Device malfunctioned

When I plug my iPod Nano 3rd generation into my computer it says; "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it.
Also the screen it black and restarting it doesn't work.
When I turn on iTunes nothing happens but when I manualy restart the iPod, a device pops up just saying serial number and that I need to restore iPod, when I do this nothing happens.
Is the iPod just broken or what?

Any ideas anyone?

  • IPod Touch 2G 8GB wont turn on or connect to computer. Device Malfunctioned

My iPod Touch 2G 8GB will not turn on or connect to my (or any other) computer or accesory. I'm not sure but I believe my USB cord may have been damp from a recent flood.
When I plug it into a Vista computer, a popup reads "One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it"
Do you have any idea what might have happened? I'm not positive the cord was damp, but if it was, does anyone know what it could have done to my ipod and is it salvageable?
I tried the standard home/power reset and tried plugging it into various accessories (car stereo, alarm clock dock) but nothing worked. THe screen is just black and hasnt changed at all.
If anyone can offer any input, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks

  • Ipod Nano 7th Generation - Not Charging / Error Msg From Comp 'Attached Device Malfunctioned'

My IPod Nano 7th gen arrived last night.  I was able to turn it on and select language 'english'  When I connected it to my computer it did not recognize my iPod, so it also did not show up in iTunes,  Error message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned.  and Windows does not recognize it."
My Nano turned off and went blank.   I have tried to reset it.  Nothing works, just blank.
No charge icon, I have tried all USB ports on my comp, but nothing works- (but my USB ports work fine)  I have read that if my iPod has not been charged fully, the computer my not recognize it.
I am now using an adapter and trying to charge it thru the wall power socket.  It has been connected for half an hour.  Still cannot turn iPod on.
I have Windows 7 running on comp.  Itunes is current version 10.7.  I have rebooted my comp several times and re-installed iTunes.
I have an iPhone and an iPod shuffle that are both synced with iTunes on this comp, they work fine.
Is my iPod broken?  Do I send it back?  Anyone else having the same problems?  Please Help !!

I had this problem as well.  I have a PC running Windows 7. I have installed the latest iTunes 10.7 software (64 bit). I reset the nano by holding down the start and home button for 10 seconds.  Then - I plugged it into a PC running Windows XP and was able to format the iPod. Ejected it and plugged it into my Windows 7 computer and then the computer recognized it and I was able to load it. There is some problem with iTunes 7 on Windows 7.

  • Frozen appple on LCD and not recognized by windows (Device Malfunction)

All songs totally erased from my Ipod a few weeks back. When I tried to syncronize my computer now says that the device is malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. Now the Ipod has a frozen apple on the LCD that I cannot turn off or anything.

The usual things to try here would be to reset the iPod and restore the iPod.
There are troubleshooting steps listed here.

My iPod touch 4th Generation charges when connected to aan external dock, but will not connect to my brand new Laptop, my wall connector, or any other device I have tried it on. When I connect it to the laptop, I get an error message: USB Device not recognised - 'The llast USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it'.
I've gone through all the recommended ports of call, tried changing alll of the settings, but nothing works!
    HELP!!

    Did you do:
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
Next since the laptop sees the iphone
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Backup the iPod to iCloud

  • HELP - USB device Malfuncti

I have WinXP Home edition and was using my Zen V Plus for a few months, synching with WMP. Then I reinstalled windows (it is a legal copy) and since then have not been able to do anything more than charge my player when it is connected via USB.
I get an error message saying the device has malfunctioned. I can uninstall the device, but then I guess Windows installs whatever it wants and I get the same message again.
I have installed all the Creative software and nothing has changed. I tried to download firmware but the install was cut short, saying the device was not connected.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks!

I'm just starting with the basics here:
Have you tried restarting your computer, then connecting your iPod again?
If that doesn't do anything, have you tried all of the Five R's?
    The Five R's
If those steps don't help have you tried using a different USB cord for your iPod? (maybe borrow a cord from a friend who has an iPod with a USB cord, if that's possible).

  • Computer says usb device malfunction

I have a new 16 gb ipod touch bought today ,tried to connect to computer via usb .but computer says device has malfunctioned and computer not recognize it i have tried to restore the ipod and also reinstalled itunes .also checked and restarted AMDS ,HELP what is going on Please

Try this. With your iPod plugged into the usb go to device manager and see if you see a yellow question mark next to and unknown usb device. If you do right click and choose to uninstall the device. Then unplug your iPod and reboot your computer and plug back in your iPod. This is assuming you have Windows. Hope this helps.

  • 'USB Device Malfunction'

I had about two weeks of happy Ipod. I connected my 30gb G5 Ipod, and my Nano. They worked great for two weeks or so. Now when I connect either one Windows does not recognize the devices, and will say they have malfunctioned. I tried many different ports and now my Nano is dead. The computer will recharg the nano until you can see the actual menu, then windows says it malfunctioned. I tried to reset my ipods, nothing. Reinstalling all the programs on my computer, and nothing. Please assist on this subject. I do not assume it is the cord because it worked for two weeks and both cords give same result. I also do not think it is the Ipod, because neither will work. However, anything is possible and am open to more troubleshooting.
Thank you very much for reading.

  • USB device malfunctioning!

    Hi,
When I connect my ipod to my computer the follwing message comes up-
"USB device not recognized- One of the USB devices attatched to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it."
I've tried everything I can think of... downloading the latest software updates and the latest versions of itunes etc but still no progress.
When I attempt to configure the ipod using the software supplied with it or one of the software updates issued on the site the ipod and computer both freeze and nothing happens.
The Ipod also appears as an external drive in my computer.
    Has anyone got any suggestions!?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks, James

    Most likely cause: Bad cable.
Second most likely cause: Broken Windows USB drivers.
Third most likely cause: Bad computer hardware.
Not a possible cause: iTunes or any iPod software. Doesn't work that way.

  • Pls Help "Windows USB Device Malfunction" for 2nd Gen nano

Desparately hoping for some assistance here...
I got a used 2nd generation nano that charges properly and plays the songs that are already on it. When I try to hook it up to the computer I get a +USB Device not recognized message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it"+
I am getting this same msg on an older PC running Windows XP and all the latest Service packs and I'm getting the same message on a newer PC with Vista.
Both computers recognize my 3rd generation nano and ipod mini.
I tried the 5Rs. I did the Windows update and downloaded the latest itunes.
I also tried various combinations of resetting (menu + select) while I was attaching the ipod to the computer. I've tried several different USB cables, but I know the cables and the USB ports are fine because the other ipods work with them and this ipod does charge when connected to the PC.
Based on some of the other postings I tried opening the Device Manager and the ipod shows up under USB controllers as "Unknown Device." Windows obviously can't find the driver for it in order to update.
Does anyone have any ideas here? Is there a way I can manually update the driver file?
    thank you!

Okay, this is exactly what the popup says:
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
My friend who has an older ipod says unplugging and plugging it in so much is going to kill the battery. Someone please help! I went to exchange it at an apple store yesterday and the guy said I should try it on the computer again.

  • Presario V5094EA, usb device malfunctioned, unknown usb device

product: presario V5094EA running win XP,
hi am having a roblem with the usb ports on my laptop they were working fine up untill two weeks ago when they just decided to stop working,
now every time i plug something in they first find new hardware then it reports back a device has malfunctioned, unknown usb device, whether its a memory stick or my usb modem
i have formatted the hard drive reinstalled all the drivers from the recovery discs,
i even tried the information in an earlier post about disconnecting the battery for a period which i did for half an hour, but got the same response when i connected it all back up.
am beginning to think this could be hardware related does any one have any ideas before i go buy a new motherboard,
the laptop is about 6 years old now so well out of warranty,
    thanks in advance
    alan

It should do a progress reading with percentages. If it ran all the way through and did not say anything was corrupt then I am afraid you have a hardware issue going.
