"Device removal" warning following attaching iPod to iMac

I have started having problems whenever I attach my iPod or camera to my iMac. Shortly after making the connection (USB), a warning appears stating that I have removed a device improperly ie without hitting the eject key or other step. This happens before the computer even begins to connect to the device to begin a synchronization or to download photos. The connector cables are different, yet the same message appears and now I am unable to update the iPod or download photos to iPhoto.
Help?

If the battery on the iPod was near dead, it may have had enough charge to boot the iPod for a second or two, bringing up iTunes and starting a sync attempt. When the battery ran out of power from this attempt, the iPod will shut itself off, causing the improperly removed device warning. Since you left it plugged in, the battery continued to charge. Eventually, it had enough charge to operate. Now, my guess as to why it started playing is that somehow the controls were touched (got a cat?).
The proper way to charge the battery is to plug it into your computer, allow a sync, and then leave the iPod connected until the iPod screen says it is fully charged.

  • Won't show CF card, yet it gives me device removal warning when I pull it.

This happens occasionally and I don't know why. I put in a disc and it does not show in the finder under devices or anywhere else I can find. I pull the disc, and it gives the the device removal warning. It it's reading it, then where the heck am I supposed to find it?? Thanks.

A multi card reader that has always worked in the past (almost always). Plugged the same reader into my Macbook and worked just fine. Tried it directs as well as through hub.

  • "Device Removal" warning when trying to mount 2 Ext HDs

I'm trying to copy some files from one external HD to another. When I connect these to my G5 and power up, one of them will mount and then the second one knocks the other other one off the desktop and I get the "Device Removal" warning. It happens regardless of which order I do this. HD 1 is about 3 years old, HD 2 is about 1 month old. I've tried disconnecting them both and reconnecting them, I've switched firewire cables and ports. They are both Western Digital firewire 7200 rpm. This has happened before with other ext HDs that I use. Some of them can all be connected to the G5 without any problems at times. There have been a couple of power failures due to some stormy weather lately but I disconnected everything from the power strip prior to bad weather. Don't know if this has any bearing on the problem, just thought I'd mention it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Steve L.

Hello! Try them separately on one of the motherboard ports. Were they daisy chained together? This sometimes causes problems. Also when you connect them one at a time to different ports listed the them as they spin up as weak (or failing) power supplies on some externals have caused porblems. Tom

  • Continuous USB Device Removal Messages on certain Flash Sticks since 10.5.2

I have run into a problem with both my MacBook Air and Mac Pro since running 10.5.2, and this was not fixed in 10.5.3:
Most Flashsticks appear to be continuously removed and replugged over 5 sec intervals. I continuously get the "Device Removal Warning." These worked before, and do not have the problem running under BootCamp on the same machine, or being assigned to VMWare. An example is an Emprex 4GB stick, which was not cheap, when bought. They also do not have issues on Dells, or Macs running tiger!
These are plugged directly into the system, no hubs or cables in between.
There are other brands that do not have the issue.
Has anybody run into this? This is very annoying.

I'm seeing that issue with an Adata 8GB stick (www.adata.com.tw).
That same stick works fine on my MacMini (ppc), Dell 700m, and Lenovo T60p.
In all cases, I'm always connecting the stick directly to the systems.
The failure happens at various times after insertion. Sometimes Finder doesn't event display the contents, sometimes I'm able to copy 20MB before the copy hangs. In all cases (dozen times) on the MacBook Air, it never worked reliably.
The MacBook Air USB port is not (completely?) busted, as it works fine with my Maxtor OneTouch USB2.0 external disk.

  • How to deactivate "Device Removal" dialogs

My team is developing a Java application that will run full screen and interface with a USB hard drive.
I would like to figure out how to deactivate the "Device Removal" warning dialog when the USB drive is unplugged without ejecting it properly.
An alternative would be to understand how to capture that event and display our own dialog.
    Thanks.

First of all, that warning is a good thing. You don't want to eject mounted drives without unmounting them first.
Second of all, there is no way you'll do this that in Java. It might be possible using C++ and Apple's I/O Kit. It kind of defeats the purpose to write a Java program that needs a kernel extension.

  • Turning off Device Removal Warnings

I recently purchased a 320GB Simple Drive (External Hard Drive) to back up my computer. The device turns on when it is plugged into both an electrical outlet and my computer (USB). When I close my laptop at night, it enters sleep mode, cutting power to its USB connections. The external hard drive, not sensing the USB connection any longer, powers down. However, my computer reads this power-off as a device removal, and gives me an "improper device removal" warning when I wake it in the morning (or any other time I close and open the lid). This is obviously a major, major annoyance.
Is there some way to suppress/turn off these warnings? If not, is there another solution that will make the computer not bug me about improper removal?

Three solutions: 1) return the bus powered drive and buy a drive with its own power supply. 2) buy a powered USB hub and plug the drive into it. The hub will continue to power the drive after the computer sleeps. 3) disconnect the drive before sleeping the computer.
I vote for option 1 - frankly, bus powered drives are okay for notebook users who need extra capacity on the road and convenient for tech workers who often need to use a hard drive but find it inconvenient to locate a power source, but for regular use they aren't a good idea.

  • On my registered iTunes computer, the following message appears every time one plugs in a device and refuses to load said device to be synced: "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". They are all registered. Help

On my registered iTunes computer, the following message appears every time one plugs in a device and refuses to load said device to be synced: "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". Each device has been registered onto this account and this computer, and all have worked finely in the past. I am so confused as to why now seemingly without reason, none of our apple devices (one iPod, two iPhones) are allowed to have music and other material downloaded onto them. Also, as a side note, they still are charged by plugging them into the computer, however they do not even show up on the left-hand sidebar in iTunes.
It should also be noted that for my iPhone it does not allow for the new update software to be uploaded; it just says that an error has occurred, nothing more.

  • How can I remove a device from my network, an iPod

how do I remove a device that is signed into my network?  I want to remove my child's iPod when I'm not home so they don't have free access to the internet through it.

Many newer wireless routers can create more than one network simultanesouly. If I wanted to do this, I'd set up a separate network for my child to use, then change the password during those times I wanted him to stay off the net. Or just pull the plug and keep the wireless transmitted (the plug) where he couldn't reach it.
If you're using a recent Airport Base Station or Time Capsule there are better options.

I've updated iTunes to version 11.0.0.163 and have an iPod Nano 16gb 5th generation.

  • Time Machine for multiple macs - NAS or DAS attached to my iMac, which I then share?

    Greetings
I currently have three macs - MBA, MBP and an iMac (newest generation). I'd like to use Time Machine for all of them.
Is it better to set up a NAS for Time Machine or can I use DAS that I woudl share (external HDD) attached to my iMac if they are all on the same network?
Also, is there any need for something like a Drobo or an external RAID array, if it's mostly for backing up and not for video editing? It would be used as a mnusic server to some degree. I've used a Drobo in the past (2nd gen) and find that I've spent a lot of time troubleshooting and fiddling with it over the years.

  • Bogus "Device Removal" Alert for SDcard Reader

Using the same SDcards, same reader, same USB hub as I did before the 10.5.8 update, I now get a "Device Removal" alert after a period of time once an SDcard is inserted. It varies from just a minute or two to around an hour or more. When I click off the alert window the card remounts right away but the alert always comes back after a while.
Something tells me a PRAM zap might fix it, but is anyone else seeing this with 10.5.8?

More Info: After resetting PRAM and a reboot, still the same symptoms except this time, after the "Device Removal" message came up. the lights on the reader flashed for a while and then the following alert window appeared: "Disk Repair The disk "NO NAME" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible." Never saw that one before. This alert finally went away by itself, another "Device Removal" alert appeared, and now it's continually mounting the card then showing the removal alert, every few minutes.
