panel Module for the 2212 was a requirement, not an option.  If one proceeds with this assumption, then referring to the TPM documentation:
    http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371940d.pdf
NOTE: this link above is to an older version, but the content itself (also installed locally with the TPM in \\manuals\TPC_Getting_Started.pdf) remains relatively unchanged.
Section "Installing Additional Tools" clearly states "You must install additional tools on the target depending on the functionality you need."  Immediately following is the installation procedures for DAQmx Base.  You'll see the same statement in the LabVIEW help files that get installed with the TPM on your development machine.  Nowhere does it state, for Windows Embedded, that it's possible to use DAQmx itself.
Because DAQmx is a bit of a heavy weight, you'll probably want to go with the Runtime (with MAX) as I did:
Search for 'NI DAQmx Run-Time Engine - Configuration with MAX'.  I would have posted a link, but NI's site was down for maintenance at the time of this post.
Connect to your 2212 over a network connection (I just used a cross over cable and connected directly).  Create a shared directory and copy the downloaded installer on over - install.  You could, of course, download direct if your 2212 is already networked with web access.
I have my test station application running beautifully with an attached (USB) cDAQ chassis loaded with a variety of modules.
I hope this post is as useful for somebody else as it would have been for me.

  • Motion with windows xp embedded

I am trying to get some motion code to run under the Windows XP embedded Op system.
Has anyone any new knowledge from that existing in the forum?
If so can anyone possibly give me a blow by blow account of how to get some sample CVi motion code running on an embedded system?
Also how do I configure Write Filter to allow the minimal system to run from Flash or Solid State Disk?
    Many Thanks
All comments and experiences from my development will be shared back to the forum.
    Mike..

    Mike,
I understand your concern and I'm passing this request to R&D to evaluate their future development.
LabVIEW RT now supports also Motion and Vision, this have been added in the near past to the RT product line.
Since you are mandated to use LabWindows/CVI, my suggestion will be to either have a PC, but running onboard programs in the motion controller, in this way you are running your program on an RT-OS, and as long as your computer is turned on it will be working.
The other suggestion is to have a firewire controller, the FW-7344, together with the onboard program feature, with LW/CVI you can program your application, download it to the controller, and just disconnect it from your computer, you can leave the "box" working as a stand-al
    one instrument.
I hope this helps, if not hopefully you will find an answer from someone else here on the forum. Good luck!

  • Tick mark shows as '4' in Windows XP Embedded

    Hi,
The tick mark in checkbox (xfa form) displays as "4" in  Windows XP Embedded. Kindly help

    Hi,
you sample looks fine and I don't have any problem on my system.
All boxes show the mark as expected.
I found a description in the XFA specs about the marks, which let me think that it is your Reader that causes the effect.
These descriptions are deliberately vague to allow latitude for the application. For example when
presenting on glass the filled circle might appear as a glowing light whereas when presenting on paper it
would probably appear as a flat black circle taken from a font.

  • Installing Adobe AIR on Windows XP Embedded

    Hello,
I'm working at a museum using kiosk type clients running Adobe AIR. One type of thin clients we're using is running Windows XP Embedded. I've tried installing standard Adobe AIR on it via web, but it keeps failing. Is there some way to get Adobe AIR up and running on the Embedded version of XP?

Any official word on this? It seems Flash Player is supported

  • Why are you not developing for windows phone 8.1 yet?

I've heard a lot of good things about Microsoft opening up their platforms for developers. I literally used Firefox, Firefox sync, and enjoy Firefox as my default browser. I've seen a few posts saying Mozilla isn't currently developing for Windows Phone and I'm just wondering why. I know there is a demand for it. It would dominate the Windows Phone market for sure. I'd really like to see it come to the platform so can someone explain why specifically it isn't? What restrictions are still being faced if any?

hello, originally there have been technical and legal hurdles in the app store which discouraged mozilla from starting any developments in this direction. i don't know about the current situation, but since mozilla is now focusing its energies on creating firefox os as open source web-based platform, i doubt that you will see firefox on your windows phone device in the foreseeable future...

  • Installing Latest Firefox on Windows XP Embedded gives error: "This application has failed to start because pdh.dll was not found"

I'm trying to install the latest (standards-based) browser I can on on old Windows XP Embedded computer. The computer's hardware does not meet the "Recommended Hardware" of a Pentium 4 (it has a P3). I initially tried installing/running Firefox version 28, and that seemed to work fine. Version 36 gives the error I stated in the question. It's not paramount that I run the *latest* version of Firefox (the browser is ONLY used for an intranet application), but I'd like to install the latest version that will run, and if there's a simple fix for this version, I'd like to explore that.
    Regards,
    Gerrat

Well, I was pretty sure it didn't have malware. It was running a steady state - like program & we have dozens of these on our network (but not on our domain). We have a corporate anti-virus (Sophos) running on all the computers on our domain, and there are no notifications of anything suspicious coming from these units.
Just to be sure I installed and ran an antivirus scan against it though - as suspected, nothing suspicious found.
As I mentioned, FF 28 runs fine, it's just the latest (36.0) that doesn't run (I haven't tested any versions in between). Either seems to install without hitch, but when the latest version is run, it gives the error about the missing dll.

  • NI DAQmx 14.2 and Windows 7 embedded

    Hello,
I try to install an application using labview 2014 with an acquisition device NI USB-6251 on a Windows 7 platform brand new embedded.
The problem is it seems the installer refuses to install DAQmx 14.2 on this machine, I just get the following messages:
    (See the images below)
Whenever I confirm Insatallation to continue to the end.
When the PC is restarted, the NI USB-6251 device is not recognized either by windows or by MAX. (Not valid drivers)
I transferred the driver manually (nixsrkw.sys) of a PC that works with the device in the path I indicates the installer plug and play windows (Windows / system32 / drivers), without success! (No valid driver)
I tried several installer configuration, nothing happens, I have to wonder if NI DAQmx14.2 is compatible with Windows 7 Embedded ...
Thank you for helping me a bit if you have already encountered this kind of problem, I do not understand what blocks the installation of the USB driver.
    Sorry for my poor English
    Greetings to all.

    Hello Miello,
Thank you for your answer, I just tried the "run as Admin ..." with the right button, with the same problem in the end.
It is true that this manipulation is not well documented in Windows 7.
I'll try the same installer with a machine running Windows XP embedded, I'll let you know.
If the installation succeeded this clearly show that the problem is on the Windows 7 side, otherwise the problem is in the application builder or modules ...

  • Not possible to run CodedUI tests on Windows 7 embedded

    Hi all,
I am trying to get my CodedUI tests running on the target machine with Windows 7 Embedded.
For that, I installed on the target machine:
    Visual Studio 2010 Test Agent
    VS2010 SP1
Next I try to run the CodedUI test from the command line using mstest.exe (since no Visual Studio may be installed on target
machine). However, before even executing the first line of code in my test, mstest fails after showing a popup window with following message:
"the ordinal 459 could not be located in the dynamic link library urlmon.dll"
When looking in the detailed logs of QTAgent32.exe I see a 'System.BadImageFormatException' thrown by the PluginManager of CodedUI when trying to
start an Internet Explorer plugin. See detailed stacktrace below this message.
This might be caused by the fact that this Windows Embedded installation does not contain Internet Explorer (for security reasons). The CodedUI test
and application under test however do not need Internet Explorer at all, the application is a WPF application.
    So, my questions:
    - Does anyone know how to get rid of this error without installing Internet Explorer?
    - Any ways to prevent MsTest.exe to start the IE extension for a CodedUI test?
Some things I tried already but did not bring success:
    - Run a completely empty CodedUI test; it triggers the same error.
    - Remove IE extensions from C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTT\10.0
    - Remove unneeded things (datacollectors) from MsTestSettings file.
    Any help/ideas appreciated!

    Hi Jan,
    Thanks for your response:)
I think it is a good feedback for this issue, but as far I know, it is by design now, we need to use the IE extension for test projects. My understanding is that it would find the accordant UI Test Controls with your app UI controls, so it would search all
test controls include the IE controls, and then use one real UITestControl to instantiate an object which is equal to the real UI control, so we could playback the recorded action.
    WinButton uICloseButton = this.UISnippingToolWindow.UISnippingToolTitleBar.UICloseButton;
But I think you can submit this feedback to Microsoft Connect feedback portal:
    http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/CreateFeedback.aspx,maybe
Microsoft engineers will share us a more plausible explanation.
    Thanks for your understanding.
    Best Regards,
    Jack
