DFS-R hub server - which way to make read-only?

Hi all,
This is more of a technical clarification than a problem we're having...
Firstly, we have a bunch of file servers in various EMEA regions, which are set up to replicate back to a central hub server at our UK datacentre in order to take backups. These spoke servers are the only location where the data is changed.
We are in the middle of migrating the hub server over to Windows Server 2008R2, meaning we can use the supported one-way replication method instead of disabling one end of the member connections.
My question is this:
Which member do we need to make read-only? This would have seemed obvious to me, however there is some confusion amongst our systems engineers.
I would have said that you make the spoke member read-only, as you don't want the hub replicating anything back to it. This makes perfect sense to me, but not everyone is so sure.
Could someone please clarify?

I think it is what I want to achieve - many remote spoke/writeable downstream servers talking with one central/hub server so only this hub has the content of them all - but what do You mean saying "configure
your DFS targets ... such that the HubServerB is disabled"? Isn't it by making it read-only?
I've just found this -
Make a Replicated Folder Read-Only on a Particular Member (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd759239.aspx).
Well. There is a clear explanation that users cannot add or change files on read-only replicated folder but all three examples show remote servers as read-only while hub server is always writeable, isn't it?
RODC example is clear - for safety reason no user-made changes are allowed on remote DC but it gets changes from writeable (central/hub) DC/DC's.
Reports files generated and changed only on hub server - OK. But I can imagine an opposite situation where branch offices are responsible for producing and changing reports which are read-only in company's headquarter. Do the remote offices do it all on the
hub server? Then the reports are replicated to remote read-only member servers? What for?
But keeping installation files on remote servers is not understandable for me. I would rather keep them on central/hub server and propagate them to remote servers and make hub server read-only to prevent from backward replication.
I'm not a native English speaker so maybe I don't get the exact sense of this article. Somebody help me, please?

    Hi All,
    How to make read only field in Task list?

    This can be done one of two ways:
    1. Customize the form in Infopath, right click your field and disable the control.
    2. Use JavaScript/jQuery on the page to disable the element.

  • How can I get a birthday reminder from items which are in the read-only cal

    I am looking for a solution to get a reminder message for birtdays which are within the read-only calender imported/updated from he address book. I so far have not found the option where to turn on the reminder and I do not want to duplicate items (ie creating another birthday calender inside iCal).
    Thanks for comments.

    Hi ontour,
    This limitation is one of the many reasons I wrote Dates to iCal. It is a replacement for the Birthdays calendar in iCal, so you would need to turn the Birthdays calendar off in iCal's preferences.

  • Address Book server -- any way to make an account "read-only"?

    So, they'd like to incorporate Address Book Server here to work as a "group" address book.
    But they only want to give certain people read-write access to the group book and read-only address to others.
    As far as I know, there's no way to do this (like you could with an iCal "delegate" for comparison.)
    But I was thinking -- is there some way to just set an AB Server account read-only in general?
    If so, I was thinking I could set up two AB Server accounts -- the "read-write" account for some users and then script/sync the values in that account nightly to a "read-only" account.
    But I can't figure out if there's a way to marke an AB server account read-only to begin with.
    Any suggestions along these lines?
    Thanks!

    I'd imagine this is a question that only Apple can answer, as it would require some "behind the scenes" tinkering with Terminal etc., if it were at all possible.
    Its definitely something they should think about including in a future release, as there seem to be quite a few people here who want a shared calendar, plus therefore the ability to pick who can EDIT vs. just read the info on it.
    Cheers!

  • Way to make Reader Mobile (IOS/Android) to fill in form cells based on input made in other cell?

    Hi, Is there a way to make Acrobat Reader Mobile (IOS/Android) to fill in form cells based on input in another cell?
    I made a timesheet where based on an activity code input in a dropdown box the description corresponding the activity code is displayed automatically in another cell.(see below)
    This is working flawlessly as long as I am using a PC, however does not work on any kind of phone.(I suppose this feature is not supported on Acrobat Mobile yet)
    My question is if anybody can suggest an alternative method for mentioned feature which works also on phones?
    Any suggestion would be much appreciated
    In the Format field:
    if(event.willCommit)
    console.println(event.value);
    switch(event.value)
       case "    1      01":
        this.getField("REMARK1").value = "Offloading";
        break;
       case "    2      01":
        this.getField("REMARK1").value = "Preparation";
        break;
       case "   19     44":
        this.getField("REMARK1").value = "Support-3rd party insp/contract.";
        break;   case " ":
        this.getField("REMARK1").value = " ";
        break;
    Regards: Robert

    Try getting rid of that console.println statement. If that doesn't help, it should work if you convert that from a format script of the dropdown to a calculate script of the REMARK1 field.

  • Is there a way to set read-only on a file manually?

    Is there a secret keypress combo that will allow me to set
    the read-only attribute on files in the file inspector window? I
    can not use the check-in/out function because, IMHO, it is broken.
    Macromedia has given a menu ability to "reset" (turn off) the
    read-only attribute but they left out the "turn on" function. Would
    certainly help me a lot...anyone?
    Thanks!
    p.s. in order to defray wasted back-n-forth postings, here is
    why it is broken:
    1. I run DW8 locally while connected to the network with
    mapped fileserver drives (M:, P:, etc)
    2. I have the default website set up pointing to our
    DEVELOPMENT file server
    3. when I do a PUT the files are FTP'd to a different web
    server for public consumption
    4. the error is that if check-in/out is enabled, the files
    are pulled from the PUBLIC web server instead of just opening them
    from the DEVELOPMENT server like I clicked on...if I wanted to edit
    the live files I would have changed my site pointer to remote
    instead of local (good grief)
    5. this is bad because everyone else in the company uses that
    cr@ppy Frontpage and are constantly editing their division's
    webpages, which are in various stages of readiness. When I edit one
    of those pages I need to be editing the one they have been working
    on, NOT the one that is currently published to the public website!
    DW8 is doing more work than I want it to do by going out and
    grabbing the published page instead of simply opening the one I
    clicked on in the file manager window. That makes NO sense at all,
    and as a developer I certainly wouldn't have programmed it that
    way...

  • Problem when I make Read Only Property True

    Dear Members,
    I have an OAF Page on which I have the below two items:
    1/ item1
    2/ item2
    These two items are message input text items and these two items will always have some value.
    To meet one of my requirement, I am making the READ ONLY property of these two items to TRUE in processRequest method of page CO using PPR Concept. After this when I am trying to access the values of these two parameters in processFormRequest method using pageContext.getParameter method I am getting the Null Pointer Exception error.
    Kindly please help me in resolving the above error.
    Note: I have created a transient variable hdr1Trans and attached this variable to the both the items i.e., item1 & item2
    Code in my processRequest method is as follows:_
    public void processRequest(OAPageContext pageContext, OAWebBean webBean)
    super.processRequest(pageContext, webBean);
    OAApplicationModule am = pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
    OAViewObject pvo = (OAViewObject)am.findViewObject("pprPVO1");
    pvo.setMaxFetchSize(0);
    Row newRow = pvo.createRow();
    pvo.insertRow(newRow);
    OAViewObject vo = (OAViewObject)am.findViewObject("Headers_VO1");
    String status="";
    status=vo.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("Status").toString();
    if(status!=null && !("".equalsIgnoreCase(status)))
    if(status.equalsIgnoreCase("IN PROCESS"))
    pvo.getCurrentRow().setAttribute("hdr1Trans",Boolean.TRUE);
    else if(status.equalsIgnoreCase("NEW"))
    pvo.getCurrentRow().setAttribute("hdr1Trans",Boolean.FALSE);
    Code in my processFormRequest method is as follows:_
    public void processFormRequest(OAPageContext pageContext, OAWebBean webBean)
    super.processFormRequest(pageContext, webBean);
    OAApplicationModule am = pageContext.getApplicationModule(webBean);
    String headerId ="";
    System.out.println("test-1");
    String item1=pageContext.getParameter("item1").toString();
    String item2=pageContext.getParameter("item2").toString();
    I am getting the NPE error when I am trying to access a record with status value IN PROCESS.
    Once I make the read only property to TRUE for both the above 2 items and after that if iam trying to access their value using pageContext.getParameter Iam getting this error.
    Kindly please help me in resolving this error.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Arun Reddy D.

    Arun,
    When you set item as readonly field, it will always show null when you will use pageContext.getParameter("<itemID>").
    If there is a VO attached with these items eg- item1, item2 then you can get the value using below code
    OAViewObject vo = (OAViewObject)am.findViewObject("<Some Vo>");
    String item1=(String) vo.getCurrentRow().getAttribute("<Attribute Name>");Regards,

  • JDev 10.1.2: How to update an attribute which is rendered as read-only

    Hello guys, I hope someone can help me with this, I think it should be something easy to do:
    I have a UIX page which renders an input form to update a record, in this input form I want to display (as read-only) the user id which is performing the update, but I want the record to be updated with the user id. I have the user id available from another binding.
    If I put the input box as editable the attribute is updated, but If I set it read-only it isn't.
    Do you know how can I do this?
    Thank you.

    Ok... I solved it, though I don't think this is the right way.
    SOLUTION:
    I inserted a formValue into the UIX page like this:
    <formValue model="${bindings.AttributeToUpdate}"
    value="${bindings.TheValue}"
    name="VB_AttributeToUpdate" />The formValue name is very important and must start with VB_ followed by the name of the attribute to update. I figured out this by looking at the generated html code when I inserted the "AttributeToUpdate" as an editable inputtext, it uses the VB_ prefix and was the only way to get the attribute updated.
    Thanks anyway, and if someone knows of another way to do this I'd like to know it.
    Bye.

  • Generating EXPLAIN PLAN on a database which is opened in READ-ONLY mode

    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 10.2.0.3 version.
    If my database is opened in READ-ONLY mode, means no insert/update/delete operations are permitted here.
    While generating EXPLAIN PLAN for any SQL, it does entries in PLAN_TABLE. But my database is opened in READ-ONLY mode, means no inserts can happen.
    So how can I generate EXPLAIN PLAN for my SQL in this condition?
    Thanks in advance.

    You can always do: "explain plan into some_table@remote_database" to avoid inserting into the local database. Unfortunately 10g added a sequence fetch to the "explain plan" code, and this is where the call would fail if you tried this remote approach on your version.
    Here's an idea I haven't tested. If you set up a database link from your production database to the read-only database, you could then do an "explain plan" in the production database for the SQL statement by changing every object reference in the SQL statement to "object@readonlydatabase". In most cases this will allow the optimizer to recognise the statement as "fully remote" and get the optimizer on the readonly database to create the execution plan - which would then be written to the production database.

  • Yosemite Server: After upgrade, OD is read-only

    Hello,
    yesterday, I upgraded my server installation to Yosemite and Server 4.0. Although it seemed that everything went fine, a severe problem turned out.
    Symptoms:
    I cannot login to network accounts from other machines, although Directory Services show the right content for each user. Assumption: Kerberos authentication fails for unknown reason.
    Then, I discovered that OD on the Yosemite Server shows all Users and Groups, but I cannot edit any of them; any "change password" or similar context menu options are grayed out.
    I had the "fix permissions" run and reboot, but without any effect.
    As it seems, the /Library/Server path content is considered as read-only for the Server app; this impression is supported by the RADIUS service: When keying "radiusd -X", this is the result:
    Starting - reading configuration files ...
    including configuration file /Library/Server/radius/raddb/radiusd.conf
    Unable to open file "/Library/Server/radius/raddb/radiusd.conf": Permission denied
    Errors reading or parsing /Library/Server/radius/raddb/radiusd.conf
    Any idea how to fix this? I'm not the hardcore sysadmin, so I'd appreciate any kind of help...
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Best regards,

  • Diskless server exports client's /usr read only?

    Hi,
    My diskless server exports the client's /usr as read only. Can someone please tell me the ramifications of exporting it read/write?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    The idea is that you can share a single /usr among several clients. If it's r/w, then one client can disturb the image for others in this configuration.
    If it tried to move or update a shared library, it's likely that programs would crash.
    Root needs to have write access, so each client gets an individual copy that can be modified.

  • Need thread safe way to access read-only objects

    I have been working on a lot of projects and all the developers agree that they want thread safe code when called by many threads. It's rare developers are making statement like: "Data are not corrupted often so don't bother" or "It's not thread safe, but that will not often create issues".
    In TopLink client session itself is thread safe but not the persistent object themselves. Via client session, if you want thread safe access you need to put a lock on CacheKey and it's not a public/supported API. So the only thread safe access is via unit of work.
    We would like fast access to objects. We have a batch process that just need read-only access to objects. We need to read via unit of work to get thread safe access. But we just need the clone when we read via unit of work, we don't need the backup for change detection.
    However, TopLink doesn't have a mean to do that.
    Please push implementation of Bug5998333[WANT THREAD SAFE AND CORRECT ISOLATION WITH OBJECTS FROM ADDREADONLYCLASS]
    In Hibernate, by design, all access are always thread safe. Accessing read-only object just create one copy (a clone), no backup needed.
    Oracle claims that TopLink is fast. I wonder if their performance testing code is thread safe, so access objects via unit of work or they take the shortcut of accessing objects from client session. Also, reliable performance comparison should use conform in unit of work.

    As you stated the UnitOfWork offers you your desired functionality, you would just like an improvement in performance.
    In TopLink 10.1.3 (or 11g preview) you have a few options:
    - Use a UnitOfWork an live with the slight overhead of the back copies (it will only add 5-30 % overhead to your processing)
    - Instead use an isolated client session, this will not require any cloning or backup clones, but also does not allow any caching.
    - Use change tracking, TopLink added attribute-level change tracking in 10.1.3, when used the UnitOfWork does not create backup clones. In 10.1.3 it was mainly used for CMP and requires code generation, but you could implement or weave the code yourself. In TopLink 11g, change tracking is weaved by default with JPA and the weaver can also be used with POJO objects.
    I agree that having a feature to mark an object as transactionally read-only would be desirable, it seems like you have logged the enhancement. You could try escalting the enhancement through Oracle support, but since it is an enhancement and not a bug, it is probably beyond what support offers. You may wish to investigate services, or potentially join the open source Eclipse EclipseLink project which the next version of TopLink is being developed under and take part in the feature yourself.

  • Does anyone know a simple way of creating read-only DMGs from card media?

    We're looking for a simple workflow to copy/archive card media from cameras.
    Can anyone recommend a utility / Droplet / Applescript that will create a read-ony DMG directly from mounted card media?
    Preferably something where the disk name of the DMG can be set when its created.
    Thanks!
    Nick

    Thanks! That's a handy start.
    I'll take a look at the command line options of hdiutil. Ultimately, we're looking for a workflow for non-terminal users so I imagine we'll wrap it up in AppleScript.
    The idea is to make a simple drag+drop process for people shooting digital video to archive card media as read-only  dmgs with custom reel names. Something like...
    - select the card/folder (or drag onto AppleScript)
    - enter name and location of dmg in file dialogue
    - create and verify dmg
    Cheers

  • Which settings for Square reader only?

    I am new to iPhones and Square. I have a Square Reader and the app on an iPhone 4s. I want to use the phone for selling bead jewelry at parties, shows, etc. I don't need any other app or procedure to be running when using Square (so as to conserve battery life).
    I shall be using a wi-fi connection.
    I know how to process a sale, etc. using Square but I don't know how/what to disable on the iPhone. I would appreciate whatever advice can you give me?

    Clyde:
    Upon further research (as suggested by Diesel) it seems that Airplane Mode turns off Wi-Fi, GPS, and Location Services all of which Square needs for processing transactions.
    I can go back in and turn them on, of course. I wanted to clarify in case anyone else had the same question I had.
