I want to design a photon counter for my optical measurement (very low intesnity). I need experiences of design and advice to choose a suitable counter : low rate to high rate (up to 100M counts /sec), little dead time..., TLL input. I was told about such a PCI counter card.

The PCI counter/timer board that matches the specifications you have given would be the PCI-6602. You can find more detail about it in the NI 660x Specifications. The 100 counts/sec would be possible but you will have to use the prescaler. More information on this process can he found in this article which also has links to examples. Take a look at this device and see if it matches what you need.

Start from the beginning:

Всем доброго времени суток! Я как и вы форумчане являюсь фанатом компании APPLE. Проживаю я в Российской Федерации. Начал свое знакомство с этой компанией в далеком 2010 году с устройства Ipad 2 тогда еще на ios 5. В январе 2014 я сделал себе подарок и купил iPhone 5s на OC IOS 7. Купил я его официально по официальной Российской цене которую выставила Apple точнее за 1100$. В нашей стране это очень большие деньги. На эти деньги я бы мог жить 3 месяца. По сути я стал обладателем топового (на тот момент) устройства от любимой компании Apple. Мой iPhone 5s прекрасно работал на ios 7. Иногда встречались легкие фризы анимации, и не критичные баги, но кто без греха? Любимой компании я был готов это простить так как вижу, что она старается быть лучше и не стоит на месте. Посмотрев презентацию WWDC на которой представили iOS 8 нас с вами уверяли, что все стало лучше, быстрее, функциональнее. Я твердо решил, что обновлю свой iPhone 5s до iOS 8.0... APPLE выпускает новую OC iOS 8... И я обновился! За красивыми словами, что нам говорили на презентации, за великолепными функциональными возможностями новой iOS скрывалось "нечто". И это "нечто" превратило мой телефон в... "тыкву"! Да! В ту самую тупую тыкву! И сейчас я объясню почему я думаю, что это тыква, а не роза.
Море багов... причем они ужасны и страшны так как не дают мне в полноценной мере насладится работой моего iPhone 5s!
Начнем по порядку:
1. Потоковая передача данных посредством технологии "Air play".
"Air play" перестал нормально работать! Он стал часто отсоединяться от Apple tv и Apple airport express последнего поколения. Apple tv 2g не может принять сигнал от моего iPhone 5s! А когда все же это у него получается то воспроизведение видео длится не долго оно просто обрывается и не дает подключиться повторно! Помогает перезагрузка Apple TV и жесткий сброс посредством удержания кнопки "HOME" и кнопки "POWER". На "Apple TV" стоит последняя прошивка так же эти проблемы проявлялись и на предыдущей прошивке устройства.
2. Встроенный в систему Браузер "Safari".
Вкладки в "Safari" стали постоянно обновляться когда я переключаюсь на другое приложение или на другие вкладки! Явная нехватка оперативной памяти (на iOS 7.1.2 с этим все гораздо лучше. по крайней мере при переключение вкладок не происходило повторное обновление предыдущей вкладки).
Воспроизведение онлайн видео на не оптимизированном для мобильных устройств сайте в браузере "Safari" толком не работает! Оно включается и загружается чуть ли не до бесконечности! Порой просто черный экран с иконкой "Play" на которою нажимай хоть 100 раз, а результата 0!
Пролистывание страниц в браузере стали до ужаса резкими и не плавными! на iOS 7.1.2 все прекрасно, плавно и красиво и таких багов нет! Общая заторможенность и задумчивость браузера "Safari".
Если видео все же запускается (что для меня приравнивается к чуду) то при перемотке фильма происходит вообще что-то непонятное... Перемотка сама выбирает с какой минуты и секунды мне смотреть фильм (чаще просто начинает воспроизводить все с самого начала) либо не реагирует вовсе... Эта та самая магия Apple? Непохоже.
3. Меню многозадачности (двойное нажатие кнопки "HOME").
Вызов многозадачности (посредством двойного нажатия кнопки "HOME") стал работать с задержкой, с лагом, c дерганой анимацией, а порой и вовсе без нее.
Центр управления (который вызывается свайпом снизу вверх) стал тормозить! Да! Именно тормозить! Анимация выпрыгивания шторки центра управления стала воспроизводиться с ощутимой потерей кадров! Если на iPhone 5s под управление OS iOS 7.1.2 все происходило плавно, красиво и динамично то в iOS 8.0 все выглядит как на iPhone 5 под управлением iOS 7.с чем это связанно решительно не понятно! Графические отличия iOS 7 от iOS 8 практически равны 0, а скорость работы сниженна практически на 50%! Как?! Почему?! Почему мой iPhone 5s стал iPhone 5?! Это искусственное замедление моего устройства для повышения спроса на iPhone 6 или все же недоработка iOS 8.0 для iPhone 5s? Дорогая компания Apple, я очень надеюсь на 2-е. Особенно эту нехватку fps в анимации шторки заметно если открыть многозадачность (посредством двойного нажития кнопки "HOME") и вызвать центр управления и вы увидите что анимация проигрывается рывками и не плавно! На IOS 7.1.2 такого нет! Центр управления выпрыгивает плавно и красиво! На iOS 8.0 это происходит постоянно! Даже если отключить избранные контакты и недавние вызовы (я грешным делом подумал на них) которые появились в iOS 8 (они находятся выше программ на панели многозадачности) проблему не решить. Так же, если вызвать центр управления на экране блокировки то падение FPS будет очень заметно даже для неподготовленного зрителя (особенно если взять два iPhone 5s один под управление iOS 7 и второй на iOS 8 и сравнить их в лоб). Если в центре управления нажать кнопку airdrop (air play) то анимация ее появления опять таки проиграется рывками и ужасно не красиво и не плавно (особенно заметно на экране блокировки и при сравнение в лоб)! При телефонном вызове происходит уже совсем уж бессовестное падение FPS при вызове центра управления и при других действиях!
И да, для меня это критичная проблема! Я не хочу чтобы при переходе на iOS 9 мой iPhone 5s превратился в iPhone 4 на iOS 7 (Вы видь все помните эту страшную историю?)! Я хочу чтобы мой iPhone 5s работал так же плавно как и на iOS 7.1.2! Ни каких оправданий для этой искувсственной заторможенности я не вижу! iOS 8 красивей не стала! графических элементов больше не появилось! Так выходит компания Apple делает это специально?! Идем дальше по списку!
4. мелкие баги которые просто разрывают мой мозг и убивают всю красоту использования "Самой лучшей мобильной операционной системы в мире"!
4.1. При входящем вызове когда вы нажали иконку принятия вызова телефон еще около 2-3 секунд вибрирует и проигрывает мелодию. На iOS 7.1.2 мелодия и вибрация останавливается как только вы приняли вызов и вам в ухо не играет ваш рингтон в исполнении "imagine Dragons", по щекам не бьет придуманная вами вибрации в стиле "Тик-тоник".
4.2. Когда смотришь страницы в интернете телефон ужасно-ужасно сильно греется! Парой обжигающе сильно! На iOS 7.1.2 такой проблемы нет! Телефон горячий, но не так сильно как на iOS 8.0!
4.3. Папки на домашнем экране открываются с задержкой в 0.5-1 секунду это сказывается на общем впечатлении от iOS 8.0.
4.4. При создании множества (12 штук) иконок в одной папке если резко открыть папку и сделать свайп влево то следующие иконки в этой папке не успевают загрузиться и отображаются с задержкой в 1 секунду.
4.5. При создании папки с 1-9 иконками если проделать описанное выше действие то произойдет сбой анимации (этот же баг есть и в iOS 7.1.2). Это крайне не приятно эстетически.
4.6. Пролистывание в приложении "Настройки" стало ужасно дерганым. Хотя не только в приложении "Настройки" но и по всей системе и в приложениях в целом...
4.7. Пролистывание на Домашнем экране стало менее отзывчивое на действия пользователя все движения иногода происходят с дерганой анимацией и какой-то задержкой на действия пользователя.
4.8. Довольно часто и без объяснимой причины происходит отключения сенсора устройства. То есть экран не реагирует ни на какие действия пользователя! Помогает нажатие кнопки "HOME" либо жесткий сброс посредством удержания кнопки "HOME" и "POWER".
4.9. Большинства людей на iPhone 5s пропадает связь с сотовым оператором. Просто берет и теряется и из за этого я уже пропускал звонки от своих близких и друзей (стоило бы вам порадоваться, что я не пропустил звонки по рабочим вопросам).
5.0. Многие обладатели iPhone 5s и iPhone 5 жалуются на ухуджение работы аккумулятора. Я честно говоря этого не заметил, но не будем сбрасывать этого со счетов.
Итог.
А теперь встает довольно интересный вопрос, почему? Почему мой iPhone 5s стал тормозить? Почему при отсутствии графических улучшений абсолютно одни и те же действия стали воспроизводится с потерей fps, тормозить, лагать, зависать, вылетать? Почему если положить рядом iPhone 5s на iOS 7.1.2 и точно такой же iPhone 5s на iOS 8.0 и вытянуть панель управление, вызвать панель многозадачности, провести все остальные действия описанные мною то на устройстве под управлением iOS 7.1.2 все будет работать без каких либо задержек, лагов, ухудшение в отзывчивости интерфейса, уменьшении fps и просто без вылетов из приложений написанных непосредственно компанией Apple? Я не вижу абсолютно ни каких преград в том чтобы сделать так чтобы iPhone 5s под управлением операционной системой iOS 8.0 работал с той же плавностью, с той же отзывчивостью и скоростью, что и iPhone 5s под управлением iOS 7.1.2! Не вижу от того, что этих ограничений нет!
Есть еще множество различных багов о которых я сейчас даже не вспомню (так как этот текст я пишу на эмоциях (положительных) так как смог откатить свой iPhone 5s обратно на iOS 7.1.2 и он как будто ожил новой жизнью) и пока глубокоуважаемая мною компания APPLE не устранит эти не доработки я не буду возвращаться обратно на iOS 8.0! если устроения этих багов, недоработок, умышленного ухудшения работы (практически одинакового по производительности в сравнении с iPhone 6) IPhone 5s не произойдет и компания APPLE будет и дальше относиться к потребителям своей продукции как к бета тестерам я буду вынужден организовать петицию и подать коллективный иск в суд не только в своей стране (коей является Российская Федерация) но и в США и в других странах где людей так же как и меня пытаются обмануть, ввести в заблуждение и заставить покупать новые устройства компании APPLE не дав на то ни каких более существенных объяснений кроме как < iPhone 6 стал на 25% мощнее по с равнению с iPhone 5s>!

Я надеюсь компания Apple все еще прислушивается к своим пользователям и я так же надеюсь, что она (Apple) все же одумается и постарается в ближайшее время дать пользователям не таких уж и старых устройств (iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad mini Retina) наслаждаться и дальше всеми новыми возможностями операционной системы iOS 8 без лагов, подвисаний, перегревов, заторможенной анимации. Swap space/dump devices for large RAM systems
We are in the process of changing our standards for our server builds and need some input. Currently, we match the swap space on local disk with the size of RAM. I know this isn't necessary for "swap" any more, but we use the swap area as the dump device as well, so we are sure to have enough space there to contain a full memory dump if the server crashes.
Now we have systems coming in with 128 or even 192 GB of ram. They contain only two disks (146GB), which we mirror. Obviously there isn't enough space on these disks for 192GB of swap or a dedicated dump deivce.
We need the ability to capture full dumps when we have a crash, probably with a dedicated dump device. Should we start ordering SCSI disk enclosuers for this purpose? Can we make a SAN volume our dump device?
What is everyone else doing with these larger RAM systems?Compressed dumps have been supported in UNIX flavors for many years, so you need to dig further into it. It is supported in linux, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't in Solaris. Tru64UNIX, HP-UX, AIX, and others all provide this capability.
True, you can't get internal disks bigger than the 146 on Sparc platforms, but you could attach a "boot array", like a storagetek D240 system, or iScsi or fiber attached storage. The only caveat is whether Solaris, in the throes of a crash, still has the drivers loaded that can address an external disk subsystem. That would have to be investigated with SUN. And these arrays support the new 1TB SATA disk drives. We are deploying 6140 shelves with 16TB per shelf. Simply amazing... -

When I update apple driver, a pop-up error message "The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible driver for your device. If the foldre contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems."

Please also check Event Viewer if it identify this problem.
In addition, also check Device Manager, if similar driver already installed, try to uninstall them and reinstall new driver again for test.

thanksYou need to understand the difference between the GPIB bus commands and instrument commands. You seemed to have looked at the basic example that's in the manual. The first line in the example does some things to the GPIB bus's interface management lines like interface clear (IFC) and remote enable (REN). You do not issue these commands in MAX's communicator when you want to program the instrument. Those sort of commands are available but you don't normally have to do any of that. You do need to issue the commands that are listed in the section on remote programming. The very first example listed is the command "CM". As the manual states, if you send CM {j} where {j} is 0-3, you set the counter mode. If you send just "CM", the instrument returns the counting mode. You will not get a response back from the instrument when you set something. You will only get data back from the instrument when you issue a specific command that tells the instrument to return something. Instruments designed within the last 20 years have better command sets than what you have to work with. These "newer" instruments use a "?" at the end of every command that tell the instrument to return data.

Communication problems: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
Hi all,
I'm developing an applet and using the OMNIKEY 5321 CL reader for communication and testing. One of the requirements for our card is to read large binary data.
For this purpose i used extented lenght APDU to read the data from card.
When I tested it via JCOP simulation I was able to read up to 32767 bytes as described in specification. But problem occurs when I test it with reader, in this case I'm able to read max 298B in APDU response. When I send greater byte count than 298B i have got following error in JCShell plugin:
jcshell: requestSessionKey.jcsh[1]: Error code: -6 (Card terminal error)
jcshell: requestSessionKey.jcsh[1]: Communication problems: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
Regarding the extend lengh APDU support it should by OK from the OMNIKEY. I'm using newest driver 1.2.9.2 for Win 7.

There is a Goclipse project as well as the source. You will need to install Go and run "go get github.com/ebfe/go.pcsclite/scard" to install the required PC/SC wrapper. Once you have done this you can run the program with -file <apth to text file>

Access share on NSS4000 with error: A device attached to the system is not functioning
Hello,
We use Acronis True Image Server to backup 4 Windows 2008 Standard Server system
with 2 different domains, each containing a DC and a RDP-Server.
After Server reboot, backup will run only once a day.
The next day backup aborts, and while trying to access
the network share like \\ip-address\share, as configured in Acronis
I get the error message: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
On the other hand, I can ping the NSS4000 and access share by using the
network (netbios) name instead of the ip.
This will work only for one day, also.
Now, if I try to access the share on the NSS4000 again by ip,
I get the error code 0x80070043 The networkname can not be found.
Ping on ip and netbiosname works.
Share access from one server to an other is not affected and full funtional at all times.
On the first sight I thought, that there it might be with the authentication protocol NTLMV2.
So I configured the GP to send only NTLM Authentication only, without fixing the problem.
Fyi:
I use a NSS4000, Firmware version 1.16-3
The NSS4000 is not a member in neither domains.
I created a dummy user account on each domain, an created a local user on the NSS4000 related
to the dummy user account on each domain.
A good answer helping me to fix with this issue, would be great.I am constantly seeing this error at multiple sites on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Standard and DataCenter.
I have counted over 50 different server I manage with services such as domain controller, hyper-v, file servers, exchange 2013, SQL 2008/2012, and print servers.
I have seen it happen on machine that have been in production for over 2 years and to machines that were just created last week.
It is happening on metal, hyper-v and esx vmware servers.
It is happening when the machine have updates waiting or no updates, or after updates have been applied and awaiting a restart.
It is happening on Dell PowerEdge server, HP Proliant servers and IBM servers.
It is happening on servers with Intel and AMD chip-sets.
It is happening on machines that are a part of a domain or in a workgroup.
It is happening on machines with AV of Bitdefendor, Trend Micro, Vipre, Microsoft Endpoint, and Symantec Endpoint.
Only a restart will fix it.
I have ran process monitor on several of the problem machines and I cannot find anything.
Since I have only started seeing this about 6 month ago it must be a Windows update causing it.

I don't have a ton of experience with Labview, but I'm trying to get the Stanford Research Systems SR400 gated photon counter to use a fixed gate mode to count. I looked at the example driver that I found and realized that it isn't capable of doing anything more than a cw sweep. I found this driver in the forums (http://forums.ni.com/attachments/ni/40/1879/1/subvI.vi), but in the process of updating to labview 8.2 (from labview 7.1 it said), it is missing some connections somewhere. I was wondering if anyone knew how to find the problem pieces in it and how to fix it. I have another question about the SR400. Is labview capable of trigging it through the software, or do I need to have an actual physical trigger going in to the trigger input. Thanks for your help.

I'm unsure if the SR400 is able to trigger externally, but if in the manual for the SR400, you're able to find the command for it, you should be able to easily implement it. If it's GPIB communication, just open labVIEW, and go to Help->Find Examples->and Search for GPIB, and you should find a nice example called "labVIEW<->GPIB.vi". If it's serial communicaiton, just search "Serial" and you should be able to find a nice example called "Basic Serial Write and Read.vi". Just copy the triggering command if it's found in the manual into the write field, and you should have no problem implementing it. I like these two examples a lot, because they're easy to build from.

NI 6259 photon counter min pulse detection
Hello,
I have a PCI 6259 DAQ card which I'm using as a counter. Is there a limit to the minimum pulse width it can count while operating as a counter? My photon counter gives out TTL pulses with widths of 50ns which I think is below what the counter can read unless I am mistaken. I'm using the 100kHz internal clock as the clock source. Is there anyway to get the counter to pick up such small pulses?
Would the NI PCI 6120 DAQ card be a better choice for this type of measurement? I should be able to get my hands on one shortly.

Go to Solution.A 50 ns pulse corresponds to a 20 MHz freq. You should be able to capture/measure such a TTL pulse with a 6259, but I don't think you'll really want to be measuring pulse *widths*. You'd only be able to get a nominal count of 4 timebase edges per width with a possible +/- 1 count uncertainty, i.e., 25% measurement error.
More likely, you'd either want to:
1. measure the period/frequency of successive rising edges of these 50 ns pulses, effectively timestamping every detected photon. Brief fast bursts of photons may produce an unrecoverable FIFO error. A newer X-series device with a bigger counter FIFO would be a better choice if this is an issue.
OR
2. perform "binning" by counting the # of these 50 ns pulses that occur during equal time intervals. Here you are pretty immunce to brief bursts of photons, but you need to sustain long-term throughput over the PCI bus. You're probably pretty safe sampling at <= 100 kHz or so, but if you need better precision on the bins & thus faster sustained throughput, I'd again recommend a PCIe X-series board.
You might also have to watch out for a feature known as "Duplicate Count Prevention" which could impact your measurement data if you ever have 0 photons in a given interval. The faster you sample, the more likely this is to come up.

I have three iPhone 4 models purchased in late 2010 (for my family) that all share the same iTunes account for access to apps and music, but each phone/user still has his/her custom contact list, email accts, and select lists of apps and music from the one iTunes acct library. The problem is I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct. What is the best solution to manage these devices for software updates, apps? This is probably a common problem with families wanting to share apps and music without realizing the issues created by this approach. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates. The problem would be how to keep all the apps, etc from being deleted off the second and third phones that were originally loaded from the one iTunes acct. Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. Hopefully, someone out there can help me?? Please?

Connect phone to laptop, AutoPlay Box appears, click open Device to view files, internal storage, DCIM, Drag all Pictures/Videos into folder on desktop. Message pops up within a few seconds, Saying 'A Device Attached To The System Is Not Functioning.'

It is possible that Adobe Reader tries to check for updates when it is launched, then finds a faulty network connection.
Check the Device Manager for non-functioning network devices.
Also try http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/ to find other potential problems on that system. -

I am trying to connect to Oracle8i Personal Edition through a JDK1.2.1 application using the classes111.zip or classes12.zip package. After running the application I get this error message: UnsatisfiedLinkError: ocijdbc8: A device attached to your system is not working. I you have any idea what is happening, please answer inmediately.
You are using the oci8 driver so your program is looking for the native mode Oracle Client software. Install the Oracle Client software or use the thin driver.

getting a java.util.zip.zipexception : a device attached to the system is not functioning error - what could cause such an error?
My program finds all zip files in an archive and then searches through them for xls files, which it extracts and re-locates.
I havent even a clue where to look for the cause of this exception but Ill attach at the bottom the code in the general vicitiny of the trigger so that you can get kind of an idea what Im trying to do, and if im lucky, even spot my problem. :) Thanks!!

Either you have plenty of harddrives or L: is a mapped drive.
Is it working at the mapped drive?
When you say on the network, how are you accessing the files?
Could it be possible for another user to lock a file, so you wont have access to it over the network?
