DHCP DNS
I've got WRT54G2 and have LAN and Wireless clients. LAN clients get routers IP as DNS server via routers DHCP server. Wireless clients get ISPs DNS server via the same DHCP server!? How is that possible? I don't want any clients to send requests directly to ISPs DNS server.
Any suggestions?

Now thing got worse. Wired computer now got ISPs DNS also. (Maybe because the wired computer was connected before the router connected to the internet for the first time).
There is no static DNS entries on any clients.
Wireless clients connect to my router.
I'll tray to find appropriate firmware and flash the router. FYI, my country isn't listed. In the meantime I've done listing those commands:

SBS 2011 no longer issues DHCP leases: DHCP, DNS, and AD Errors
Hi all. On early 8/13/2012 and into the morning, our UPS failed several times. The battery seems to be fine but the unit was shutting off power to the unit which means the (Windows SBS 2011 Standard) server shut off unexpectedly several times.I replaced
the UPS.
Now I'm trying to figure out what in the world this did to the server. It seems DHCP, DNS, and AD all have issues, as seen in the logs below. The client PC's are going offline one-by-one because the leases are expiring and it can't connect to the server
to renew. When trying to start the DHCP service, I get a 20013 error saying it cannot be started.
So I attempted to follow a kb article and repair the database but that didn't work because it seems the Jetpack utility is not in SBS 2011? And even at that, I'm thinking it may not even be a corrupted DHCP database due to the other errors in the event log.
This is a small office and I only know enough to be dangerous but usually I can just follow a kb to fix any issues. But there are so many errors, this one has me stumped.. Could any Server whizzes identify the big picture here?

Internet DHCP/DNS issues with WRT1900ac
I've had a WRT1900ac now for about 2 weeks and the problems seem to be escalating. Need help. And yes, I've already read dozens of threads about these issues and nothing seems to be working.
Most of the problems seem to be centered around this DHCP/DNS issue that so many have been reporting.
First, the symptoms:
Galaxy S4 phones when connected via wifi have some apps that don't update (facebook and google play)
Some computers (both Win 7) will connect to the network just fine, both wired and wireless - but won't be able to get to the internet
I've spent the last 2-3 days of my life reading forums and trying all sorts of things to get this to work properly (like my old router) and I'm still stuck. Some things I've tried:
Firmware is up-to-date (latest version: 1.1.8.164461)
Manually assigned static DNS in router config settings (connectivity -> local network) to various combinations including the router address, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76 (I have comcast), OpenDNS addresses, etc. I read that the router address is not needed, so I stopped including it.
I manually assigned IPs and DNS on the Galaxy S4 phones and that seemed to work... but also seems unnecessary.
I've reserved DHCP addresses on the computers in question, that didn't seem to work, I also manually set DNS on one of the comupters (can't on the other... long story/not my computer) and that worked for a while and then stopped working.
The only way to get one of the computers on the internet now is to turn on the guest network (even though the computer is hard wired to the router), connect, and then the wired network works. No clue why this is, but my guess is that it needs the guest network for DNS, then it fails back over to the wired network. Once that happens, I can actually turn off the wifi on the computer and everything works great... until I reboot. Key point: I can't change any settings on that box other than entering in SSID/passphrase info for the wireless connection. I can connect to the regular (non-Guest) wifi just fine - I just can't ever get to the internet.
I've tried massaging DHCP settings on the router until I'm blue in the face - Static DNS, reserving DHCP addresses, hell I even put one of the computers in the DMZ to see if that would work and it still can't connect to the internet (it's worth noting that with my old router, Linksys WRT310N, the setup was literally plug-and-play - no hassle with any of this).
I've tried countless router reboots, factory resets, turning off my modem and router for 2+ minutes, and nothing is working.
I even read somewhere that if you modify your DHCP settings at all that the WRT1900ac stops doing DNS properly and breaks, so I even tried several "hard" factory resets and used all the default DHCP/DNS settings. And it worked... for a few hours.
Seriously, I'm at my wit's end. I'm out a lot of money on this thing and it's been one headache after another. Please help.I think for most people its a bad idea to hold out that hope, lol. It seems like a great piece of hardware but if you really need a router and don't want to have to 'play' with it, its probably not a good choice. I have an EA6900 that I am very happy with but it has the same restrictions as far as DNS and I really hate the idea that I am forced to use the smartwifi portal. I would really like for them to give me a choice of the old gui or the new one and let ME decide. Lots of routers to choose from out there now and new ones seem to be coming out all the time so do some reading and see if something suits you better. Good luck!

1636 instead of 636 to connect to the Edir side of the server.
Don't try to use port 389 (or 1389 on a DSfW server) as this does only
work on servers which are specifically configured to allow that.

When you come in via VPN I send clients to the windows server for DHCP/DNS info and records get created in the FLZ and RLZ. When folks disconnect from VPN those records in both FLZ and RLZ get purged instantly. When your on wired and disconnect those records in both zones do not get purged. I have my VPN scope and wired scope setup exactly the same. I'm new to managing DNS and DHCP and know there's a lot to learn but it seems odd that when leaving a VPN session those records fall off right away. I'm not sure if the ASA has something to do with it or the anyconnect client itself.

Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS Migration from 2008 r2 to 2012 Essentials
I would like to migrate Domain Controller, DHCP, and DNS functions to a new 2012 Essentials server in a 2008 r2 domain. I would like the 2008 r2 server to remain as applications server. Is it possible to do this? I've seen in TechNet
a reference to this type of migration, but am concerned about the reference that after 21 days the 2008 will shut down. Is it that the server will shut down or the Domain Controller function on the 2008 will shut down? I will need the 2008 setup as is
for our application server, so I want to be sure that the migration will not interfer with that.As long as your existing server is not also an SBS or other Essentials server, it'll be fine. The shutdown after 21 days occurs when multiple SBS or Essentials servers are on the same domain.

Private and Public Networks with DHCP, DNS, AD-DS
Hello, I am a student working on creating a server lab at school and am curious if it is possible to set up a unique testing environment. I will describe what I am trying to achieve below.
I have roughly 15 servers inside of my school lab and want to learn some solid skills as I go out into the workforce. The server lab will utilize one server specifically as a AD-DS, DHCP, and DNS Server and another as a TFPT / Terminal Services Server. This
so that I can set up the rest of the servers as a PXE boot environment (This may not be practical in the real world, but want to get some experience with it.) In order to do this I am using a private network that I have created with the networking equipment
I have (Cisco 1800 Series Router, Cisco 2950 Series Switches) inside of the lab, but need to make sure that the servers in the lab can NOT talk to the rest of the world on the school network that will be plugged into the second NIC. This is so that I can download
windows updates from the school network and hopefully apply them through Windows PowerShell (Is this possible?) to the servers in the private lab network.
I am curious if it is possible to set up a AD-DS, DHCP, and DNS server so that it only communicates through one port and not talk to the rest of the world, as well as if it is possible to create a PowerShell script to check for Windows Updates on the school
network, download them, and then distribute them to the servers inside of the lab environment?

A simple implementation can be done with what can be called a 'jump server'. That server is the only machine in your environment that has access to the internet. You must log into it first
before you have access to your lab environment. It's basically how I set up my lab.
The jump server can also host Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This is a no-cost capability from Microsoft that can automatically download patches from Microsoft. I then use a group policy in my lab domain to set the update server of my
domain to point at the WSUS server. If fact, this sort of configuration is quite common in corporate environments, too. It ensures that corporate machines are not going out to the internet to download patches, allowing the corporate managers to
download and test the patches to see if they break anything before deploying to the rest of the corporate machines as a whole. So the jump server has one IP address that is routable to the internet and a second network on your lab's domain network.
The jump server does NOT run any routing software, so no machine from the lab can access the external network.

Brief HOWTO: subnet with DHCP, DNS and forwarding
I finally took some time today to learn how to set up a DHCP server for ad-hoc direct wired connections and ended up with DNS and subnet forwarding too. I have posted a summary along with a launcher script here.
I would be interested in feedback from users with more network configuration experience. Are there any glaring security holes or stupid mistakes in my setup? If not, I plan to add links to the relevant articles in the wiki as I would have liked more concrete examples when I was setting this up. I felt like I was just cobbling together bits and pieces from different sources and it took some trial and error to get forwarding working right with limited permissions.

I already realize that I can tie it down further by specifying source ranges for incoming traffic from the wired subnet.

As far as the problems go, time to logon to server > 5 minutes. Group Policy issues abound. DNS issues (as mentioned). Thought I had an easy one for you. Sorry about that.
I have one client computer running Windows 7x64 (call it My Workstation) that I back the server and other client PC's up to. The clients have no problem, but after a day or two, the server can no longer "see" the My Workstation and the backup fails.
But then when I reboot the My Workstation, the server "sees" it again!
Furthermore, I backup a 10TB RAID 6 array on
My Workstation to yet another client for redundancy (Call it WORKSTATION2-PC), but if I try to click on the computer icon in Windows Explorer for WORKSTATION2-PC, I get the error "Windows cannot access \\WORKSTATION2-PC. However if I type in
the ip address or WORKSTATION2-PC, I have no problems.

Can't specify DHCP DNS server ip with a 255 in it
I tried to add 64.102.255.44 a valid ip addres and a public DNS server to my DHCP configuration but the web interface says ip must be in the range 0-254. How can I report this bug?
Not sure which router you have, but I have a WRT54G V5 that I was able to add that IP address as a Static DNS Server without a problem....
You may need to call the Linksys/Cisco tech support number or use an online chat to report the bug...

I have a small office, served by an SA520 and Road Runner cable modem.
What's the recommended setting for our users DNS? Right now our DHCP (via the built in router DHCP server) passes out it's own address as the DHCP server. So client machines point to 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server. Our WAN config on that router then points to the Road Runner DNS servers.
Would it be better performance if we passed down the direct Road Runner DNS servers to the clients? Or even the google open DNS servers? It seems like performance would be better if they went directly to a DNS server rather than proxying through the router.
ThanksDNS is a distributed system to allow load balancing across multiple dns servers. basically the sa520 is a caching dns proxy. The way it works is:
client wants to connect to something (www.cisco.com for example). The client looks in local dns cache, if it has resolved this recently it will use the locally cached IP to connect. (fastest)
if the local cache has timed out or does not have an entry for www.cisco.com, the client goes to its dns server (sa520), if the site is cached there, the SA sends the dns reply back and then the client goes to the site. If the site is not cached, the sa520 will go to it's resolver (Roadrunner), and RR dns may go to it's resolver, and the process continues until the dns process gets to a server that knows the .com .cisco. and www (these might be 3 different servers)
but, and here's where the local caching comes in to make it faster. if you have multiple devices on the network it is likely someone else has already gone to this site, it is cached locally and the router can return a result without resolving over the internet.
This is more important with web pages that have multiple http connections to multiple sites (facebook icons, ads, twitter links, graphics, etc).
Local caching also puts less of a load on the root internet servers, or googles dns.
for a middle config, you can point your SA520 wan dns settings to 8.8.8.8 (google) and see if it impacts your performance, but it really depends on the mix of dns requests that are happening on your network.
generally local caching on the router pointing to a fast dns is the best mix to reduce traffic and DNS querys, but still respond quickly.
Note, a lot of 'slow internet' issues are really caused by slow dns resolution (along with bad programming of web pages with 10s or hundreds or links on them.

DNS is basically a no-brainer, as it's exactly the same product as in
Netware. That said, create a new server, assign the existing zones to
it, done.
DHCP is entirely different. It needs to be migrated, or redone. And it
lacks some features Netware DHCP has. Managing the leases in a GUI for
instance. If you want/need to delete an IP, you have to do that by
editing files in OES.

I have recently turned on the Radius server, and it seems to work fine, and has taken control of my Airport base station which is great. I only have one problem which is that the DHCP info provided by the server to the clients only seems to give one of the 2 DNS addresses that I have listed in the DHCP server info section. This is rather frustrating as it worked fine with WPA!
Any thoughts?I just upgraded from a 2008 domain to 2012. I followed all the best practices, set up new 2012 DC and transferred all roles to it then removed the 2008 server. I just have the one DC at the moment and it's running both DNS and DHCP. Ever since we've had some odd DNS issues which usually require a reboot of the server to fix. Now at this point I'm digging through DNS and DHCP and seeing that a lot of client IP addresses are not matching up. DNS does not have the correct IP's for several clients. How can I fix dns?

Xserve RAID using DHCP - DNS field = 127.0.0.1
I have four Xserves all getting a static IP address from a 10.4.11 OS X Server.
They get the IP address, subnet mask as well as gateway address correctly from the DHCP server BUT the DNS server address is NOT populated - it displays 127.0.0.1
All the other clients on the LAN DO get the DNS server address.

Since the Ping is timeout via ipv4 but Ok via Ipv6, so it's also recommended to just reset the ipv4 setting via the following command and check the result

Just got this router, overall not bad, but a couple of serious problems. When using the built in DHCP there's no way to force serving only the static DNS addresses. I have been using OpenDNS as part of a multi-layer parental control solution... but because this router always serves itself up as a DNS proxy, and bypasses the static DNS configuration, I no longer get the behavior I was able to get with my old wrt54g. It would be great if there were options to :1) Exclude DNS Proxy from the served DHCP list of DNS addresses2) Disable DNS Proxy Somewhat less serious, if you disable the built in DHCP, there's no way to turn it back on, short of resetting the router to factory default settings. All the DHCP configuration is blanked when turned off, and there's no way to restore the configuration to allow it to be re-enabled. I hope to see these issues fixed in the next firmware update!

WRVS4400N v2 DHCP/DNS-Probleme
Hallo,
ich habe seit kurzem den WRVS4400N v2, leider habe ich ein schwerwiegendes Problem.
Alle DHCP-Clients verlieren nach ca.24h (DSL-Disconnect) die Internetverbindung. Über NS-Lookup kann keine ip/webseite aufgelöst werden. das Problem lässt sich nur durch Hardwarereset(Stecker ziehen) oder duch reboot über das Webinterface beheben.
Die DHCP-Lease-Time ist auf 0(1Day) gestellt. LAn funktioniert noch, auf das Webinterface kommt man auch noch aber es Lässt sich von keinem Client eine Webseite öffnen (DNS-Probleme). Aus dem Webinterface des Routers kann über Ping/Trace auf Webseiten zugegriffen werden.
Firmware 2.0.1.3 und Firmware 2.0.2.1 haben beide dieses Problem. Hardwarereset und Factorydefaults haben nichts gebracht.
Eine Internetrecherche hat ergeben das dieses Problem scheinbar mehrere Personen haben, können Sie mir helfen.
Gibt es eine Beta-Firmware oder eine HowTo für das Problem?

nein ich kann von Client aus keine Webseite Pingen!
Ich habe das ganze jetzt nocheinmal weiter eingrenzen können.
Nach genau einem Tag funktioniert DNS nicht mehr.
www.google.de kann ich nicht pingen und auch nicht im Browser öffnen, wenn ich aber die IP-Adresse von Google.de (173.194.69.94) in den Browser eingebe öffnet sich die Google-Webseite ohne Probleme.
Es ist also definitiv ein DNS Problem des DHCP-Servers/Routers.
Dieses Problem Betrifft alle Clients, egal ob WLAN oder Kabel / DHCP oder Feste-IP-Adresse.
Ich vermute das es evtl. etwas mit der 24h-Zwangstrennung des ISP(Provider: Telekom) zu tun hat. da das Problem nach genau 1Tag (24h) auftritt.
Wie kann ich das Problem jetzt beheben? Bitte dringend um Hilfe (Deutsch/Englisch; was schneller geht!!!!)!!
