DHCP or PPOE?

Am trying to reconnect my laptop to my wireless network via WRT54G.  My desktops are working the router set on PPOE but my laptop has a 165 IP address.  When I try ipconfig/renew it says media is disconnected, unable to contact your DHCP server.  If I go back into the router configuration and change it to DHCP is that all I have to do or will that change my 2 desktops ability to connect to the internet?  I'm pretty wireless illiterate so am apprehensive to make too many changes.  Any help?

  • Can connect via SMB but not AFP....

    Hi Guys,
Firstly, please let me apologise in case im being really stupid (highly likely! )
I have a mixed environment in which i have some iMacs (running Mavericks) and some Mac Pros (Running Mountain Lion 10.8.5).  When connencting to the XServe using AFP, some get an error. I will go throught the steps i follow.
    - From Finder, Go>Connect to Server..>afp://10.***.**.**>Connect
    - I enter the login credentials and select Connect
    - It gives me the option to select which volume to mount.  I select Volume 1 and select OK
    - Error - There was a problem connecting to the server "10.---.--.--". You do not have permission to access this server
When trying to access the server suing SMB instead of AFP (using the same credentials) it connects fine.
The issue with SMB is that for some reason, some of the folders wont show through SMB (no idea why)
The problem is affecting one imac on Mavericks and two Mac Pros on Mountain Lion.  If i attempt to login using SMB on any machines which work fine with AFP, they will connect but after that, they wont revertback to AFP.  They get the same error as above.
Any idea whats causing this?If any of the above causes confusion, feel free to shout at me and i will try to clear anything up.
    Really appreciaste the help guys!
    Pami

You'll need to connect your modem to your AEBS WAN port, configure your AEBS with the Airport Admin Utility, setting up the PPOE to properly log into your modem connection.
You should set up your mac to us DHCP (not PPOE).
THis should allow you to use either the ethernet port or wireless from your AEBS.
    I hope this helps!

  • Can connect via Ethernet but not via AirPort

I'm having some problems using my AirPort in Germany. I can connect just fine using an Ethernet cable direct from the modem (NETGEAR DG632B) but when I have plug the Ethernet cable into the AirPort I can't connect. I beleive it has to do with PPoE settings, which I am not really familiar with.
There are three spots I can enter my account info. 1, on the modem itself via Safari; 2, on the AirPort via AirPort Admin Utility; 3, on the Mac via Network Preferences. I have input my PPoE username/password into the modem while directly connected. I would tend to think that this shoudl be it and that everywhere on the LAN side of the modem would be able to utilize that account. The NETGEAR settings page shows the ADSL port Network Type as PPPOE and the LAN port as DHCP, so I have attempted to set up my AirPort and Network prefs using DHCP. That leads to "You are not connected to the Internet. Safari can’t open the page “http://www.google.com/” because your computer isn’t connected to the Internet." Network Diagnostics shows green at AirPort, AirPort Settings, Network Settings and ISP. It initially shows yellow at Internet and Server which lead to "Failed" on both. Network Diagnostics then asks me to choose my network port configuration (Built-in Ethernet, Internal Modem, Airport,Other). I select AirPort and select my AirPort network. Then all the Status lights except for AirPort turn red and asks if I use a DSL or cable model. I select yes, it asks me to restart the device, I do, it asks if I can restart any other devices, I select no. At that point Network Diagnostics says it is unable to connect to the Internet.
I have down-graded to Airport Firmware v5.5.1 as some have advised. No change. I'm running MacOS 10.4.6
My AirPort is just fine as I can use it to set up a LAN with no problem. I even pulled out my old Graphite base station and tried it. Same thing.
I have tried putting my PPPoE account info into my AirPort, my Network prefs both individually and both at the same time. Nothing. Is there something that I'm missing?

You'll need to connect your modem to your AEBS WAN port, configure your AEBS with the Airport Admin Utility, setting up the PPOE to properly log into your modem connection.
You should set up your mac to us DHCP (not PPOE).
THis should allow you to use either the ethernet port or wireless from your AEBS.

  • I have time capsule and I am unable to connect to the internet using static public IP

I have been using my Time Capsule on my company network for some time.
Recently I removed the time capsule and connected the TC  Wan port directly to the firewall.  We have got block of static IPs provided to us from our ISP.
Im confused in filling up the internet tap on the Airport Utility (Lion Version)
If Im using a static public IP to connect to the internet should I use
    Static, DHCP or PPoe?
IP Address: is this the IP address of the public IP address given to Us from ISP?
    Subnetmask. ..no problem
Router Address: what should I type here: IP address of my firewall or my ISP's GateWay IP?
    DNS servrs are clear...
    Please guide me.

Normally you would just set this up with dhcp to the firewall.. if the firewall is setup correctly it will simply pass you one of the block of static IP addresses.. if it doesn't or get a NAT address you should be able to allocate a static IP to the TC in the firewall to its MAC address.
I am not sure that the static IP will work if you just type it in.
If you want to have a go..
If Im using a static public IP to connect to the internet should I use
    Static, DHCP or PPoe?
Try static only if dhcp doesn't work because the firewall is not setup.
IP Address: is this the IP address of the public IP address given to Us from ISP?
Yes, a free IP from the block.
Router Address: what should I type here: IP address of my firewall or my ISP's GateWay IP?
Either should work if the firewall is setup correctly.. otherwise just try ISP gateway.

  • 2 router help.. computer guy needs help

Hey everyone.. trying to isolate wireless on my network.
router one netgear setup as dhcp and ppoe to my dsl modem. would like to keep the wired network first on the netgear.
router 2 linksys wireless is plugged from netgear port into linksys wan .. would like to use this isolated from the 0.1 sub that netgear is putting out. so i have connected using 1.1 sub and it gets its ip and can ping from the routers internal ping test although the pcs cannont. it works if in gateway mode although i dont want the users to be able to ping my netgear network so i put in router mode to isolate . problem is that the pc cant get out.. tried some static routing with no avail and i think possible the double nat is causing troubles. i need to have dhcp on the wireless so i can get this icafe working and keep users of the network. i dont want to use the ap isolation in the adavanced tab because i think i shouldnt have to and should be able to get these beeachess (that bitches for u wonder) working like i have the plugged.. if you test u'll notice that the if in gateway mode the two networks can see each other  (tell me why and i will kiss u- although must be some double nat or gatewaycrap ) ok thats the speel... which one of ya thinks that he can help.
i am leaving them in gateway over the weekend but if someone stumbles this they might get on the local network and figure how much i a charging them to get this to work
    thanks

    bugeyed computer guy

Yes, you are on the right track. As stated in the included instruction manual, you will need to charge your iPod for four hours or until the display changes so that it shows a power plug (meaning that it is fully charged).
Also note that while your iPod is charging, you can also add songs and videos to it.

  • IMac 350 MHz 10.3.9 DSL/Linksys router

    History:
iMac connected fine with my comcast cable modem/linksys router wired.
    10.3.9 iMac 350 MHz
When I brought it to my Brothers house (he has DSL and a linksys wired router) it won't connect with either DHCP or PPoe ...
    HELP!

DSL supplied by AT&T (SBC) or Verizon can have a router attached to the modem. It is my understanding that is true of most DSL suppliers.
The purpose of the router is to channel the demands of multiple computers at the customer end in an orderly manner into the DSL service (that allows only one connection at a time at the supplier end) so that the demand on the DSL supplier is the equivalent of a single computer. I believe some DSL suppliers allow more than one connection to their line, but I have not personally verified that.
I believe the suppliers' rules for cable service may be more restrictive than for DSL service, as additional connections degrades cable service, but not DSL service.

  • Why is my ipad and itunes working for everything on the stores, but the search doesnt work on them? Any ideas what i can do to help it?

My ipad and iphone wont search for anything on the app store or itunes store, after a minute of loading it says 'server has timed out' in the blue box. But the weird thing is all the other features on the stores work, and do not crash. How could i fix this?

    try this
I seperated each step and changed it abit for ya that i found that maybe useful for you bc it sounds like the same "Wireless Weirdness" that this person had the same problem.

    1. Restart the computer and wait to see if the network is discovered before entering it manually.
    2. Power off on the modem and router and restarted computer
    3. If no network selected, do the diagnostics
    4. Enter the SSID & PSWD
    5. If asked for DHCP or PPo, chose DHCP
    6. If asked for cable, say no bc u use wireless
after that, it should work for ya

  • WVC80N stopped working

    hello,
my WVC80N has stopped working correctly. it was working fine before through cable internet. i've switched over to DSL and the motion sensor emailing feature is no longer sending out notifications. i'm not sure what to do or what to adjust in the settings. because of this change, the connection mode has gone from DHCP to PPoE, but i'm not sure how that should have affected the camera, especially when i've reconfigured it using the installation CD - assuming that would take care of any alterations on its own.
is there anything i'm missing or anything i should be adjusting in order for the feature to go back to normal and work again?
    thanks!

You mentioned in your post that the Internet Connection has been changed from Cable connection to PPoE so that then whole scenario has been changed… You need to reconfigure the Camera once again….
So for the Reconfiguration of the Camera follow the following steps:
    # Check the IP address of the Camera from the DHCP client table of the Router ….
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type “IP address of Camera” that will open up the Camera setup page…
Or refer to this link to open the setup page of the Camera - http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=22985&userrole=Links...
    # When the Wireless-N IP Camera’s setup page appears, click Setup.
    # Scroll down to the Wireless Settings section and enter the wireless network’s settings.  The settings should match the wireless network settings on your router.
    # Look for the SSID field and enter the wireless network’s SSID, then on the Network Type drop down menu, select Infrastructure
    # If wireless security is disabled in your router, click Disable then click Apply.
If wireless security is enabled in your router, click Enable then click Edit Security Settings.
    # Select the security mode as it has been selected in the Router…Click Apply.
    # Then Click on Options and enable Alternate Web Access Port and provide the Port number 1025 as well as forward the same on the Router….
Your Linksys Wireless-N IP camera is now ready to use.
If you want to enable the emailing feature for that you can refer the link:

  • Airport repeatedly drops

    Hello-
I'm having a very frustrating problem with my Macbook. When I am at home, I can usually connect to our wireless network fine. However, sometimes the connection status goes from full (4 bars) to none (0 bars), and then comes back as full, and then goes off again. This process keeps repeating. I run network diagnostics and I go thru the whole thing, select airport and my network, but when it gets to the DHCP or PPoE section, a little pop up repeatedly comes up saying "A network change has been detected" as the airport signal goes in and out. After several runs of network diagnostics, it starts working fine again (usually). Another thing, this usually happens in the evening (I don't know if that has anything to do with it). If anyone could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it. It's a very annoying problem

My wife has this problem on her MacBook Black 2.0GHz.
I can't find a fix to it but I have two workarounds to keep the airport connection going:
1 It always stays up when the MB is plugged in to the mains power.
2 Fire up the terminal and set a ping going (ping -q www.apple.com) seems enough to maintain the connection.
I have observed that you can recreate the problem as follows:
When running on battery and not using the ping trick above if you navigate to any web page, once the page has loaded the AP signal will drop out a couple of seconds later, then come back again. This is really annoying if you're constantly going between pages as you'll get the 'You're not connected to the internet' error.
I've tried just about everything I can think of to fix this including Zap the PRAM, reinstall Mac OS, run fsck in single user mode, change all of the network settings, change wifi settings etc.
    My setup is as follows:
MacBook black 2.0GHz with 2GB ram
    Mac OS 10.5.4
Netgear DG834GT router (provided by Sky Broadband)
The other computers on my network don't suffer the same problem, it seems unique to the MB. Please sort this out Apple!

  • Conflicting Network Signals

I have been struggling with my Airport network
    for a few days now. I have a G5 and a G4 Powerbook
sharing an internet connection. The Airport is connected
to the cable modem. The G5 is connected to the Airport
by Ethernet. The G4 has the Airport card.
The problem started when I turned on printer sharing
on the G5. I wanted to be able to print on my one
printer from both machines. Thats when my ability to
reach the internet quit on both machines. I have since
got the internet connection working on the G5 but still
can get it working on the G4.
The strange thing is that in the network preferences on
the G4 it tells me in the Network status thatI am
connected to the internet with the Airport.
Network Connect shows that I am just connected to my
personal network not the internet. All apps say there is
a problem connecting to the internet, check settings.
Now when I use Network diagnostics it shows green
lights on the Airport, Airport settings and Network.
When I get to the choice of networks it does not
show my network (which is secure) but it shows
my neighbors, which is secure also. I put in the
info for my network and get to the DHCP window
I have 2 choices, DHCP and PPOE. There is nothing
for DHCP with a manual address. So I choose DHCP.
It then asks me to turn off my cable modemwhich I have
turned off (for 15 minutes) and on. Then it tells
me it cant fix the problem and my network light
goes from green to yellow. Network Status now goes
from green to yellow telling me that Airport does not
have an IP address. This eventually changes back to
green when I go into the TCP/IP screen and give the
G4 the local address that it has usually had 10.0.1.3
which it keeps changing to a real address (via network
diagnostics when I choose DHCP I believe).
All this time I am unable to use the Airport admin utility
or the setup assitant because both report a "error"
trying to read the configuration file on the Airport.
Thats about it, my mind is getting tired from having to
keep going over this. I would apreciate any advice
from a different perspective, which is what I think
that I need now. Thanks in advance

    FINAL final update.
Well after an '" fortunate break" I have finally got this
problem solved. I was up late putting in a new hard
drive in my G5 when I stumbled on the original OS
install disc for my G4 (OS10.1). Which is just what
I needed to run the Airport disc. Of course it never
is really easy. OS 10.4 will not let you downgrade
to 10.1 so I had to start thinking again. So I thought
I have a HD that has a partition that I could sacrifice
for the cause. Bam back in business again. After
spending this much time on this it had become
personal. I was not going to let my machines
get me to surrender. I also found some hardware
diagnostic discs for the G4 also, so I ran that
first and found the laptop was in good shape.
    So on to the Airport.
So now I was going back in time a bit. I am
impressed with how far the OS has come in
just four major upgrades. After getting it finally
all installed I fired up the new version of the Airport
Admin utility and more bad news the same error
keeps raising its ugly head. I thought now it time to
call the ISP. Since this is the equivelent of a scoping
of the lower GI for the Airport I thought this was a little
    overdue now.
The first ten minutes were spent on the phone with
(on no say it isn't so) A COMPUTER!!. It had a nice female
voice though so I kept calm thinking she might actually
get to the bottom of this. After she ran into some
"technical difficulties" she finally gave up and let me
talk to a real person. After about 15 minutes of therapy
detective work with a pleasant gentleman named Mark
I got the information I pretty much knew anyway,
something was up with the Airport. So I hung up and
decided to give it one last try and presto it worked.
Like nothing had ever been wrong. I am not sure what
was wrong except the error reading the config file.
It doesn't matter really. I think I learned a good lesson.
Dont Ever Give Up!!! I would like to thank the 100
people that dropped by to at least check my problem
out, I know there was no easy answer to this. God
is working with me and I am still a work in progress.
When the stress of a situation gets to be a bit much
I have learned to back off and step away from it for a while.
I can always take that time to write a few lines to my
favorite forum and see how everyone else is doing.
    Until nextime, Phil

  • Airport Extreme connected to HN9000 hughesnet

Here is the history of this question
    1. Buddy got HughesNet
    2. We hooked up DLINK DGL-4500
    3. Had issues due to ip address conflicting between hughestnet modem/router and router
    4. Changed ip address of router and all worked.
    5. Bought Airport Extreme
    6. Hooked it up
    7. Seems like same issue but having problems trying to change ip address of router to not conflict.  Tried changing ip range for DHCP then get other errors.  Everyone says the HN9000 handles DHCP and NAT, however when I look at the status of the HN9000 it shows DHCP disabled?
    8. The main issue after setting it up is DOUBLE NAT.  The Airport Extreme shows blinking yellow instead of green.  You can still access the internet but want to solve the DOUBLE NAT issue.  Which I think is related to the airport extreme router ip address being the same as the HN9000.
What settings should I use on Airport Extreme?
INTERNET - DHCP or STATIC?  Guessing this should be DHCP since we don't have STATIC IP from ISP.  I believe this indicates how the router should get IP address from Modem.
NETWORK - DHCP and NAT or DHCP or PPOE.....  I believe this means what the router should perform for clients.  Default is DHCP and NAT.

Two wireless routers in close proximity to each other will definitely increase the likelihood of wireless interference occuring between them.
Unless you really need the FIOS wireless network, it would be a good idea to turn off the wireless function on the FIOS router.
How you do that is really a question for FIOS support, not Apple.
In general, you would type in the default IP address of your FIOS router into your browser.....something like 192.168.0.1, for example only. FIOS support will have the correct IP address to use...or...it might be on the back or bottom of the FIOS router.
That will  bring up the configuration interface for the FIOS router. Look for a wireless tab or a wireless page. From there, it is a simple matter to disable the wireless function on the device and save the changes.

  • Is the equipment compatible with Huawei SmartAx MT882 Modem?

There is no internet access when Airport Express is installed. The PC says that Airport Express is installed and ready.

I see... because for DSL connections, it's supposed to be either DHCP or PPOE settings.
Here's the link to setting up a router with a DSL ISP.

But if it's already working with you, I guess that's fine.  but I'm posting the link just in case you may need it in the future.

  • Loosing internet connection/ asking PPoE/DHCP (sbcglobal)

    HEy all,
Trying to help my mother in law. She's pulling her hair out on this one!
    - Last night I helped get back online by calling sbc (ATT) tech help and they walked my through a PPPoE set up. She was up a running and happy as a clam!
    - Later in the night she launches Safari and the is no connection.
    - Clicked on "diagnosis" and she is eventually asked if "are you using PPoE/DCHP.
    - PPoE route takes her to a restart of AP and then says there's a problem and contact the ISP.
    - DHCP route works and she can gets on the net.
    - She went through this several times with no connection again and going through the same steps as above.
Should she be on DHCP and NOT PPoE??
    Any help here?
    Mahalo,
    Dooki

OK folks, my mother in law is just about bald! This morning she started having the same problems: No connection, diagnose, has to select DHCP. Sounds like the settings are NOT keeping and she has to go through this every time she logs on to the net.
    -MBP/Leopard
    -Sbcglobal.net
    -Speed Stream 5100
    -Airport Express.
    Thanks all,
    Dooki

  • Configure DHCP for Airport Extreme to see PPoE on a Nyxel DSL Modem?

I would like to configure DHCP server for an Airport Extreme to see PPoE on a Nyxel DSL Modem?

Please perform factory default reset on the AEBS as follows:
Pull the power plug from the back of the AEBS
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you plug the power back in to the AEBS
Release the reset button and allow 25-30 seconds for the AEBS to restart to a slow, blinking amber light

  • Cannot find PPoE host, can connect to router but not internet

I've been having trouble since I tried using the router. At first, I had no security, then I set up the security and couldn't connect to the router. That finally solved, sometimes when trying to connect to the router, I get the message cannot find PPoE host. But, my connection continues to show that it is strong in the bar at the top.
So, I try to get on the internet -- Safari, Firefox -- no go.
I run network diagnostics and the first three settings are lit, but the ISP, Internet and Server all show as failed.
I'm connecting via airport and a linksys router.
    Thanks for any help

You'll have to go into your router's settings and make sure they're correct. When you connect to the internet through a router, the router has to be set up with the appropriate IP information (like setting it for PPPoE). If you have set your router up properly, then all you have to do is connect your Mac to it, either wirelessly or over ethernet, and it should auto-configure if you have your Network settings on "DHCP" (not the manual DHCP, though). You will get an IP address assigned by your router if it worked.
Hope that helps. Networking is always confusing.
