Devices problem

I have 2 ipods - a classic and a nano. The classic shows up in devices, but when i plug in the nano, i am unable to sync - the only option is to transfer purchases from named nano. I would like to add more albums to my nano so am asking for help on how to get my itunes to bring it up as a choise in devices for syncing. Can anyone help please? I have tried resetting the shuffle. Thanks

Sounds like the device may have had a hardware failure. If it is out of warranty, the only option is the Out of Warranty replacement.
AppleCare is only an option if it is still under the original warranty.

Work-around to "unknown device" problem

I found a work-around to the "unknown device" problem, a pain to do, but much less painful than any alternatives I've found so far.
In my case, I can connect my Ipod one time. After I eject it, if I reconnect, I get the Unknown Device error. That's where this work-around comes in.
There is an INF file (a Windows hardware configuration file) in the Windows\INF directory that has a name that will be specific to your computer. Once you determine that file, you need to re-install it. Re-installing it allows the Ipod to be recognized the next time it is connected. These are the steps:
1) Determine the file name on your computer. You only need to do this one time, and then remember the name. Using Regedit, navigate to HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-44455354 0000}. Then do an Edit / Find for "ipod" without the quotes, making sure that "Data" is checked and "Match whole string only" is not checked. It should find "Apple iPod USB Driver" in the "DriverDesc" value in one of the sub-keys. There will be another value called "InfPath". The data for that is the file name for the INF file on your computer. On my computer it is oem51.inf. It will be something like that on yours.
2) In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Windows\Inf and find that file. In addition to "oem??.inf", there will be an "oem??.pnf" (same numbers), which is a binary version of the .inf file. Delete that file, or rename it if you prefer. If it exists, step 3 will not work.
3) Right click on the .inf file and select Install. The computer will chug for a few seconds. The .pnf file should reappear and, more importantly, your iPod should now be able to connect one time. At least it does for me.
I hope that Apple puts out a fix for this problem sometime soon. Meanwhile, doing steps 2 and 3 every time I want to connect is annoying, but bearable.

I would like to apologize for posting this message. I promise that it did work and did seem to be the solution at the time I posted it, but it helps me no longer. My Ipod was recognized several consecutive times after I posted this with no work-around, but then it became an unknown device again, and there it stays, seemingly forever.
I am a highly skilled and experienced Windows system programmer, and this has me stumped. I apologize for any time that my message may have wasted for others. I have also tried every other solution that has been posted here and elsewhere, and none work.
I would recommend that Apple pay me a lot of money to find and fix this problem. Short of that, they should pay someone else to fix it. To have this many fatal problems for so many people should be considered unacceptable. Until a fix is available, I shall just be happy that I got as much onto my Ipod as I did before it became unavailable.

Hi~! I got tired of finding solution to this one, or let's say 3 problems in one. I reformat this laptop due to it's slow and lagging state. When I'm done reformatting, it's wifi button doesnt work and stayed orange light which means it's off.then I'v e tried connecting it to the router via cable (i forgot what it's called) then stil it doesnt work.. What is wrong with my 2730p? (Lag, Mouse Device Problems)

long story short, i have been having tremendous usability issues with my laptop, including mouse problems and tremendous lag (both with and without the hdd), and missing/broken system files which sfc/ scannow fails at fixing.
the system in question has an L9400 cpu, 4 gigs of ram, vista business and linux mint 11 installed in a dual boot configuration to a toshiba mk1633gsg mini sata hdd, and there are also many livecds and liveusbs that are used with this pc.
an hp technician on another forum has informed me that these issues may be indicative of a failing hdd, and it has been made apparent by many other users on some other forums that toshiba hdds have a pretty bad reputation ... however, after removing the hdd and running the system from a livecd, i have surprisingly encountered many new problems:
(the following occurs with the hdd removed)
a linux mint 6 live cd which works perfectly fine for all other tested systems gets stuck while loading the os. it either gets stuck while loading "acpi modules" or " /casper/vmlinuz" or, if it can get past those, the os loading progress bar gets stuck at approximately the same place each time, where it will stay motionless until the system quits on its own and spits out this error: "isolinux: disk error 01, ax = 4200, drive 9f"
the laptop can boot from a linux mint 11 livecd about 50-60 percent of the time. the other 40-50 percent of the time, it also gets stuck at loading "acpi modules" or " /casper/vmlinuz" BUT if it can get to the screen where there is a progress bar, it tends to load the os completely.
while running from a linuxmint 11 livecd with the hdd removed, in a very well conditioned room, suddenly:
with about 15-20 tabs open, after watching a few youtube videos, i lost ctrl-v paste.
then i lost right click functionality,
then i lost the ability to alt-tab into other open programs,
then i lost the ability to click on anything other than what is within the firefox window (i could click on all of the browser buttons, all of the tabs, all of the links but i could not shrink or minimize the window or switch to another program).
then there was lag when saving a txt file to a portable hdd.
this is utterly bizzare. with the ram passing 8 hours of memtest86 without errors and with the hdd removed and with only about 20 tabs open, what could be causing these problems?
furthermore, with the hdd attached:
in vista and linuxmint 11 (both installed to hdd), the mouse problems are currently:
the right mouse button becomes unresponsive after about 3-7 tabs are opened in firefox OR after a large video file is opened in vlc,
the left mouse button will randomly lose functionality after about 10 tabs are opened OR after a large video file is opened in vlc (the lmb will randomly work in some windows and not in others or it becomes completely unresponsive),
usb mice which used to work perfectly fine are no longer recognized and
the pen may not work at all upon boot.
furthermore, there have been 2 longstanding mouse problems that have been with this pc for as long as the current hdd has been in use;
the left mouse button becomes completely unresponsive in flash games (while still working outside of the game) when a moderate number of targets appear (5 enemies),
and the pen has the strange tendency to connect the leading points of successive dashes and lines shortly after those lines are drawn (eg: if i draw a lowercase t, with one line going downward and the other going from left to right, the resulting figure will look like a cross for about .25 seconds before it suddenly and inexplicably transforms into a 'number 4' shape with a very thin line connecting the leading edges of the 2 dashes), thus making it completely useless for drawing and handwriting recognition.
prior to the hdd scans, these mouse problems would occur without fail about 15 seconds (and no sooner, strangely) after the enter password screen appears on vista or immediately upon boot in linuxmint and there would also be incredible lag associated with every mouse click in both vista and linuxmint (including an extra lag of about 7-30 seconds every 3 seconds in vista).
this is the 2nd hdd to fail in this laptop in 2 years, albeit both hdds had a few years of use.
the following TESTS have been conducted:
ran the embedded hp hdd and memory diagnostics , passed with no errors , had no effect
the hdd passed seatools' long test , and the ram passed 8 hours of memtest86 with both sticks of ram connected. i have not (yet) attempted to run memtest with the reverse orientation or with each stick by itself.

the hdd instafailed both smartudm and the 'toshiba smart' test (from hirens boot cd 15.2 )due to not detecting an ide drive.

the operating temps are not the highest they've ever been ... between 37-40 degrees celcius
ac adapter voltage (checked with multimeter) is perfectly stable and within parameters ...
pc wizard 2012 crashes immediately upon starting and restarts into debug mode ...
another disk check, following a hard shutoff, has resulted in more stabilized behavior; lag and mouse problems only occur if a certain (small) amount of system resources are used (3 tabs in firefox before problems start occuring).
is it possible that some other problem is causing the hdds to fail? i'm wondering if there may be a capacitor problem or something ...
there are some new problems:
i get this message: 'Non-System disk or disk error' (with the main hdd connected) despite the fact that no external drives are connected. usually, turning the pc off and on again resolves this, but i wonder if this is indicative of a bigger issue.
also, it is really difficult to boot from usb for some reason; despite attempting many methods, hirens boot cd had to be burned to a cd before i could use it.

Windows 7 No bootable device problem

I am trying to install Windows 7 on my late-2009 27" iMac. I tried installing Windows two different times from both disc and ISO image and after partitioning, the iMac restarts and a black screen comes up with a message that says "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key." What is the problem? Why won't it install?

Disconnect all USB devices except kb and mouse

Laptop stopped booting due to EFI boot device problems [SOLVED]

Hi,
I'm writing this from my old laptop. My Lenovo U330 touch will not boot. When I turn it on it states that 'default boot device is missing or boot failed'. It used to go to gummiboot and there were Linux and Windows boot options.
I can boot from an Arch USB drive and chroot but when I try to reinstall gummiboot or grub I get errors:

# grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=$esp --bootloader-id=grub --recheck --debug

On this laptop there are various partitions for EFI and a small Windows 8 partition.
I guess there is some problem with the $esp
It should be /dev/sda2 and / is dev/sda6. All seem to be present and correct with fdisk -l, however, for some reason there is a boot flag on /
I've tried to sort it out for a few hours now. Please if anyone can help that would be amazing.

@OP, are you literally typing:
gummiboot --path=$esp install
If so, $esp is a variable. So in your case you would need to set esp=/boot. But gummiboot's default --path for install is actually /boot. So you should only need to do:
gummiboot install

USB Mass Storage device problem

Hello, I cant use my USB mass storage device in my computer, it is a SanDisk ImageMate CF/SM unit, which works perfectly in every other computer I have tried it, but in this one it hangs while accessing the device, and in linux, it hangs while mounting it (the same thing).
I dont know what might the problem be but some other people have seen the same problem, perhaps someone here can help me.

It is possible that the PKCS11 configuration file that maps the JCE to the P11 library from Aladdin is incorrect. Have you contacted your vendor's support group and asked them for a sample configuration file that works?
One way to (partially) test the JCE-PKCS11 bridge for the eToken is to generate a key-pair and a self-signed certificate using the Mozilla tools (which can use the P11 library from Aladdin directly) (download from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/tools/certutil.html). After you've verified that the keys (and certificate) are on the token (using certutil or Firefox), then use your JCE software to read the keys/certificate. If your bridge configuration is correct, you should be able to read and use all objects (PrivateKey, PublicKey and Certificate). After you've verified that this part works, then go back to testing key-generation through your JCE module.
No, you can't just save the keys by themselves using the JCE. The KeyStore API allows for saving only a PrivateKey, SecretKey and a Certificate chain using the setEntry, setKeyEntry or setCertificateEntry methods. You will have to create an empty certificate, at a minimum, to store the PublicKey of your key-pair.
Here is some sample code that does this for a Utimaco Hardware Security Module (HSM) in combination with the BouncyCastle JCE Provider (BC has a CertificateGenerator that makes this task easy):

[Wine] - How to deal with undetected ALSA Device problem

sorry for that nonsense, I'm just too happy after two days trying to make my speaker work with Wine. For those who get same problem with me (Wine didn't detect your ALSA device correctly and/or didn't list it on winecfg), this is simple workaround to get them working.
Note: In oppose to Wiki's advice to install wine-suse from AUR, I use Wine from Community repo. AUR install always give me "WARNING: Dependencies have been installed before the failure" error
Additional note: Using this workaround. One may get error when try to use sound test within winecfg, and you'll likely get this error message on terminal:

domain_uplevel only affects how we do LDAP search. It will have no effect on users that are not in your LDAP,.
Setting up a "domain smarthost" will cause messages addressed to unknown users to be routed to the host placed in the "smarthost". That would handle your issue, as long as the second box is "authoratative" for your domain, and doesn't send messages it doesn't know what to do with, to the Messaging Server.
Or, you could add all the users to your LDAP, and put the "mailhost" to msg2. That will route their mails over to the other box.

[solved] USB storage devices problem

Hello everyone. I have MSI Wind U270 and recently I've moved from Ubuntu 11.04 to Arch. I really like Arch so far but I have one quite big problem and I can't find any solution, so I hope someone here could help me.
After I'd installed Arch, I tried to copy some file from/to USB flash drive. After just few seconds, transfer failed with information about I/O errors and USB flash drive disappeared along with any other USB drives connected at the same time but logitech usb mouse and keyboard continue to work.
My first thought was that it's simply broken USB drive, but same thing was happening also when I tried to move some files from/to any other USB storage device that I have.

Next I thought – computer is broken. But it simply couldn't be true because in Ubuntu it's working.
I wanted to test if USB transfer is working in other distros, so I downloaded few and tried:
Ubuntu 11.04 – everything is working
Ubuntu 11.10 – it's not working, exactly same errors as in Arch
Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 – it's not working
Mint 11 – it's working
Mint 12 – it's not working
So one thing in common that I can think of is fact that USB transfer is working in distros using kernel <3.0 and is broken in those using kernel >=3.0.
In dmesg output I can see ehci_hcd errors. When I remove this module before moving files, than everything is working fine apart from very slow transfer but it's obvious.
I really hope that someone will be able to help with my problem. I don't know if it's some bug or it's just some configuration error.
EDIT: problems were caused by rts5139 module (card reader). Blacklisting that module solved all the problems.

Dear Friends,
I have problem with the printer,
We have given Output device( Printer ) in User profile i.e su01, while executing the transaction ideally system should pick this printer if the same user is giving the print, But in our case user trying to give KSB1 report line items, in this transction system is picking up different printer.
Let me know in this regard

Hi Anand,
Try to maintain the printer in SU3 tcode. It will come same printer while taking he KSB1 printout also just now i tested it is coming properly.
