DG4ODBC

Hi all,
I have Oracle 11gR2 on my laptop.
We have SQLServer on our Win2003 Server.
Can I setup DG4ODBC in my laptop to connect to SQLServer database ?
Or does it require to have the databases on the same server?
Thanks.

Hi,
Setting up the DSN is a Microsoft utility, nothing to do with Oracle itself.
Briefly -
- open the Control Panel
- click on Administrative Tools
- open Data Sources (ODBC)
- open the System DSN option
- click on 'Add'
- choose a SQL*Server driver and follow the steps to configure it to connect to your remote SQL*server database
Once that works then you can use it as the HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO parameter in your DG4ODBC configuration file.
See these notes in My Oracle Support for further details -

If you don't have access to My Oracle Support then you will need to talk to who ever administers access in your company.

Mike

  • Problem with DG4ODBC and MSSQL

    Oracle 11g XE, Apex 4.2.3 with DG4ODBC connecting to MSSQL Express on Windows 7.
    The above configuration gives poor performance (slow or no response).
    Simple queries work - "select itemname from tablea@dblink"
    Minor complex queries (and above ??) do not work - "select a.itemname from tablea@dblink a, tableb@dblink b where a.id=b.id"
    Important other information:
    On the same machine there is a Windows 7 VM running with Oracle 10g XE, Apex 4.1.1- with HSODBC connecting to the MSSQL Express  on the host.
    The application has a page with multiple regions and more complex queries (join, count, in list) and it loads normally.
    There are none of the issues experienced with the 11g/4.2 mix.
    Is there a tweak/patch to make the 11g/4.2 function as well as the 10g/4.1 (will settle for equal performance) ?

    Sounds like there are lots of moving parts there.
    All bits running on the same host? Hope its got plenty of memory ... using NAT or a bridging setup for the VM NIC(s)?
    So in the XE guest, there is a tnsalias with an ...HS=OK... stanza? And listener running at the Express host with the dg4odbc setup?
    Is there much difference in timing for a tnsping <tnsalias> and a sqlplus ... conn <user>@tnsalias with set timing on?

  • Tnsping timed out using dg4odbc from Oracle to MYSQL through ODBC

    Hi,
    I encountered problem when trying to connect from Oracle to MYSQL using dg4odbc, hope you can shed some light
    Oracle database is 11.1.0.7 on SUSE Linux 64-bit.
    Since the application which runs on MYSQL DB only offers ODBC driver on Windows platform, so I installed the 32-bit ODBC driver (from ServiceNow) on a 32-bit windows server (driver download from http://wiki.service-now.com/index.php?title=ODBC_Driver) .
    created system DSN: MYSQLDEV, The DSN connection works fine. I then installed Oracle 11.2.0.1 gateway for ODBC 32-bit on the same windows server, the following configurations were done:
    On 32-bit Windows server:
    in gatewayHome\hs\admin
    initMYSQLDEV.ora:

    I don't know why only the tnsping from Linux failed, is it due to the 32-bit ODBC uncompatibility with 64-bit oracle server? or my configuration problem?
    Of course, when I created the DB link from oracle, the connection failed with

  • PL/SQL: ORA-00904: invalid identifier (DG4ODBC 11.2.0.2 & MySQL)

    I have a PL/SQL script processing information between Oracle database and MySQL database. My script ran perfectly with DG4ODBC 11.1.0.7. Then we upgraded Oracle to 10.2.0 and DG4ODBC 11.2.0.2. Now if I run my script from Solaris command line like ./myscript.shl, I get the following errors:
    PL/SQL: ORA-00904: "cmswhit_moodle1"."mdl_grade_grades"."finalgrade": invalid identifier
    PL/SQL: ORA-00904: "cmswhit_moodle1"."mdl_question_states"."attempt": invalid identifier
    The strange thing is if I run the same query by cut and paste into sqlplus from command line, the query works perfectly without any problems.
    What is the cause of this problem?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Jeffrey

    Hi Klaus,
    The problem was solved after I updated MySQL ODBC to a new version from 5.1.8 to 5.1.13.
    Summary of the problem and its solution:
    The Problem: It appears that dg4odbc 11.2.0.2 requires a newer version of MyODBC. Previously I used MyODBC 5.1.8 which ran into problems with dg4odbc 11.20.0.2.
    The Solution: After I updated MyODBC to 5.1.13, my PL/SQL scripts all work.
    I need to point out that with MyODBC 5.1.8, I can run queries and updates from SQL*Plus console, but now PL/SQL scripts.
    I'll close this thread.
    Once again, thank you and happy holidays.
    Jeffrey

  • Dg4odbc to MySQL update errors: "does not support IS NULL in this context"

    I am having a problem with 'where x is null' clauses in update statements to MySQL from 11g, using dg4odbc. Updates using the clause 'where x is null' return errors like this:
    ORA-02070: database PLAZAHOST does not support IS NULL in this context
    The rejected queries never get to mysql. Furthermore, I noticed that select statements with 'where x is null' show up in the mysql query log with the where clause stripped out, although correct results are returned to SQLPlus. It looks as though 'where x is null' is stripped off by dg4odbc, which subsequently applies a secondary filter to the results received from MySQL.
    Note, both statements above work properly when issued from the MySQL client.
    Has anybody seen this? It's a big problem for me, but I can't find any references to other people having the same problem, so I assume I've got something misconfigured -- but I don't know what.
    I'm using MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver, MySQL 5.1 Community Edition, and Oracle 11g R1 all running on a 32-bit Windows server.
    Thank you -- rick

    is null statement is post processed. This means in case of a select ALL records from the remote database are fetched into the Oracle database and the is null statement is then processed locally in the Oracle db.
    So thze select will work as it is handled internally in the Oracle database. This also means as But "is null" isn't sent to the foreign MySQL db the update clause will fail with ORA-02070: database PLAZAHOST does not support IS NULL in this context
    You need to recode the statement or use passthrough statements.

  • Dg4odbc 11.2 to mysql desc table issue, query return only one record

    <h2>Hi,
    I have the following set up:
    11g R2 RAC oracle database, dg4odbc 11.2, UnixODBC 2.3 driver manager, MySQL ODBC 5.1.7 Driver on 64 bit Suse SLES 11 server.
    Remote database MySQL version 5.0.67 running on 32 bit linux server.
    I am having the following Issues:
    1. When desc table, sometimes only the first field is shown:
    SQL> desc sub_index@mybilltracker;
    Name Null? Type
    subject_id NOT NULL NUMBER(20)
    SQL> desc "sub_index"@mybilltracker;
    Name Null? Type
    subject_id NOT NULL NUMBER(20)
    Some other times I am able to see the correct table definition:
    SQL> desc "sub_index"@mybilltracker;
    Name Null? Type
    subject_id NOT NULL NUMBER(20)
    sess_id NUMBER(10)
    sess_yr NUMBER(10)
    subject_name VARCHAR2(255)
    SQL> desc sub_index@mybilltracker;
    Name Null? Type
    subject_id NOT NULL NUMBER(20)
    2. Select count(*) returns the total number of rows correctly. Select * or Select "field name" from table returns only one row:
    SQL> select count(*) from "mbt_user"@mybilltracker;
    COUNT(*)
    2
    SQL> select "user_id", "email" from "mbt_user"@mybilltracker; _(always return only one record!)_
    user_id email
    1 [email protected]
    Has anybody seen this? Can somebody help me pinpoint the problem? Thank you!

  • Dg4odbc to sql 2000

    Hi,
    I recently setup the oracle 11g gateway on a win2003 server and had success using it to connect to a mysql database. I am running into problems though connecting to ms sql servers.
    Detailed setup:
    installed dg4odbc on a win2003 box
    listner.ora on win2003 box:
    LISTENER =
    (ADDRESS_LIST=
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=oragw.mydomain.com)(PORT=1521))
    SID_LIST_LISTENER=
    (SID_LIST=
    (SID_DESC=
    (SID_NAME=SQL2000)
    (ORACLE_HOME=c:\oracle\product\11.1.0\tg_1)
    (PROGRAM=dg4odbc)
    (SID_DESC=
    (SID_NAME=SQL2008)
    (ORACLE_HOME=c:\oracle\product\11.1.0\tg_1)
    (PROGRAM=dg4odbc)
    (SID_DESC=
    (SID_NAME=MYSQL)
    (ORACLE_HOME=c:\oracle\product\11.1.0\tg_1)
    (PROGRAM=dg4odbc)
    configured a file called initSQL2000.ora:
    # This is a sample agent init file that contains the HS parameters that are
    # needed for the Database Gateway for ODBC
    # HS init parameters
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = sql2000
    # Environment variables required for the non-Oracle system
    #set <envvar>=<value>
    configured the odbc(driver version is 2000.86.3959.00) for SQL Server as follows:
    name: SQL2000
    description: SQL2000
    server: SQL01
    With Windows NT authentication using the network login ID
    connect to SQL Server to obtain default setting for the additional configuration options
    Use ANSI quoted identifiers
    Use ANSI nulls, padding and warnings
    Perform translation for character data
    I then changed who the gateway server was running as to a domain account called gateway. I then granted the gateway user access to the appropriate databases(verified this by logging in to the databases as the new domain gateway user).
    I then created the DB link from our oracle server(10gR2 under RHEL) using the following:
    tnsnames.ora:
    SQL2000=
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (HOST = oragw.llewellyn.com)
    (PORT = 1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID=SQL2000)
    (HS=OK)
    CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK SQL2000 CONNECT TO "gateway" IDENTIFIED BY "gateway_password" USING 'SQL2000';
    I then tested basic functionality:
    select * from dual@SQL2000;
    works fine
    SELECT * FROM all_objects@SQL2000 returns zero rows though.
    Trying to select from any actual tables results in
    SQL Error: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
    [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid object name 'FSSD'.[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Statement(s) could not be prepared.
    Any suggestions?

    Thank you for the tip.
    I verified that the gateway user(domain account) does have access to the "ConquestDB" database by logging into the SQL server using enterprise manager and running queiries.
    I ran the following sql from my oracle database.
    select * from "ConquestDB"."pb_tblTrxType"@SQL2000
    which resulted in
    Error at Command Line:1 Column:27
    Error report:
    SQL Error: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

  • Error with DG4ODBC while setting up connectivity from oracle to IBM iSeries AS400 version V7R1

    Hi,
    I have Enterprise linux 64-bit hosting Oracle 11gR2 64-bit (11.2.0.1) database.  I have access to IBM iSeries AS400 version V7R1.  I am trying to connect to IBM iSeries from Oracle Database through ODBC connectivity using Database Link.  The following is what I have done.
    On the Database (Linux) host Installed iSeriesAccess-7.1.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm provided by IBM.
    my odbcinst.ini has the following entries:

    I have looked up the errors on Oracle forums and could not get any valuable help anywhere.
    Can someone kindly help out where I am going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Ram.

    Hello kgronau,
    Thank You very much for your recommendations.  I removed the parameter HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = 255.
    I added HS_FDS_FETCH_ROWS=1 and also HS_NLS_NCHAR = UCS2
    Tested my sql statement, which yielded the result as follows:
    SQL> select * from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink;
    select * from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
    ㈵″㠵6
    SO I thought I would give a try of removing the line HS_NLS_NCHAR = UCS2
    and again tested my sql statement and it worked like a charm!!!!
    I tested a count(*) and got the results back.
    SQL> select count(*) from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink;
      COUNT(*)
           600
    I really appreciate your valuable pointers and help.
    Thanks once again!!!
    Ram.

  • HS_TRANSACTION_MODEL / Is DG4ODBC capable of SQL_DATA_SOURCE_READ_ONLY?

    We're currently using READ_ONLY_AUTOCOMMIT as setting for HS_TRANSACTION_MODEL in attempt to minimize potential for locking in remote database. Nevertheless, read locks are created with DG4ODBC use by default and persist within remote database for duration of long-running queries which makes use of READ_ONLY_AUTOCOMMIT prohibitive in our environment. Is there a way to totally disable use of transaction model for DG4ODBC to achieve "pure read only" access. In other words, is it possible to change interaction between DG4ODBC agent and ODBC driver in a way that prevents creation of read locks within remote UniVerse 10.1 database?
    It would be ideal for interaction between DG4ODBC agent and ODBC driver to emulate MS Excel/ MS Query interaction that occurs using same ODBC driver as is used for DG4ODBC configuration. When accessing remote data source using MS Excel / MS Query, there is no locking on remote server whatsoever. I've performed a couple different types of ODBC traces and some differences that seem relevant/noteworthy between Excel and DG4ODBC are listed below:
    Excerpts from Excel / MS Query ODBC trace:
    ===========================
    SQLSetConnectOption
         0x01010000
         SQL_LOGIN_TIMEOUT
         0x2D000000
         SQL_SUCCESS
    SQLDriverConnect
         0x01010000
         0xF8070200
         [16]DSN=dsn.ODBC;
         SQL_NTS
         [16]DSN=dsn.ODBC;
         1024
         16
         SQL_DRIVER_COMPLETE
         SQL_SUCCESS
    SQLGetInfo
         0x01010000
         SQL_DATA_SOURCE_READ_ONLY
         [1]N
         2048
         1
         SQL_SUCCESS
    Reference to "SQL_DATA_SOURCE_READ_ONLY above seems indicative of behavior I would like DG4ODBC to emulate. There is no such reference within ODBC trace output for DG4ODBC test:
    Excerpts from DG4ODBC trace:
    ===================
    SQLSetConnectOption
         0x01010000
         SQL_AUTOCOMMIT
         SQL_AUTOCOMMIT_ON
         SQL_SUCCESS
    SQLDriverConnect
         0x01010000
         0x00000000
         [36]DSN=dsn.ODBC;UID=userid;PWD=password;
         SQL_NTS
         [36]DSN=dsn.ODBC;UID=userid;PWD=password;
         1024
         36
         SQL_DRIVER_NOPROMPT
         SQL_SUCCESS
    References above to "SQL_AUTOCOMMIT" and "SQL_AUTOCOMMIT_ON" in the case of DG4ODBC seem in line with current READ_ONLY_AUTOCOMMIT setting for HS_TRANSACTION_MODEL and default DG4ODBC behavior where a transaction is set even for "read only" access to FDS (foreign data source).
    In one other ODBC trace I performed the following error is reported which seems related to DG4ODBC default behavior / HS_TRANSACTION_MODEL:
    UCI SQLExecute() returned -1
    SQLSTATE : S1000 Native Error : 950151 [U2][SQL Client][UNIVERSE]UniVerse/SQL: Isolation levels are not supported for file types 1, 19 and 25
    Facility: DBCAPERR Severity: ERROR Error ID: 46 Extern error: 950151 Message: UCI Error. Func: SQLExecute(); State: S1000; uniVerse code: 950151; Msg: [U2][SQL Client][UNIVERSE]UniVerse/SQL: Isolation levels are not supported for file types 1, 19 and 25.
    So while nature and effect of locking that occurs in FDS may be largely dependent on architecture and conventions associated with foreign data source, it certainly seems possible to achieve "pure read only" access to remote data source with ODBC driver we're using by altering behavior/calls to driver issued by client/agent. MS Excel / MS Query as client/agent exhibits desired behavior. Is it possible to alter behavior of DG4ODBC agent in some way to achieve same end result?
    Overall, results of DG4ODBC tests so far have been very promising but this issue of locking is turning out to be a real problem for large files and, hence, long running queries for our environment in the way of making this a viable/practical option for production use.
    Any help with achieving SQL_DATA_SOURCE_READ_ONLY with DG4ODBC would be greatly appreciated!!

    insert into target_table select * from source_table@dg4odbc_sid;
    create table target_table as (select * from source_table@dg4odbc_sid);However, this is the general form currently in use for daily ETL operation that executes automatically via crontab, shell & sql/plus scripts for a number of tables scheduled thus far:
    begin
    etl_&1;
    end;
    /Anonymous PL/SQL block of form shown above executes stored procedure for respective source/target table identified by parameter &1 passed to SQL/Plus script. Assuming a value for parameter &1 of "target_table", for instance, the definition for procedure etl_target_table referenced as etl_&1 above would be:
    create or replace
    procedure etl_target_table as
    begin
    insert into target_table select * from target_table@dg4odbc_sid;
    commit;
    end;I adopted this convention at present to eliminate code redundancy and to provide additional control needed in the case of a couple tables that call for additional filtering via a WHERE clause to exclude problematic rows or that require explicit list of items on SELECT as opposed to '*' to eliminate columns on remote system containing problematic data. I'm pointing this out because I suspect use of PL/SQL here may have a bearing on ability to accomplish stated objective prompting this thread. Most important thing is to somehow eliminate locking on remote system. I would rework structure of programming and scripting in whatever way is necessary to accomodate a purely read-only transaction model and DG4ODBC behavior that eliminates creation of transaction and, hence, locks created in remote UniVerse database.
    General approach outlined above is in place and working ok for a series of smaller tables each of which only takes seconds or a few minutes to extract into corresponding Oracle tables. There are a number of larger tables in remote system that take much longer to scan for extraction. Locking invariably occurs for these larger tables and persists for duration of statement execution causing production users/processes of remote system to wait.
    Also, if locks already exist for any of the remote tables at the time DG4ODBC extraction begins then the DG4ODBC process may fail with this error:
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
    [Rocket U2][UVODBC][2701121]Error ID: 39 Severity: ERROR Facility: DBCAPERR -
    Serialization failure. {40001,NativeErr = 950261}
    ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from DSNThis excerpt is provided from UniVerse ODBC guide which seems to explain "serialization" error above:
    "Serialization failure. The transaction to which the prepared statement belonged was terminated to prevent
    deadlock. Error ID: 39, Severity: ERROR, Facility: DBCAPERR"So hopefully this provides additional insight into complexion of problem we're having and why we wish to change default behavior of DG4ODBC in this context; ie., prevent setting transaction that in turn causes locks in remote database when all we wish to do is retrieve data from FDS as is performed by other client tools such as Excel or MS Query using same ODBC DSN on which DG4ODBC configuration is based.
    Use of DG4ODBC is actually working out better than any other alternative I've tried thus far for extraction to perform more complex data analysis business calls for than UniVerse "multivalue" datastore allows so I hope there's something that can be done that allows us to continue using Oracle and DG4ODBC approach. Thanks for your assistance!

    Did you check with the ODBC test utility isql (it is installed by default when you install the unixODBC Driver manager) if your ODBC driver can connect at all to that named instance? I have some doubts that it will work either as there was a blog commented by a MS engineer:
    Introducing the new Microsoft ODBC Drivers for SQL Server - Microsoft SQLNCli team blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
    who states that named instance connections are not supported using that driver.

  • Dg4odbc, unixODBC, freeTDS - connection problems to MS SQL 2008

    I am trying to set up a database link between my 64bit Oracle 11g running on CentOS 6.2 and my MS SQL 2008 server running on MS Windows server 2003. I have installed the following -

    I have successfully configured ODBC and freeTDS so that I can connect using isql and query my MSSQL database. The problem I am having is connecting Oracle to MSSQL, I am sure it is a simple configuration error but I have been going round in circles with this and hope someone can help!

    right - I can tnsping my hscerm instance and that returns ok so I'm fairly sure the configuration is fine for both tnsnames.ora and listener.ora. I can isql connect to the ODBC defined name for the the MSSQL database. but when I create a database link in Oracle and then test it I get the following trace output :-

    Now I can clearly see the error "Data source name not found, and no default driver specified" which according to all the documentation means that the entry HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=CERM does not match the entry in my odbc.ini file ([CERM]) but for the life of me I can;t see why they don;t match ??
    Any help greatly received.

    Yeah I verified with isql but I have changed the odbc.ini file as you suggested -

  • DG4ODBC (11.2 g) on LINUX 64bit using FreeTDS ODBC Driver Manager

    Hi,
    I got a problem to connect via dg4odbc using usind database link. Below I've listed all my configuration files + dg4odbc trace output.
    This is what I've already done:
    1. Configured FreeTDS with odbc (see below)
    2. I did some test using odbc.ini using isql,tsql and all were succeed :)
    3. Configured three files initMSSQL.ora, listener and tnsnames
    4. tnsping tns_entry also was succeed (HS=OK)
    But when I created public dblink (CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK hslink CONNECT TO "dbuser" IDENTIFIED BY "dbpassword" using 'my_tns entry') i cannot use it becouse it shows me errors listed in dg4odbc file.
    Please see my configuration and help me tu figure out what I could done wrong or missmatch something !!!!!!!!!!!!

    I would like to add little more info to my post 1 . The listner.ora shown there is of 10g database . I have 2 listeners configured there one listening to port 1521 and another listening to port 1522 .
    2)if i add another listener for my gateway , configure it in gateway home , should i use a differnet - third port .
    3)I already added a listener using gateway netmgr
    4)

  • Database link from Oracle 11g (64 bit) to MySQL over UnixODBC with dg4odbc

    Hello,
    I want to connect to a MySQL Database from Oracle over a database link, but i get always the Error Message ORA-28528: Heterogeneous Services datatype conversion error .
    In the forum or internet I can't find a solution for my problem, so I try now to post this problem.
    Here a detailed description of the problem:
    I use a Oracle 11.1.0.7.0 64bit database which is running on a redhat linux 5.3 64bit.
    I want to connect to a MySql Database 5.0, which is running on a redhat linux 5.2 32bit over unixODBC.
    The configuration from the ODBC seems to be good, because with isql on the ora server I can connect and query all data correct from the MySQL database.
    Also the tsnnames.ora and listener.ora should be configured correctly. The tnsping works also fine.
    But when i try to catch the data over SQLPlus with the database link I always get the error ORA-28528.
    If I try to select just one column it works, but the returned data are incomplete or truncated.
    the version of my libs:
    between mysql and odbc I use libmyodbc3.so version 3.51.12-2.2 (I also tried the version 5, but with them I get a segmentation fault error on isql).
    between odbc and dg4odbc I use libodbc.so version 2.2.11-7.1
    Has anybody a solution or hint for me?
    Many Thanks in advance,
    best regards from Austria
    Manuel
