Device not recognized in iTunes, freezes program when connected, no sync

Problem: iPod is not shown as a device in iTunes, but is shown as a drive on the computer...when connected it shows "connected, eject to disconnect" but it stays there indefinitely and I give up after 5 minutes...sometimes I get the "scan and fix" suggestion but it can't do it because it is in use...if I just disconnect it iTunes then tells me it can't sync because it doesn't have the related file...will sync just fine to the iPhone 3GS
My iPod hasn't been synced very often but I always make sure I have the latest iTunes software version. A few months ago I got an iPhone 3GS as well, and the problems seemed to start at that point. I want the songs to be on the iPod, not the phone, however, sometimes I download songs on the phone and need to transfer them into my iTunes library. I know I can have the songs on the phone but I don't necessarily want them there, although I just totally gave up and synced them to the phone tonight so I have something to listen to at work.
So, I plug in the phone and sync it, then transfer the songs, move them to the playlist I want them in, then disconnect the phone. No problem there. Then I decide I want to sync the revised playlist onto the iPod. When I plug in the iPod, it simply displays "connected" and "eject before disconnecting." It will stay that way indefinitely until I just unplug it. Once in a while it will show "synchronizing" for a few seconds and then it goes back to "connected." It is at that time it wipes everything off the iPod but does not put anything back on it. During this time I cannot operate at ALL in iTunes - I can't click anywhere or select anything. It's totally stuck until I unplug the iPod. The device is not displayed at all in iTunes (devices isn't even shown as an option), but it is shown as a drive on my computer. Often iTunes will suggest I scan and fix the disk, which I select to do, except then it tells me it can't do it when the disk is in use. I have tried shutting everything down and rebooting. I think at some point tonight I was able to scan and fix.
I have tried all the Rs up to restore. I can't do that because I can't get iTunes to recognize the iPod is there. I have: 1) updated Windows 2) uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes; 3) moved the hold switch and pressed the center and menu buttons at the same time, 4) moved it to a different USB port. In January I went through the whole rigamarole of restoring the iPod to factory settings, although I don't even know how I did that now.
This is extremely frustrating because every time I want to update the songs on the iPod it is a 3 - 4 hour process, for something that should take 10 minutes.
Is anyone else having these types of issues? I have a feeling it relates to having both products linked to the software, although it really shouldn't be a problem.

I am having the same problem but my son's Ipod 3rd gen was stolen and it has been returned to us. Of course everything has been erased. I am having the same problems and have tried all of the same things but cannot do that reset to factory part because it isn't being recognized in the Itunes and it is not synching. Could someone please let us know what to do

  • IOS5 Update causes Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
I did an iPad1 IOS5 update and on the reboot could not get iTunes to recognize my iPad.
I did all the recommended troubleshooting to no avail. So I called this morning and while on hold I put my password back on my device just as before and BAM iTunes now recognizes device and is doing my restore.
So if you do a backup of your device before the update and you have it password protected, it won't recognize the device until you go through and setup a new device and put your password back to what is was before, then BAM you're good! Good Luck and hopefully you won't have to spend the day I did figuring this out.

I've tried using all troubleshooting advice, I've tried using all USB connections on my computer, I've continually uninstalled itunes and reinstalled the current itunes, I've checked all firewalls, all security settings, and my anti virus protection, and authorized my computer for itune use. Hello rebakahloper,
It sounds like you are getting a messages saying your device could not be recongized correctly. You've done a great amount of troubleshooting, and I dont know if you have done these steps specifically, but I recommend the following troubleshooting:
iPod nano: Error message saying that iPod 'could not be identified properly'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3218
Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
iPod nano requires Apple Mobile Device Support, which should be automatically installed with iTunes. To verify whether it is installed, follow the steps appropriate for your Windows operating system below.
Windows XP: Click Start and select Control Panel. Open the Add or Remove Programs control panel and verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is visible in the list of currently installed programs.
Windows Vista and Windows 7: Click Start and select Control Panel. Click Uninstall a program (or if using Windows Vista's Classic View of the Control Panel, click Programs and Features) and verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is visible in the list of currently installed programs.
If Apple Mobile Device Support is not listed, remove iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, and Apple Application Support, and then reinstall iTunes. Follow the steps appropriate for your Windows operating system below.
    Reinstall iTunes for Windows XP
Reinstall iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7
If Apple Mobile Device Support is still not installed, follow the steps in this article.
    Verify the device's USB connection
Disconnect all USB devices from the system with the exception of the iPod nano and any USB keyboard and mouse. Then restart your computer.
Verify that you are using a high-powered USB 2.0 port. Do not use a USB hub to connect your iPod.Determine whether your computer has USB 2.0.
Test with an alternate iPod USB cable if one is available. Remove any USB extension cables, and verify that the iPod USB cable is connected directly to the computer.
Verify that the Apple Mobile Device Service and iPod service are both running
iPod nano (5th and 6th generation) require both the Apple Mobile Device Service and iPod service.
Refer to this article to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service.
Next, refer to this article in the section titled "Restart the iPod Service".
Verify that the Apple Mobile Device Driver is installed
iPod nano (5th and 6th generation) requires the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver (usbaapl.inf or usbaapl64.inf for 64-bit). In some cases, you may need to update or reinstall this driver. Follow this article, in the section titled "Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed".If the issue remains, repeat this step in safe mode. To start your computer in safe mode, see the appropriate Microsoft article below, depending on which version of Windows you have:
    Safe mode for Windows XP
    Safe mode for Windows Vista
    Safe mode for Windows 7
Once in safe mode, repeat the steps in this article in the section titled "Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed." Once complete, restart your computer as usual to get out of safe mode.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • IOS: Device not recognized in iTunes via wifi

After updating my iphone 5 to ios 7.1, my device is not recognized in itunes for mac... obviously I have updated itunes too but the device still is not seen by itunes. I've tried to reboot both iphone and mac.. but still does not work... any tips?

Have you tried to give your iPod  a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and try again.
Have you tried different USB ports? Rebooted your computer?
Uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes? (You won't lose content if you uninstall)
