Dfont and ttc

Case:
I work under OSX 10.6 and would like to use the Font "HelveticaNeue.ttc" in a Keynote Presentation.
As far as I know, this Font is not in OSX 10.5. But as "HelveticaNeue.dfont".
Question:
Will there be Problems or Conflicts if this presentation is opened in Keynote under OSX 10.5?

You might best save the one with the latest date or version in fontbook > preview > show font info.
In general 10.6 replaced .dfont by .ttc

  • HelveticaNeue.dfont cant be replaced by a postscript font as in 10.4 and

    I have always replaced the .dfonts with postscript fonts for prepress and print design - this is vital.
    Now OSX replaces it as soon as I delete it even after I replace it with a ps version.
    How can I get around this "feature"?
    It is a vital issue, upon which hundreds of upgrades under my watch are waiting for.
    10.5 can not be deployed until designers can use postscript fonts for printing. If we are forced to use only the .dfont version we can not upgrade. Ever.
    The .dfont is not acceptable as it does not contain the same number of typefaces as the adobe postscript version. Styles that are used in numerous ongoing designs, and mixing font types with one font is taboo in the print world.
    I need a way to force the replacement.
    (Extensis suitcase overriding system fonts is not a solution either.)

    We prepress professionals don't use Font Book. I use Font Explorer here others use Suitcase. The SOP was to replace all the dFonts that are used in printing to Type one fonts, by replacing them in System/Library/Fonts. That can no longer be accomplished as the dFonts "respawn" if removed creating a font conflict because you can't have a dFont and a Type One active at the same time.
    For your average user this is not an issue, just for designers and prepress monkeys.

  • MacBook startup extremely slow and troubleshooting solutions haven't worked. What can I do?

    My MacBook is about a year old, and recently it became extremely slow during startup. At first it just seemed a little slow,  but the past couple of days it has taken more and more time. It's now taking 5 - 10 minutes to fully come on. Once it's on, everything is fine.
    I've troubleshooted in Apple Communities and tried all of the advice I've found, but nothing seems to be working.  Here are the details.
    My computer:
    MacBook
    OS 10.7.4
    Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Available hard disk space: 163.27 GB free (out of 249.2 GB)
    What I've tried so far (in order):
    1. Check startup disk - Startup disk was correctly selected
    2. Use Disk Utility to Verify Hard Disk - No problems identified
    3. Updated system software - no major updates (I update regularly to begin with)
    4. Check System Monitor for hidden activity - Almost no activity (no other programs were running at the time); no strange users or activity
    5. Check Login Items - The iTunesHelper was causing an error. I removed it and replaced it with iTunesHelper from the iTunes Package. The error was fixed, but no improvement in startup time. (Current Login items: GrowlMenu, GrowlHelperApp (Growl is up to date), iTunesHelper, Dropbox)
    6. Check Library System Fonts - All necessary fonts for OS 10.7.4 are present. I haven't added or deleted fonts besides what can be installed with the OS and or with MS Office. Here the full list (long):

    7. Verified and repaired disk permissions (there were several differences, they were all repaired).
    I don't know what else to try. My Mac's not making any strange noises, and is otherwise running well. The only thing that I can think of is that it's been too humid in my house recently (rainy season in Japan). But the slow startup seems to be the same regardless of time of day and humidity, and if it were humidity I have no idea how to fix that. Also, none of my other Mac devices seem to be similarly affected, so I doubt that's the problem.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

    It turns out that my hard drive was shot. I took my MacBook to the Apple Store on Wednesday, they kept it for analysis and repair. They replaced the hard drive, and I've already got it back (Friday; less than two days in total).
    Although I did check my hard disk with the disk utility, it did not identify the problem.
    Some other troubleshooting advice that I overlooked was to try reinstalling my OS and to try starting up in Safe Mode. Neither would have helped in this case, but they may be useful for someone else having similar problems.
    Other advice - always make sure your data is backed up and that you Apple Care coverage is up to date.

  • Differences between Oracle JDBC Thin and Thick Drivers

    If any body is looking for this information...
    ============================================================
    I have a question concerning the Oracle JDBC thin vs. thick drivers
    and how they might affect operations from an application perspective.
    We're in a Solais 8/Oracle 8.1.7.2 environment. We have several
    applications on several servers connecting to the Oracle database.
    For redundancy, we're looking into setting up TAF (transparent
    application failover). Currently, some of our apps use the Oracle
    <B>JDBC thin</B> drivers to talk to the database, with a connection
    string that like this:
    <B> jdbc:oracle:thin:@host:port:ORACLE_SID </B>
    In a disaster recovery mode, where we would switch the database
    from one server to another, the host name in the above string
    would become invalid. That means we have to shut down our application
    servers and restart them with an updated string.
    Using the Oracle <B>OCI (thick)</B> driver though, allows us to connect
    to a Net8 service instead of a specific server:
    <B> jdbc:oracle:oci8:@NET8_SERVICE_NAME </B>
    Coupled with the FAILOVER=ON option configured in Net8, it is
    then possible to direct a connection from the first server to
    the failover database on another server. This is exactly what
    we would like to do.
    My question is, from an application perspective, how is the Oracle
    thick driver different from the thin driver? If everything
    else is "equal" (i.e. the thick driver is compatible with the
    app servers) would there be something within the the thick/OCI
    driver that could limit functionality vs. the thin driver?
    My understand, which obviously is sketchy, is that the thick
    driver is a superset of the thin driver. If this is the case,
    and for example if all database connections were handled through
    a configuration file with the above OCI connection string, then
    theoretically the thick driver should work.
    ============================================================
    <B>
    In the case with the Oracle, they provide a thin driver that is a 100% Java driver for client-side use without the need of an Oracle installation (maybe that's why we need to input server name and port number of the database server). This is platform indipendent, and has good performance and some features.
    The OCI driver on the other hand is not java, require Oracle installation, platform dependent, performance is faster, and has a complete list of all the features.
    </B>
    ========================================================
    I hope this is what you expect.
    JDBC OCI client-side driver: This is a JDBC Type 2 driver that uses Java native methods to call entrypoints in an underlying C library. That C library, called OCI (Oracle Call Interface), interacts with an Oracle database. <B>The JDBC OCI driver requires an Oracle (7.3.4 or above) client installation (including SQL*Net v2.3 or above) and all other dependent files.</B> The use of native methods makes the JDBC OCI driver platform specific. Oracle supports Solaris, Windows, and many other platforms. This means that the Oracle JDBC OCI driver is not appropriate for Java applets, because it depends on a C library to be preinstalled.
    JDBC Thin client-side driver: This is a JDBC Type 4 driver that uses Java to connect directly to Oracle. It emulates Oracle's SQL*Net Net8 and TTC adapters using its own TCP/IP based Java socket implementation. <B>The JDBC Thin driver does not require Oracle client software to be installed, but does require the server to be configured with a TCP/IP listener. Because it is written entirely in Java, this driver is platform-independent.</B> The JDBC Thin driver can be downloaded into any browser as part of a Java application. (Note that if running in a client browser, that browser must allow the applet to open a Java socket connection back to the server.
    JDBC Thin server-side driver: This is another JDBC Type 4 driver that uses Java to connect directly to Oracle. This driver is used internally by the JServer within the Oracle server. This driver offers the same functionality as the client-side JDBC Thin driver (above), but runs inside an Oracle database and is used to access remote databases. Because it is written entirely in Java, this driver is platform-independent. There is no difference in your code between using the Thin driver from a client application or from inside a server.
    ======================================================
    How does one connect with the JDBC Thin Driver?
    The the JDBC thin driver provides the only way to access Oracle from the Web (applets). It is smaller and faster than the OCI drivers, and doesn't require a pre-installed version of the JDBC drivers.
    import java.sql.*;
    class dbAccess {
    public static void main (String args []) throws SQLException
    DriverManager.registerDriver (new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection
    ("jdbc:oracle:thin:@qit-uq-cbiw:1526:orcl", "scott", "tiger");
    // @machineName:port:SID, userid, password
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    ResultSet rset = stmt.executeQuery("select BANNER from SYS.V_$VERSION");
    while (rset.next())
    System.out.println (rset.getString(1)); // Print col 1
    stmt.close();
    How does one connect with the JDBC OCI Driver?
    One must have Net8 (SQL*Net) installed and working before attempting to use one of the OCI drivers.
    import java.sql.*;
    class dbAccess {
    public static void main (String args []) throws SQLException
    try {
    Class.forName ("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection
    ("jdbc:oracle:oci8:@qit-uq-cbiw_orcl", "scott", "tiger");
    // or oci7 @TNSNames_Entry, userid, password
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    ResultSet rset = stmt.executeQuery("select BANNER from SYS.V_$VERSION");
    while (rset.next())
    System.out.println (rset.getString(1)); // Print col 1
    stmt.close();
    =================================================================

    Wow, not sure what your question was, but there sure was a lot of information there...
    There really is only one case where failover occurs, and it would not normally be in a disaster recovery situation, where you define disaster recovery as the obliteration of your current server farm, network and concievably the operational support staff. This would require a rebuild of your server, network etc and isn't something done with software.
    Fail over is normally used for high availablity that would take over in case of hardware server failure, or when your support staff wants to do maintenance on the primary server.
    Using the thin and thick driver should have ZERO affect on a failover. Transparent failover will make the secondary server the same IP as the primary, therefore the hostname will still point to the appropriate server. If you are doing this wrong, then you will have to point all your applications to a new IP address. This should be something that you tell your management is UNACCEPTABLE in a fail-over situation, since it is almost sure to fail to fail-over.
    You point out that you are providing the TNSNAME, rather than the HOSTNAME when using the thick driver. That's true within your application, but that name is resolved to either a HOSTNAME, or IP ADDRESS before it is sent to the appropriate Oracle server/instance. It is resolved using either a NAME server (same as DNS server but for Oracle), or by looking at a TNSNAMES file. Since the TNSNAMES files profilerate like rabbits within an organization you don't want a fail over that will make you find and switch all the entries, so you must come up with a fail over that does not require it.
    So, the application should not be concerned with either the hostname, or the IP address changing during fail over. That makes use of the thin or thick client acceptable for fail over.
    Don't know if this will help, but this shows the communication points.
    THIN DRIVER
    client --> dns --> server/port --> SID
    THICK DRIVER
    client --> names server --> dns --> server/port --> SID
    client --> tnsnames     --> dns --> server/port --> SID

  • [Workaround available] Some ttc fonts not shown in Libreoffice

    This is a prolonged (for more than 1 years maybe) issue for me: My LibreOffice installation does not recognize any ttc fonts. (And I cannot bear this anymore for some reason)
    ttc fonts are merely a comination of two or more ttf fonts. I have installed both ttf and ttc fonts in /usr/share/fonts/TTF directory either by copying them into the directory and run `fc-cache -fv` or by installing those font packages in repositories. But LibreOffice can only recognize those ttf fonts, not ttc ones.
    * I have tried both "libreoffice-writer" and "libreoffice-fresh" packages from official repositories, with "~/.config/libreoffice" deleted.
    * I have no "~/.font*" or "~/.confg/fontconfig" directory.
    * Those ttc fonts I installed CAN be recognized in any other "Select font" dialog.
    * I tried Abiword and it CAN also recognized those ttc fonts.
    * Not a single ttc font, but all the ttc fonts cannot be recognized by LibreOffice.
    Any ideas?
    UPDATE:
    I found out that some of the ttc fonts can actually be recognized by LibreOffice, others, however, can not.

    /usr/share/fonts/wenquanyi/wqy-microhei/wqy-microhei.ttc # YES
    Here is all the ttc fonts I have installed. "ukai.ttc" is from ttf-arphic-ukai package, and "wqy-microhei.ttc" is from wqy-microhei package. All the others come from aur/ttf-ms-win8. I copied these fonts from a Windows 8.1 installation media and the integrity check is passed.
    Only five of them (those with "YES" marks) are listed in LibreOffice. The others are not.
    I am very confused.
    UPDATE 2:
    It seems that this is a prolonged bug in LibreOffice. I modified the PKGBUILD file of aur/ttf-ms-win8, spliting those ttc files into ttf files.

    You just added them to 'ttcs_to_extract', don't you?
    Yes, here is the modified part:
    Nice, that's what I wrote that function for! I will update package based on your findings soon.
    Wow! I love your function, too!
    However, please note, that spliting those CJK fonts will result in very large package sizes. A typical Chinese ttc font is about ~35 MiB and contains 2 - 4 font weights (styles), so there will be 2 - 4 ttf files, which have a total size of ~150 MiB or more.

    254M ttf-ms-win8-zh_tw-6.3.9600.17050-1-any.pkg.tar
    These are the packages my modified PKGBUILD generated. You can see how large they are compared to those ttc versions. And the only reason to split ttcs is that LibreOffice has a bug recognizing them. (Other programs recognize ttcs well)

  • HELP! InDesign with Snow Leopard - missing Symbol dfont

    I have a Mac Pro and have just update to Snow Leopard. Now, Symbol dfont is gone.
    I do technical journals and books for a living and I work with many equations and formulas. I also use MathType. A client of mine is very particular about the consistancy of fonts used, mainly, the Symbol font. Snow Leopard seems to have removed Symbol dfont (Med). This has made the consistancy of appearance a BIG problem. I have had to use Symbol ttf (which is now the default font for Symbol dfont . . . apparently) and the difference is noticable.
    Is there a way of putting the Symbol dfont back into the system folder without it becoming a nightmare? According to the OSX ver. 6, it was suppose to have this. Did they take it away in its updates to OSX ver. 6? Any help would be most appreciated.

    10.6 Ships with Symbol.ttf rather than Symbol.dfont. It's in /System/Library/Fonts/
    If you absolutely need the .dfont you could pull it off an old system. I have one handy and can sent you a link, but the ttf is probably better to use. See attached for version difference between ttf, dfont and the windows SYMBOL.TTF.
    The new one has ~30 more characters added to it and matches the windows version.

  • MathType and Symbol fonts on Mac

    I'm running MathType 6.0a, InDesign CS4 6.03 on Mac OSX 10.5.7
    There's a known issue with the Symbol font, but I can seem to get it to show up in InDesign or illustrator (It's fine in Word), though my system only shows one version of symbol, and it looks to be the correct one (stored in Macintosh HD > Library > Fonts)
    MathType recommends: (http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/TSN47.htm)
    What causes this problem
    The MathType installer moves the Symbol font suitcase into a folder that it creates called "Fonts (Disabled)" during installation to ensure that your system does not use it.
    When you upgrade your version of the Macintosh Operating System, reinstall Microsoft Office, or apply a patch to or invoke a "First Run" of Microsoft Office, these programs check your Fonts folder for the Symbol font suitcase. Since the Symbol font suitcase has been moved out of your Fonts folder, they install a Symbol font suitcase into your Fonts folder.
    Some users, because they do not see a Symbol font suitcase in their Fonts folder, place a copy there, possible moving the Symbol font suitcase from "Fonts (Disabled)" back into their Fonts folder.
    The best way to avoid receiving this error message is to manually remove the Symbol font suitcase from the Fonts folder in your System folder after upgrading Mac OS, or reinstalling, applying a patch to, or invoking a "First Run" of  Microsoft Office or one of its components.
    This worked for my home computer, but isn't working on my work computer (where I really need it).
    I've also tried repairing permissions as per, http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/tsn126.htm
    I run FontExplorer (the old free version), but it's useless for dealing with system fonts.
    Does anyone know anything else I can try?

    You may want to rerun in FEX > Tools > Clean System Font Folder… on the chance that your evil computer put it back.
    Que the Indd Secret Site:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/removing-nonessential-system-fonts-in-leopard.php
    Apple says:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1642
    Anything other than:
    Monaco.dfont
    LucidaGrande.dfont
    LastResort.dfont
    Keyboard.dfont
    Geneva.dfont
    and a working copy of Helvetica (any brand will do and only then assuming you need Photoshop), will get you where you need in terms of fonts. Every other font in your system is wholly optionally and I personally let FEX manage anything that isn't the above five fonts, think anyone who doesn't is making a mistake.
    Short version. Delete every copy of Symbol and run every command under the Tools menu of FEX, throw two reboots in the machine and hope for the best.

  • Keyboard Issue - Works but wrong characters (and in Mail only!)

    Running 10.4.9 - I had this happen before the update
    A couple of the input keys (M, N, A, O, and others) produce the opposite keystroke. Oddly, this happens on ONLY in the MacMail program. Others are not affected. Thoughts?

    No - definitely only keep ONE version of Helvetica*, PS OR .dfont (you also want to keep one flavor of Helvetica Neue).
    If you have fairly extensive set of Postscript Helvetica, and you use it in your graphics Apps, that's probably the better choice.
    If you opt to go with Helv PS, I'd put all the bits (Printer & bitmaps in as subfolder of the System/Fonts folder) just move the dFont elsewhere (not in any font folder) -- You'll have to enter your password
    Keeping the dfont version is simpler otherwise, but be aware - you really won't want to use Helvetica Narrow PS (or a host of other variants in Adobe Apps.) And if you have a postscript printer, it may not be too happy.
    Once you've made the change, I'd advise restarting.
    Then: doing the cache cleaning (you'll have to restart again
    (You still MUST run of the Font cache cleaners since the symptoms described are a giveaway of font cache corruption.)
    There's an EXCELLENT named something like 'Using and Managing fonts in OSX' that can be found in the 'Pro' section of this website.
    **Oddly, I haven't ran into serious probs with other fonts when both a dFont and PS version exist, but I definitely had issues with Helvetica dups.

  • Removing helvetica and H... neue

    I have about 15 macs (all 10.4.11). I installed a separate drive to test 10.5... I have a problem with both Helvetica and H... Neue. I can not delete the dfont and install the adobe type 1 postscript face. If I install the Helvetica type one then delete the dfont, the system responds that the face is needed by the OS and reinstalls it.
    I can not have both of these faces loaded or some of my less experienced uses will use them and I will have kaka everywhere.
    How can I remove these faces and install the adobe type one versions.

    This particular workaround is a very tiny risk for a careful person and certainly nothing that can't be easily undone.
    As far as updates go, I cannot answer that question since I haven't had to go through that experience yet. It's not a major job though so if it needs to be redone, so be it.
    It's a fact that the Apple Truetype version of Helvetica can wreak havoc on documents that were created with Postscript fonts and very few designers want to
    have to go through a multipage document fixing everything.
    Then there's the problem of those who are unaware of the issue who load Postscript fonts along with the Truetype System version and encounter difficulties at print time.
    Apple's engineers made a mistake when they made such widely used fonts as Helvetica and Helvetica Neue a part of the required System font library. They really should undo their mistake in a future version of the OS.
    If they had gone the whole nine yards and included every style of those two families as part of the System font library that would have been acceptable to me, but they didn't. As a designer, I need the entire family available in a common format.
    So I need to fix it and the risk is very, very small that something will go wrong.

  • How to install fonts from CS3 into CS5?

    At work I often need the font DIN which was installed with our version CS3. At home I have CS5 and I do not know how to install the needed fonts. I packed the relevant file with the fonts and other links into a directory but how can I install the fonts at my personal computer using Windows. When using a Mac it was quite easy to install the font, I just click at the font within the directory "fonts" and with another click on "install" I got the font. My PC however asks me which programme I want the file to open with - but which one should it be? It can't be Word, Photoshop, IrfanView or whatever. So what do I do? Can anybody please help me?

    Well.. there are many different kinds of font files out there. Some of them advertise the type of font in the filename, e.g.
    DINBold.otf
    DINBold.ttf
    DINBold.pfm
    DIN.dfont
    DIN.ttc
    and so on.
    Others, typically Mac fonts, don't have a file extension that tells us what kind of file it is. Of those Mac fonts, there's one kind that you can't use on Windows at all, because when you look at it in Windows the size is zero kilobytes. The fact that, at some point in the past, you moved a file from Mac to Windows without font problems does not make a platform-compatibility problem any more or less likely - perhaps it was all set in fonts you already had installed at home. The fact that right now it doesn't work in the Document Fonts folder makes me believe that you may have a Mac font resource fork problem - that's what would make the filesize 0k. If your fonts don't have file extensions (or if you have file extensions hidden by Windows, which is the way Win7 works by default) then you can't really know what kind of font file it is. Looking at the Properties of the font file will tell you, though.
    Lastly: since you don't own an (extra) license for the font, you'd be ripping off the font developers by installing it on your home computer, although obviously not intentionally.

  • Font problem in snow leopard

    Up until I installed snow leopard I had access to a whole range of helvetica fonts.
    When I installed snow leopard I was prompted about a conflict which I opted to choose "resolve".
    After this I no longer had access to these fonts.
    I attempted to reopen them with font book and they show no conflicts, yet I can't choose them as they are not visible.
    I rebooted both the computer and quarkxpress 8 and still do not see them, yet they are visible in font book menu. (click on link)
    Can someone please guide me so that I can get my fonts back?
    I seem to recall they were marked as postscript fonts.
    I know very little about using font book, so please give me step by step if possible.
    Your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks
    The fonts show up in both "All Fonts" and "User Fonts"

    Hellol Frank,
    Most of what you write about is for user who open and close fonts, I leave mine open all time, does that make a difference?
    Regardless of a person's preference of having fonts open or closed, Apple's versions of Helvetica are preventing you from opening the versions of Helvetica you require because they conflict. Font Book absolutely will not let deactivate Apple's fonts (nor will any other font manager). To use your Helvetica fonts, you must manually remove Apple's versions.
    I show the following fonts in my System>Library>Fonts folder:
    HelveL TMM
    Helvetica LT MM
    Helvetica.dfont
    HelveticaNeue.ttc
    The Multiple Master fonts are fine. It's Helvetica.dfont and HelveticaNeue.ttc that are preventing you from opening your preferred versions of these fonts.
    Do I undertand that I should drag these out of the folder, or do I delete them in some other way?
    As noted in the article, you must do this in two places. First remove Helvetica.dfont and HelveticaNeue.ttc from the ProtectedFonts folder. If you don't do that, OS X immediately copies certain fonts from the ProtectedFonts folder if you try to remove them from /System/Library/Fonts/ folder.
    Once the fonts are gone from the ProtectedFonts folder, you'll be able to permanently remove them from the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder. Once in the trash, restart the Mac and you should be able to use any version of Helvetica you want.
    Also noted in the article, make copies of Apple's versions somewhere else first. Then you'll be able to activate them like any other font with your font manager. The rules against having more than one version of Helvetica active still applies though. You can't have Apple's fonts and any other like version of Helvetica active at the same time regardless of their location on the hard drive.

  • Strange behavior, Mail malfunction, Final Cut malfunction + more

    Hi guys!
    I just wanna share some experience with you that hopefully can solve some of you with problems:
    It started with Mail keep crashing the minute I tried to click on a message in order to read it. Final Cut X started, but nothing showed up in my projects. I could create a new event in Calendar, but was unable to edit it.
    This made me wonder if it could be font related (I have had strange things happen regarding fonts during the years with Mac...)
    And, it was!
    I restored the System's Fonts folder from a Time Machine backup, and the problem was either or (or possibly both) HelveticaNeue (HelveticaNeue.dfont) and (HelveticaNeueDeskUI.ttc), so make sure that these fonts are present in that folder, and turn them off in if you for instance run Suitcase for your fontfolio.
    Restart after making sure that the fonts are present in System/Library/Fonts folder.
    Hope it help some of you guys out there!

    In short, I was running a website (no mail services at the time) that was heavily dependent on PHP for dynamic content, I was told that we were on the latest security patchlevel for all the software on the box.
    A hacker took advantage of a security hole in the old version of PHP we were running (which the hosting company told me had been patched) to install a suite of spam generators and backdoors.
    I found out about the hack when my hosting company shut down my server for "excessive bandwidth" which I didn't understand since our site was running very slowly. I had to go to the hosting company to log in to the box, and found so much excess crap running I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My website was being used to send out mass amounts of spam, as well as blast IP packets at an IP that I learned was a bank in Hong Kong. Along with all the other stuff, a timer process was running (with an artificially small pid - don't know how they did that....) that would create a root-level user whenever it wanted to.
    I had to take my SQL dumps and my initial-state backup (thank god I did that before taking the site live) and reconstruct the server after deleting everything and reloading the latest versions and patches of everything.
    That experience has made me very jumpy when it comes to server security.
    Bottom line is, I monitor the websites of all the S/W I depend on for security announcements, and I'm constantly on the alert for issues which would apply to me.
    Sorry if I frightened anyone, but the email header that Tobias posted looked eerily similar to what my server was sending out when it was under the evil influence.

  • What are the system fonts needed for Lion to run?

    I work in a Prepress Department and the only way to properly work with fonts in this enviroment is to have the bare minimum fonts necessary for an OS to run correctly which is usually around 30 or less fonts. Then we use suitcase to load fonts provided by customers and we know for sure we are using the exact fonts used to build the job say in Quark or Indesign. Before moving system fonts from Lion into a disabled folder I was hoping for a list of sysytem fonts that are absolutely needed to run Lion without issues.

  • Flash Player 11 constantly crashing on every Website with Flashcontent...

    Hi,
    I am having problems with the latest Update of Adobe Flash Player to release 11. I am on a Mac(10.6.8) running the 64bit kernel. At the moment I installed Flash Player 11, every Website with Flashcontent is crashing. This also happens in Chrome, not only Safari or Firefox. I did everything Adobe provides as possible solutions. Do an uninstall with the uninstaller, then install fresh. I had a look in both of the Internet Plugins folder to make sure everything got removed correctly. But the new install won't work.
    What works is uninstalling Flash Player 11 and installing Flash Player 10.3 again. Everything works like a charm then. Well... except in Chrome of course.
    Just as a last bit of information: I never had any beta or alpha versions of the player installed.
    Can anyone please help me? Does anyone else encounter this problem?
    Regards

  • Can you repair your fonts?...

    I know this is my fault, but I'm wondering if I can fix it. I'm a graphic designer, and I've always had problems with Helvetica and now Helvetica Nueue because I use them for designing and the OS uses a different version, so I had followed the instructions I found elsewhere to "fix" them, but now I know that I've borked my fonts because I can't read the headers of e-mails, and other things because the system font isn't working.
    So, long story short, isn't there a way to re-install the system fonts or something of the kind so that I can go back to how it was. I should also say that I use Font Explorer Pro to manage my fonts.
    I'm also inserting a screen capture of what some web sites look like in Safari now because I'm getting a Capital "A" in a box instead of the proper words.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    In order to use the Helvetica fonts you need for your projects (assuming they are not Apple's versions), you simply can't allow Apple's Helvetica fonts to exist in their normal location since you then cannot turn them off.
    What you need to do is have Apple's fonts set aside in their own folder, not in any of the Fonts folders, so you can control them.
    Not sure what article you found, but the instructions for getting Apple's fonts out of the way are in my article, Font Management in OS X. Remove these fonts from both the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, and the buried ProtectedFonts folder. Do the protected ones first so they don't automatically replace those in the System's Fonts folder.
    Next, you need to get these fonts back onto the hard drive as I noted above. In a generic folder outside of any Fonts folder. For that, you can use Pacifist. Put your Snow Leopard installation DVD in the drive and use Pacifist to extract the various Helvetica fonts to your new folder.
    You will need all of these to satisfy Snow Leopard's normal list of fonts:
    Helvetica.dfont
    HelveticaNeue.ttc
    HelveticaLight.ttf
    HelveticaLightItalic.ttf
    Once you have your folder of Apple's Helvetica fonts set aside, you're ready to continue.
    To remove Font Book from the hard drive, follow these steps:
    1) Open Font Book, and then its preferences. Uncheck the box for "Alert me if system fonts change". Close the preferences and shut down Font Book. Put the Font Book application in the trash and delete it.
    2) Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding it until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally.
    This will reset Font Book's database and clear the cache files in your user account. All fonts in the three main Fonts folders (System, Library, your user account) will now be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
    3) Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
    This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
    With Font Book completely gone, and all cache files cleared and rebuilt, things should now be displaying correctly.
    Hello Kurt!
    I have read both your "Font Management in OS X" article and the referenced "Undoing Font Book" (unfortunately, this article only goes as far as Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and I'm not sure whether everything would be the sam in Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.)
    I've followed all the instructions in your article as soon as I've got my new iMac 2.5 GHz Intel a couple of months ago, but some things are not working right with fonts: Working on a QuarkXPress Passport document previously saved, I was unable to use the HelveticaNeue.ttc font that I had used when originally working on the file as QuarkXPress told me the font was missing.
    When in Font Book I tried to see what the problem with this font was, it showed conflicts with "multiple copies of this (as well with other) font" which I cannot resolve by clicking on "resolve duplicate font conflicts": it asks whether I "want to disable the selected fonts", which is not what I want. Actually, Font Book tells you that "you can use the Resolve Duplicates command to automatically deactivate the copies not in use."
    If I do this, I believe I won't be able to use whichever font so deactivated, or would I?
    I launched Font Book, opened its preferences and unchecked both "Alert me if system fonts change" and "Automatic font activation".
    I still get alerts such as "Finder requires AppleSymbols font", "Finder requires Aquakana-Bold font", "System font HelveticaLightItalic.ttff has been restored MacOSX needs it to display text onscreen" after either moving to another location or deleting them in preparation for a complete new Font Book reset as explained on your post.
    My question is, should I try removing Font Book from the hard drive and replacing it with a fresh copy and, if so should I do it the way you explain on your reply to stephmoreland?
    Even though Font Book is a "weak" font manager, I would rather stick with it as I believe it performs for the kind of work I do on my computer.
    Thank you so much for your help,
