"Device not recognised by the computer"

Hi,
I have an ipod 30 GB with Video. When I connect it to USB 2.0 of my computer I get a message "Windows cannot rcognise the device.
My Ipod screen shows "Do not Disconnect", the time shown on the screen is frozen. I tried charging it using an adaptor charger but my ipod screen is frozen.
I cannot scitch it on to listen to music too. It is completely frozen. Please help ???? .

Hopefully this isn't the problem, but I got similar indications when I tried to use a 3rd party dock. I'd get the "Device not recognized by the computer" message and the iPod screen went to the "do not disconnect" display. It actually fried the USB port on my computer so that the PC detected things connecting but couldn't communicate properly.
In my case the iPod thankfully survived and once unplugged was back to normal and the rest of the PC besides that USB port was ok but nothing plugged into that port behaves now.
Used any 3rd party accessories to connect the iPod lately?
In my case after the problems I examined the dock and discovered that the pins in the connector were actually in the wrong positions (!!!), I'm lucky I only frid a $30 part.
(in case you're wondering the dock brand name was XtatiK)
