Device shows up on System Profiler but not Disk Utility or Finder

I have a Samsung P3 which up until now has worked perfectly; I plug it in, move files onto it, and then eject it.
But a few days ago I was charging it on the mac and in the morning unplugged it in a hurry without ejecting. I don't know but this might be the cause of the problem.
Basically I can't find the P3. The device itself says that it is connected, and it registers on System Profiler, but it is not on Finder or Disk Utility, and I can't move anything onto it or get to it at all.
How do I solve this?
I don't really want to download any software if that's ok.
Thank you!

NO such thing as a Buffalo HD, contains a Seagate HD inside the box.
verify on another Mac if same, likely this very common issue, read about same here:

  • IPod shows up in system profiler but not in /dev and disk utility

    Hi,
I have a Problem with my iPod. It works perfectly when I connect it to other macs.
Though on my mac it appears only in the system profiler, but not in itunes, /dev or diskutilities. Other USB devices are working correctly.
I already reseted my ipod but this doesn't solve the problem. Neither did the update of the iPod firmware.
Does somebody know this Problem? What can I try to solve it?
    Thanks.
    About my iPod:
It's an iPod Touch, system Profiler is telling:
    Version:          0.01
      Bus Power (mA):          500
      Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
      Manufacturer:          Apple Inc.
      Product ID:          0x1293
      Serial Number:
Vendor ID:          0x05ac  (Apple Computer, Inc.)
    iTunes says:
    serial number: 910952nua75j
    Running the system 4.2.1
    About my Mac:
    It's a MacBook Pro, 2,16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.11

I'm pretty upset. It seems that the only solution to this problem is to buy some new mac products!
I have Applications on my computer that will not work on a new system and I don't want to update my system + all expensive apps just because my ipod refuse to downgrade.
I used to be a mac fan and I still like it, but this kind of "tricks" are unacceptable. I bought an ipod because I didn't want to spend time on fixing some stupid problems and now I already spent weeks trying to make my expensive ipod work on my mac (and all this because of a stupid firmware problem). I am now really disapointed.
So if anyone should have an idea on if it's possible to downgrade my ipod (or other solution?) in order to make it work again with my system, please post it here. Thanks.

  • Hard Drive Shows Up In System Profile, But Not On Desktop

I took the old hard drive out of my intel mac mini (60gb fuji) and installed it on my power mac g5 (1.8 single); it worked long enough for me to copy all my old files over before it randomly froze and i had to restart. after that the new drive only shows up in the system profiler and not on the desktop. in the system profiler it states its capacity but not how much is available, like the main drive. any ideas on how to get the old drive working again?

    figured it out, thanks!

  • USB drives show up on list in System Profiler, but not on desktop

Hi, I have a 2.0 USB hub with 2 external USB drives attached, and sometimes they show up on the desktop, sometimes they don"t. When they don't, I can find them in the System Profiler under USB, and when I click refresh, they still show up in the list but don't show up on the desk top, or in the device utility either. Is there some way to get them to "re-appear" on the desk top? I too only have 1 USB port that will run them, but this doesn't make them show up on the DT. Anyone have an idea of what to do?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, no they don't. If I connect them one at a time, they are fine. Sometimes I can get them to show up, and they stay on the desktop until , for some reason, they disappear and I get a dialog that says this drive was not put away properly . . .. I put the computer to sleep, I unplug the hub, start up the computer, plug in the hub again, but can't find a consistent way to get them to show up!

  • Firewire Drive in System Profiler But Not In Finder?

I have a 2.3 MBP with a Seagate FreeAgent 1 TB drive attached via FW 400.
Just yesterday, it wont show up in the finder, but does in Apple System Profiler. This drive is full of iMovie Events I'd hate to lose.
Is there a way using Unix to try to mount it? Any suggestions will be welcomed.
    Tom

After unplugging power and firewire from the device try refreshing System Profiler. Refresh in System Profiler can be found under View OR Command R will do it. I use this all the time when I loose either USB or Firewire Connections and nothing else, such as unplugging, doesn't work.

  • Connecting External Hard Drive to Time Capsule - In Finder but not Disk Utility

    Hi,
So I've got a bit of a problem.  I have connected my LaCie 2d Quadra External Hard Drive into my Time Capsule via USB for the simple purpose of making it wireless, as well as allowing both my husband and I to access the files on it.  It works flawlessly on my husband's MacBook Pro:  Shows up as an icon on the desktop as well as in Finder and Disk Utility.  However, on mine I can access it via the Time Capsule in Finder (as a shared file), but it does not show up in Disk Utility nor on the Desktop.  I tried installing the LaCie Desktop Manager, but, although it downloaded and installed fine, when I went to open it I received the error:  "No LaCie Desktop Manager Compliant Device Found".  I am assuming that is because it really is only even recognizing it at all in the Finder because it is a shared file, but not actually recognized as a Drive.  And that explains why it is not on the Desktop or Disk Utility.  Annoyingly, I can't drag the shared file onto my desktop either.  Well I can, as an alias, but it says original not found when I try to access it.
Obviously, I would like to access the LaCie drive on my desktop wirelessly as my husband does, the way it does when I plug it in directly.  If I connect it via USB directly into my MacBook, it works fine.  So really it is just a matter of getting it up and running wirelessly, which I know it can do because it is doing it on my husband's.   I am wondering if it is a Lion issue, as I am running Lion and my husband is running Snow Leopard?  But then again...it does work with my Lion if I plug it in directly...sigh...
    Here are our details:
    Me:  2008 MacBook, running Lion
Hubby:  2008 MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard
Any help would be greatly appreciated...I'm bewildered!

On your Lion MacBook, click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen.
Click Finder, then click Finder Preferences, then click the General tab
Under the heading of "Display these items on the desktop" make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to "Connected Servers"
    Close Finder Preferences
Open Macintosh HD or the Finder
Look to see if the Time Capsule icon is displayed under the SHARED heading in the Finder
Click on the Time Capsule icon and folders representing the Time Capsule disk and your Lacie disk should appear to the right
Double click on the Lacie folder to mount the drive on the desktop
You may need to click Connect As at the upper right of the center window if your disk requires a password. Once the password is saved, you should not have to enter the password in the future.

  • How can Time Machine restore older Mac Pro's - But not Disk Utility?

    Hey,
So I had posted a discussion earlier last week asking about older MacPro's (2006 - 2008) versions that do not seem to run snow leopard if you just try to install with the MAC OS X 10.6.2 disc - I was trying to use my new Snow Leopard image that i have created for the new school year, and I tried to image a 2006 MacPro model and a 2008 MacPro model, etc...  This would not work, it would let me start the imaging process and then it would give me an error that looked like this "ev/disk02o does not have enough space"  And i just figured that was the computer code way of telling me that the image i had created was not readable by the computer or the disk utility, but this must be something that was written into the programing of Disk Utility or Snow Leopard because i found a loop hole - I was able to "restore" the backup of the new image that i made using Time Machine on the 2008 MacPro and even the 2006 MacPro - which both have earlier versions of the Intel chip.  The restored image works fine, all programs work the same as a 2009 MacPro that i imaged the same image onto using disk utility and i have found no problems yet using any part of the system.  MY QUESTION:  I'm wondering how i was able to do this and if anyone has had a similar experience trying to get images accross a bunch of different models of MacPro's - Is Time Machine a "better" way to restore the disk image?  Did Apple do this on purpose, so that you cant image newer images onto older machines?  Very confused as to why it makes you use Time Machine...
    Thanks again,
    Kyle R.

You are reading things into that error message that are simply not there.
Take the error message at face value.
When it calculates all the "stuff" it has to get onto your disk to do the installation, it does not fit.  (including the .dmg, the Virtual Disk created to mount the dmg, and all the temporay files that are added before the new version takes over and discards the old stuff)  all that stuff in total does not fit.)
Sure the final image fits, and sure you can restore that final image using other methods: Time machine works, and I'll bet Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper work as well.
Using the method you were using, the sum of all the temp files and all the program files do not fit. It is NOT a conspiracy.

  • LaCie flash drive not recognized as a drive, but shows up in system profiler. Please help!!

I recently got a LaCie RuggedKey 16 gb flash drive. The problem is that recently I plugged in the drive and I can't access the files, however, it shows up in system profiler. There are still files on the drive, and I really need them. Can you please help me recover them?

If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed.

    Hi,
I would try a Safe Boot first.  (This will take longer than a normal Boot and you will need to Restart afterwards).
If it were an older OS I would also suggest going to System Preferences > Displays and making sure the display is set to Millions.  (My MacBook Pro does not have this option in Snow Leopard so I did presume Snow Leopard does not have it).
With some laptops there have been some issues with the cable up the back of the screen pulling loose with regular and frequent use of the lid, but this will not apply to you based on your specs.  (it does take time to appear and is also somewhat rare). However it seems enough contact with the camera can make it appear in System Profiler and power it on but not give a pic.
If a Safe Boot does not work I would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
This is actually "less" destructive in that it clears less memory items than Safe Boot but they are different enough to warrant trying.
Do you have an older version of iGlasses installed ?
The one for Leopard does not work for Snow Leopard.
Do you have  Web Browser open ?
This may point to  Google Video Chat Plug-in and Flash Conflict.  It would be rare to allow another app to access the camera even if not displayiong a Pic.
(Chrome Installs the Plug-in as does the standalone download).
Knowing  what "any application" exactly you are trying might help us pin it down.
Any additional downloaded  apps that can use the camera ?
Do you happen to have something balck in front of the camera ?

  • Serial number not showing up in system profiler

    hi,
i recently had a problem with my speakers in macbook.
i sent it for service and the service center replaced my main board
now the system profiler is not showing my serial number.
do any one know how to fix this problem.

You would need to send it back to have the serial number burned in to the board. This seems to be a common occurrence when the board is replaced. There should be a number you can call on the paperwork from the repair and discuss it with them.

  • New Superdrive doesn't show up in System Profiler

My old superdrive died on me, so I ordered a new one from powerbookmedic.com.
After installing, it doesn't show up in System Profiler. I've quadruple-checked the connection and I can hear it make regular healthy sounds when booting up so I know it's getting power but once I'm inside OSX; nothing.
I tried resetting the PRAM and SCM as recommended on this forum for various superdrive trouble. Although it didn't change anything and I'm guessing don't apply here.
Any tips for getting OSX to recognize my drive?

    It's equipped with a SATA drive - that's why.

  • My ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes 7.

Let me start out by saying I've never had any itunes + ipod probems before. Everything has run smoothly up until now.
Last week I upgraded my OS to 10.4.7 because I had been running on 10.2.8 since 2001 and itunes wouldn't let me download albums containing music videos. So I decided it was time for the upgrade. I also upgraded to itunes 7 and had been previously using itunes 6. This is when the problems started. Now whenever I plug my ipod into my computer with my firewire cord, my ipod shows up on my desktop, but not in itunes and I am completely clueless on what to do. No error messages pop up or anything. My ipod charges and that's about it. I tried doing the 5 R's, but none of that helps. I have a feeling it's itunes's problem and not my ipod's. I was thinking that maybe if I uninstall itunes 7 and re-install 6, everyting would work again; but I don't know how to uninstall itunes and I don't want to risk losing my library. I'd just like for itunes 7 to recognise my ipod and update it. Can anyone help me?

My iPod is a click wheel...I think that's fifth generation?
I've always used my firewire cable to update my iPod. I've tried using USB in the past but for some reason it always says that my iPod has low battery and won't let me update it, so I just use firewire. Can I not use firewire with itunes 7?
I'll try using the USB again. It's laying around here somewhere. Just gotta find it.

i got a new lenovo desktop windows 8.1,installed itunes and synced my iphone 4 no problems. then i imported a cd of songs which showed up in recently added but not in main library ,therefore it did not sync to the iphone. how can i get new songs to appear in the main library and sync properly
    thanks
    john

Check the songs are really not in the Music section of the library by clicking the magnifying glass in the search box and unticking Search Entire Library if it is ticked, then typing in the name of the album. If the tracks still don't show try closing iTunes and deleting a hidden file called sentinel from inside your iTunes folder. This should make iTunes run an integrity check on the database when you start it again. Make sure the tracks are checked before you try syncing again.
