DFS-R File Replication Authorative Restore

Hello,
There are several articles such as this one that show how to overcome a journal wrap in Server 2K8 and 2K12 using authorative restore:
https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2218556?wa=wsignin1.0
But these articles focus on SYSVOL, nothing about replicated folders. The way I have dealt with journal warps in replicated folders is to delete the DfsrPrivate folder inside each replicated folder and restart replication service.
My questions are:
1. Will the authorative restore reset the journal database non only for SYSVOL but also for replicated files or no?
2. In server 2012 my understanding is that while DFS-R is used to replicate files and folders, NTFRS is still used to replicate SYSVOL. Is that right?
3. What's the best way to recover from a wrapped journal pertaining specifically to replicated folders, not SYSVOL.

Hi,
A2: NTFRS will still in using if it is still needed. If there is still some old DCs in environment, DCs will still use FRS for replication AD (Sysvol) - From Windows server 2008 R2, by default DFSR will replace FRS for AD replication.
A1: From your description, you would like to set one of your folder target as primary to do an authenticate replication - even new files on other file servers should be overwritten by data on that primary server.
If this is true you can run the following command line to set one of your member server as Primary to do this job:
Dfsradmin Membership Set /RGName:<RG Name> /RFName:<RF Name> /MemName:<Member Name> /IsPrimary:True
Note: Data on other servers will be overwritten so backup important files first.

  • Recreate file replication eventlog view

    I am having
an issue and have no idea how it happened. We took over a domain and in the event viewer, there is no log area for File Replication Service. I understand that DFSRS has kind of replaced this service and replication is happening over the 4 DC's with no issues
but I am wondering if I get the service started for peace of mind. Every DC does not have this application and service logs, event viewer.
What I have tried so far:
Went into the system event log I see this error: A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the File Replication service to connect.<o:p></o:p>
The service has been disabled on every server. I tried to enable it and above is the error I received when I tried to start it in the event viewer. I then proceeded to try to look in the registry
and I noticed there were no entries HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/Services/eventlog for the File Replication Service. I exported that File Replication Service and imported it into the 4 servers. I closed and reopened computer management and the file replication
service event viewer showed up. It also was logging this Information log: The File Replication Service is starting. And then throwing this error: This domain controller has migrated to using the DFS Replication service to replicate the SYSVOL share. Use of
the File Replication Service for replication of non-SYSVOL content sets has been deprecated and therefore, the service has been stopped. The DFS Replication service is recommended for replication of folders, the SYSVOL share on domain controllers and DFS link
    targets. <o:p></o:p>
My next step was to try to register the dll files there were being used in the registry: %SystemRoot%\system32\els.dll (this one registered properly) C:\Windows\system32\ntfrsres.dll this one
failed. I tried to replace the dll file but it said I need permissions from the TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file which is where I stopped. <o:p></o:p>
Any ideas on what I should try next?
    Craig Becker

    Hi Craig,
So it is actually an AD related issue.
On Windows Server with FRS replication, to rebuild we can perform a D2 (nonauthoritative mode restore) to replicate from another DC.
Backing Up and Restoring an FRS-Replicated SYSVOL Folder
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc507518(v=vs.85).aspx
However as now your DCs are replicating with DFSR - is this your problem?
If so, please refer to this article to do a non-authoritative sync instead:

  • The File Replication Service has detected that the replica set "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" is in JRNL_WRAP_ERROR.

    Hi!
I recently took over management of a Windows 2003 domain that had only one domain controller.  I was building a second DC for redundancy and discovered that the SYSVOL share on the original DC is in "JRNL_WRAP_ERROR" after the SYSVOL and NETLOGON
share would not create on the new DC.  This error goes back as far as the log goes back so I don't know how long it has been in this state.
The message in the event log states to enable "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" but I found a KB article that says to use the BurFlags key instead. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762
Should I run an authoritative restore since I don't have another domain controller with a good SYSVOL?
The File Replication Service has detected that the replica set "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" is in JRNL_WRAP_ERROR.
Replica set name is    : "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)"
Replica root path is   : "c:\windows\sysvol\domain"
Replica root volume is : "\\.\C:"
A Replica set hits JRNL_WRAP_ERROR when the record that it is trying to read from the NTFS USN journal is not found.  This can occur because of one of the following reasons.
[1] Volume "\\.\C:" has been formatted.
[2] The NTFS USN journal on volume "\\.\C:" has been deleted.
[3] The NTFS USN journal on volume "\\.\C:" has been truncated. Chkdsk can truncate the journal if it finds corrupt entries at the end of the journal.
[4] File Replication Service was not running on this computer for a long time.
[5] File Replication Service could not keep up with the rate of Disk IO activity on "\\.\C:".
Setting the "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" registry parameter to 1 will cause the following recovery steps to be taken to automatically recover from this error state.
[1] At the first poll, which will occur in 5 minutes, this computer will be deleted from the replica set. If you do not want to wait 5 minutes, then run "net stop ntfrs" followed by "net start ntfrs" to restart the File Replication
    Service.
[2] At the poll following the deletion this computer will be re-added to the replica set. The re-addition will trigger a full tree sync for the replica set.
WARNING: During the recovery process data in the replica tree may be unavailable. You should reset the registry parameter described above to 0 to prevent automatic recovery from making the data unexpectedly unavailable if this error condition occurs again.
To change this registry parameter, run regedit.
Click on Start, Run and type regedit.
    Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    Click down the key path:
       "System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters"
Double click on the value name
       "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore"

The automatic restore process AFAIK will initiate a D2 restore. And if
there's no other DC, sysvol might be gone.
I really would prefer to have control - this means I would do a D4.
    Absolutely I would :)

  • Which role do I need DFS or File server on fail over cluster server 2012 R2?

what I want to achieve is that I want to share all my user data files in a central location and to be highly available all the time whether it's a general share or folder redirection data. BUT I'm a bit confused;  I have fail over cluster  set-up
on server 2012, now I would like to add DFS as a role but than we have another role called File server and virtually it does the same thing as DFS? Means it creates a namespace share that can be access even one of the nodes goes down. Now I am thinking is
that DFS does the replication between two physical location but fail over cluster works slightly differently  and with file server it pretty much does the same thing except for replicating data from one drive to another. Now what do you suggest I do or
did I get the concept wrong like a noob?

DFS and Failover Clustering for file shares provides a similar end result for file access, but they are significantly different implementations.
Clustering provides high availability to files by presenting shared access to set a files served from a cluster.  With 2012 R2 Microsoft added the ability to create a Scale-out File Server that even allows all nodes of the cluster to server access to
the files for a higher level of performance and other great things.  Bottom line with Failover Clusters for files is that there is a single copy of the file presented from the cluster.
DFS on the other hand provides high availability to files by presenting multiple copies of the file by making a copy in two or more locations and presenting a naming space that allows access to the file through any of the network paths.  DFS works very
well for files that are primarily read-only.  When you get into a situation where there is a lot of updating of the shared files, DFS is not a very good solution.  There are ways to implement DFS for read/write files, but it generally requires a
good knowledge of how the files are used and how you want to manage them.
The key to answering your question comes in your first sentence "I want to share all my user data files in a central location and to be highly available all the time".  My initial reaction to this is that central location means Failover Cluster
    - there is only a single copy of the file.  However, "all the time" can be compromised by network failures to the central site.  Remote sites would not have access if they can't access the central site.  DFS provides the ability to
have copies remotely, but then if you allow updating at multiple sites, you have to manage the merging of the changes, among other things.

  • Event ID - 13568 The File Replication Service has detected that the replica set "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" is in JRNL_WRAP_ERROR.

We had a major storm over the weekend which caused an unexpected shutdown.
I am having an issue with one of my domain controller with Event ID 13568
The domain controller which is running Windows Server 2012 was added successfully just a couple of days ago.
I do not have a full backup of the server yet.
It only has a GC role on it.
What are the things I should look out for before I attempt to Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore and set it to 1?
Would it be safer to just demote the server and start from scratch?

  • Windows server 2012 File replication

    Hi All,
I am SQL DBA. But in my current company I am having a new responsibility called IIS Admin.
In my organization, I am instructed to do following activity.
    There is a Live Web server(named X) and a user acceptance test Server(named Y)
There is a folder called "Intranet" in both the servers.
If any changes done in "Intranet" of X(any new files created, updated or deleted.....) it needs to be automatically updated on "Intranet" of Y also. But not Vice versa, it should be one way.
At the same time, we need to do changes on Y also.
Both the servers are installed with windows server 2012(Standard edition).
What mechanism can we use to achieve the above.
Please help me in the regard.

Yes - I connected my phone to my computer / Itunes and went into the apps section, but from there I have no idea how to manage the push notifications.  I even tryied going into itunes that is installed on my phone.  I still cannot find anyplace to manage these popups.  I have also gone into settings - notifiations - and tried turning all notifications for these apps all off but that didnt work either.  Any guidance is MUCH appreciated - Im not sure where to go from here.

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

ZFS can do it. It can do it at specified hours and such. I would highly
recommend Avanti TaskMaster. It'll do a lot more than sync, and it will
sync trustee information, extended attributes, ownership, date/time stamp,
multiple namespaces, etc. It's licensed per server it's installed on.
