DHCP, OSX and Dlink Router doesn't get anywhere

I'm a Mac newbie. I have a cable modem, a Dlink 713p wireless router. I'm running OSX 10.3 on an old iMac.
ACT 1: I have a few PC's running wireless to this router without a problem but, when I connect my cat5 cable to the iMac via built-in ethernet port, I get no connection to the router with DHCP (or manual setup for that matter.) The corresponding activity light for the connection on the router blink at a constant 1 sec on and 1 sec off rate.
Here's what Dlink say on their tech support page about hooking up a Mac to this router:
How do I configure my Mac to work with the D-Link gateways like the DI-704, DI-707, DI-713 and DI-713P?
Use the following settings in the TCP/IP control panel.
Step 1 Go to the Apple Menu>Control Panels>TCP/IP.
Step 2 From the Ethernet drop-down menu at the top of the control panel select Built-in if you have a built-in network card or Other if you have installed a network card in your computer.
Step 3
Configure : Using DHCP Server
IP address : 192.168.0.xxx
Router address : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
* If you are not getting an IP address from the residential gateway, you can configure the gateway manually.
Connect Via :Ethernet-built-in
Configure : Manually
* You will now be in a screen that will allow you to enter in the settings manually.
IP address: 192.168.0.12
Router address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Name server : 192.168.0.1.
I followed this and I still got nothing.
ACT 2: I have a Linksys USB100m, a USB ethernet adapter. I've read that some people have had this working without any problems with OSX and running it without specific drivers. Yeah, that's some people and it doesn't include me.
The system info show that the Linksys adapter is found but there is no way to configure it for the network (choices are built-in ethernet or built-in modem.) When I connect this to the router I get a constant blinking activity light.
What am I doing wrong???
imac indigo, 400, 640mb ram, 30gb Mac OS X (10.3)

I'm not sure if this applies to your early iMac but there is a known issue with the one I have, originally a 266mHz tray loader. Its ethernet port works but fails to autonegotiate properly with some routers. IE it never gets past deciding to to run at 10 or 100 speed. I tore my hair out for a while with this issue since I knew my iMac worked just fine on a crossover cable with an older Mac that only ran at 10 speed. That was actually the key. The solution was to put a cheap used 10 speed only switch between the iMac and the D-link router. That way the iMac did not hang at trying to negotiate speed since there was only one option. Now it all work just fine.
PS. does anyone know if you can get a simple switch or hub that can be set to only do 100 speed and not offer 10 as an option? That would allow my iMac to talk faster on our local network.

  • WRT54G wireless is trying to load but doesn't get anywhere!

I have a macbook and a WRT54G with the latest firmware (just updated) and my router just stopped working out of the blue.  With airport on, it says I have full signal level and its logged into my account...when you attempt to load a page, it just keeps trying to load but it either doesn't get anywhere, or takes 10-15 minutes to load a little bit of the site (google).  Hard connection from comcast modem works fine so I know it isn't my Internet connection.
I also have a hard line from the WRT54G to my DirectTV box, which I connected to my macbook and that doesn't work either, so I think I've eliminated a wireless only problem.  Do these things just crap out sometimes or am I missing something?  I tried with tech support and they couldn't seem to help.

When you Hardwired your computer to the Router are you able to Browse Internet on your Computer ? Since you have upgraded the firmware on your Router, have you Resetted your Router and Re-Configure all the settings on it back again. If not then Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Airport Express problems with new MAC MINI and DLINK router SOLVED

Hi just thought I would post this as it may well help others experiencing similar frustrations with new core duo mac mini and wireless connection or quality problems across the network / internet etc
I have a 3 week old, new mac mini core duo 1.8ghz 2gig ram, 120gb disk - First Mac, connecting to my exisiting wireless network via DLINK ADSL Router 2MB Broadband also one windows laptop and pc also wireless on the network and two airport express potins to stream itunes to
    Problem was briefly
Mac worked fine, but the network connection just far too slow, laptop and pc, 1800+ kbps downstream mac mini 90 - 150kbps (http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp)
also if i ping the router directly from terminal (ping -c 20 192.168.1.1) average response 12+ ms with 20% packet loss, yet laptop and pc avg 2ms no losses
Spent 2 evenings on frustrating calls of more than 1 hour each (due to being cut off , then ring back and closed etc etc) and carrying out a the helpdesk troubleshooting (I am an IT consultant I think I am above this level), eventually an archive and install of the os as well
last night I call for the third time, insisting I dont wish to carry out any further troubleshooting, and want it replaced and resolved or my money back
I receive a call back from product specialist (not sure if thats mac mini specialist or airport) but we resolved the issue (his knowledge far superior to the help desk do this do this attitude)
between us we carried out the folowing and resolved the problem and I am now very happy
mac now downstreaming also in excess of 1800kbps (as expected for 2mb broadband)and no packet loss
This problem was resolved by switching off the turbo option hidden away in the routers settings, under wireless configuration
Supposed to improve performance, but its rubbish and will make hardly any difference under mac os to the speed but will certainly affect your mac mini performance(you may have a similar setting switched on in your routers and mac os dont like it)
We stumbled across this by first disconnecting one of the airport express devices from my dlink network, and using it on its own default apple wireless settings, effectively making it a standalone wireless network, and not via the dlink router
we then carried out the same ping with the ip address of this device (from airport admin utility default 10.0.1.1) and the results were fantastic 2ms avg no package loss
this established it was something with the router, and how we then interrogated the routers settings and found the turbo on option within wireless configuration
you may not be able to replicate this if you dont have an additional network you could join (such as airport express), but probably worth checking your own router settings for something similar
Hope that may be of assistance to others, sorry that its a bit long winded and garbled, but I'm just so excited to finally get my new mac working as i would expect it to
Also perhaps insist on speaking to a product specialist immediately that the helpdesk are unable to help you

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Can't Connect to Internet using AirPort Extreme Card and DLink Router

I have tried just about everything, but I can't seem to connect my MAC OS X 10.3.9 to the internet. I am using the Airport Extreme Card and no networks show up. I am trying to connect to my DLink router. I was told by DLink that it is compatible with AirPort Extreme cards, but the guys at Best Buy were unable to connect to their wireless routers, other than their Mac Router. Please let me know if you have a solution! Thanks

  • Timecapsule and Dlink router together?

Can I buy the timecapsule, add it to my existing wireless network (disabling the router functions and just using time capsule to back up to wirelessly through my dlink router?)?
In other words, i want to plug the timecapsule into my 16 port gigabit switch, and then use a macbook air with timemachine to back up to the hard drive in the timecapsule.
I assume this is the only way to do this or can I just buy a external USB drive, plug it into my NAS and then access it via time machine and save a bunch of money?
    Thanks

Both Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme base station have what's known as bridge mode, which disables the internet sharing and means it'll play relatively nice with your existing router. Page 36 of the linked guide should hopefully explain it.
I don't think you can access a NAS drive and use it for Time Machine, though you certainly can with an Airport Base Station or Time Capsule connected to a USB disk. Obviously you can also just use an external drive for Time Machine, though wireless is kinda nice, providing you do the first backup via Ethernet.

  • Is it possible to turn of DHCP server and still route?

I would like to use my airport extreme as a router but have another computer be the DHCP server. It looks like if I turn on routing DHCP turns on and there is no way to turn it off.
    Thanks for any help.

That's pretty unfortunate. It seems like a pretty normal thing to do. So I am going to have to have a separate router just because airport extreme doesn't support this. Seems like most of the routers out there do allow this.
    Thanks.

  • Macbook and DLink router?

ok so soon i'm going to buy the macbook. I want to have wireless internet but from what i've read it doesn't seem that the airport express has very good range and its quite expensive. So i was wondering if anyone had this router and how well it works with the macbook http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7650455&type=product&productCatego ryId=pcmcat25300050001&id=1134699413343

A friend of mine has that router and I connect regularly to it with no problems at all.
I use Netgear myself, but since the D-Link is cheaper and just as good - buy that one instead.

  • HT4972 I am trying to update my iphone 4S which has ios 4.2.1 and update either to ios 5 or 6. have got the latest itunes but everytime I try to update through itunes it doesn't go anywhere, it gets stuck on backing up. help?

I have the latest iTunes, but it seems to get stuck on the back up stage; its not that it can't back up as it happens every time I connect, but when I click upgrade to ios 6, then it suddenly takes a long time and eventually just doesn't go anywhere. even left it running overnight but didn't happen. Just doesn't take the next step of uploading the operating system. help would be greatly appreciated, have been trying to do this for two days now

  • AC701 PCIe doesn't get enumerated on workstation?

    Hi,
I am testing PCIe interface of AC701. To test I am following xtp227-ac701. I downloaded rdf0225-ac701-pcie-c-2015-1 from site. I downloaded the bit file from ready_to_download to my AC701 board. After plugging in the board in PCIe slot and booting up the workstation. I don't see Link up LED glowing. Rest of the LEDs are working fine. Also when I type lspci in shell , I don't see Xilinx device listed there. My workstation has mother board ASUS P7H55-V and I am running fedora 18 on it.
Similarly when I downloaded the bit file from rdf0276-ac701-base-trd-2015-1, I see the same status of LEDs, (link up =0, Rest are functioning as indicated in UG964). Any suggestion?
    Regards
    Abdul Basit

    Ok,
This  is how I setup for PCIe.
Workstation ASUS Rampage II Gene (Intel X58) (Recomended for PCIe TrD)
2 Different borads of AC701(BIST is passed for both boards).
Bit files(mcs for flash) for PCIe example design present in ready_to_test folder in rdf0225-ac701-pcie-c-2014-2 and rdf0225-ac701-pcie-c-2015-1.
Bit files(mcs for flash) for PCIe target reference design present in ready_to_test folder in rdf0276-ac701-base-trd-2014-2 and rdf0276-ac701-base-trd-2015-1.
    Jumper settings J12=3,4
    switch settings sw1= 001, sw2=0000
After loading mcs file for all designs mentioned above, AC701 is plugged into workstation. But none of the time PCIe link is getting up (LED for PCIe link up is not glowing) and hence PCIe doesn't get enumerated . what else I can do, I have done all recomended steps. I believe that these are golden things and they should work flawlessly. But to my disapointment I couldn't even see these working.  Please help me out here.
    Regards

  • TS3274 After few minutes of charging my ipad 2 it's coming on and i can see the Apple logo but it's not going passed that and the battery is not getting charged

Need help with my Ipad 2, after few minutes of charging the ipad comes on, i can see the apple logo and stops there and the battery doesn't get full charge

Have you tried rebooting the iPad?
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If the iPad will still not turn on completely, then you should probably restore the iOS software.

  • USB Hard Drive suddently doesn't get enough power

    Hi there,
I'm using a Iomega Hard Drive, which has two USB connectors: the main one, and if it doesn't get enough power a second one.
Until now, I could use my hard drive with only the main one, but not anymore. If I plug both, it works though.
(When I say "now", I mean that I realised it today, but haven't been using my drive for a week or two, so it follows an update during that time, I guess).
Is that a normal / desired behavior?
    Is it a kernel setting?
Is it possible to set the power of USB ports?
Thanks for any explanation / help.
    Cheers,

Thanks, that's a usefull, detailed answer!

Ok, first thing, why are you doing anything with WAMP or XAMPP when you're running a Mac? MAMP should be what you want unless you're not explaining part of what you are trying to do.
2nd thing, I haven't used MAMP in a while, but there are two possibilities for not seeing what you want to see once you have MAMP turned on. One possibility is that you already have "Web Sharing" turned on in your Sharing Preference Pane. If that is the case, port 80 will already be taken and you'll be seeing the default Apache install (files are stored at /Library/WebServer/Documents/). This would push MAMP to either not turn on it's web serving capabilities, or to push it to another port. The other possibility is that MAMP defaults to another port anyway. So instead of localhost, you might have to type in localhost:8080 or something similar. I believe the control panel that gets installed can take you to the currently MAMP-served page, and it can also help you change which port your serving on.
80 is the default port for web serving and the ONLY port that will let you get straight to the server without having to type in webaddress.com:port# instead of just webaddress.com.

  • How to DHCP port forward on Dlink Router

    Greetings,
I have 3 computers on a LAN. Powerbook G4 (Mac OSX Server 10.4.11), Macbook Lepoard (OSX 10.5.2), and Windows XP. I have Dlink Wireless Router (DIR-625). My Powerbook is connected to router via ethernet cable. the others connect wireless.
i want to use Powebook G4 running server to act has DHCP Server, and NAT. Currently, I setup Dlink to act as a Wireless Access Point by turning of router's DHCP server. I assigned Powerbook a static IP address then turned on DHCP server with DHCP ranges. (no overlapping). Then I assigned Dlink a ip address outside of the range. I turned off everything. Then turned on devices in this order.
    1. Router
    2. PowerBook
    3. Other computers
When I check my Macbook connection. It self-assigns IP and does receive DHCP from Server. I checked all settings. But no luck. Is there another way to do this? should i be port forwarding instead?
