Device Control/Capture Problem

My computer set up is an HP xw9300 workstation running Windows XP. I shoot 720/60p HDV, sometimes with tape and sometimes with tape and hard drive. The cameras are JVC and the deck is the JVC BR-HD50. Although I had some difficulty getting Premiere from CS2 to recognize the deck for recording, it eventually did. No problems at all with Premiere in CS3. I recently upgraded to CS4...and haven't been able to capture anything since. In the dviice control, both under preferences and in the capture program, the settings that worked in CS2 and CS3 are JVC/Standard. Using the same settings with Premiere in CS4, device control will control the deck functions (forward/play/back), but it will not record and it will not stop the deck. I've tried all the JVC settings...none work. I've also tried to capture without device control...no soap. Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on here? Your help and suggestions are appreciated.

  • Device Control Capture from Beta SP Deck into a G-4, Using Firewire ???

    Hello,
I have been told by many people that it is possible to capture video with device control from a Beta SP deck, if you have the correct setup. But no one seems to be able to tell me exactly how using a G-4 Dual 1.25, or G-5 single processor computer. What I'm hoping to do is establish a serial interface that will allow for device control from a RS-422 circumstance. I'm hoping that I can do this, and still capture using DV- I don't want to have to resort to using a video capture card, for an assortment of reasons that I won't get into.
Question: Is there anyone out there converting video from a beta sp deck to firewire in FCP, using device control, and if so, what is your set up?
    Thanks!

  • No communication with device control through AJA Io?

So this is weird (to me). I'm trying to capture a few Beta tapes and can't seem to get the device control going. For whatever reason I'm getting the "No Communication" message in my Log and Capture window. Of course, I'm getting the image in the window, but I can't control the deck through Log and Capture.
    My settings seem right:
    -Deck in remote mode
-FCP set to AJA Io device control
-Capture settings at AJA Io Betacam to DV (I know this isn't a problem because I can see the image)
-I have unplugged and reset each cable in each port on the deck, Io, and computer
The only thing I can think about is that the last footage I captured was from my MiniDV camera, so I must have tweaked some kind of a setting that I don't know about. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stef

Device control: AJA Io RS-422 NTSC
The RS-422 cable is connected to both the deck and the AJA. The Firewire cable is connected to my 400 port and the AJA.
There has to be some kind of a problem with my 400 port, because I just daisy chained the AJA (which only uses a 400 cable) through my Lacie drive, which is connected to the laptop through the 800 port.
Is there an explanation for this? Hopefully besides, "Sounds like your 400 port chucks it, Stef. Time to go get a new one."

  • Major Batch Capture Problem!  Please, Please Help!!!

I have a project that is 1hr 41 minutes. The footage is on 3 tapes.
I need to re-capture the footage into this project to make some changes. When I try to batch capture the clips, I get an error saying that I am trying to capture drop-frame footage to a non-drop frame clip. This of course (it would seem) is impossible, as the footage was captured from these very same tapes.
I first tried ignoring the warning and capturing the footage, but that didn't work, and all the footage was in the wrong places.
I then looked at the off-line time code and went to the same time-code on the original tapes, and the time code is not correct! For instance, at the beginning of the sequence, the person introduces themselves. This footage is from tape 2 at timecode 2:06:48:07. If I go to that timecode on the tape, that is not what is there.
Does anyone have any clue what I could have done wrong? Is there even a way to change a clip from drop-code to non-drop?

It is true. Try it. I just did to make sure.
When you capture a clip using Capture Now AND Non-Controllable Device, the timecode starts at 0:00:00:00 each time you begin to capture a new clip.
If you use the device control & capture now, you retain timecode from the source tape. But if you turn off device control, you turn off timecode.
The FCP manual talks about it on I-276, but the language is pretty vague. It basically tells you the ONLY time you should set it to Non-Controllable Device is when you don't have timecode to begin with.

  • Unable to initialize capture device and device control in HDV

I shot with a Sony HVR-Z1U/Z1N and am using a Sony HDV 1080i tape deck to digitize.
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and installed FCP Pro 5 on it. After getting over some time code issues we were chugging along, when on the 4th tape the image on the log and capture screen suddenly dissapeared (I could get audio and could see the image on the tape deck). Well after taking the tape out, checking and rechecking it I popped it back in and ever since then, I have been getting this error mssg "Unable to initialize capture device and device control."
I have tried deleting the preferences and starting from scratch. If I do that, and choose the easy setup with HDV- 1080i60, it gives me this error "Unable to locate the following external devices- HDV (1440 X 1080) 30fps.
I upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 this morning and upgraded the OS to 10.4.7 and QT to 7.1.3 and still no change.
Im at my wits end, Ive been working on this for a whole week now.

It has been reported to take more than one attempt to correct the installation but, if properly executed on a machine without other system problems, the QT reinstall process does work. The key element here is you must reinstall QT after you trash the receipts. The process is listed below.
    x
To do a full quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
If this doesn't work, then the problem lies elsewhere:
    1. your system - user preferences, firewire ports or other system elements.
    2. your equipment - camera/deck/firewire cables.
    3. your process - not setting up the software properly or using the software erroneously.
Listed below is a troubleshooting process. Not all steps are appropriate but the general process of isolating the problem is useful.

  • Device Control for HV-20 capturing DV?

In FCE, I'm using the "DV-NTSC Firewire Basic" Easy Setup to capture DV (not HDV) from a Canon HV-20. It works great using "Capture Now," but "Capture Clip" apparently is not available.
Can anyone confirm that full-fledged device control is not available in this configuration? (That is, I can't preview the tape and set In and Out points before capturing.)

My mistake, duh! The Capture window works just fine in this configuration. One must, however, click the "Play" button!

  • Firewire device control with analogue capture?

    Please please help.
I am trying to capture HDV footage (shot on a JVC HD251) in SD via our KONA LH.
It seems farily easy to get the KONA to downcovert but i don't currently have any device control so therrefore have no timecode.
On the AJA website this article seems to suggest that it is possible to have device control over firewire whilst capturing via the KONA.
http://www.aja.com/html/supportkonaLHedoc.html and navigate to the WHITEPAPER: HDV Workflow
Any help would be more than very welcome!
    Thanks in advance
    Mike

sadly we are currently using our JVC HD251E camera which does not have RS422 as it is not a deck.
it is the device control via firewire that is hinted upon in the whitepaper from the link at the top of this post that i am most interested in as it would be really useful if it is in fact possible.
We don't intend on using our cameras as a decks for much longer and are looking at the possibilites of purchasing the BR-HD50 which has RS422 which will be ideal.
Even with this we will still be using our Kona to downconvert...unless the JVC deck can downconvert via the firewire...which i guess i will only find out when trying it!
Thanks for the suggestion all the same...but please please someone tell me if this is indeed possible. I don' tunderstand why AJA would hint at it if it is not possible.

I've seen one other post about this and I've tried the responses to it: trash prefs, rebuild permissions, reboot the computer (let it rest and uplug), trash quicktime receipts and reinstall, uninstall AJA software and reinstall.
The only thing I haven't tried is reinstalling my OS.
    I'm on FCP HD.
I can capture and print to tape as an uncontrollable device. But I need to edit to tape tomorrow using the RS-422 to my digibeta deck via the AJA IO. It has worked in the recent past (last month), but in the past two weeks I can't control my deck.
Also, I get the message "This computer does not have any serial ports required by this protocol" when I try to set up a new RS-422 AV device control setting.
    Help!

Jerry, I can't thank you enough. I still have a few hairs left on my head thanks to you.
I downgraded my AJA firmware and that did the trick.
I had been on the phone with AJA last week tryingto fix this problem and we had tried everything except that. You know, the trash quicktime receipts, trash prefs, hard re-boot, etc.
They were stumped and finally decided it was a Mac problem not an AJA problem. Ha! (Very nice folks though.)
Your's was an answer I didn't find anywhere else in all my searching of forums.
    Thanks again!

  • PP CS5 Capture problems..

I recently got my new Macbook and Adobe Production premium hoping to finally edit some of the work that was waiting for this gear but have run into a little problem that scares me a bit.
    Equipment list:
Sony PD170 (SD Mini DV Tape)
    13.3'' Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz
    Premiere Pro CS5
I tried capturing the footage off a tape of about 50 min and at around 28 min it stopped an gave me the option to save the clip as you'd expect it to do once its done capturing. I tried again and again and now it does it within the first 10 min of the capture at random points.
    Things I have tried:
Switched off ALL screen savers and energy saving options like turning off hard disks etc.
Unchecked "Abort on dropped frame" checkbox
Fiddled with In and out points
Checked all settings, capturing in right formats etc. Even set up device control to recognise my camera..
I read somewhere that it suggests that you need at least a 7200RPM Hard drive to capture and it seems like my Macbook only has 5400RPM drive. But surely a brand new Macbook Pro can capture form Mini DV tape??? I have successfully captured the entire tape in iMovie before my Adobe software arrived so why the problem now?
I am really stressing about the RPM thing as I cannot believe that I can pay that amount of money for something that cant capture tape!
Any help would really be appreciated!

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 Batch Capture Problems

    Hi,
I'm sorry for the repost, but the older questions I can find on this topic won't allow me to reply and they were never answered (last post several months ago).
I'm having the batch capture problem with Premiere Pro CS5.5. Capture with device control works great when single capturing. When I log clips and attempt to batch capture, though, I get the "capture failed: device not found" error in my capture log. I have checked through the FAQ and the complete premiere manual on batch capturing. I've set my device (still using a Canon XL1) and even checked the video size...it matches that of my project (someone on another forum mentioned that this could be an issue). I have had no luck.
Could anyone tell me if this issue has been resolved, or redirect me to a resolution?
Thanks in advance for any help!!
    Steve

I have encountered this problem if the current tape position is beyond the last recorded point when you start the batch capture or if any "OUT" points are beyond the last recorded position or if the capture spans any unrecorded portions of the tape. I always thought it was my camera but maybe it is a PPro issue.

  • Device Control wont stay set to none

I am using Premiere CS4 with a Canopus ADVC-300 capture device.
I have used this for years and never had a problem with Premiere providing  I set Device Control to “none” both in the Preferences and the capture window.
My problem is I can’t get the Device Control in the Preferences box to stay set to “None” any longer. I can set it and then close the window and check back and it insists on going back to the “DV/HDV” setting.  I have changed it to none at least a dozen times and it keeps setting itself back to “DV/HDV”.
This crashes the capture every time.
Any ideas on how to get it to stay where I set it?
It stays set to “none” in the capture window but I can not make the preferences menu do the same.
I can reinstall the program but that is a last resort due to the time it takes.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Guys I appreciate your help but nothing is working.
I tried deleting the preferences file and the same thing happened again anyway.
I then uninstalled the whole Creative Suite and deleted all files associated with it and all entries in the Windows Registry related to it.
I then reinstalled everything ( spending the hours it took) and it is doing the same thing again. I can not think of anything that has changed on the machine at all and I have never had this happen before in the years I have been using Premiere.
Everything used to work fine and Captures would go without a hitch even if they took hours as long as the Preferences were set to “None” on Device Control. But now it just won’t stay set, even after reinstalling everything. The Capture Window Device Control will stay set to “none” but not Preferences regardless of what I do.
I tried changing other Preference Settings and they stay changed but not device control. And it is the same regardless of whether the ADVC-300 is on or off. I even tried deactivating the Firewire Port in the Bios just to see what would happen and it made no difference.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
My last option is to reformat my drive and reinstall everything from scratch but that will take me a day and a half.
I can not understand what is making it do this when it never did it before.
Here is what I am using:
Premiere Pro CS4 with a Canopus ADVC-300 Capture Box. It is installed via Firewire and goes to the Firewire  Port on the Motherboard.
I am using XP Home SP3 on a Core I7 Computer with an Asus motherboard.
If no one has any ideas do me one favor. Go into your own Preferences file and set Device Control to “None”, close the panel and open it again to see if it is still set to none.
It may help me feel a little better about reinstalling all my software and spending the day and a half doing it if I know it is something with my machine and not the program itself.

  • Capture problem -- strange error messages -- computer freezes

Upon 25 minutes or so into capturing, I get a strange error message to this effect: "analyzing DV audio -- validating audio data" -- the video slows to a crawl until it completely freezes -- rainbow wheel whirls nonstop -- sometimes command-option-escape force quits it, sometimes not and I have to reboot the computer. Sometimes I don't get the error message -- the computer capture screen freezes but the camera keeps going. Anyway here are the specs: Intel dual-processor iMac 300 GB with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.5., format Mac OS Extended journaled. External hard drives Western Digital 500 GB formatted the same; QT 7.5.5; FCE 4.0.1; Settings: DV NTSC 48 Khz. Format & use - DV NTSC. Device control preset: firewire NTSC. Camera - Canon 900 ZR (miniDV tapes) hooked up to back of iMac via 6 pin shiny orange firewire for capture. I capture to Mac hard drive and then move video to external hard drive. Yes there is enough space and RAM. I had this problem before except the error message was "locating time break." So it was suggested I capture to hard disk. Seems like it's always something! I've lost hours trying to fix this problem. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

12 bit. Haven't been having any audio problems with FCE. However, I tried the nightmare iDive and never got audio (much less anything else) to work with that. So I uninstalled it and asked for my money back.

  • FCP 7 no longer supports device control for sony cameras?

I recently tried to capture some HDV footage from my Sony HVR-A1U miniDV camcorder in FCP 7.  It's been a little while since I used this camera, but I am certain that the last time I used it to capture footage it was a controllable device.
I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, can anyone comment if this rolled-back device control for Sony cameras?  It wants me to capture as a "Sony Firewire device" which is listed under "non-controllable devices"  I am 100% certain I've previously logged timecode and batch captured with this computer and camera.
It initializes the camera just fine, but it captures with no control, as in "capture now."
    I'm on FCP 7.0.3 on a 2 X 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel OSX 10.6.8.
I've tried all the usual re-starting FCP and the device and plugging in/un plugging iLINK cable etc.
Does anyone have a work-around?  I'm not crazy for thinking this used to be possible, right?  Should I roll back to Tiger if I want to use this camera?

I'm on FCP 6.0.6 using OS 10.6.8.  Not using that Sony camera, but the Sony Z7U.  I know this is comparing apples to oranges.  But I can log and capture as a controllable device.  I'm thinking your problem is related to something else besides the OS being 10.6.8.
Have you repaired permissions after you upgraded?

  • Batch capture problems HDV

Hi we are trying to batch capture HDV 1080i 25fps footage filmed from both a Sony Z1 and Z7 camera in Final Cut Pro 7. The problem comes when we try and batch capture or clip capture logged footage in final cut pro, the tape seems to be stuck in a continuous preroll loop on the first clip that needs capturing, the only way to capture any footage is through capture now. Finally the capture deck we are using is a Sony HVR-M15AE deck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like there may not be enough preroll space on the source tape ie not enough preceding unbroken timecode to allow for the preroll time needed ... if so then you may need to try a shorter preroll for that clip. Check (and possibly edit) the preroll setting in your Audio / Video Settings >> Device Control Preset. (You may just want to create a temporary duplicate preset for this shorter preroll setting).
    Hope it helps

  • Sony device control for HVR V1E in FCS2

This is a question for Apple really.
Can we get a Sony device control that works with the V1?
I have Final Cut Studio 2, and I've just had the biggest headache trying to get the thing to capture from my camera. I've had to use the Firewire Basic 25 setting just to get it working, but that's far from perfect.
The problem with all of them seems to be a delay - FCP always ends up 'searching for media' or just fails altogether. It's not because of broken timecode either.
    T

I know exactly what you're saying. I thought this was how the camera worked too.
The confusing thing is this: having recorded at 25P on the camera I did various capture set ups in FCP. On the 1080i setting, I got an interlaced picture (the way I noticed this was by spinning the image a little in Motion). To try to remedy this effect I set up for HDV 25P, and lo and behold, no interlacing - no jagginess when spinning the image.
Interesting, no? Trouble is, FCP doesn't seem to like my camera whatever settings I use.
