Device address book suddenly empty

I'm seeking assistance to solve a mystery that just occurred without any sort of warning.  I attempted to place a call on my (don't laugh BB 8700) and was amazed to see nothing in my address book?  I downloaded updated Desktop Manager and went through the drill of backing up and did so several times, but nothing shows up in my address book on the device.  I know that there are addresses on the SimCard, because after all of the backing attempts, some of the addresses I had entered in my phone now appear in my Outlook address book.  All of the other functions seem work fine---e-mail, phone, text, etc.  So absent any sort of knowledge on matters such as this I can only assume that the address book function/app on the device had been compromised somehow.
If there is anyone out there with knowledge on the above I would be totally appreciated.
Thanks,
Mick

i just had the exact same experience last night. however, when i synced with .mac it emptied my .mac book as well (i have it set to sync both - not overwrite .mac)
I have a total backup that I have been keeping for months using backup - so I guess I will have to resort to that - I looked around in the application library for a history file or something ond only found 2 data files both of which were quite small. (20kb)
The only addresses that show up in my empty book are the apple company and my card.
The only thing I can point to is mail and address book hung a few days back and I had to force quit.
i would really like to know - I almost had my wife giving up her paper address book this year after the big christmas card season - now without trust - that is going to take a long while to get her back to it

  • Address book suddenly empty!!

I don't know why, but all of my email addresses are gone. HELP!

Nope. You launch AddressBook, then click on the menu bar items: Addressbook->File->Import->Address Book archive.
BTW, /User/username/Library/Application Support/Addressbook/ is the path from the root-level of your boot volume (what you see when you double-click on the top-most, right-hand disk icon on your Desktop). The slashes indicate that the item following is in the underlying directory (folder). Thus, if you open the window to your boot HD drill down (open) the Users folder, then the folder with your username, etc. you'll eventually get to the AddressBook directory/folder which contains the items.

  • Address book is empty after hard drive failure followed by timeline backup from Drobo

Imac has been running very hot, hot enough to fry an  egg. It had a HD failure during this time and when the HD was replaced I expected the heating issue to be resolved as well. However it was not and so it has been at Apple store for a week as they try to find out what is causing the overheating. They decided it was because the RAM was running at 100% and yet could not find out why.  Backup was restored from a drobo raid.  They decided it was best to completely wipe it clean and then to start adding the apps back one at a time. I dont really know how to do this and I am concerned that right now with only safari and address running it is getting VERY hot again. There are 3 external HD connected. I dont know how but my address book is empty and I dont have evernote any more and I am confused as to what to do next and how to deal  with this overheating issue. I would appreciate any and all suggestions but please dont get too technical with me as I am probably much older than most if not all of you and work best with visual instruction. I follow every instruction EXACTLY so if Im told to look for  a specific app or file or whatever and it is called something different than the instruction I am given I will never make the connection so please if you can help be extremely accurate in your instructions. With trepidation and frustration I anxiously await HELP!

I think you were probably given bad advice to wipe your drive. That's the sort of advice people give when they don't know what to do and just want to get rid of you. So my suggestion is to restore all your data from the last Time Machine backup that was made before the drive was wiped. Do you know when that was?

  • Connection Specific Error When Processing Device Address Book

    Hi,
I am using Desktop Manager 4.5 and am getting a "connection Specific Error" on an 8310 when synchronizing a Device Address Book with the desktop. I get this error when processing record 43 of the 374 record of the address book. Is there a way to edit/remove the record on the device to work around the problem versus losing all the records and starting over. I have already cleared the file on the device and restored from the desk top, but apparently the backup also contains a copy of the corrupt record. This must be a common problem. Can any one refer me to a help file that will walk me through a solution?
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Address Book is empty after iSync & Hot Sync

    Hi,
I have a Treo 650 and use iCal & Address Book instead of the recommended Palm Desktop. I was having trouble with the iCal retrieving information from the Treo, but after HotSyncing & iSync, was able to get the info updated. But now all the contacts in my phone are gone. The catagories are there, but no info. Not only that, but my address book is empty. I never backed up the info. Do you know where I can find the information hidden on my hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Robert.

If you have not subsequently attempted to synchronize, you can attempt to restore your Address Book contacts by locating the AddressBook.data.previous file here:
    Macintosh HD:Users:<username>:Library:Application Support:AddressBook
If you drag the AddressBook.data file to the trash, you can then rename the AddressBook.data.previous file AddressBook.data and launch the Address Book.
As you've discovered, you need to periodically back up your contact and calendaring data, which you can easily do simply by selecting the appropriate Back Up… option under the File menu in the Address Book and iCal.

  • The last time i synced/backed-up, my contacts on iphone are gone and address book is empty.  how can i get them back?

i have an old mac book os x version 10.4.11 and an old iphone 3g.  i've never had a problem syncing and backing up before, but the last time i did, it deleted my contacts on my iphone and my phone/address book entries on my mac book. any suggestions on how i can re-create?  and, why would it have "deleted" my info this time?  thank you for your help!!

OK. I signed into my Icloud account on my computer and just the basics
were there. My contacts, calendar. find my phone. No picture Icon.
In reading I had to Photo stream from my camera roll. It sounds like I
should just backup everything to Itunes in the future which saves everything.
I have a new device and will try to restore.
    Thanks.

  • IOS Address book with empty contact

I saw some issues in the iPhone address book. I am not sure it is issue or not.
We can create the contact without any information. I mean click the create button and just save. It is saving. what is the reason?
    Are their any particular purpose?

I've noticed a few major discrepancies between Address Book and Google as well.
Companies tend to duplicate as people.
Deleting the person in AB has no effect on Google.
Deleting the person in Google results in both being deleted in AB, but the company remaining in Google.
There's also a LOT of minor differences between sync'd contacts and imported contacts in Google (groups going into comments, lost images, etc).
I'd love to slap whoever is responsible on both sides. I've written data migration code before, it's not that difficult, and should've been ironed out a long time ago.

  • All my contacts in Address Book suddenly vanished

    Hi,
I was updating a contact in Address Book, (usual story, new address and email address arrived in a Christmas card), and when I clicked on the 'save' button my address book window suddeny lost all it's data. The page I was updating, which had previously been showing the contact details, now showed as 'No card selected' And at the bottom of the window it said '0 cards'
All my groups were showing as having nothing in them either.
Any ideas how I might get all my contact data back, please?
(I have a feeling that the data is there somewhere, because if I start to write a new email message auto-complete remembers and fills in the address. (Which it gets from address book, doesn't it?)

    Update:
I have used Time Machine to replace the Address Book app with the app that was running satisfactorily a few hours ago, but it has made no difference whatever. I still have a completely blank book.
Is there a data file somewhere I could re-load using Time Machine?

  • Address book suddenly lost all my addresses!  Please help.

What can I do? Not even sure if it's on my 'back-up' ext hard drive...
    Did it really just disappear?

If you backed it up onto your external drive it should still be there.
It might be worth booting from your install disc, navigating to Disk Utility, and then repairing your boot drive.
If no joy, you could also check into some of the software for rescuing data like Data Rescue II. I believe you can download a demo to see if it will work for you before purchasing it.
Do you still have the original hard drive in your iBook? If so, it could be beginning to fail, as they generally have a useful life of 3-5 years. Check the S.M.A.R.T. status--if it says anything but "verified", your drive is dying. If it's old, it could still be dying, even if it doesn't show up in the S.M.A.R.T. status yet.
    Good luck!

  • Address Book empty, not allowing imports

Following upgrade to Lion my desktop address book is empty. Big problem, because this is the one used by mail and for other purposes. The address book is successfully populated in iCloud and on my iPhone, it's just the desktop address book that is empty.
I exported all the address cards from iCloud to desktop, then double-clicked to open them in address book. Nothing happened.
Would like to populate the address book via import, but that option is grayed-out on the address book drop-down menu. Pressing option-O (the import shortcut) achieves nothing.
In systems settings > iCloud, "Contacts" is checked - so what appears in iCloud and iPhone should be appearing on my desktop.
I have no idea why my desktop address book is empty, or why it is refusing imports. Any ideas?

    EDIT: Read next post first.
Create a new User go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the appin this new account, if it works the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If you reinstall and migrate back your Users you'll be in the same place if the issue is isolated to your User.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up in Safe Mode  (It will take more time to startup because it runs a directory check.)
If AB functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them.

  • Address Book Contacts and Mail Previous Recipients Missing/Empty/Deleted

At one point yesterday, I was happily catching up on some email using Mail. All was well. I toggled a message as Junk and went to forward it to [email protected], which was, of course, in my Previous Recipients list. Only this time it wasn't. I noticed, too, in iChat, that all of my buddies had reverted to their IM screen names from their normal Address Book-based First Name/Last Name. So I opened Address Book (which had not been running), and it was empty!
To the best of my recollection, though I have a .Mac account, there was no syncing that occurred during any of this. Worse, when I did a manual Sync to see if .Mac would restore my contacts, it didn't. My Address Book remained empty. Fortunately, it didn't propagate its emptiness to .Mac, which I checked via the Web.
When I fired up my spare iBook, everything seemed fine, and a sync there didn't blow away anything.
I found a few posts that recommended replacing my now empty AddressBook.data file with AddressBook.data.beforesave, which was large enough to seem like it might still have a lot of my contacts. I did this, and my Address Book and Previous Recipients were partially restored. The only problem is that the beforesave file was dated June 2004 and is missing all contact information over the past year and a half.
What the heck happened?! Is there any better solution out there? Any thoughts on why .Mac wasn't able to restore the file? Also, what does Previous Recipients have to do with the Address Book data files?

Is your iBook the way you want it? all of your addresses? if so maybe you could back up that database and replace the old one thats fallen to pieces. If you try that though theres no real chance I think of rebuilding that old one as far as I know. My entouage database was an all in one type of deal. when it fell apart, you lost everything. I went to the mac mail and address book after that. everything is in seperate folders with that stuff. usually I've only seen this on older running installs of OS X. Like there is a bunch of directory probs. then things gradually get goofier over time.
Thats strange it doesn't want to import contacts to your computer.
    I'll ask around

  • Address book iPad 4 names empty

    Hi,
I've just gotten a brand new iPad 4 with the latest iOS sw.
I've restored the backup and configurated it with iCloud but the address book is full of names, empty inside.
If I try to use those names via other programs (ie FaceTime) all the info inside works perfectly while if I go back to the address book is empty.
    How could I fix it?
    Thanks

  • Address book empty...

...and not for the first time. Actually its happened three times now which has prompted me to try and get to the bottom of it.
I have Address Book on my PowerMac (main computer) that syncs with .Mac and I have a PowerBook that also syncs up with .Mac. The final peice of the jigsaw is Entourage on my PowerMac which I use for work mail. This has sync services and syncs with Address Book.
Currently my Powermac Address Book is empty, as is .Mac. My PowerBook is set for manual syncing and has a full Address Book so I don't see that being the culprit. Entourage has a full Address Book but this doesn't tell me much as while it syncs on new contacts it doesn't empty on this error such that when it happened last time I ended up with two of every contact after restoring the Address Book from my backup.
update: Entourage now has three of everyone after restoring my Address Book. Does this mean that since Entourage never loses the addresses then its not the one causing them to go missing. That leaves my PowerMac address book, or more likely .Mac as the culprit?

I don't use Entourage, but today, after I got Mail, Safari, iChat and Address Book all simultaneously freezing (applications not responding), I had to force quit all of them. When relaunching Address Book I had the really annoying surprise to get an empty address book, all my contacts are lost.
This already happened in the past, and digging the discussions I'm not alone. There is a bug somewhere and it's annoying !!!!

  • HT1865 Address Book Empty

I played with sync settings in iCloud yesterday and today, my address book is EMPTY.  Is there a file somewhere I can restore my addresses from?  An entire business relies on this.  We don't use TimeMachine.  I don't see them in our iCloud.  HELP!!!

This stopped happening; not sure why it happened. I'm assuming one of my upgrades fixed this.
I am being more careful about making backups now -- keeping copies of most files in my home directory as they were every day for the last week and once a week for the last month or so. This way, I can recover to a recent version, even if I don't notice the problem immediately; once I had to recover from a very old backup...
