Device won't show up on my desktop

Hi, everyone. I tried connecting my phone and my camera (individually at different times) to my Macbook Pro, but for some reason, neither device shows up on my desktop. I looked at my Finder preferences and "external disks" is checked off to show up on the desktop and on the sidebar. Neither device shows up under disk utility, but both of them show up on system profiler when I tried to connect them at separate times. I checked my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) and it says that it's connected as a media device, and when I connected my camera (Canon Powershot S90), my photos show up on iPhoto so I don't think it's really a problem with the removable devices I'm connecting to the computer. I'm not sure why my computer isn't showing either of these devices on my desktop because I've never had this problem before with either device on this particular computer.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hm...I've had my Canon camera for about 2 or 3 years now and every time I've connected it to my Macbook Pro, a new window pops up and it shows up on my desktop. This is the first time I haven't been able to find it anywhere on my desktop.
Also, I have an Android (not sure if that makes a difference) and again, I've connected it multiple times to this computer and every single time, it shows up on my desktop except this one time.

  • My external hard drive won't show up on the desktop!!

    Alright!
I bought a 250Go external hard disk at the same time as my alumnium iMac around september 2007. Since then I had no problems.
I also created partitions on my hard disk:
1 - Mac = Mac OS extended (Journaled) 202 Go
    2 - PC = MS-DOS (Fat) 30 Go
When I turn on on my hard disk, both icons usually appear on my desktop but since yesterday, ONLY my PC icon appear.
I went in the Disk Utility and it seems that the MAC partition is always here but won't show up on the desktop. It's like it's become invisible or something.
Should I be worried? Because I use the MAC partition to back up all my files with Time Machine.
I find it annoying so anybody can help me out? Thanks!!

Patrick, I have same issue with my (Intel) MacBook's internal HD. Tried your Script solution but recv'd Systems Events ERROR "Can't set disk "MacBook HD" to true".
The (missing) HD is Boot Camp Partitioned and running Fusion. BTW, Fusion/WinXP will no longer open - "File not Found" error. Also, I didn't immediately notice the disappearance because my MacBook started booting from one of ext HD's (w/o me changing the startup drive).
Any ideas greatly appreciated. I haven't tried the Terminal solutions posted since I'm not Terminal savey.

Have a macbook pro running osx lion.  Connected a Kindle Fire using micro usb and the disk icon doesn't show up on the desktop.  Also sometimes get a message sayiing computer doesn't recognize device.  When I opened disk utilities the Kindle disk does show up there.  What am I missing?

Precisely why it's not an iPad, and why it doesn't cost very much.  An Apple rep would tell you how to connect an iPad to every computer.

  • Snow Leopard won't Show up on the Desktop

I've an Intel Core Duo machine with 2 GB of memory
and enough free space on my drive but can't get Snow Leopard to show up on my Desktop.
Apple sent me 2 replacement discs to make sure the problem isn't the disc itself.
    The CD drive works fine
At the moment I'm running OS 10.5.8
CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE ?

It does sound likely that the drive has failed, yes. You'll need to contact an Apple Store or authorized service center and ask what it would cost to confirm the diagnosis and replace the drive. It's possible for a user to replace the drive oneself, but the iMac is not designed for user service and can be a bit tricky (more so for some models that for others). If you want to look into it, though, you can find guides for doing so here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel
You could also look into an external drive. Some at least can be booted from, though I don't know if all can. Someone else here may be able to recommend a specific unit, or you can ask Other World Computing; they're pretty knowledgable about such things and I'd trust what they told me:

  • No Devices Icons are showing in Finder or Desktop

I recently turned off the desktop icons by clicking the desktop and selecting 'Preferences...' from the Finder menu and then deselecting the available items.
    See: http://www.cameroncooke.com/wp-images/FinderOptions.png
But now I want to turn them back on again and I have ticked all the options and they just wont re appear on the desktop. The also don't appear in the Finder anymore under 'Devices' category.
    Please help.

I resolved the issue in the end.
From some strange reason the HDD icon had it Visibility flag se to true. This is an hidden
attribute on all file that basically hides that file from showing in the Finder/Desktop.
I used a program called SuperGetInfo (http://www.barebones.com/products/super/) while lets you
view hidden files and unhide them.
I have no idea how the hard drive came to having it's visibility set to false in the first place, probably a Leopard bug.

  • Some devices won't show up in iTunes device list

I have iTunes 11.1.4.62. I can sync some devices just fine (nan gen2, iPod Classic), as they show up on device list within iTunes when connected via USB. The PROBLEM is with other devices (iPhone 5, Nano 5th gen, iPad 4th gen) that do not show up on device list when THEY are plugged in via USB.
Have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes. Verified that all Apple Service (helper, etc.) are running. Any ideas as to why some of my deives would stopp showing up on device list (they did until the most recent iTune Update).

Here you go...try the fix in this thread...

  • Premier Pro won't show up on PC desktop manager

I have a creative cloud membership and use it on my desktop PC and on my Mac laptop.  I have already installed Premier Pro on the Mac, but when I went to install it on my PC today premier pro will not show up in my creative cloud desktop manager on my PC.  When I try to download PP from the Adobe site, it brings up my PC desktop manager and nothing happens.  But PP still shows up on my Mac's desktop manager and is still installed and working on the Mac.  Am I missing something?

Premiere Pro is 64 bit only. So are other video apps such as After Effects.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html#desktop-products
Which desktop applications in Creative Cloud require 64-bit operating systems?
With the new CC apps, most of the pro video and audio applications now require 64-bit operating systems to run. These native 64-bit applications include Adobe Premiere® Pro CC, Adobe Audition® CC, After Effects® CC, Prelude® CC, and SpeedGrade® CC. Flash Professional CC, Photoshop CC and Lightroom® also require 64-bit on Mac OS.
Your Mac is probably a 64 bit system. I suspect your PC is 32 bit.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-windows-frequently-asked-que stions
If your hardware/operating system does not meet the system requirements for the software then the software will not be available for download on that computer.

  • Network Manager applet won't show up on my desktop

I use wifi-menu to connect to wifi, even if I'd like to use NetworkManager since I used it in debian. Anyways, I have NetworkManager installed, and xfce tells me it's in the systray except it's not. This is a pretty huge problem for me, especially because my wifi drivers tend to disconnect and wifi-menu doesn't help that much when I have an internet that doesn't work. In Debian, if my drivers disconnected all I'd have to do is reconnect from NetworkManager and they'd magically work again.

waddicto wrote:However, I have a different problem now, I have two network applets in my systray.
The network-manager-applet package installs the startup file: /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop
Are you starting up another nm-applet somewhere else?

  • My new ipod device won't show up when opening itunes

I just received a refurbished iPod due to a defective one under warranty, but the device will not appear when I go to iTunes. My Mac has only version 10.4.11, and does not offer any software updates. How can I get my previously purchased apps and music in itunes to download to my new device if my new device does not appear??

    - To sync with your computer you need to update the operating system on your computer to at least OSX 10.5.8. That is a paid update.
    - You can redownload you apps (and your music if you are in a country with iCloud) by the following directly on your iPod assuming that the iPod has iOS 4.3.3 or later.

  • Local printers won't show up in Remote Desktop Connection Manager 2.7

    Hi everybody
I really need help. I connect to a server through RDC Man 2.7 on my Surface Pro 3 to use the installed accounting software. Now I want to print stuf such as journals but when I print, I cannot choose my locally installed wirless Printer. I used to be able
to do it using RDC Man on my iMac in OSX.
I have ticked printers on the local resources tab in settings to no avail. I hope somebody can help me with this issue as I really need to be able to print.
    Thanks a million.
    Best regards
    Ben

    Hello Ben,
Do you mean that the Surface Pro 3 can’t find the local wireless printer when you remote desktop to a server? And when you remote from a iMac at the same time, the Surface Pro 3 can find the printer?
Can the surface pro 3 printer when it is not connected with the remote server?
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Check if you can normally ping the IP address of the printer when you can’t printer.
About the command ping, please take a look at the following article.
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490968.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    2. Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories
    and run printer troubleshooter
    3. Please try to update the driver from the manufacturer website and check if the issue still exists

  • 30G video iPod won't show on desktop or in iTunes

    Powerbook G4, 10.4.8, iTunes 7.0.1
30G Video iPod, connected by USB cable -- oh so frustrated! Big trip coming up and can't put any of my audible books on my iPod!
This seems to have started after I upgraded iTunes to 7.0, is this source of my problem?
Suddenly I plugged in my iPod and it won't show up on the desktop, iTunes or Disk Utility
    Things I've tried:
Reset iPod, (can't restore the iPod, since no application or utility will recognize it), did all upgrades to iTunes, unplugged all usb ports, repaired all permissions, tried plugging it into another Mac G5 and it wouldn't show up there either.
It plugs into my power source from the electrical outlet and is fully charged, and plugs into my car radio via a monster cable just fine, just won't connect to a computer.
Please, I'll try anything. Thanks so much for your help.

    Try this site.

It's probably too late for your trip but if you're still having the problem try it.

  • Why won't my external drives show up on my desktop?

i have tried going to the disk utilities and remounting my external drives and checked for an option in system prefs, but my external drives (both flash drive and hard drive) just won't show up on my desktop. My computer isn't even a week old!

Go to Finder Preferences (Preferences in the Finder menu).
On the General tab, make sure the items you want shown are checkmarked.
Ditto on the Sidebar tab, for items you want shown in the Sidebar of Finder (folder) windows.

  • Won't show up on mac and say "do not disconnect"

Hi, I've had my 60 GB iPod for about a year now and suddenly now it won't show up on my desktop when I plug it in. The iPod screen says "do not disconnect" though, and after I just pull it out the message doesn't go away and I have to wait for the power to die before I can use it again. Is it starting to break down?

Homer...this very same thing has happened to me today. Have you found a solution yet?

  • HELP. External hard drive suddenly won't show up on Mac.

So, I left for a few minutes and when I got back, there was that warning on my screen that said the disc wasn't ejected properly, etc. Which was weird because the drive was still plugged in fine. Anyway, when this happens, I usually just pull the hard drive out then plug it back in and it works fine but now it won't show up on the desktop or on the disk utility I got it to show up on disk utility once, but the subheading under the hard drive was greyed out. I could click it but when I tried to run Verify or Repair, nothing would happen. It would show up on the history as "repaired disc" but NOTHING. And I am honestly freaking out Please help, anyone

I'd have to agree with WZZZ. That sounds like either a bad connection, bad cable, or faulty supply. The port could be bad as well but the cable either being bad or not properly plugged in or maybe even worn out. When the "disk ejected" message shows up it's usually because somehow the cable was yanked out of the system while it was plugged in. Intermittenet connections in the cable, particularly in supply lines between the drive and the unit can cause this to happen as well...it's as if you unplugged the external hard drive from the system for a very short time, but the system still picks it up and sees it as bad.

  • Card Reader won't Show Up!!!

HELP!?! All of a sudden my SanDisk Imagemate won't show up on my desktop when I insert my compact flash card. Usually it pops up on my desktop and iPhoto also opens but today.... nothing. I've even tried restarting because that usually solves the problem. Any ideas or suggestions? I haven't done anything new or different.
It worked fine last week, I downloaded over 400 pics.
(It does show up as connected when I check "about this computer")
    17 iMac FP 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iPhoto 5.04

I wish I could help you but I'm having the same problem myself.
See my post on Dec. 30: Compact flash disk won't work after upgrade to 5.0.4
I can't see any of the files on two of my compact flash disks. I did plug the disks into an underpowered USB hub and thought that might be the problem. Did you do anything like that? Check out: http://resale.headgap.com/bobsmactips.html.
I have a Canon EOS 20D. I found out on the Canon web site that there is a firmware update that addresses communication problmes with compact flash cards. However, they want me to copy the update to the disk and then onto the camera. But, until I see the disk in my Mac, I can't copy the firmware update.
Any clues would be a big help.
