Device-based or User-based Windows CALs?

Windows licensing mode, Per User or Per Device Mode Per
Server Mode, are you using?
Any help or insight would be appreciated.
Kind Regards

  • RDP License Server (Device Based CALs) is not issuing licenses to Devices.

    Hello,
My RDP license server is not issuing licenses at all. Here are my environment details:
    This is workgroup environment
RDP license is Device based CALs and is installed on Windows 2012
RD Session host server is Windows 2008R2.
Full communication is allowed both ways between license server and RD session host server.
Windows firewall is turned off on both license server as well as on RD session host server.
The Local Administrator’s password on license server as well as on RD session host server is same.
Now, on RD session host, when I run tlsbln.exe manually, it pops up the usual xxx days left balloon warning.
However when I run the License diagnostic utility under RD session host Snap-in, the utility connects to the license server fine and shows me the stats. However, in these stats, it show installed licenses are 20 and available license also as 20.
On the License server, under License server snap-in, My license server also shows that installed licenses are 20 and available are also 20.
This is not right. The installed should show 20 but the available license should show 19 as my desktop should have consumed one license.
I had 2 more laptops connecting fine to the RD session host sever and still the available licenses number was still 20.
Besides, on license server under the license manager snap-in, it did not mention any device names connected. Meaning, it is not aware of it at all.
Could you please help me understand what am I missing here. Why my license server is not issuing licenses?
    Thanks.

    Hello TP.
Unfortunately, there are no footprints at all. I have already checked the Even
viewer logs on RD session host server as well as the License server. No relevant events are logged.
Also, I have tried with numerous new instances (This whole set-up is on Amazon Web Services). So no, this is the only license server and the RD session hosts do not have any existing license server lurking
    around.
I know that this DOES work and I made is work in the past.
However, Our license server got infected and hence I had to crate a new one and now I am facing with this problem.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Talking to C# based WinRT components that contain UI features like XAML based user controls from a JavaScript based Windows Store app

Can you create a WinRT component written in C# that consists of a library of XAML based controls and then used those controls within a Windows Store app using WinJS or via a JS Cordova plugin for Windows 8.1 & WP8.1?
Is this possible or can you only use a C# based WinRT component that contains a library of XAML controls in XAML/C# based Windows Store apps?
My understanding is that a C# based WinRT component containing non-UI code (i.e. no XAML controls) can be used in a Windows Store app written C#, VB.NET, JavaScript or VC++, but not sure if that principle would work with XAML controls
wrapped via WinRT types. In theory a XAML control is a C# class, so could work, but not sure how would JS code read that and then launch for example a page or user control from/into its HTML based UI?
    Sandip Ahluwalia

Right. The code in your app is C# code, but the actual Xaml controls (like the rest of the Windows Runtime) are native code. They are projected into each language (C#, VB, C++ in the case of Windows.UI.Xaml) in a way that appears natural for that
language and the interop layer is hidden.
You could expose a Xaml control in a Windows Runtime Component written in any of C#, VB, and C++ to an app written in any of C#, VB, and C++, and the control would appear as a normal C#, VB, or C++ runtime class. This won't
work for Xaml controls in JavaScript, since the HTML window doesn't have the Xaml hosting infrastructure, but for non-UI code you can write a WRC in C#, VB, or C++ and it will appear as a normal JavaScript class to a JavaScript app.

  • AMD based Windows systems

The "Windows Offline Download and Installation Instructions for Java Runtime Environment" has the following : -
"Note: For AMD based Windows systems, the installation file is
    jre-1_5_0_11-windows-amd64.exe"
Does this apply only to 64 bit systems?
I have an older system with an ATHLON XP 2200 PLUS Socket A (1800mhz) CPU running Windows XP.
I am having trouble running some JAVA applets with Firefox and want to make sure I have the correct version of JAVA installed
    Thanks
    Tarras

You should just download the "normal" download. The AMD64 one is just for people running a 64bit system with a 64 bit Windows OS. That's a very limited number and if you're in there you definitely know it.
So just grab the "normal" download (I can't remember but it will be marked with one of "x86", "i586" or just "intel").

  • Linux based windows spyware scanner

Can anyone recommend a linux based windows spyware scanner?
I'm running a couple of windows boxes in vmware and would like to mount the disks up under linux and scan them for viruses and spyware. I'm using clamav for virus scanning but I'd like something to pick up spyware as well.

    Hello,
The sources files (.FMB, .MMB, .PLL) are cross platform (same major version). You just need to compile them on the target runtime platform to get the executables.

  • Joining a "now" window with a tuple-based window

I got an error when writing a CQL query that joins 2 streams, one with a "now" window and one with a tuple-based window, like:
    select * from stream1[now], stream2[rows 1]
When this query fires, I get a "TableSource not defined" error for stream1. When I change stream2[rows 1] to a range-based window, like stream2[range 1 seconds], the error goes away. What could be causing this issue?

    Hi prajulakc,
Thank you for your question. Currently the active window selected when you create a new window that new window will take the active window's screensize.
You can add a preference: see also [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/754273 question/754273]

  • SQL Server Processor/Core Licensing and Windows CALs

I've scoured the internet for an answer to this question, so I'm assuming the scenario isn't as common as I think, or people are purposely looking the other way because they don't want to know the answer :)
The application in question is pretty simple - An ASP.net web application using ASP.net forms auth (no end-user Windows Authentication).  Using Windows Server 2008 Web Edition, we've confirmed that no Windows CAL is required on the front-end web tier.
So then on the back-end data tier (SQL Server) it also seems pretty straight forward.  As far as I can tell, the SQL Server licensing makes it pretty clear "...users who input data into, query, or view data through a web-based application... require
a CAL".  So that makes it pretty obvious, you need a CAL or a per-processor/pre-core license of SQL Server.
Here's where it gets tricky... What about the licensing requirements for the Windows Server that SQL Server is running on?  Do we need a
WindowsCAL for each connection from the Web Tier to the SQL Server? Note that Windows CALs and SQL Server CALs are completely separate in terms if purchasing, and nothing says a SQL Server CAL is of a higher
order than a Windows CAL (thereby covering both).
It would seem ridiculous (IMHO) to allow unlimited connections to SQL, but then dump you back to the CAL model on Windows (since there is no "unlimited" option in Windows Server).  But licensing is a strange beast, and non-compliance is not
    something I'm interested in.
Any insight with pointers to Microsoft documentation would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks guys,

For those of you who would like an answer on this without calling licensing support, here's the answer :)
Windows Server 2012 does NOT have a CAL limitation for "public" web traffic.  I specifically asked about ASP.net Forms Authenticated users, and the licensing specialist said any website that uses anonymous authentication which then passes
auth onto some other back-end process (e.g. ASP.net forms auth) you do not need a Windows CAL.  You DO need a Windows CAL if your application is somehow tied to services on the Windows box where the website user actually enters credentials which are authenticated
against the local account store or domain controller.  So to me, that's a pretty simple answer -
    anonymous auth = No CALs
    integrated auth = CAL required
Ok, onto SQL Server... As quoted from my original post, SQL licensing makes it very clear that ANY connection to the database requires a CAL, even if it's multiplexed through IIS or some other middle-tier.  Bottom line? Simple answer here as well:
public website with a SQL back-end = per-socket or core-licensing (since you can't count "CALs" on a public site)
Finally, the most illusive question (for me anyway).  What about the copy of Windows running your SQL Server?  the answer here was  - No CALs required if it's purely a SQL Server connection.  Meaning, if all your Windows server is doing
is running SQL Server and fielding query requests from your front-end IIS ASP.net app, you're do NOT need any Windows Server CALs.  You obviously do need SQL CALs or socket/core licenses, which I covered above.  You will however need Windows CALs
on your SQL Server box for any Support specialists or Deployment folks who remote into the machine using TS or using UNC file shares and such to work with the server.
Hopefully that helps someone else looking for a quick answer.  And as the moderator noted, if that doesn't make sense you should definitely call the licensing specialist.  They are very helpful and surprising quick to answer questions (without
    any sales pressure).
Thanks for posting this, I am in the same boat. I will have a public facing web server and a backend SQL server. The web site requires all users to login so they can see the content. We use forms authentication as well (no Windows or Active Directory authentication).
The application does all the authentication itself using the backend database (credentials are stored in a database table).
I just called the licensing pre-sales number and spoke to a rep who said the web server would require CALs (or an External Connector in this case), because I am requiring people to login to view the content. He said it did not matter what the authentication
method was. I clearly explained the web application handles all the authentication, but he still said we would need CALs in this case because users must authenticate to access the content. He likened it to a museum. If you need to buy a ticket to get in to
see the content (in this case login to the web site), you need CALs he said.
He also said I would need Windows Server CALs/EC for the Windows server that hosts the database. I will be using SQL Core licensing, so no additional SQL CALs will be needed.
Just thought I would share what I learned.
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I have been doing a lot of reading on CALs lately in anticipation of launching a public website.  Reading the license agreement, I don't think you need CALs on the front end Windows Server 2012 just because people
are authenticating.  The Windows Server 2012 license agreement makes no mention of this that I can find.  It only says you need CALs for employees or your affiliates' employees.  A non-employee visitor does not fall under the definition an affiliate.
The SQL Server licensing is tricky, and not written for public website access.  Is every user with an account to your online store need a CAL?  The only other option is SQL Server Enterprise licensed by CPU cores.

  • Authenticating a user through Windows NT Domain.

    Hi there,
Could anybody please help me out with this issue.
Can a user, who logs into the web application, be authenticated from the Windows NT Domain. I'am only using JSP's and Servlets in my web application on a web server.
Basically all my user's UID and Passwords are present on a Windows NT Server. The requirement in the project is such the I cannot create a seperate table in the data base to hold the UID and Password information. So I have to authenticate the user from Windows NT domain. Is any one out there aware of a way to achieve this.
Any kind of information in this regard would be greatly appriciated.

See if you can use the Windows NT based authentication module that comes with Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS)

  • Windows CAL

the environment is a mixture of Windows 2003, 2008 and 2012 different editions. All of them are mixed physical and virtual combinations. All the domain controllers are in Windows 2003. With respect to CALs, what CALs will be required? 2003 or 2012?

This is an exerpt from the Windows CAL Licensing guide:
A Windows Server CAL gives a user or device the right to access any edition of Windows Server of the same or earlier version. (You cannot use an earlier-version CAL to access a later-version server.)
    Document available here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/8/9/68964284-864d-4a6d-aed9-f2c1f8f23e14/Assessing_Windows_Server_Licensing.pdf
    For further information about CAL:
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/client-access-license.aspx#tab=
So you would need Server 2012 CALs.

  • How to Back Up User Files (Windows 7 64-bit ) in HP laptop?

    He everybody!
    I have a HP laptop
    Product Name: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex
    Product Number : LM610EA#A2N
I have  read 'How to Back Up User Files (Windows Vista or XP)'
Back up files with the HP Recovery Manager
The HP Recovery Manager is used to back up user files to an external USB storage device.
1-Boot to the recovery partition 1. by pressing F11 .
    2. Click Advanced Options .
    3. Click Backup computer files .
4-Select the type of files you need to back up from the list and then click Next . It will take several
minutes to locate all of the files, no matter where they are on the hard drive.
    5. Select the destination device (external USB hard drive or a USB flash drive/Memory Stick).
    6. Click Next to start the backup.
New files will be backed up. Depending on the number of files located, it could take an hour or more to backup
    the file.
However, When I have done those steps I encountered these:
First: I didn't see any option to save the files in an external hard disk or even another partition other than Windows partition.
Second: I haven't find any option to back up my files in other partition other than Windows partition, I have let Recovery manager proceed to save at any place it prefers. After that, I found that Recovery Manager gave me an error during copying the files :
Recovery Manager failed in finishing backup files, error: FFFFFF14, although the percentage of progress was %67
Also, I have enough free space on Windows partition.

Would it be quite good if anyone could take some time out to reply me?

  • Authentication for easy vpn users using windows ad and xauth on pix firewa

    Hii
We need to authenticate the VPN client users from windows as pix as the network device where all vpn configuration done
Need the accounting for those vpn users.
    Thanks
    Manish GaurPlease guide me

    Manish,
Which version of the pix os are you running 6.x.x or 7.x.x. If your using 6 your have to use radius. Follow this guide for radius:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_configuration_example09186a00800b6099.shtml
For the actual pix configuration its easiest to run through the vpn wizard in PDM (PIX Device Manager)
The radius guide should work for 7.0 if you run the ADSM Wizard for the vpn portion.

  • TS1363 I'm trying to update to newest software, but during proccess, an error accured, now the iphone 4s wont do anything, it only shows plug into itunes. when i do, the device is not recognized by windows or itunes. any ideas?

im trying to update to newest ios version. but during the proccess, an unknown error accured, now the device wont do anything, just shows the plug into itunes screen. the device does not show in windows or itunes. the iphone wont do anything. i tried restarting, it shuts off and back on, but only shows plug into itunes thing. any ideas?

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • Running under a standard user in windows 7

We just bought Photoshop Elements 13 and when the user tries to run the program it run really slow and freezes quite a bit. This user is a standard user in Windows 7 no Administrative rights. If you right-click the icon and choose Run As Administrator it then runs like it is intended to. We don't allow our users to run as Admin so I need a fix for this. The only other thing I am wondering is that the computer is in a Active Directory Domain environment and we push our Group Policies to our systems. One of the policies redirects the users folders to a server share so the My Documents, My Photos, etc. are actually on the server drive not the local drive. Is that part of the problem?
    Any insight would be awesome!
    Thanks,
    -Scott

    I agree with Erland.
SQL Service account is used while performing any OS level operation by SQL Server process (sqlservr.exe). On the other hand, the account which is connecting to SQL Server will have it's own permission in Server/Database provided via Logins/Users.
