DFSRDIAG BACKLOG command switch "/rfname" explanation

Hello experts,
I have setup DFSR between two Windows Server 2012 servers a few months ago and I recently ran into
issues with files not being copied and missing files.
I am looking for some troubleshooting tips to investigate and possibly correct DFSR issues, however
I am completely new to DFS Management in Windows Server 2012.
It is my understanding that I can use the DFSRDIAG BACKLOG command as a good starting point for
troubleshooting:
==================================================
“dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:"Group Name" /rfname:"folder name" /smem:sendingmembername
/rmem:receivingmembername”
==================================================
Sorry for asking a dumb question, but could you please explain the command switch "/rfname"
? Is it supposed to simply contain the DFSR root shared folder (e.g. D:\Data) or one of its subfolders (e.g. D:\Data\Sales) ?
Any help/information will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Massimiliano

Hi Massimiliano,
As the article you provide mentioned, the script cannot be used on Windows server 2012 platform.
Verified on the following platforms
Windows Server 2012
   No
Windows Server 2008 R2
Yes
   Windows Server 2008
Yes
Windows Server 2003
Yes
   Windows 8
No
Windows 7
No
   Windows Vista
No
Windows XP
No
   Windows 2000
No
I do a test on my machine and find if you run the script on Windows Server 2012, it gets Access denied error message. In the meantime, the script can be used on Windows Server 2012 R2 platform.

  • How is this even possible? Folders out of sync. Backlog command says in sync.

Two 2008 R2 servers.  Been running DFS-R for about a year now.  Generally no problems.
If I run the DFSRdiag backlog command on either server, for one particular folder, it says there is no backlog.  The only problem with that is;  on one server there are 11 files in that folder, on the other server, in the same folder, there are
15 files.  How is this even possible!

    Hi,
Please check if DFS Replication filter some special file from replication. For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:

  • Pressing only Command switches applications

Don't know if anyone else is having this problem, or it's a keyboard shortcut of some sort.
Since upgrading to ML, I've been occasionally experiencing the Command key taking over the commands on my computer. I use Command + tab/Q/W a lot. Now, once in a while when I press Command first (and prior to the other keys), it automatically switches over to another application that I didn't choose, usually FInder. But I've had it happen with Evernote, Messages, etc. as well.
It's really frustrating when I can't use the Command + [key] shortcut when pressing Command itself is already doing something, and something it shouldn't be doing.
I hope someone has an answer!

    Try a
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • My keyboard format has option & command switched?

    Howdy,
I just had to perform an archive install on my 10.4.6 powerbook. That took it back to 10.4.3, and then I updated it back to 10.4.6. For some reason, it now thinks that the option key is the command key, and the command key is the option key, like on a windows keyboard. It is an easy fix for my USB keyboard in the System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Modifier Keys panel, but that has no effect on my built-in keyboard. Problem persists regardless of keyboard language. Why is it doing this? DOES it think that it is a windows keyboard?
    Powerbook G4 867   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Funny you should mention that. There is actually a Windows mapping for the keyboard. Here's something on the various modes the keyboard supports.
I just tested this, and the Modifier Keys setting does work for my built in keyboard.

  • X-Fi xgamer fatality pro volume panel command switch?

Looking at msconfig, I noticed that Volume panel starts with an /r switch. Something like this: [color="#ff0000"]C:\Program Files\Creative\Sound Blaster X-Fi\Volume Panel\volpanlu.exe /r.
Now can someone tell me are there any more switches, and what they stand for?
This is a bit weird because in Entertainment mode, when I double click on systray icon Mixer opens instead of Full Entertainment list to choose from CMSS, Mixer, Crystalaizer....etc. So when Mixer opens, I have to click on main display tohave all of the options
I wish that "Main Display" opens instead of Mixer.
    Anyone?

  • What is backlog in DFSR?

What is exactly backlog in DFSR? Is the files that are not replicated yet to the target server or if we change security on a file and this is not finished to replicate can be considered as a backlog too?

What I don't understand the report show me backlogs but when I compare the folder that suppose to contain backlogs there are similar.
For example I run this cmd:
    dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:<REPL_GROUP> /rfname:<REPL_FOLDER> /smem:<SRV_A> /rmem:<SRV_B> [/v]
When I check on one of the folders like:
    \\server01\foldetIT\Tool\ and compare to \\server02\foldetIT\Tool\
Check the files that show in backlog report and they are similar. So my question is what DFSR consider as a backlog if I see the same file (same security, same date and size)?

  • DFSR - backlog and sharing violations

    Hi,
i have a Replication Group Setup with a lot of sharing violations (accessed files) and lately i also saw a list of backlogged files. I also noticed, that a small txt file i created wasnt replicated either. It took a few hours and everything was replicated,
    so in General it works.
My question: is it safe to say, that when having a large amount of sharing violations and backlog files that also normal files will be queued at the end of the Journal/list and not treated with Preference ? Also in normal circumstances those not accessed
files would be replicated very fast, but due to backlogs delayed ?
    thanks for clarification.
    Marcus

    Hi Marcus,
With enough sharing violations though, DFSR can start spending more time retrying locked files than it does replicating unlocked ones, to the detriment of performance.
To determine the real state of the file, use the DFSRDIAG BACKLOG command to check for sharing violations. The command output provides a list of the first 100 files that are not replicated.

  • Files Stuck in DFS Replication Backlog

We have two Windows Server 2012 servers with several different replication groups configured to replicate different folder structures between them. One of these replication groups seems to have a permanent backlog of files stuck in the queue. the "dfsrdiag
backlog" command always shows 343 files waiting to replicate in one direction when run at the end of the day. The first 100 files are listed by the command and they are always the same files. When run during the day the dfsrdiag command shows the backlog
going up to several thousand (with the same first 100 files listed), but it always returns to 343. There is no backlog in the other direction. All other replication groups set up show no backlogs in either directions. There are no errors or warning in the
event logs to say DFS replication has stopped for that particular volume or that the files couldn't be replicated due to sharing violations. I have tried forcing replication and rebooting both servers.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get these files to replicate?

    Hi,
First please check if staging folder is large enough. A recommended size is 1.5x<size of your largest file in replication group>.
Also here is a tuning guide of DFSR. Please see if it could help:

  • DFS on Windows Storage Server 2008R2 Essentials

I have a small NAS-type device running Windows Storage Server 2008R2 in place at a remote site for a client.  This was put in place to replace a failing 2003 domain controller (not my choice for replacement, client did it for cost reasons) that is still
in place as of this writing.  This is my first time working on a WSS machine (and hopefully my last).  DFS replication between the two sites is crucial.  Main site has a 2008R2 Standard DC.
I enabled, via PS commands, DFS on the WSS remote site machine.  I have DFS replication working from the main site
to the WSS box, but it
won't replicate from the WSS box to the main site DC or the still existing 2003 remote site machine.  Any dfsrdiag commands I try to run on the WSS box fail, such as:
    C:\>dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:tcdata /rfname:tcdata /sendingmember:ip-dc2
[ERROR] Cannot find DfsrReplicatedFolderConfig object. Possible reasons:
+ The replicated folder is not configured on the member
+ Access is denied to its configuration information
[ERROR] Replicated folder <tcdata> not found. Err: -2147217406 (0x80041002)
    Operation Failed
I suspect these commands are failing because the WSS box isn't (can't be) a domain controller, but I've no basis for this reasoning.  Is this the case?  I've torn down and recreated the memberships and connections on the WSS box a couple
times to no avail.  Running a "Verify Topology" on the WSS box results in "The topology for replication group TCDATA is fully connected.  Data can replicate throughout the topology."  A propagation report with the WSS box
as the source results in "Arriving Pending".
I'm actually unsure how to troubleshoot this.  Can anyone offer advice other than "don't use WSS"?

    Hi,
It appeared that the configure file was invalid or corrupted. Please try to recreate the replication group to see if it can resolve the issue.

  • DFS replication issue

    Hello,
We have 1 server at branch office and 1 server at datacenter and have DFS-R enabled for user related data. By default we have enabled branch office server DFS path for end users.
Replication was broken some time back since the branch server OS was crashed. We fixed the issue by reinstalling the OS, but unfortunately a month later we found branch server is not replicating the data with its partner datacenter server
as the GUID of the branch server was changed post rebuild. I have removed the old GUID and re-add the branch server to replication group again.
But, I don't see replication is taking place properly still. If I create a new test folder its getting replicated to datacenter server, but not the old folders which have data modified between these broken replication period.
What is the best way solving this? since the over all data size is in TBs.
    Mahi

You can check the backlog on dfs : http://www.planetcobalt.net/sdb/dfscmds.shtml
    Command syntax :
    dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:KeyMaster /rfname:Gatekeeper /sendingmember:DontCrossTheStreams
    /receivingmember:StayPuffed
You may stop sharing and check the results if replication works well.

  • DFSR files missing

    Hello,
i've a 2 dfsr servers. the serve as file servers.
They are not yet in production.
The second server is kind of a backup (i know it's not the way it's supposded to be used ... )
I have overs 5 millions files. Approxiamtively 300 files are missing on server B ! it'not much but i dont understand why...
everything seem to work fine. When i create for example a thousand files on server A they are correctly copied on server B ... no files in the backlog
I found one file, and decided to copy it on server B. For test purpose, i delete this file from A and it wasent deleted on B ...
Is theire a way fo force these 300 files to cpy on B using DFSR and not using a manual operation ?
is there a particular reason why this files are not copied ? (FYI i removed default extension from exculsion )

With that many files, there is probably a large backlog which is causing replication delays.
    Try this command:
    dfsrdiag backlog /rgname:inetpub /rfname:inetpub /sendingmember:server
rgname =  name of replication group, can be checked in dfs management
rfname = name of replicated folder, can be checked in dfs management
sending member = the other server

    Jayrmon,
I'm going through some simliar issues with DFS for the first time.  Try right clicking on your replication group and going to "create diagnostic report" and running a health report to get some more information.
At first glance it looks like the DFSR database might be corrupt.  Was this server recently restored from a snapshot?  I recently had to stop replication, delete the DFSR database, and restart the replication to fix a similar problem.
Also you can try running a "dfsrdiag backlog" command in both directions to find out how many files are waiting in the backlog.  This will also be displayed on the health report.
Here are some good resources I've been reading:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library/cc773238(WS.10).aspx

  • DFSR Error : Error: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled)

    Hello,
We are getting this error on one of our DFSR shares and am not sure how to get this fixed. We have over 30 different shares replicating and all of them are fine except for one. I have tried to remove the Replication and the namespace and have recreated them
    both and continue to get the same error. This is what is in the event logs on the server;
The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the replicated folder at local path E:\SHARE\Sharelocation.
    Additional Information:
Error: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled)
    Additional context of the error:
    Replicated Folder Name: Sharelocation
    Replicated Folder ID: 9BDA3E5A-8103-481F-84B2-269AE8A3BBC8
    Replication Group Name: SHARE
    Replication Group ID: C25E73B7-5B65-4299-A1BE-76E723443B02
    Member ID: 568CC517-3329-42A4-ABAD-633CB3D1EF2E
If anyone has any suggestion on how to get this working again it would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a short summary of what I did:
Look in Event Viewer and identify all the replication groups/folders that are giving the tombstone error. Once you have them identified, go into DFS Management GUI and completely delete the replication group
associated with that folder. You do not need to delete the DFS Namespace for that folder, just the replication functionality of that namespace folder. If you have other replication groups in your DFS-R that do not get the 9098 errors, then you do not have
to do this for these folders.
Stop DFSR services (you may need to kill the service using the taskkill command if it hangs when it tries to stop).
Give yourself permissions to the hidden System Volume Information folder. If you're account is under the domain admins group, you can simply add the security group.
This folder exists on all servers that is a member of the replication group. In my situation, 2 of the 3 servers didn't show this folder as existing even when I enabled to see hidden folders. If this happens to you,
the server is lying to you that it's not there. It is there. Don't listen to it. My suggestion is to download and use the 7-zip file manager. It will see the folder and will help you set the permissions to
it as well as delete files that are longer than 256 characters, which is an issue if you do the next step from the command line).
Note, after you set the permissions, it might tell you that you still don't have access to that folder. Just close out of 7-zip and open it back up. It should let you in that folder as well as its subfolders.
Once you have access to that folder, go ahead and delete the DFSR folder that resides underneath it. You will want to do this on all servers that has the DFSR role installed and is a member to any replication
groups. You can use the command line command "rmdir", but it fails to delete files/folders that are longer than 256 characters. This is why the 7-zip file manager is a better option to delete the DFSR folder under System Volume Information. However,
there are instances where 7-zip is unable to delete a file or folder. If you run in that scenario, use the rmdir command in an elevated command prompt. Essentially, a combination of these two will eventually clear out everything you need to clear out.
Turn DFSR services back on. This will begin the process of recreating the DFSR hash and virtual tree that you had just deleted.
Recreate the replication group that you want.
On the replication groups that you did not delete, you may get the warning: "The DFS Replication service initialized the replicated folder at local path <path> and is waiting to perform initial
replication. The replicated folder will remain in this state until it has received replicated data, directly or indirectly, from the designated primary member."
If you do, what you need to do is run the command line to set one of the DFSR servers as the primary server for that replication group, and then once set - this
is important - you will have to go in the DFS Management GUI, click on the replication group with the associated warning, select the connections tab, and then right click the the sending member that
you just made as primary and choose "Replicate now..." This will initialize the replication and you will have to do this just that once for it to replicate here on out. You will need to do choose the "Replicate now..." option for each receiving
member that the sending member/primary member server is attached to in that replication group.
Wait about 5-10 minutes and run the dfsrdiag backlog command on each replicationgroup and see if a backlog for replication/sync gets created. Run this command each 5 to 10 minutes to see if the backlog file count value decreases. If it does, it's syncing/replicating.
Don't forget that when testing replication, you cannot create test files via the local path and see if it replicates. You must create it in the DFS Namespace (\domain\folder\share) to see if replication works. Otherwise
you get false negatives and you think replication is still broken. Just an FYI.

On Switch 1 when i attemp to create VSS, I get the following:sw
    Switch(config)#switch ?
    % Unrecognized command
    Switch(config)#switch
is this switch set in a particular mode that's preventing or do i have a bad code loading.. ? please advise..
    Thanks

After taking a look at the current IOS on the switch I do not see VSS mentioned in the release notes. You may need to move up to a newer IOS version to solve this issue. The very next IOS 3.4.4SG seems to support VSS.
