Device is not iPhone compatible

My son's 4gb iPhone gives him the prompt as if he's connected to a device that's not iPod/IPhone compatible and offers the option of switching to airplane mode. This is all while the phone is in his pocket at work. All the while, the phone will not shut off. I recommended a reset and dumping cookies and cache which halted the problem for a couple of hours. Now, the punch line. This is his 3rd time, this same, identical problem with 3 different phones. If he sends this one in (as he has all b4, Apple has made them all good!) this will be his 4th phone since last September. What gives folks?

I have had this problem. Here is my story:
I tried and successfully cleaned out the lint. however it did not fix the problem.
taking the iphone to the genius bar was the solution because they took a hard look at the connector and realized that it was a corrosion causing the problem ( water damage probably caused by my baby always trying to eat my phone). The genius tried cleaning off the corrosion. again, unsuccessful.
Solution: Free - iPhone replacement, as it was still under warranty. so there it is, this topic can be considered answered if you have tried the lint cleaning and perhaps scrubbing the connector with a toothbrush and doing an air blow and there is no change in behavior. then you can get it replaced.
