Development tool for long term

Just wondering which of the three tools:
1. adobe air
2. webworks
3. upcoming native sdk
would be a good bet to be the primary tool used over the next few years?
Just didn't want to have to re-develop apps in case we made the wrong decision today.  Is there a general consensus which one might dominate the developer community?  Or has anyone tried the beta for the native sdk that could give their opinoin?
thanks.
Solved!

That all depends on your current skills and the type of app you are trying to develop.
Adobe AIR: Uses ActionScript and is a higher level object-orient language.  There are tons of sites and sample code available on the net and AS3 has been around at least 7 years so it is fairly mature.  AIR applications can be ported to other platforms including iOS and Android.  AIR also allows you to create desktop applications and the sibling version (Flex) allows you to build browser applications.  Adobe AIR allows to create a wide variety of application types (basic games, business, etc.).  Most people with OO background can pick it up pretty quickly and is "similar" to Java.  The development tools are mature (Eclipse) including debuggers, profilters, remote debugging, etc. Very consistent user interface across all platforms.
WebWorks: If you are good with JavaScript and HTML, then this would be a good tool.  WebWorks is bewer than AS3, but lots of resources to get to know JavaScript.  Probably a little faster to build basic applications than AS3.  It has the same drawbacks of developing web-based applications because of JS, but if that is what you know than it is a very good choice. Many other mobile platforms are adopting WebWorks too.  Some WebWorks GUI elements look kind of strange.
Native SDK: Is a C++ SDK, so if you have years of C++ knowledge and need to have higher performance application for things like games (because it allows for multi-threading and OGL), then this is a very good choice. Not for the timid in dealing with C++, but you be closer to the OS level and will gain greater performance.  If you dont currently know C++, I suggest to start with AS3.  Other than games and some high performance business apps, you would have to create a strong case to use NDK over AIR or WebWorks.  NDK will be wholy QNX and BBTOS API extensions.  Not portable outside the BB/RIM for the most part.  Lots of C/C++ libraries will likely port over easily.  Unknown IDE at this point, but hopefully it is Eclipse as well.
Hope that helps.

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/remove-browsing-search-and-download-history
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
If you have software like Advanced SystemCare (Surfing Protection feature) that might reset some files to older versions to protect these files against changes then check the settings or uninstall this software.

  • Suggestions for the Oracle Developer Tools for VS2005

I'd like to start a thread for constructive feedback of the Beta version of these Oracle Developer Tools for VS2005.
First off, check the known issues here before posting:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/dotnet/odt10202rn.html
    So, here are my issues:
    - In the Oracle Explorer, when you right click on a large table and click "Retrieve Data..." it hangs the IDE until an apparent timeout value of 30 seconds, then shows a message box stating that "The query is taking a long time. Would you like to continue" ...waiting? I think the better approach here is to follow MS. In Menu Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> DataConnections, there is a setting to limit SQL results to x number of rows. I think ODT should do one of the following. 1. Read this value and apply it. OR 2. Hardcode a value of 100 - 500 rows. 3. Add a setting similar to MS in the Options...
    - In the Oracle Explorer, when you right-click on a view and click "Design..." the code for the view opens, but is not very readable because the line breaks are interpreted a little boxes. After dumping it into a hex editor, you can see the little box characters are Linefeeds (Char(10)). If these are all replaced with Carriage Return+Linefeed (Chr(13) + Char(10)), and pasted back into the editor in VS2005, it works perfectly. Note: My Oracle 9i Server is running on the Linux platform.
    - I know this is a known issue, but this one's a biggie for me. Drag and drop is not supported from Oracle Explorer to the XML Schema Designer. Will Drag-and-Drop of tables generate TableAdapters as well with the Fill methods?
    - Pre-existing Triggers don't seem to be visible in the Oracle Explorer.
    Thanks,
    -Tony

    Hi
I am new to Oracle but not to VS. I have downloaded and installed the newest tools for Developer, having first tried the install for VS2003.net (which refused to install on my VS 2005.) I got the beta download and installed it, but my oracle explorer shows nothing. Any attempt to add a connection results in an error ORA-12560:TNS:protocol adaptor error. I had the full install of 10g r2 on my notebook, but removed it and opted for the XE version. I removed the Oracle_Home environment variable prior to installing XE. I am trying to connect to the HR database, and the account is unlocked. I saw a reference to the tnsfiles file, and that seems to be the problem, but I don't know what to do about it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer help.

  • Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2013 on Windows 10 Technical Preview

Hi, I've never developed a plugin for Office before. I've downloaded the technical preview of Windows 10 and have it running via Boot Camp on my MacBook (Looks good! I'll buy it when it comes out). Obviously with this being in beta it's understandable that
there are problems, so this is just a heads up on one particular problem. Maybe there's already a solution or workaround?
I've downloaded Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition, brought a copy of Microsoft Office Home And Student 2013 and am currently in the process of installing Microsoft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2013.
The only problem though is that when I try to install it I get the following message:
    http://s22.postimg.org/dxh1gtra9/Install_Problem_Office_Plugin_Tools.png
    Here is the log:
    http://pastebin.com/7wWkSfjF
I also tried to download the file directly and run that.
    http://s3.postimg.org/tj9vb660j/Install_Problem_Office_Plugin_Tools2.png
I right clicked on the file and noticed an options called "Troubleshoot Compatibility". There was a wizard, and I ran through the wizard a number of times through different routes but none of them worked. I was unable to find the option which turned
off compatibility mode. I then searched for answers online which told me to do some things in the regedit program but that didn't seem to solve the problem.
Anyway, I understand that this is a beta version of Windows 10 and that there are going to be problems but thought it would be best to let you know. Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and buy Windows 8.
    Many thanks,
    Lawrence

  • Hi I want to buy an unlocked iPhone 5in the Middle East. I want to know if I will be able to use my iPhone and all its applications when we go back to live in the US for long term.

Hi I want to buy an unlocked iPhone 5 in the Middle East. I want to know if I will be able to use my iPhone and all its applications when we go back to live in the US for long term.
    Thank you

Apple Online Store sells unlocked iPhone in the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium (French, Dutch), Brazil, Canada (English, French), China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong (English, Chinese), Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (French, German), Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and United States.
You can probably be absolutely sure any other source will be carrier locked
It also appears that only Zain offer unlocking (of all the ME carriers )  in Jordan and Bahrain
A ME iPhone 5  ( A1429 GSM )will not  work on US LTE when you return

  • White background or Black background suited for long term watching ?

    Hello,
I saw many desktop themes with white or light grey background a few years ago, but now, many of them turn into black background with white or blue or cyan or others color of fonts.
As a programmer, I am just curious about the theme: which type is suited for long term use of computer?
I have tried both, and found grey background is easy to read because it is similiar to read on paper, but it looks like a lighting-bulb!; black background with blue font is cool, along with less luminosity, seems free my eyes.
But another problem is the color choosing. With light grey background, it seems any color is right. But with black background, colors should be carefully selected, since some colors are not suit black background at all.
Grayscale is another one. With light grey  background, I can easily tune my font in grayscale, like Japanese cartoon paper (I like it very much!), gracifully to distinct keywords. But with black background, it is ugly to use grayscale to distinct keywords.
      How about your ideas?

I commented out the external logo calls (since the new logo area fits really nicely with this style), The sections I commented out can probably be removed safely, and I made the textbox post area more readable.  Now I love the new webpage layout!
Here's the dark home page style I'm using, also based on Hrwa's archlinx homepage userstyle, but I havent made too many changes there, other than the package search box needed a little tweeking.   I havent really checked the other pages, I do know the wiki pages have some issues with this style, if anyone else wants to help out

  • Best method for converting 8 mm cassettes for long term storage

I have approximately one hundred 8 mm video cassette tapes that I would like to convert to another format for long term storage.  I captured my first tape today from my camera Sony DCR VTR 520 which is a digital 8 mm camera.  I was not planning to convert the files to DVDs at this time but just keep the avi file on the computer.   The video was just over 2 hours long but the file ends up being 27 GB.   I expecting it to be around 8 GB like a 2 hr DVD but I guess its not the same.
The 8 mm tape I converted was from an very old 8 mm camera which I no longer have (1990).  The camera used to capture from is a VTR 520 which is actually a Sony digital 8 mm, which can play back standard 8 mm.  I used CS3 on my old computer with standard project settings for DV NTSC 29.97 f/s.   I currently use PE10 so I could use either program.
What do other people use to convert and store videos on??
If I want to keep them as avi files will I have to live with these large file sizes?
I did a search on the forum and found titles that talk about this subject from a couple of years ago but when I click on them they don't come up.   How do you see these older threads?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    JMJarige,
The only potential problems with this workflow are:
DVR units (I have a Panasonic, but this is pretty much across the board) seldom produce a 100% DVD-compliant disc, and as most add a rudimentary Menu & navigation system to the disc, produce a first VOB (where the Menus & navigation are located), that is tough, if not impossible to directly Import.
In the production to DVD, there is MPEG2 compression applied. If one edits that material, and then they output to any compressed CODEC, the quality loss is easily seen
When I convert from VHS for a client, I create a DVR DVD disc, for their archives (in case the tapes die), but then Capture to DV-AVI to be edited to a DVD-Video. The client gets two sets of discs - one that is produced by the DRV, and then one that is the finished edit of their tapes. For me, it's a two step process, but gives them a backup, plus a finished product.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Using flash drives for long-term backups

I use a USB flash drive to backup my mom's iPhoto Library. I've heard, however, that flash drives are not reliable for long-term backups. Is this true? If so, what is the best alternative?

    Hello VK,

I have seen several DVD's that simply won't work after only a few years.
yes, I'm not a fan of DVD-Rs either. they do go bad pretty quickly (especially cheap ones) - quicker than flash drives in my experience. Personally, i only use regular external drives (and lately cloud storage) for backups.

  • Connection Problem When Using Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio

I tried to create an Oracle Connection in my Visual Studio 2008 after installing Oracle 11g, Oracle Data Access Components (ODAC) with Oracle Devleoper Tools for Vissual Studio version 11.1.0.6.20.
I followed the directions according to "Building .NET Applications Using Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio, when I click Test Connection, I keep getting the error message below.
    Microsoft Visual Studio
    ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred
    OK

    I solved the problem.
This is what I did for the benefit of the embryonic newbe like me.
    On the Add Connection Dialog
    1.     For Data source name I selected Local Database
    2.     I clicked on the specific User Name and I typed SYSTEM
    3.     For Password, I typed orcl (the password I setup during the installation) (HR did not work for me for User name and Password according to the tutorial instructions)
    4.     For Role, I selected Default
    5.     Connection Name, I selected Local Database
    6.     Before proceeding any further went to Windows XP SP3 where I was operating from, under Start Menu, I selected Administrative Tools then Services
    a.     On the Windows Services (Local) Dialog, under name, I selected OracleServiceORCL and OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener. I clicked on them one at a time
    b.     On the presented Dialog, under Service Status, I Clicked on the Start Button to start the Services

    - Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21 with Xcopy Deployment
    - Oracle 11g ODAC 11.1.0.6.21
    - Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET with Oracle 10g Release 2 ODAC 10.2.0.2.21
    - Oracle 10g Release 2 ODAC 10.2.0.2.21
    - Oracle 10g ODAC 10.1.0.4.0
    - Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET 10.1.0.4
Which of those should I use? Will the latest version (11.1.0.6.21) work with the 10g Express Edition? Or should I install one of the others?
I've got installed both VS 2005 Prof and VS 2008 Prof SP1 on my machine.
    Thanks
    P.

  • Using "Deleted Items" folder for long term storage.

I have a user that is using the "Deleted Items" folder in Outlook for long-term storage.  He has unchecked the box in the options which would remove the items in the Deleted Items folder at shutdown
and is having problems with his Outlook freezing up several times a day.  He was using a Microsoft Surface as his primary computer and has since changed to a Dell Latitude, but Outlook still freezes up.  He has an Office 365 Pro Plus license.
I have been looking for articles to explain all the reasons for not using "Deleted Items" for storage, but in order to get him to change, This is not a .pst, it is the Outlook default “Deleted Items”.
.  I really need some "ammunition" to let him know the consequences of keep that much mail in Deleted Items.
Could you tell me when Outlook starts, does it enumerate the Deleted Items folder as it does the Inbox?

I have to agree with Robert's point here. The question of whether or not the user should be doing this answers itself: of course he shouldn't. On a lighter note there's a Dilbert cartoon from 2003 which covers this very point:
    http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/2003-11-13/
I'd suggest you ask him to create a sub-folder of his inbox and get him to move everything over, then he still has his history and can use deleted items the way it was intended.
The question I would ask is are you sure that this has any bearing on his Outlook freezing issue? I have encountered people who never empty their recycle bin and I have encountered issues with Outlook freezing, but I don't recall ever having the two together.
If you still have issues after he's moved everything then it's a general Outlook freezing issue, so you have to look at those sort of things. For a start, is it bang up to date with Microsoft Updates? If so how big is his mailbox? Presumably he has an ost
file, so how big and fragmented is that? I'd probably try creating a new Outlook profile. If not then what add-ins does he have, could they all be disabled for a while to see if it's one of them, then add them back one at a time? If not is it worth running
a repair in Office? I've had that fix a fair few issues.
Just a few thoughts. I don't know if any of them will help.

  • Development tools for Project/Server Project Online in O365

    Hello,
My company is seeking to unify it's IT PMO using Project Server or Project Online. I notivced that the Project Server certs have been deprecated and the pages ar eno longer available. Does that mean Project Online is the replacement/continuiation of that
    product?
If so, what are some development tools you would advise for me to have to be able to develop/modiify and administrate Project Online in O365?
    Thanks,
    T

    Hi,
Indeed Project Server and Project Online are 2 different products. You have to notice that Microsoft regularly releases new version of Project Server (2003, 2007, 2010, 2013). Some old version feature might be deprecated indeed. Moreover Project Online is
a new version on the Microsoft solution that doesn't require to have on-premise infra.
Note also that Project Onlie is meant to be used quite out-of-the-box whereas Project Server on premise allows you doing custom development.
Below a link for Project Online:

  • Installed mountain lion and developer tools no longer found

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and all appeared to go well. However, "make" is no longer found. I checked and the developer tools are at revision 4.4, so it appears to be a path issue. I noted that my Developer directory is now named Developer-old, so I suspect this was an intended change during the upgrade.
Any suggestions on how I restore the path? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Xcode?
    Thanks

I've tried to but on the install for Airport Utility 6, after the download I get through the introduction then the license then I get "airport utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported" and that's it, no more options!?
