Device listing in Time Machine

I have recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite on my 20inch early 2009 2.66Ghz iMac.
When I  enter Time Machine my computer is listed under devices with a number in brackets
immediately after its name.
The Time machine appears to be working correctly having completed an hourly backup just a few minutes ago.
Devices showed my computer originally  as “name”, but is now showing “name”(7)
Is this an issue that I need to address?

Further to my original post.
Devices is now showing my computer as "name" (2) but I have made no changes to my system since the original post.

  • Why no disks listed for time machine

I got my MACBOOK yesterday. When I ran time machine for the first time. it shows: A storage for time machine backups isnt set up. I clicked "set up time machine" , and click: choose backup disk. Howeve, none disks are listed, neither the internal HD, nor a portable disk connect to my MAC.
Don'tknow whether i missed anything, or just did something stupid. Can anybody help? Thanks a lot!!

I have the same problem with my EZQuest 120GB HD that I have been using for many years. I sent all folders/files to trash before trying Time Machine which failed to see this disk. In disk utility, it checks ok (repair permissions and repair disk) but it fails to recognize the disk for partition.
Any suggestions? The "Get info" results are pasted below.

  • Sharing one iTunes account between 3 devices and a Time Machine

    I have a iphone 4S
    i have an Imac
    I have a Time machine
    I have a macbook
I have Apple TV - hard wired to the TV
All devices are using the latest versions of OSX and IOS
My Iphone syncs with the imac Itunes account
All my Music is on the Time Machine which is connected to my router (virgin Broadband)
The itunes account on the Imac is aware my music folder is on the time machine.
My question is - how do i get to use my Itunes account on the Macbook and update playlists and Playcounts on the Iphone and Imac?
I want to be able to play my music on the time machine from any of my apple devices and it update one music Library.
Is there a way i can do this?
Regards and thanks for your time

You can sync your music to each of your devices using the iMac which is referencing the library on your itunes. So all good there. If you want to share the information amongst all your devices then home Sharing will do it. But only if you are in your own network.
If you want to use the same klibrary on your Macbook as your iMac you can point it at the Library on the time capsule.
If you want the content on your Macbook then Home Sharing between computers will let you copy it but it will not copy over playlists etc
Using home sharing you have to have itunes open on your iMac so that the other devices can see it. Also ensure that sleep is not set for your computer.

  • OpenDirectory: Unable To Load Replica List, after Time Machine Restore

I followed the following instructions provided on another thread (Open Directory: "Unable to load replica list"):
Many Open Directory problems can be resolved by taking the following steps.
    1. The OD master must have a manually-assigned IP address on the local network, not a dynamic address.
    2. The primary DNS server used by the master must be 127.0.0.1 (that is, itself) unless you're using another server for internal DNS. The only DNS server set on the clients should be the internal one, which they should get from DHCP if applicable.
    3. Verify that the master's hostname matches its domain name by running the shell command
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
    4. Follow these instructions to rebuild the Kerberos configuration on the master.
    5. If you use authenticated binding, check the validity of the master's certificate. The common name must match the hostname and domain name. Deselecting and then reselecting the certificate in Server.app has been reported to have an effect in some cases.
    6. Unbind and then rebind the clients in the Users & Groups preference pane. Use the fully-qualified domain name of the master.
    7. Reboot the master and the clients.
    8. Don't log in to the server with a network user's account.
    9. Export all OD users, delete them, turn off OD, turn it back on, and import. Ensure that the UID's are in the 1001+ range.
    And got the following results:
    Check.
    Check.
Resulted in the following console output: The names match. There is nothing to change.
The touch command resulted in "No such file or directory." I circumvented this by manually creating the migration directory, then running the command again. The killall command failed saying "No matching processes were found." Opening the server app after that shows no change.
My trusted certificate was apparently not restored from the backup, as it was no longer listed. I switched to the self-signed one until a CSR can be made.
I'm not clear on what this actually means. There is no unbind or rebind functionality in the server app. Not to mention that my users or groups are no longer listed.
Nothing changed after rebooting the server.
Have always logged into server using the local server admin account.
Where is this done? I don't see any place to do this in the Server App.
At this point I'm suspecting that there are some serious Time Machine recovery bugs with server, as I have tried with multiple different restore points all ending in the exact same result.
Any recommendations on where to go from here? I would love to do a fresh install, but need to archive the data from the server first. Unfortunately, I don't see how I can export each users' data without being able to log in as them.

There seem to be some issues with PostgreSQL not running. Marketcircle Daylite and Billings Pro also won't start, and are showing errors to that effect.

  • AEBS, device name, and Time Machine backups, question

Will changing the device name of my AEBS (what shows up, for example, in a Finder window sidebar, affect time machine backups that live on a an AirDisk? I just want to make sure, before I make any changes, that my computers won't 'lose' the existing backups if I do change the device name.

I'm afraid to try it, but that is what I am not clear about. The Drive name isn't changing, just the AEBS device name. The big question is does TM just care about the drive name, or does it also care about the AEBS device name. If you are right, than I am out of luck. But would love someone to definitely confirm.

  • HT201250 Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  I'm trying to restore lost photo files and I see them listed in Time Machine (without use of an external drive), but when I try to restore I get a error code 36.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive?  While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean!  When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message:  "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

Thanks so much Terence.  I tried some of the fixes from that page, but then discovered the suggestion to compress the Time Machine Back up of the original library and transfer it as a zip back to my computer as detailed here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/E9.html
That worked like a charm.  I really appreciate it.

  • How do I delete folders listed in Time Machine that are no longer good?

I AM TRYING TO DELETE FOLDERS ON MY TIME MACHINE THAT I NO LONGER NEED:
MY TIME MACHINE FOLDER SHOWS AT PRESENT:
    DIGI FILES_PE
    DIGI FILES-PE-ACDS
    DIGI-ACDS
    HARD DRIVE
    IPHOTO-PHOTO-PREV-PE
    PREV-ELEMENTS
    WORKING
    I WANT TO DELETE:
    PREV-ELEMENTS
    DIGI FILES_PE
    DIGI FILES-PE-ACDS
When I checked the Help INstructions it tell me to Highlight the file and click the Actions menu (Gear icon) from the toolbar.
Select “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
BUT...when I do that the Gear icon only shows "Move to Trash" Not “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
So when I try to move the old folders to the trash it tells me that the operation cannot be done?

See Pondini's TM FAQs for starters.

  • Can I just delete a previous date from my list in Time Machine?

I have a 1TB hard drive from LaCie and it's almost full. Is it possible to go back to earlier this year and just delete the back up for a certain date?
I can see in the data in the file tree and it looks like Time Machine has literally copied my hard drive for each saved back up...
That's a LOT of data to be saving.
Am I right? It's not compressed in any way?

Here's the problem - I sent my laptop in for repairs, and when it came back, the system no longer recognized the "Backups.backupdb" file that had been running since January - it created a new instance of my computer (2) - and did the whole copy again! (1million+ files) Now I have an old backup file that runs from January 08 to Oct. 10, 2008 and a new one that started October 15. Can I just delete their original one and continue with the current one?
I really don't need to keep stuff since January and I've archived important stuff on DVDs for storage.

  • Limiting Time Machine backup Size with WD MyBookLive and 10.8

I cannot take credit for the any part of this solution; merely for merging and clarifying how the solutions discovered by 2 Apple Support Communities contributors much smarter than I (namely “Pondini” – Florida and  “himynameismarek”) - worked perfectly for my situation. All cudo’s to these two!
I have about average or better PC skills, but am an absolute newbie with Apple. This week I got a new iMac. Having a number of home PC’s all sharing files and back up space on a Western Digital MyBookLive (“WD MBL”) 3TB network drive (NAS), naturally I wanted to use it to backup the new Mac rather than rushing out to buy an Apple Time Capsule.
There are hundreds of threads on limiting size of a Time Machine (“TM”) backup, many of which required entries in “Terminal” or were devised on older versions of OSX. I’m running OSX Mountain Lion 10.8, so was concerned they may not work.
The issues I wanted to resolve were:
Time Machine will use up all of the space on my WD MBL if left to it’s own devices.
The WD MBL is compatible with Mac and PC’s… which is good… but unlike a back up in Windows 7 Pro which will allow you to make backups in a mapped “share” you create yourself, Apple TM Backups will not; they end up in a hidden folder on the NAS (much like PC backups done with WD Smartware)
At first I thought maybe I could limit the size of a share created in the MBL, but not possible, at least not that I've seen and I have searched for days.
    The solutions:
First make sure you have the latest firmware for the WD MBL as of today it is MyBookLive 02.11.09-053. From what I’ve read Western Digital fixed the compatibility issues with 10.8 Mountain Lion just recently.
Next you need to start TM so that it starts to create a back up. You can stop the back up once you see files being copied. Do this before you walk thru the video tutorial by my Marek below. WD MBL will create the hidden folder you need to find for TM Backups. This folder is called “TimeMachine” but it is not visible even in the “MBL_NAME-backup” folder in Finder.
Open safari and type “ afp://xxx.xxx.x.xxx ” but use your own ip address of your MBL. Mine was 192.168.1.120, yours will be different.
It will ask how you want to connect. CHOOSE AS A GUEST even if your MBL is protected… I’m not sure why it works but it does. Then a window will come up asking which share you’d like to mount. You will see all of your own shares plus one called software and now one called “TimeMachine”. Choose that one.
Now in “Finder” you will see a mounted shared item called “YOUR_MBL_NAME-“ (the same as the one that is probably already there but with a dash(-) at the end). You’ll also see a new “device” in the device list called “Time Machine Backups” (If you already have watched the video tutorial by Marek, you’d know you are looking for a file called “YOUR_MACHINE_NAME.sparsebundle”. Well if you browse the folder “Backups.backupdb” in the Time Machine Backups device you won’t find it… again I don’t know why but you won’t. It resides in the hidden folder called “TimeMachine” that is now visible in the thing you just mounted in step 4)
NOW watch this video tutorial http://youtu.be/Nq7mSizqUSI and follow it step by step.
Voila... issues resolved. Thank you Pondini and Marek!

Try Use Terminal to limit Time Machine sparcebundle size on timecapsule,
should work to limit Time Machine backup size on any NAS or external disk (or not...)
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine MaxSize 500000
    to return to ilimited
    sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine MaxSize
if you want to reclame deleted files space shrink it use
hdiutil resize -size 500g -shrinkonly /Volumes/TimeMachineYOURNAME/YOURNAME.sparsebundle/

  • Printer shows up multiple times in my device list

I have an EA4500 router running firmware version 2.1.39.145204.  A device, which I assume is my HP printer, shows up on my device list multiple times (11).  This is illustrated below with the devices status report from the "Troubleshooting" tab of my Smart Wi-Fi interface.  The device listed as "Photosmart Premium C309g-m" is indeed my printer.  The MAC address listed agrees with the set-up information in my printer and it is correctly listed as connected via wi-fi.  There is no hard wire connection from the printer to the network..  As you can see, there is a bunch of other devices listed all with the same name.  These devices have the same IP address as my printer but different MAC addresses.   My questions are:
    1. What causes this situation?
    2. How do I fix it?  By this I mean, how do I remove the multiple listings?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi sgtpepperlhcb2! Duplicate MAC and IP addresses in the DHCP list can be an indication of a possible firmware problem. I suggest you upgrade the router's firmware. Reset and reconfigure the router if the firmware upgrade will not work.

  • Cannot add file in time machine to ignore list

    Hi,
I have here Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and bought a time capsule.
I have parallels installed as VM and file fault is activate for my home directory (I'm the only user on the mac book pro).
Now I wanted to added the paralles harddisk to the ignore.
But time machine does not allow it.
If I open the options all file in my home dir are greyed out.
How can I add files in my homedir to a ignore list in time machine?
    TIA

    Idefix6 wrote:
sry, maybe I understood you wrong.
If I change one file on my file fault (which is around 40GB of size) does time machine then backup the complete sparse file again or only transmit the change?
it only backs up the changes. that's why sparse bundles were introduced in leopard - precisely to deal with this very issue. a sparse bundle disk image as opposed to a regular sparse disk image is split in a number of small bands (8Mb in size by default). when TM does incremental backups it only backs up afresh new and changed bands and hard links the unchanged bands to existing backup copies. that makes backing up sparse bundles using TM somewhat bearable. if you try to back up a regular disk image with TM it will back it up afresh after any change however tiny to its contents. that would quickly fill up the backup drive if you are talking about a 40GB disk image.
If it only transmit the change I can move out my parallels disk to the folder All Users and ignore the file here.

  • Time Machine;cannot remove my backup disk from exclude list

So I had to recently back up my computer in order to get a new hard drive for my 2009 macbook. When I went to put everything back onto computer I accidentally said "don't use this backup".Now it's stuck on exclude list in Time Machine. It's greyed out and I cannot take it off!
(ps. I know there was a previous topic on this but it's closed and didn't have helpful information;yes I went to disk utility and did Command+I not helping)
I have school documents on there so I need to be careful on what I do!

Answering "No" to that prompt doesn't prevent you from using the drive as a backup disk; it just stops that from happening automatically. I suggest you watch a video to familiarize yourself better with Time Machine:

The Time Machine was working fine until this morning when I tried to reconnect to the internet wirelessly on my PowerBook G4. The Time Machine network wanted a WPA password but wouldn't accept the current password. I then tried to set up Time Capsule in the Time Machine dialog box, but it invoked the airport utility which says it can't find any Apple wireless devices. My Time Machine is now blinking amber at me, and I have tried unplugging, resetting, etc. I am on the internet via hardwire Ethernet connect through the Time Machine to the modem, but cannot get Time Machine to show green and cannot see any wireless devices in airport utility. Any suggestions, please?

set the TC to N+B/G do that using airport Utility. once done power off modem and the router. power on modem first then the router.
