DHCP Server 2008 R2 Scope Full Warning

Is there a way to disable DHCP Scope Full Warning message from flooding my event logs? We use DHCP to lock down the ports at our office. Is there some registry setting I can do to prevent them from writing to the event logs so often?

Hi,
Thank you for your post.
Is there a way to disable DHCP Scope Full Warning message from flooding my event logs?
No special way to disable only DHCP event log. If you want to disable DHCP event log, you have to disable all system integrity events on your server.
To display the current audit policy for all subcategories, run command:
auditpol /get /category:*
To disable system integrity events on your server, run command:
auditpol /set /subcategory:"System Integrity" /success: disable  /failure: disable
Since your DHCP scope pool reach full, you need to re-subnet your DHCP scope or extend your DHCP pool. Please refer to this
thread.

  • Best practice for DHCP Server 2008 utilization of IP Addresses

I am currently using 85% of addresses on my DHCP server running windows 2008 Server. Does microsoft recommend a particular percentage (%) of its utilization before building another scope? Or what is the industry's best practice or microsoft's
    recommendation to build another scope?

    Hi,
As far as I know, there is no standard for the
usage of DHCP scope. Just make sure that the IP address pool isn’t exhausted.
For the best practices of DHCP, please refer to the article below,

  • DHCP-Server (2008 R2) is not updating Reverse-DNS-Pointer

    Hi there,
we have a 2008 R2 DHCP running. The DHCP is using an user which is member of "DnsUpdateProxy"-AD-Group to create, update and delete DNS-entries. Also the Option "Always dynamically update dns A and ptr records"
    is set!
Now I have a strange behavior, that the Forward-DNS-Entries are created and updated correctly, but not the Reverse-Entries. There are no Errors in the DHCP-Log regarding problems with registering DNS-entries...
    What should I check?!
    Regards
    Miranda

    Hi,
    Thanks for your share.
In general, DNS Reverse Lookup Zone is not created automatically. In addition,  does the Reverse-Zone you mentioned mean DNS Reverse Lookup Zone? If yes, I am sorry to say that I have never heard a way can achieve that. Maybe a script or command can
    do that.

  • Out of available IP addresses on one DHCP server, will other DHCP servers field the request?

I have three WinServer 2012 R2 domain controllers that also act as DNS and DHCP servers.
I have a guest wireless network that has its own subnect, 10.121.176.0/20
We have our DHCP scopes split this way across the three domain controllers with a DHCP lease time of 1 day
    Domain controller 1, 10.121.176.11 - 10.121.181.255 for a total of 1,525 addresses
    Domain controller 2, 10.121.182.0 - 10.121.186.255 for a total of 1,280 addresses
    Domain controller 3, 10.121.187.0 - 10.121.191.254 for a total of 1,279 addresses
This gives us a total of 4,084 addresses to hand out on our guest wireless network which is plenty. I just looked at each servers stats and this is what I see
Domain controller 1 - 717 addresses in use, 808 available
Domain controller 2 - 900 addresses in use, 380 available
Domain controller 3 - 1280 address in use, 0 available
On domain controller 3 I am seeing lots of DHCP events
Event ID 1063 - There are no IP addresses available for lease in the scope or superscope "GuestWireless-176
Event ID 20287 - DHCP client request from 28E14CE87EFB was dropped since the applicable IP address ranges in scope/superscope GuestWireless-176 are out of available IP addresses
    Two questions:
Once Domain Controller 3 rejects the DHCP request since it is out of addresses, will this request be fulfilled by one of my other two domain controllers?
Is there any way to even out the leases on these DHCP servers? Not sure the mechanism behind a client choosing one DHCP server over another

1 yes, the dhcp server who's scope is full will not do a dhcp
    'offer'
2 dhcp that answers fastest with a 'offer' will win. A delay is configurable (but changes nothing
about the root scenario were the fastest will win)
Note that if the scopes overlap on the servers, they might not lease out all the addresses in the scope.
I would enlarge the scope as you will want to fence against unavailability of one of the servers (or a network connection for that matter). you currently have more addresses leased out than any set of two of your servers can offer.

  • Server 2008 R2 parent & server 2012 R2 Additional

    Hi Dears
Following is the infrastructure of my network
     DC+DNS + DHCP - Server 2008 R2
    WSUS - Server 2008 R2
    WDS - Server 2008 R2
    SCCM 2012 - Server 2008 R2
    VPN - Server 2008 R2
    Domain Functional Level  2008 R2
Recently I install server 2012 R2 as additional DC and then transfer FSMO and DNS and DHCP to it and disconnect 2008 Server from my network but I notice after that the WDS & VPN & SCCM not working good,
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

    Hello,
to exclude DC-domain problems please UPLOAD:
    ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.log [from each DC/DNS Server]
    dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.log
repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.log  ["dc* is a place holder for the starting name of the DCs if they all begin the same (if more then one DC exists)]

    ADREPLSTATUS
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30005 can also be exported to file.
As the output will become large, DON'T post them into the thread, please use Windows OneDrive (https://onedrive.live.com) [with open access!]
and add the link from it here. Also the /e in dcdiag scans the complete forest, so better run it on COB.
Have you assured that all domain machines use the new DNS server as preferred on the NIC settings?
Are there any other DNS servers configured on the machines NICs, ISPs one or your router?
What does "not working good" in detail mean? Please post error messages or event viewer errors related to this description.

  • Windows Server 2008 - How to remotely manage account passwords?

I'm hoping to get direction on how to remotely manage 'user accounts' on Windows Server 2008 machines.  The remote management would be from an automated perspective.  For example, I have a custom application (maybe C#, Java, etc) that runs on one
server that makes connections to various 'Windows Server 2008' servers; and I want it to be able to do the following.
Query Windows Server 2008 box for full list of user accounts
    Update password for user account
    Lock account
    Unlock account
Check policy information to find out when password may expire
I'm trying to find out what may already be available and running on Windows Server 2008 that I can take advantage to get this done programmatically.

  • Can't get DHCP server to give out correct subnet IP's.

    Hi all,
I recently added a VLAN to my SG500X switch.  I have the devices communicating between the VLAN’s (using static IP’s).
I setup the new DHCP subnet on my Windows 2003 server but I can’t seem to get the DHCP server to hand out IP’s from the new subnet.
From what I understand, the Windows DHCP server is supposed to detect which VLAN the request is coming from and hand out the correct one.  If I plug a laptop into one of the untagged switch ports for the new VLAN I get an IP address...but it's from the original/primary subnet.
Do I need to configure anything else on the switch?  It seems to be handing out IP’s on the primary subnet/VLAN just fine.  I just need it to hand the correct one.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Everyone has provided you good info on what to look into so I will just try to give you some background info as this topic threw me for a loop back in the day when I was studying for my CCNA.  It never was really explained how the dhcp server knew which scope to assign from.  It works like this assuming the dhcp server is not inside the broadcast domain of the client.
1.Client with sends a DHCP request broadcast message
2.Access switch receives untagged frame from client with destination mac of FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
3.Access switch encapsulates the packet into a frame that includes the vlan ID that was configured on the access port the client was connected to. Lets say vlan 10
4.Frame is forwarded out all interfaces in the same vlan or trunk interfaces except where it was received from
5.Your router receives the frame from the trunk port.  You either have an SVI or subinterface configured on the L3switch/router that is listening for traffic from that vlan.  That SVI/subinterface will have an IP address on it.  lets say 10.0.0.1/24.
    SVI
    int vlan 10
    ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0
    ip helper-address 192.168.1.50
    Router
    int f0/0.10
    encapsulation dot1q 10
    ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0
    ip helper-address 192.168.1.50
6.Here is were the ip helper comes into play.  The router inserts the source IP of the SVI/subinterface for that vlan into the packet and sends it to the dhcp server. So 10.0.0.1 ->192.168.1.50
7.DHCP server receives and chooses the scope based on the source IP in the packet.  so in my example the dhcp server will look through it's configured scope and would find one for the 10.0.0.0/24 network.
    8. DHCP server sends the dhcp offer to the IP of the SVI/subinterface which then forwards it on to the client.

Upon review of Microsoft Support online, I found the following article which illustrates a few options:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255999/en-au
What would be the logical choice for us, having the 10.x.x network?
Ideally, it would be good not having to re-subnet anything if possible, or re-create the scope.
Would a scope extension require a reboot of the server? Never done this before, so thought I should ask.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that DC prompts an warning event ID 1020, indicate 83% full with DHCP scope.
By default, the threshold value for firing of event 1020 is 80%. Estimate devices number, contrast with the number of IP address in this scope, if the percentage is less than 80%, you may try to reduce the lease duration and decrease the cleanup interval.
This can help to speed the reclaiming of expired scope IP addresses.
    To reduce the lease duration:
1.At the DHCP server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click
    DHCP.
2.In the DCHP console tree, right-click the scope you want to configure, and then click
    Properties.
3.On the General tab, under Lease duration for DHCP clients, type the new lease duration.
To use a Netsh command to set the cleanup interval time:
1.At the DHCP server, click Start, click Run, type
    cmd, and then press ENTER.
2.Type netsh dhcp set databasecleanupinterval <NewInterval> (where "NewInterval" is the amount of time in minutes between DHCP database cleanups).
As an existing DHCP scope, its subnet mask can’t be changed. If the Start Address and
End Address do not currently include all addresses for your specific subnet, you can increase the number of addresses in the scope by extending the
Start Address or End Address in the scope properties. This operation needn’t reboot.
If neither of above 2 suggestions is applicable, new a DHCP scope or reference
KB255999 (resubnetting and superscoping). At the same time, you need to change your network topology.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition and Full Text Indexing

Hello, we have recently upgraded our web front end server from SQL Server 2005 (Standard Edition) to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition (in conjuction with upgrading our main production servers to SQL 2008 R2 Standard). We have 12 Databases on our production
SQL Server that are replicated to our web frontend server to the SQL Express instance. One of these databases has a FULL TEXT INDEX. The production database is running the Adobe iFilter version 9 64Bit. The FULL TEXT CATALOG has been created and populated
and performs searches as intended. However, upon replication, when using the search option on our web page based on that PDF iFilter, it no longer works. After examining the properties of the FULL TEXT CATALOG, we note that the Catalog size on the subscriber
end is 0MB in size (whereas it is 3MB on the Publication side). Also the Unique Key Count on the subscriber side is '1' whereas on the publisher side it is 30,000+. After examining the FT Indexing logs on the subscriber side shows an error: "Warning: No appropriate
filter was found during full-text index population" On the subscriber side which is running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition, Adobe Reader 10.1.1 is installed (all 32Bit) with the Adobe iFilter AcroRdIF.dll. When running the SELECT
    * from sys.fulltext_document_types T-Sql statement, the list returned shows the PDF filter to be installed and shows the correct path. Under the System Environment Variables, that path has also been installed (from previous recommendations in researching this
problem). After numerous reboots, service restarts and re-attempts to get the FT Daemon to crawl - no success. Can anyone please help with this problem? Is there something I am missing? In an attempt to work around this problem thinking there might be a version
conflict between the 64Bit version on the publisher and the 32Bit version on the subscriber, I disabled the replication of the FULL TEXT CATALOG and tried to create a new catalog on the subscriber with the same results. Thank you for your answers in advance
    - Fustrated! Sorry, somehow this got posted originally under Server Design

Hello Jeff hope your still out there.  I wrote this question 2 years ago and upgraded to SQL Express with advanced services.  Full Text replication worked until last week.  We are operating in a virtual environment.  My publisher box
is a Windows Server 2008 R2 (64bit) with SQL Server Standard Edition.  My Web front subscriber is a Windows 2003 R2 (32bit) Server with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1 with Advanced Services. Now the exact same thing is happening after 2+ years.
We are looking for possible updates that might have broken this but I am stretching that.  Any clues please?  32bit vs. 64bit?

  • Adobe PDF iFilter SQL Server 2008 R2 Full Text not working

Unable to get the SQL Server 2008 R2 to index PDF files for full-text searching.
    Environment: Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise 64-bit, SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP3 64-bit, Adobe Reader 11.x
Installed PDF iFilter 64 (11.0.01) from

Added its folder (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 11 for 64-bit platforms\bin\;) to the PC system Path variable. Rebooted PC.
Confirmed SQL Server sees the Adobe PDF iFilter ..... SELECT * from sys.fulltext_document_types where document_type = '.pdf'
Inserted PDF files to my table (see below for CREATE statement).
The SQLFT log says  ... Warning: No appropriate filter was found during full-text index population for table or indexed view '[TestDB].[dbo].[pdfifiltertable]' (table or indexed view ID '2105058535', database ID '7'), full-text key value '1'.
Some columns of the row were not indexed.
Installed other filters for Office. Added files of type DOC, XPS. Confirmed the search query works for those file types. So as such SQL Full-Text is enabled and working.

  • Testing moving to new Windows Server 2008 R2 DHCP Server.

    HI all,
I want to bring up a new DCHP server on an existing Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller.  The current DHCP server is a Windows 2003 Domain Controller.  I have moved all the FSMO Roles to the new 2008 R2 domain controller
with the plan to eventually demote the 2003 server and take it off the network. I have the dhcp role installed on the new Windows Server 2008 R2 and have duplicated the exact settings (reservations, scope, etc.) from the old windows 2003 server
on the new 2008 R2 server.  My plan was simply to disable the dhcp service on the old windows server 2003 and then authorize the new Windows Server 2008 R2 DHCP Server.  However, after reading several articles, I understand that once you authorize
a new dhcp server, the old dhcp sever is unauthorized.  I also read where several people had major issues with the new dhcp server not handing out IP Addresses even though the new dhcp server was authorized successfully.  Since this is
a production network, I would like to employ the correct method to bring up the new dhcp server.  Also, if there is a problem, is there an easy way to go back to the original dhcp server?  Thanks for your help.
    FD
    Bob Andres

You can authorize multiple DHCP servers on a network.
You can activate and deactivate different scopes independently. So you can test DHCP functionality with a test scope.
Also, you can stop the old server in many ways that allow it to be online very rapidly: stop the dhcp server service, deactivate the scopes and yes even de-authorize the server.
My advice would be to built a test so you are confident (=very important) and not to fear the final onlining too much. DHCP is no rockets science. If you've replicated the configuration and are aware of possible IP Helper configurations on your routers/switches,
it should all work out fine.

  • New 2008 R2 DHCP server will not hand out IP addresses

    We've recently migrated our Domain Controllers to 2008 R2, Virtual Machines. (DC3 & DC4).
DC2 is an older 2003 box, 32 bit, set for retirement.  All former roles have been moved to DC3 & DC4, including FMSO roles, and the server (DC2) has been demoted.  The only service that remains on DC2 is DHCP.
I've used NETSH to export / import the DHCP info to DC4.  All reservations have transferred ( Printers) and the scope shows "active" on DC4 and authorized, and running, but whenever I shut DHCP down on DC2, DC4 doesn't start handing out
    IP addresses to clients.
Even after rebooting a client multiple times, running ipconfig /release & /renew, it never finds the new DHCP server, nor does the server show any client information in the address leases. (other than reserves)
We have a Cisco ASDM deployed, but DHCP and DNS are both disabled on this device, so I'm not sure IP Helper would be an issue here.
Since both my new DC's are 2008R2, do I need to elevate active directory up to 2008 function before DHCP will work?

    Hi,
Is the issue resolved? As suggested by
Wyatt Miller, you can check if it was caused by IP helper.
In addition, is the new server authorized?
Here is a migration guide for you:

    Hi Friends,
Recently couple of days ago we have migrated from DHCP Server ( Windows Server 2003 R2 32 ) to Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit Virtual Machine.
After migration, most of the scopes seem empty, no Address Leases appeared in the scopes even most of the reservations also not appeared from DHCP MMC but the client machines obtaining IPs and DHCP VM is working fine.
After investigation I have found following event log errors.
Are these event log errors related to this Issue and what will be problem. Please advise.

  • Error 0x80070643 when installing DHCP Windows Server 2008 ENTERPRISE SP2 64bit

When I try to install role DHCP on Windows Server 2008  I get the following error:
Attemp to install DHCP Server failed with error code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation.
                 Please somebody help me!....
                Jorge

    Hi Jorge,
I am sorry to hear that.
Here are a few things that I suggest you try:
Grant Full Control for SYSTEM, NETWORK SERVICE and Administrator on C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\networkservice folder.
If you have Windows Process Activation service installed on the machine, uninstall it.
    Open required RPC ports.
    More information for you:

If the issue still persists, please check the event logs to see if there are any related error messages and troubleshoot accordingly.

  • Migrating DHCP Server From OpenSuse to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

    Hello,
I'm planning to migrate a DHCP server from OpenSuse to Windows Server 2008.
Is there any procedures for that ,Or should i configure my Windows server 2008 DHCP service again.
    Thank you

    Hi,
I have done somthing similar in the past. Basically i got exported all the scopes and settings from the linux dhcpd service, then created the scopes in Windows, stop linux dhcp service and start windows one. Use conflict detection setting to leverage any
    IPs lease from linux server.
    Hope it helps.
