Device Indep. vs AdobePDF 8.0, Distiller, Indesign

I am trying to make a valid PDF using the Device Independent PPD, but it's not working for me. Our normal workflow is to make a Postscript file using the AdobePDF 8.0 PPD setting. When we Distill that, we get a PDF that has the correct bleed and trim marks and an even space around the page.
Using the DevInd PPD, the size of the is limited to the page size in the Distiller setting's default page size setting. In other words, my page is cropped to the lower left of the entire page, missing the top and right side bleed and marks. I've tried changing some options in the Distiller setting to try to use the "real" page size, to no avail. Rasterizing the PS file in Photoshop does give me the entire bleed and crop areas, so the data is in the file. I thought DevInd would be more flexible than the Adobe PPD, and considering the snafu going on with the PPDs and print drivers in Snow Leopard, it seems prudent to find a way to use the DevInd setting, but we must have correct PDFs! What's the way to Distill a page but have it use the document size not the Distiller default page size?
Mac OS X 10.6.4, InDesign CS5
I tried doing a search, but search is broken today (no descriptions of topics, only a link back to the forum)
Will cross post in InDesign General as this applies to Distiller as much as ID.

A note from myself to myself and anyone else reading this thread in the future.
On your Mac, to install the Adobe PDF 8 or 9 printer manually (you will need admin privileges for some of this):
Open the package contents for Acrobat 8 or 9 (I will refer to v9 which I have in front of me). Go into Contents > MacOS > SelfHealFiles > AdobePDFPrinter
Copy the file "pdf900" to HD/usr/libexec/cups
Copy the file "AdobePDFPDE900.plugin" to HD/Library/Printers/PPD Plugins
Copy the file "ADPDF9.PPD" to HD/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
Now start up the Terminal. Drag the file "cupshup.pl" into the window. Press return to run the perl script. It should set up the printer and print queue. If not you may get an error message 10x about it. Either you didn't have permission or put a file in the wrong place.
If you are in Japan there is a ja.lproj, and some other localized version, maybe it's Korea and Chinese also included in the other .lproj folders.

  • Photoshop text opened in InDesign looks aweful

I must being doing something very wrong: creating a book cover (using iPad display dimensions) in Photoshop, adding Monotype Corsiva title/author text onto an artist's .jpeg (150 ppi). It looks fine in Photoshop but when I save and place into InDesign (same iPad dimensions) the text looks degraded. I've tried .EPS and all anit aliasing settings to no avail. Can't find anything in the manual, so if anyone has any advice I'd be v. grateful. Mucho gracias...

Display screen dimensions do not use PPI. Why are you defining PPI?  Why are you choosing EPS?
Use PDF and create your graphic at the specific pixel dimensions required for your display device: 1024x768 pixels.
Also beware that InDesign defaults to display low-res previews of placed images. You need to explore InDesign's view options to preview in high resolution.

  • Why are keystrokes repeating in InDesign CS6 (8.0.2)?

I'm using InDesign CS6 on a new 27" iMac that I bought in April running Mavericks 10.9.5 and suddenly when I type in my InDesign files, the keys are repeating and so are my mouse clicks (both are bluetooth devices. This is only happening in InDesign and in multiple files using different fonts. The typing is more noticeable than the clicks but the clicks are very frustrating also. I go to zoom or create a box and it won't let me so I have to move everything very slowly to get it to work. I'm baffled and losing money trying to figure this out. Please help!

No, I haven't because the problem is only in InDesign and only began in the last week or so.
I have repaired permissions and replaced Indesign preferences and temporary files. Not sure what else to do.

  • FrameMaker 8.0p277 and printing to Acrobat Pro 8 & 9

All this year (2009) I've been working on several contract documents using FrameMaker's conditional text facility.
FrameMaker is 8.0p277 and the OS is Windows XP Pro SP3.
In May the old workstation became cantankerous so I updated to a new HP xw4600 with a Quad Core, 4GB ram, and 2 x 250GB SATA disks. Cool!
I applied all the MS updates and then treated myself to a clean install of Adobe Design Premium CS4, then installed and updated FrameMaker 8.0 (without the PDF Maker). The Adobe Acrobat Professional 9.0 in CS4 was patched to 9.1.2.
If I open a document in InDesign CS4 and print it to the 'Adobe PDF' printer everything works just fine. Same for Illustrator CS4.
But FrameMaker fails with this message:
    ... followed by:
I have also attached the most recent FrameLog fiole...
Howsomever, if I print the same document to my HP laserjet 4300dtn (or the laserjet 5200 or the FujiXerox DocuPrint 2100) it works just fine. So I assume the document itself is OK.
If I select the printer to be one of the 3 above and then print to file (and create a .PS file), and then open it in Distiller 9.1.2 it produces a perfect .PDF file (shades of Acrobat 3 and the watched folders here!). But, if I select AdobePDF printer as my output device before generating the .PS file, Distiller reports parsing errors and does not produce output.
With a doffed hat to Arnis and Dov I refrained from trying 'save to PDF'
This looks like a corrupt printer driver...
After talking to Adobe Support (ID 121 702 309) I have tried each of the following (and then re-run my testing cycle as outlined above):
Running the 'Repair Acrobat Installation' process from Acrobat Pro 9.1.2.
Setting Acrobat PDF as my default printer (strong whiff of "eyes of a bat and wings of a newt" about THAT suggestion).
Un-installed and then reinstalled Acrobat Pro 9.1.2.
    Un-installed and reinstalled FrameMaker 8.0p277.
Un-installed and then reinstalled Acrobat Pro 8.1.4.
    Un-installed and reinstalled FrameMaker 8.0p277.
    Sworn loudly.
Anyone have some ideas / fixes / incantations???

    Hi Laurence,
If you can produce PDFs from the AdoebPDF via ID and AI by printing, then I'd suspect that the driver is probably ok. (Note: from ID and AI, it is better to SaveAs PDF, since these have their own internal PDF generation capabilities.)
Also, with FM8, if you're making interactive PDFs (i.e. not for press), then it is ok to do the SaveAsPDF route, since FM has some post-processing modules that kick in to clean-up the .tps file prior to handing it over to Distiller. So, the process is no longer is identical to printing to file and distilling.
On the FM side, make sure that the tagged PDF setting is turned off in your PDF setup and have the setting for generating named destinations for all paragraphs enabled.
You also might want to download Sundorne's SetPrint ( http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm  ) utility to ensure that you always have the same printer instance (AdobePDF) enabled when you start FM.
Have you also applied the MS hotfix for the PDF font issues? Details are available here: http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/07/hotfix_for_framemaker_1.html
Last desperation move would be to create a new custom PDF printer instance using the Distller PPD and a copy of the AdobePS installer.

  • ID postscripting problem

I have a client who still requires print pdfs created with the postscript/distiller method. I used to be able to do that from within the InDesign CS4 print dialog box by choosing Postscript File as the printer and Acrobat 7 (or 8 or 9) as the PPD. That would produce a ps file that when distilled produced a pdf at the page size of the document. I have now upgraded to CS5.5 (though I still use 4) and also upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. When I go to print to Postscript in either ID CS4 or CS5.5, the only PPDs I can get are Device Indepent and a gazillion ones for commercial printers from Brother to Samsung to Apple Laserwriter. When I print to ps using the Device Independent PPD, I get a page size of 8.5 x 11, regardless of what the actual page size is.How can I get my Acrobat PPDs back, and if I can find them where do I put them so as to be accessible with ID print dialog?

I think you may find the information you need down in the comments in this blog post: InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Acrobat’s Adobe PDF Printer Replaced in Snow Leopard

  • Sharing an editable file and sending the app to the publisher

Hello. I am a little confused about some parts of working with apps in dps. We are two persons working together, and therefore, of course, we would like to share the apps we create. But from InDesign it seems that the files can only go one way, and that is up in the cloud. I found out that I can download the .folio (even though it is very cryptic to do so) from Folio Producer, but I cannot download anything editable, which will be necessary if we are to collaborate between more computers. In addition, it would be very convenient to be able to share a file in the process of making it, before I upload it, select icon pictures etc. and press that blue publish button. This is a very time-consuming process.
Also we would like to send the apps to the publishers that we are working for, so they can upload them with their Apple account, not ours. We do not want to pay monthly for their books. If we send the .folio file (the one I got by pressing publish in Folio Producer and then export) to them, would they be able to publish the app by uploading it to Apple?
I should mention that I am only using the free version of Creative Cloud. I don't know if this has any limitations relevant for these problems. I know that I can pay extra to be able to share in the cloud, but that does not change the fact, I think, that you cannot edit the files that you download. I am not even able to edit my own files uploaded and downloaded with the same computer and the same account.
    Thank you in advance.

Can you explain how you currently collaborate when designing a book that you can't do with DPS? You may just need some guidance on best practices with DPS. DPS has several built in collaboration features.
You can create a folio and share it with another user. That user can contribute articles to your folio and view your content both on device and on the desktop.
You can create a folio, builda single edition app, sign it with a developer certificate and another user can load it on their device for viewing.
You can create Indesign files and share them with another user via dropbox or sneaker net. That other person can create folios with these files for no charge and view on device and desktop.
Create a folio, publish it and share the web viewer URL with another user so they can view it in a browser.
About the only collaboration mechanism DPS doesn't support is the generatio of a folio that can be emailed to another user for viewing.

  • How to use .joboptions (Printer settings) to make PDF

    Hi,
Currently we using .joboptions settings file to change the Printer setting of PDF & make another PDF with that settings. Following is the non-programmatical process to use .joboptions
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers -> Adobepdf->printing preference->Adobe PDF settings->Default Settings as Our joboption file.
is it possible to use .joboption file programmatically to change existing pdf settings (For ex. Changing Document size, font embed, save as image pdf etc). Using .joboption file we can change entire properties of PDF. If we can use .joboptions file to change PDF settings in any programming language using any of Adobe dll's or Services then please let me know.
    Regards,
    R.Balajiprasad

JobOptions files are only used with the Adobe PDF Printer, LiveCycle PDF Generator and the Creative Suite applications.
They are not used with the programming libraries.

  • Dreamweaver MX versus Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard

Hello, I am new in this forum and would appreciate any help I can get..
I recently bought a new iMac Intel computer with  Snow Leopard 10.6 installed.  When I try to connect to the remote site, the program crashes every time.
I have since been told, that this version (more than 10 years old) cannot be updated, will not be compatible with Snow Leopard.
If this is correct, I can save myself many hours of trying (I am not an expert) and can start saving up some money.
Any advise is very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Monique

If you didn't want to wait for Adobe you can see your options here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/upgrade/
If you have PS CS4-CS, then you can upgrade to Design Premium for $1,399 or Web Premium for $1,299.  Basically they are the same suite with one difference.
Both include, Dreamweaver, Acrobat Pro, Illustrator, Fireworks, Flash, Media Encoder, Device Central.
The Design Premium includes InDesign (which is a great program for print layout imo).
The Web Premium includes Contribute and Soundbooth.
I chose the Design version this year after using the Web last year because InDesign to me is a better value because I never used Contribute and since I have a Mac, Soundbooth serves a duplicate purpose to GarageBand.

  • Is it time to consider a new iMac?

I am a freelance graphic designer and am having a hard time deciding if it is time to in fact me looking at a new machine. While it might sound silly, I'm looking for some honest feedback. I have an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.3), 4 GB RAM. Some days it still seems to run pretty well and other days - ugh, like watching paint dry!!! Because I am freelance and work from home, I take getting a new machine seriously because of cost vs income. I've had my current machine 5 years. On a typical day I run the following apps (most opened up all the time throughout the day with the exception of Mail & Firefox as needed): Mail, Firefox, Text Edit, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Distiller, InDesign and Suitcase Fusion. I just restarted my machine yesterday and did a verify & repair permissions under disc utilities. I just seem to be experiencing more "hangs" as I call them when I got to open files or go to search something on the internet, etc. Any input greatly appreciated!

    Well,
If you want to spend and outlay cash for a new Mac, that is certainly your own decision.
You wanted advice and here's some additonal advice from me.
I own the same late 2009 IMac model year in a 27 inch screen running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard (THE BEST OS X version Apple and Apple software engineers EVER developed, IMO) and I am still running an older version of Adobe Creative Suite (CS3) with 16 Gbs of RAM and my IMac still flies and works very well for all of my creative graphics and digital drawing and painting work!
I do not like the whole rent- a-software, Adobe subscription plan, also (I do not think any professional creatives much like Adobe's subscription model, either).
I can't say how much better your Adobe CS5 apps will work with the additionally installled RAM, but I know it will be a pretty noticeable improvement.
To find out exactly how much hard drive space you have left, in the Finder, click on the icon of your Mac's hard drive on the OS X desktop, the use the shortcut keyboard keys Command-I (shortcut for Get Info). This will tell you both how much free space is left on your hard drive and how much hard drive space was used.
If your hard drive space has dipped below 15 GBs, then it is time to do some serious house cleaning on that drive.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
    Also, Find Any File
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

    I'm a graphics/media guy & and my mate is a children's book illustrator
working on a little 20 page interactve kids book for 2-6 years old, I'm looking for feedback
on what is the best Adobe program for creating interactve iPad books? and then extending
the material for other tablets. my findings so far.
    - InDesign 6 - Best layout limited intractivity and issues with the folio builder
    - Edge - HTML 5 BUT No Audio/Video
    - Digital Publishing Suite the cost is just silly for the little guy

  • Create iPhone app using DPS

When I created an app several months ago, I remember reading something about how InDesign didn't support the publishing of apps (or something to that effect) for the iPhone. I created my app for the iPad and now can't find the exact reason as to why I couldn't make it for the iPhone. It dosen't have to do with the creation of it because I know you can choose an iPhone as your target device when setting up the folio in InDesign.
Does anyone know where I might find my long-lost answer to this?
    Thanks in advance!

If you want to build for the iPhone using DPS, it "has" to be a multi-folio app - and since its a multi-folio app, it "has" to be hosted with Adobe
Charging for the app will limit your traffic, and giving the app for free is the way to go - however, you have to have a free folio and you will be charged by Adobe for every folio download
Lots of traffic to free app + many downloads to free folio may make this model not cost effective...
After lots of research and trying to figure this out, I dont believe DPS is the way to go when building a single-folio app for the iPhone - just my take
Had to go elsewhere to accomplish this and build apps for the iphone.
and this is on my #1 wish list for sure... I would love to build single folio apps for the iPhone without having to pay for every download.

  • When creating a new DPS should I use sizes offered by InDesign or the display size of the device?

    Hello all,
When creating a new DPS, should I use the sizes offered by InDesign or the display size of the device?  I ran into this question when I was looking up the sizes of different devices and found that iPhone 5s, iPhone5c, and iPhone4s sizes differ than the defauly dimensions offered by InDesign.
Also, should I worry about the ppi resolution?  With iPhone, they all seem to be 326ppi but when dealing with other devices is this something that I should take into consideration?  Ideally, I could be creating DPS apps for all devices offered in the Digital Publishing drop down in InDesign (iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire/Nook, and Android).
Thank you for any help you can provide.
By the way, if it helps I am using InDesign CC.

Using 1024x768 and creating PDF articles will get you OK with both iPad resolutions, and, as Bob L. says, quite decent "one size fits all" result for all other devices.

I have been creating forms in InDesign and pulling into Acrobat XI Pro to do form fields. My client would like to fill in the PDF form using Reader, save under a different name locally on their device, and redistribute. The problem I have is that, sometimes, they want to redistribute the form as Read Only. I know how to flatten the form on a mobile device, but uncertain how they can do that with a PC or Mac using Adobe Reader. I looked at FormsCentral thinking there might be a solution going that route, but don't believe there is. Any advice?

FormsCentral won't help with flattening a form. You could set up the form in Acrobat so that the fields are set to read-only, using JavaScript. Not quite the same as flattening but it's the best Reader can do.
Note that when Reader is used to e-sign a document, it gets flattened, but this won't be possible if you need to Reader-enable the form and under certain other conditions.

  • Frame 7.2 and InDesign CS3 Distiller conflict

I am using Frame 7.2b128, Distiller 7.0. I recently installed InDesign CS3, which uses Distiller 8.0.
Whenever I work in InDesign and create a final PDF, and then go back to working in Frame and generate a PDF by using Save As ..PDF (working in a book with all files open), I get "Internal Error 7204..."
In the past, the only way I could recover was to uninstall and reinstall Frame. Today even that won't work.
    1. How can I generate a PDF in Frame? I get the same error when I use Print to file...
    2. How can I configure my system to use either Distiller 7.0 or Distiller 8.0 all the time, and which should it be? Will this fix the problem?

Indesign's interaction with Distiller is no different from Frame's: From
either application you can print to the Adobe PDF printer instance. From
there, Acrobat takes over and the originating application (Frame or
Indesign) no longer plays a part in the PDF creation process.
Do you run into the same problem when you Export to PDF from Indesign?
Indesign's Export to PDF does not involve Distiller in any way.
Have you tried redirecting the Adobe PDF printer's output to File,
instead of to the Adobe PDF port (in the Ports tab of the Adobe PDF
printer instance)? This shouldn't change anything for you, except to
separate the two processes (printing and distilling). My guess is that
the error you're seeing is a problem with Distiller, not with Frame. But
if you're printing to the Adobe PDF port it's kind of hard to figure out
where things are going wrong. If you change the port to File, you can
print to a PS file from Frame, close Frame, and then distill the PS
file. Obviously any error you see at that point is not from Frame.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat 7?
I wouldn't bother buying Acrobat 8 just to fix this problem, although
uninstalling Acrobat 7 and reinstalling some version of Acrobat might
fix it. Plenty of people are running IDCS3, Frame 7.2, and Acrobat 7
without these problems (me being one of them).
