Dhcp not allocating addresses

My network is managed by Mac Mini Server (Lion) with an Airport Extreme.
I have the wireless set up as WPA2 Enterprise with the Radius Server, Open Directory, DNS and DHCP running on my Mac Mini Server.
In the past week, possibly since the last updates were applied, all wireless devices are having real issues connecting to the network. They are authenticating OK but an address is either never assigned or appears after 5 or ten minutes. To verify this I tried to connect iPad. This was set to use DHCP and the wifi symbol appears intermittently at the top of screen but on the networks page a spinning wheel appears next to the network name and the address details (i.e local address, router, DNS, etc.) are all empty. If I configure for manually entered address details the deveice connects immediately and works fine. Switching back to DHCP and the problem comes back (i.e. connects to wifi but no address is ever allocated).
Any ideas on why DHCP would suddenly stop working. I have tried restarting the service, rebooting the Airport, rebooting the server but nothing seams to fix it. Every thing was working just fine for the past 6 months.

Thanks for reply.
Router is:
Netopia ADSL Gateway 3346N-002
4 port 10/100 Ethernet built-in
The settings in the Control Panel didn't show anything of note.
What's interesting is that when the user's laptop went back to the hotel again today, the same issue cropped again -- hotel's DHCP not giving IP Address.   The office DHCP server was assigning no problem.
Then...  I checked Access Connections Profiles and noticed that "Disable this wireless radio when switching to a different location" was not checked for any profiles.
I checked off on all profile and then the hotel DHCP made the connection.
I did read somewhere that a possible fix is to do an IPCONFIG/RELEASE * and then do an immediate Shutdown/Restart.  Issue is that I didn't have this option on the user's laptop before I made the Access Connections fix.
Please reply to clarify or add anything -- I appreciate your quick response because I spent 4 additional hours last night.

  • Help needed : DHCP not assigning addresses on VMware. click for more details.

    Hello people of technet,
I'm new to this forum I was told I could get some help here. I need your help with an issue that I have on my network. As the title says, my DHCP server is not assigning addresses from a specific pool.
    Information about the topology:
I have to sites linked with a VPN site to site connection. In the first site I have a DHCP Server, In the second site I have a client that should get an address automatically from the DHCP. I installed a DHCP relay agent on the server that manages the VPN
connection on the second site with a correct configuration. All other configurations are done right I verified a couple of times. I checked the connectivity with a ping test between the client (with static address for the test) from the second site to the
DHCP server from the first site, it is all working. The problem is that the DHCP server is not assigning addresses from the specific pool. All machines (4) run on windows server 2008 r2.
Thank you for your time and support, just tell me if you need more informations.

I fixed the problem it is working now, apparently it was the VMnet cards that caused the issue I've just reseted their configuration to default state. I've had the idea after you asked me to check DHCP address assignement on the same site. One more thing
to do now, switch from the workgroup to a domain.
    Thank you for you time.

  • WRVS4400N : DHCP not assigning IP addresses if WAN link is down

    Hello,
With the latest firmware installed (the one suporting fixed IP based on MAC), I have one problem: the DHCP server is not assigning addresses when the WAN link is down. When it is up, it generally assign IP based on the configuration binding (MAC/IP). But it sometimes fail to do so. Before using the wrvs4400n I had no issues with DHCP wrt54G and other routers.
    Any hints ?
    Thanks.
    V.

    Hi there!
Thanks for contacting the business support - other guys got the same problem.
I'm now back on firmware version 1.00.16 and everything works fine.
But the new features were nice to have!

  • I'm hooked up to the ethernet using DHCP with manual address. It's running (green) but my internet (Safari, messenger, email) doesn't work! Help!

I'm running an iMac with Mountain Lion. Not only do we do accounting work on this computer with AccountEdge, but the computer functions as a server to another computer in a different state.
Anyway, I set a static IP address (Using DHCP with manual address) on it (to allow for a VPN to the computer in the different state) and it is connected (green dot) - meaning that the other computer in the different state can connect to us via that ethernet line - but for some reason Safari, Messanger, and Apple Email won't work.
But if I switch a dynamic IP (DHCP auto), I can use the internet (Safari, messanger, email), but the computer in the different state can't connect to this computer.
How can I fix this so that the computer in the different state can connect to this computer and that the internet (Safari, messanger, and email) can work at the same time?
    Much thanks!

No but if they are using a VPN Tunnel for the connection that restricts all internet traffic over the tunnel. Which means you can't use that same computer to broswe the internet or connect to other computers or devices on your LAN.
I'd need to see the actual setup, router and the IP addresses you are using.
Networking and remote networking is fairly easy when you are in front of the systems you are working on. Doing it over the internet on a forum is almost impossible. Tha is why I suggested you get local help, like the person that originally set it up.

  • Can't mount external HDD? "usb 1-1: Device not accepting address"

I just bought a Medion HDDRIVE2GO (Full Speed) from Aldi, and at first when I plugged it in, everything went fine (well, I thought so). Appearently it had some errors with HAL not being able to read the HDD (error name="(unset)").
I gave it a reboot, and now it does not work at all! In dmesg, I have this output (the bottom is the most important I guess)

I found this post on linux forums which say It's a HAL related problem.
"rmmod ehci_hcd" made it work for some of these guys Which one of them explains It's a data speed issue. Cables.., 2.0 1.0, that sort of things. Read it, I bet you'll get more out of it, It's old though.
Try removing the module, plugging the drive, check dmesg, and mount manually.

  • RID Master not allocating new rid pool

     Hi guys,
I am having some problems with my server. I am unable to create new AD objects with the message, the directory has exhausted the pool of relative identifiers. I have a SBS 2003 environment with only that as the DC. However, a while ago, the previous
admin promoted another server (Server 2003) as a Backup DC and later on the network was split and the Secondary DC no longer connected to the domain. It was not demoted or anything like that. The network was split in two and now after almost a year I am unable
to create new objects. The PDC has all the FSMO roles as indicated when i run the netdom query fsmo command. Below is the dcdiag /v output:

Also, another problem I am experiencing seems to point to my DNS service which also runs on the same machine. When I try to open Active Directory snap ins, it indicates that the domain does not exist or cannot be contacted and the AD is unable to load.
I'd really appreciate any help at the moment. Thanks in advance.
    Shawn

    Idan,
Yes I followed the article regarding removing data in AD with NTDSUTIL. There is one domain and one site, but it states that there is "no current server" and "no current naming context"
My TCP/IP config was set to 127.0.0.1 but then I changed it to point to its static IP Address, but I stumbled onto a best practice article which indicated that the 127 address was preferred, so I changed it back. I changed it as you said and ran the commands

  • DHCP with manual address doesn't work

My ISP has decided that they won't support static addresses for the
DHCP servers anymore. I'd really like to keep static IP addresses, so
I tried using the "DHCP with manual address." Unfortunately, it
doesn't recognize my Router which is serving DHCP. What's busted here?
Is it Tiger or is it my router (old mansesnse MIH-130).
    Any help is appreciated.
    thanks.

Comcast I believe is a cable connection.
Interesting, I found that if I continue to manually configure the
TCP/IP settings and just point the DNS to the router (192.168.1.1),
all works perfectly. This worked for 10.4.5, 9.2 and Yellowdog Linux as well.
When you say your isp is no longer using static ip addresses this only affecs your WAN ip. Setup your router to receieve internet via DHCP.
Your LAN ip addresss won't change. You can give all your macs static ip addresses if you like. It does not affect your WAN IP.

  • Client DHCP not working

    Here's the situation;
4402 controller (2 actually), AP-manager and manager in vlan 1, untagged, native vlan of trunked switchport set to 1. Not using LAG at this time. See access points, so that works (DHCP in VLAN 1).
Got 3 additional data VLAN's. Created 3 dynamic interaces with IP's in that specific VLAN, and 3 WLAN's. Have 3 DHCP server addresses (one DHCP server per VLAN) and i configured these server addresses on the dynamic interface, not on the WLAN.
Clients get associated, but cannot get an IP address.
Should this work or should i configure the DHCP server on the WLAN's instead?
And does a 2003 server needs config to accept DHCP relay?

    Hi Friend,
You need not have DHCP server on every VLAN. You can have one DHCP server with multiple pools for different subnet and can attach your DHCP server on one VLAN as you have done in your case on vlan 2.
You can simply have layer 3 device doing routing between your data vlans and vlan having DHCP server.
When you specify your DHCP server IP address on your interfaces which you have configured on controller it will play a role of relay agent.
If you routing is fine between your vlans and you have specified your dhcp server ip address under interface configuration on controller it should work.
Tell me if I got your problem or not and if not can you please explain your problem again.
    Regards,
    Ankur

  • Leopard : Network : Unable to use DHCP with manual address.

After installing Leopard on my Macmini (PowerPC 1.42Ghz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD), I found my IP address obtains different IP address than Panther and Tiger use. Then I go into System Preferences -> Network -> select Ethernet -> select "Using DHCP with manual address" in the "Configure" combo box, and change the IP address from 192.168.0.8 to 192.168.0.100. Once I hit apply, the network connection never comes back. There is no complaint that another computer is using the 192.168.0.100 IP address. This works if I am using Panther or Tiger on the same computer.
    Any help is appreciated.

Setting the DHCP to a number you want to use can be very useful in a busy environment. I usually choose to use numbers that are outside of the range of numbers being controlled by my router (Westell).
Port Forwarding for services like ARD, Azureus, or any server application break when the IP number changes for any reason.
Some routers will not allow numbers outside of a restricted range of numbers that can be set up in the router configuration menu's. In this case, I find out if the router is assigning numbers from the high or low end and make sure I assign numbers at the opposite end of the range.
My Westell router does allow me to use numbers other than the range of 50 numbers it has been told to use for DHCP, but I have also encountered problems when trying this on a wireless connection.

  • Using WPA results in "self-assigned IP" / DHCP not working / Comm prob?

    Hi,
New to the forum...just replaced all wintel boxes with new macs (macbook pro and mac mini; both at 10.4.6) talking to a new AEBS (updated firmware) which is connected to a Comcast cable modem.
Configuring the AEBS without security results in a very happy network...good range and DHCP behaves properly...handing IP addresses to both clients promptly and the throughput as reflected by www.speakeasy.net/speedtest is great.
Adding wireless security to the mix, be it WPA+WPA2; WPA2; WPA; WEP, creates problems. If I configure the AEBS with WPA+WPA2, for instance, put in a password, update the router, reboot the cable modem and the router, delete any existing preferred networks, add a new preferred network with WPA2 and the correct password (btw, I have cleared my keychain to avoid any password caching problems) and apply the changes the following behavior occurs like clockwork: The client connects to the AEBS, as reflected in the status in the network preferences window and the internet connect window, but it never gets an IP address from the AEBS and is stuck in the "self-assigned IP" / 169.x.x.x abyss. I wait much longer than 40 seconds and nothing ever changes. In addition, attempting to configure the AEBS while in this state (from airport admin utility) results in a very long attempt to read the configuration which never works - I need to connect with ethernet to reconfigure. If I go back and remove the security policy on both sides the network works just fine...including the ability to configure the AEBS over wireless.
For the record, the AEBS settings are: Open network; channel 11; b only; no interference robustness set; uses DHCP for IP from cable modem; distributes IP addresses - shares single IP address using DHCP + NAT using 192.168.1.1 addressing. All of that seems appropriate and correct but, hey, it ain't working and I am out of ideas.
    All help is welcome! Thanks.

    Hey Rich,
I eventually got mine to work but I really cannot give you a clear view of how...it was hit or miss. If you are running into the same thing, I might be able to guide you to the same resolution.
When you turn on WEP or WPA, does the network connect but not get an IP address from DHCP (self-assigned address abyss) or does it not connect at all? Asked another way, what does the system preferences / show / network status page say for the wireless network in question?

  • Contacts NOT in Address Book Syncing to iPhone

Long story short, I created a distribution list for my father in law with 800 addresses in it. Then deleted all the cards and distribution list. They still show up in my iPhone, no matter what I do.
    I have tried the following:
#1 Confirmed they are not in address book, at all, whatsoever
#2 Unchecked sync addresses, and re-sync, still showing up
#3 Under Advanced, checked replace information on this iPhone - Contacts
#4 Confirmed my addresses are not syncing via Mobile Me
#5 Confirmed latest version of iTunes 10.1.1 and iOS4.
Any ideas? I can't even manually delete them from the iPhone without a 3rd Party App.
    Thanks for the help.

  • How do I see a list of all my Apple Mail contacts. I do not use address book. I just want to see all the email addresses stored on my Mac

    Hi All,
I have been using Mail for the past three years without need to send a regular mailing list mailout.
I now need to send group emails and all I want to do is browse my contacts aquired over the last three years to create a list. I have not used Address Book for anything other than phone contacts so please do not point me in that dirrection.
There must be a list of all email contacts stored somewhere on the Mac that I can look through. It is an almost impossible task to do this by browsing my inbox/sent folders.
Hope you can help and thanks in advance!

    0. find the user id.
        a. log in as that specific user.
        b. run terminal
        c. type "echo $UID"
        d. write down the user id that will be displayed
    1. Go to the finder
    2. go to the user home folder
    3. click the box with the magnifying glass (upper right corner of the window)
    4. type .jpg
    5. a menu will pop under the magnifying glass box, select "jpg image"
    6. click the "plus" sign that's displayed to the right of the word "save"
    7. two pull down menus will appear, select "other" from the first one
    8. a new window will pull down, scroll to "owner" and select it
    9. back in the original window type the user id (a number) to the right of "owner" "equals"
    Hope this helps

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to "login." Select the most recent one and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Maps not Reading Addresses in Contacts

I have updated a contact's address. The new address shows up on my iphone (where I made the change), mobile me online and address book on my macbook. However, when I open the map app on my phone and type in the person's name, her old address pops up. How to I get the map to recognize the addresses currently in my contacts (not old addresses)?
The update was made 2 days ago so I don't think time is an issue (as in it hasn't had time to recognize the change). Help!

  • Attaching "faux notes" to Address Book contacts

Lots of CRMs and Personal Organizers let you attach multiple notes to a Contact, along with a datetime stamp for that Note. Address Book does not, alas.
Leopard's Email client, however, let's you create free-standing Notes for your Inbox (or wherever you drag them). But these cannot be attached to a contact.
    My "workaround" for this is:
    1) Create a new "ON MY MAC" mailbox called "Faux Notes"
    2) Create a New Message for the contact(s) you want to affiliate this "faux note" to
    3) Save it as a Draft
    4) Drag it from the "Drafts" folder over to your "Faux Notes" mailbox. This shall ensure that you cannot email your note off to the contact(s) by mistake. The Faux Note also becomes read-only at this point.
    5) If you want to edit or add to that "Faux Note," then you must first drag it back to the Drafts folder.
    Voila!
    Benefits:
    A) Faux Notes are searchable in Spotlight (as are regular Notes).
    B) Faux Notes show up in Smart Mailboxes such as those created by the handy "Mailboxer" utility (http://earthlingsoft.net/Mailboxer).
Now, I just wish I could figure out how to attach a button to the View Contacts pane of Address Book that would kick off an on-they-fly Spotlight query for mail to/from all the email addresses affiliated with that Contact, as in:
[email protected] kind:email OR [email protected] kind:email OR [email protected] kind:email
Feedback welcome! I'm a recent Mac convert after having PCs for the past 15 years.
    Regards,
    Alan.

I placed this question up here almost two years ago, and the problem has since resolved itself.  I think because I have upgraded my mac's operating system (OS) several times since then.
You might want to check and see if you're using the latest version of Mac OS X (currently 10.8.4).  If you're not up-to-date, go into the App Store on your Mac and see if there is an OS update waiting for you.  That might help.
    Good luck.
