DHCP Gone AWOL

Since installing the BT home hub 2 of the devices in my home LAN are now 86.x.x.x IP adresses.
I have turned on DHCP in the router but both my NAS and my Phone are getting their IPs from OUTSIDE my house.
I can manually set IP, for the NAS, PS3 etc but why should I need to do this?
Also if my NAS has an external IP then surely the world can see my documents?
Any idea whyt I cant get 192.168.x.x addresses on my own private LAN?

I read that u turn on DHCP, is it was off ??. Leave it on, log on router and find option "DMZ" and check that  HH assign something in there on its own. It can be mobile phone or NAS, remove anything active reboot router and it should be ok but if u dont find anything in there read below have fun
hmmm...  try without phone, switch off phone, disconnect all ethernet devices from HH, swithc off HH wait 2 min, switch back on.
You may get  IP from mobile phone which is connected to the network, and if u have android untick reshare or use this phone as access point.
NAS dont like new BT Home Hub or u mobile phone, try one by one. Connect one device ALONE !! and check IP, if correct then unplug and connect another device etc.
They all may get alone correct address but when all are on wont work.Check witch device cause problem and set static IP.
ps: Maybe NAS choosed  neighbour wi fi network which is unprotected or its use BT zone etc .
Depends what u set, it may connect in auto to available networks when one is down the device will connect to another and I the phone is connected via NAS ?? isnt ??, or if u putted WPA2 key NAS may have a problem and when it cant connect it will connect to any available network
If so then upgrade firmware of NAS and if wont connect change security encryption.
Depends of what model u have of NAS,  even possible is sytuation that BT HH block ethernet connection of NAS --HH and NAS will use Wi Fi to connect to the network.
ps1: yes if u have outside IP for NAS anybody can watch your documents online

  • TC disk has gone AWOL

After several attempts to back up my old Powerbook running 10.5.8 to my 500Mb TC, the TC volume has gone off line. After power cycling the TC, I get a message that the drive has problems, and airport utility basically gives me the option to erase the drive or ignore the issue (some option, eh?). I chose to ignore since I have other files on the TC volume, and now I can't get the TC volume up at all, so I can't even attempt any kind of disk repair.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of TC flakiness? Any solutions out there?
    TIA,
    Ed

In all probablity the invisible bit got set on the startup drive. It happens. See for instance this discussion thread:

That should have all the information you need.

  • Podcasts gone AWOL

    Greetings;
Today, after not using iTunes for several days, I opened it to refresh the podcasts for the trip to work. Clicking on the Podcasts source, the content pane was empty! No Podcasts at all! I had built up a nice list of podcasts over the years, now all gone!
Searched the discussions and kbase. No joy. Went to the Advanced prefs and pointed again to the music folder on an external drive where it has been for a long time. Selected File > Add to Library... and pointed to the Podcast folder on the external drive, but the added items were not the same as last week, some kind of subset from months ago.
Searched for how to rebuild the database and came up with a "re-create" procedure that sounds extreme and will require I export all of my dozens of playlists one by one and later add them back, Ouch!!!
Good golly, what is going on here? The music, movies, books seem to be fine, iPhone sync'd fine to all other tabs. It's just the podcasts, that are gone, gone, gone!
    AAAaaarrrggghhh!
Any ideas? is there a rebuild or something less extreme than deleting the database completely and adding all the playlists back?
    Please help, Sincerely, dave

Chris, thanks. A follow up if you don't mind.
I have iTunes pointing to a folder on an external FW drive where there is a folder with folders inside by artist name. At one point in the past I just told iTunes to put the music there using the specified procedure for moving music to an external. Still, in the iTunes folder in the Music folder, there are folders for Album Artwork, iTunes Music (containing only a few folders and a podcast folder that doesn't match my lost podcasts), and Previous Libraries, an iTunes Library file and an iTunes Music Library.xml file. The latter two show modification dates in 2006, which furthers the mystery.
So, specifically, when you say restore from backup, do you mean something like trashing the entire iTunes folder but not the music folders on the external? and then going to Backup (the app) and restoring the most recent iTunes folder from there?
    Thanks.

  • HD GONE AWOL

    Greetings,
My internal HD on my 17" G4 powerbook is no longer being recognised. When I try to start up, it gets to grey screen and no further. When I boot from tiger disc and go to disk utility, it tries to find HD but fails.
I also have tried to view HD using system profiler ATA and I get the same spinning wheel of death.
Has my HD gone to God?... and would this mean my PB is also dead, or can I replace the HD?
    Help me please

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
It sounds like your hard drive may have gone to meet it's maker, so to speak. It would be good to run the Apple hardware test to confirm whether the drive is dead or whether the logic board has an issue.
The hard drive is replaceable, and hopefully you had any important files backed up. As Arnie pointed out, it's not trivial to replace it yourself, although if you're handy you can do it. Otherwise, best to leave it to Apple or an Apple authorized service center. When you replace it, you might consider a larger hard drive, as many types of files take up more space today versus a few years ago. Also, you have the option of installing a quicker 7200rpm hard drive.

  • Q10 Settings - Notifications: Tone box gone AWOL?

Just got a Q10 and upgraded to the latest OS verison.
Went to change the ringtone and followed instructions up to the bit where it says "Tap Tone". However there is no Tone text to tap.
Does anyone have any idea where it could have gone to?? I'm baffled...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Open your main system Options > Notifications > Applications > Phone
Underneath the "Sound" On/Off setting, you will see a "Tone" bar, tap it.
    Underneath that is "Vibrate" On/Off

  • Quote icon gone AWOL or is it just me?

I just noticed that the Quote icon (when replying) is missing. The "button" works, but the icon is the usual AWOL question mark.
Should I delete cache or is it on the server side?

I just cleared cache and it's back.

  • ISight IMac's 250GB hard drive gone AWOL

I've had this iMac less than two weeks, and I adore it. For those of you waffling between the 17" and 20", go for the 20" it's worth the extra. I even love the Mighty Mouse that came with it. Which is a surprise because generally speaking I love all things Apple, except their mice.
    But, there is a problem…
So, yesterday I wake my iMac from sleep and try to log in. I get the Spinning Beachball of Doom. Wait wait wait. I hear my once silent iMac making clicking noises. Try rebooting. Nada. Still making clicks, and I can't get past the gray screen.
This morning, I boot from the DVDs that came with the iMac and try to run Disk Utility to repair the obviously stressed hard drive. Several times I got a response of "No Verifiable Packages." Odd.
So I installed Tiger onto my LaCie Drive, which is what I'm running from now. Go back to Disk Utility, and the internal drive on this iMac doesn't even show up now.
I'd like to get the newer files off of the iMac. But, I fear they are history.
Suggestions (other than hauling it to the local Apple Store for the Genius Bar)?
    iMac g5 w/iSight; Pismo Powerbook; LaCie 160G FW; WIN2000 P3 PC   Mac OS X (10.4)

It's official. The drive is DOA.
Apple is a class act. They could have replaced the drive only. But with it dying in such a short period of time, they replaced the whole unit. Way to go Apple!
FWIW, this unit is as silent as the other one. Sweet.

  • Spotlight problem in Lion (Tags gone AWOL!)

My friend, Pierre Bernard of Houdah Software, figured out what was going on. I'm curious if anyone else has yet encountered this problem.
I noticed the problem with sound files - you search for a specific piece of information (a tag) and it just can't find it.  I noticed this both in Spotlight itself, and in Houdah Spot, which is a very advanced front end for Spotlight.
    According to Pierre:
The problem is that the CoreMedia.importer does not forward this information to Spotlight.
Whenever you modify a file on the system, Spotlight searches for an importer plug-in to process the file. The role of the importer is to process the file into a list of metadata attributes and values. Those are stored by Spotlight and thus searchable.
The Lion version of CoreMedia.importer provides only basic information: just file attributes and a bogus audio bit rate.
The older version of CoreMedia.importer provided title, album, track number, author, composer, …
Pierre submitted this information to Apple
Here are his more specialized technical reports:
Attached below is the output for:
    mdimport -d4 "/Volumes/Media/iTunes Music/Compilations/Jagged Little Pill/12 Wake Up.m4a"
CoreMedia.mdimporter reports a audio bit rate of 128 bit/s. The correct value would be 128kbits/s
Thus CoreMedia.mdimporter should return a value of 128000.
Conversely /System/Library/Spotlight/Audio.mdimporter reports correct values for MP3 files it imports.
Thus the Spotlight database has kbit/s values for M4A files, but bit/s value for MP3 files.

The CoreMedia.mdimporter version 705.35 installed with Mac OS X Lion extracts much less metadata from AAC files than version 484.52 on Snow Leopard did.

Just FYI, I tried this and CoreMedia.mdimporter is still snagging my files.
However, if you do something like:
    $ mdimport -g $to_the_snowleopard/Audio.mdimporter $files_to_index
This should work, at least until the system decides to reindex with the default.  However, neither appear to be importing M4a files and when I run this command with either the Snow Leopard Audio.mdimporter or CoreMedia.mdimporter I get:
    "2011-10-01 11:03:14.235 mdimport[1386:707] Imported '/Volumes/Work/Sound Library/Sound Ideas/SI9000 M4A/SI9012/901299 Swinging Wood Door 6.m4a' of type 'com.apple.m4a-audio' with no plugIn"
Ugh: "no plugin."   When I don't use -g and let the machine use it druthers to decide which importer to use, it uses the /System/Library/Spotlight/ one.  If I remove the CoreMedia importer from /System/Library and leave the Audio and CoreMedia importer in /Library/Spotlight, it imports m4as with no plugin.  If I COPY the old Snow Leopard CoreMedia importer into /System/Library/Spotlight, it imports m4as with no plugin.  Something keeps the system from using the old importer, you suppose the new one is signed and the old one is just untrusted?
I for one use the kMDItemComment and kMDItemDescription extensively for a sound effects library and not having them in my Apple Lossless M4a files really screws me up.

We're setting up a test environment for our backup software, currently running on Windows, but targeted for Solaris. This is also a test of our first Solaris x86 deployment.

    * One dual port Emulex HBA
    * IBM DS8300 SAN
When we first set this up, we could see the one LUN in format. After adding in the IBM Multipathing software, the LUN disappeared and the FC devices are shown as unconfigured in `cfgadm -al`. We removed the IBM multipathing software, but still cannot see the LUN. Did a reconfiguration reboot and all that.

#We're currently at a loss here. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I am checking sunsolve and google, with plenty of similar hits, but no resolution as yet.

Ok, so after that detailed message, my SAN admin just realised he hadn't assigned any LUNs to the server. :D
The LUN that we had seen previously was an artifact from an earlier configuration.

  • System preferences dialogue box has gone awol

I was trying to watch a video on the support area of the apple site and had no sound. I clicked the apple top left and clicked system preferences but no panel appeared. nothing appeared, just the desk top. I tried the System Preferences icon in the dock at the bottom of the screen but again nothing appeared on the desktop. this worked before, any suggestions?

    Hi,
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.systempreferneces.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. If that didn't help, go back to your Home folder Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file to the Trash. See if that helps.

  • Iphoto 8 - thumbnails have gone AWOL in event folders.

I can see all of the events and all of the albums.  When I hover over each event/album, I can see the photos.  When I double click to open an event or an album, there are no thumbnails, only a single large photo (able to scroll - but not able to see all at the same time).
    How to correct this?!?!?!

NEVER MIND - I found a way to resolve the issue.

  • Copy-and-paste has gone AWOL!

I suddenly cannot copy-and-paste text from one application to another (from Appleworks Word Processor to a new empty AOL email, for ex.) using either mouse or keyboard. I also cannot drag any icons on the desktop. I could do all of these a few days ago. But I can copy-and-paste text from one Appleworks WP file to another. Appreciate any ideas.

    [email protected]

I received an email suggesting a solution, which did solve my problem. Here's what I did:
    1. I trashed two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    2. To be sure I had the correct files, I used "FIND" from the FILE menu and searched for each file name.
    3. Since I could not DRAG files, I selected "MOVE TO TRASH" from the FILE menu.
    4. I emptied the TRASH and re-started the computer.
All is now OK. I can once again COPY-AND-PASTE between applications, and DRAG icons and files on the desktop.
    Thanks for the help!!

  • I photo images have gone AWOL

I recently had a brief power outage. My Imac G5 was asleep at the time. When it rebooted, the photo library was empty. I downloaded a test version of file salvager, which found the missing files. Before purchasing this software, is there a way to reclaim the photo files and why would this happen? Do I need to repair Iphoto before attempting the file recovery? Thanks.
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If you did a search for the folder names Originals, Modified and Data and nothing came up, then I don't know what to tell you.
Usually when someone opens their iPhoto Library and it is empty, it is usually because the data files got messed up in the old library and iPhoto can't read them to open the library. It will then create a new library when it opens. In the new library there will be no Originals, Modified or Data folders until photos are imported.
In your case, if doing a search for the Originals, Modified and Data folders comes up empty, it means either those folders got deleted somehow along with the photos in them. If the data rescue software comes up with jpeg files, the files it comes up with are files that have been deleted from the hard drive, but have not been overwritten yet. It can recover all the files that have not been overwritten.

  • Thumbnail previews gone awol

I have been using aperture 1.0, 1.0.1 and 1.1 quite happily with my 20D.
On Friday I upgraded to the latest update, 1.1.1 and on Saturday swapped my 20D for a 30D.
Now when I import RAW images from the 30D, I don't get a preview of the images. They do import, and once into aperture they are fine, but it's frustrating losing the preview. The 30D is listed as a support camera.
Thoughts - is it the 30D, a setting on the 30D that escapes me, or a problem with Aperture and/or the 1.1.1 update?
Has anybody else seen/not seen the same effect with this combo?
    Help!!!!!!
Also, Lightroom doesn't seem to accept the 30D images at all, imagine they haven't updated their RAW support list yet to support it.
    Cheers
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
Are you importing directly from the camera? This might be a known problem via previous thread. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=448746&tstart=0#2159477
If so, have you tried importing from the card with a card reader? Or have you tried importing from the desktop after copying your images over from the camera?
