Diagnose a Invalid String/Buffer Length
Hey everyone,
If someone could help me out with this, I would greatly
appreciate it. I have included the code and linked to the database.
I continue to get this error no matter I do. The most frustrating
thing is that it only tells me that the error is on line 66. Well
line 66 tells me nothing. Hopefully someone else can figure it out;
I sure can't.
Database
I often get this when I have manually amended an insert or
update form, and it is simply due to me missing a value either in
the form or in the insert code. It may even be that you have copied
a line of code and not changed the name of a text box or the
Request.Form insert code that relates to the db column.

1) Crystal Report 2013 doe snot install any SDK. Thus the assumption is that you are using CR from teh following link:
SAP BusinessObjects - SAP Crystal Reports, Version For Eclipse Download
2) Since you are using a 64 bit connection (Oracle Client 11g 62 bit ODBC driver) you will have to make sure you are using 64 bit JVM. Otherwise, follow Dell's advice and use a 32 bit ODBC datasource.
3) On one test you are using Oracle Client 10g 32 bit ODBC driver and the other you are using Oracle Client 11g 64 bit ODBC driver. You might want to see if you can run your app using Client 11g 32 bit ODBC driver.

Error: "Invalid string or buffer length" when using SQLColumns!
I am calling SQLColumns through the Oracle ODBC driver to get the column information of a table. The Client version is 9.0.1.0 and the ODBC driver version is 9.0.1.8. If I am querying a table that does not has a long table name, fine; if I am querying a long table name, failed and reporting:
[Oracle][ODBC]Invalid string or buffer length.
Tried with MS Oracle driver, no problem. Anybody can help?
Thanks in advance.the name is very long, like 'aaaabbbbccccddddeeeeffffrrrrdddaaa'. Maybe more than 20 charactors. I haven't find the exact number, before which SQLcolumns works, after which SQLColumns stop working.

Hi there.
I am about to publish a book in English and Chinese.
What does this error means?
Line 20 column 57: character content of element "language" invalid; must be a string with length equal to 3 (actual length was 7) at XPath /package/book/metadata/languages/language"
And where is line 20, column 57?
Thanks folks!Go into iTunes Producer and select from the dropdown, don't type.

Edited by: Purvik on Aug 25, 2009 11:59 AMThere is not a chance in the world, especially not knowing column definitions that I, and I suspect most anyone else, is going to wade through this much unformated code looking for an error you couldn't bother to copy in full.
Either tell us, specifically, the line on which the error is occurring or, better yet, start whacking stuff out of your code until you find the offending definition. That is certainly what I would do. Commenting out sections is a marvelous way to quickly find an issue.

ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
please help me in this regard. unable to trace the issue.
Thanks in advance
Regards,
rajThe error message should have included a line number for you to reference back to your code to know what line the error was occurring on.
That said, look at the documentation for SUBSTR as you are using the third parm incorrectly. It is length, not end position. That's your issue. -
OLAP -- ORA-6502: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
Hi all,
We got installed Oracle 9201. After applying the patch #2761332 (to upgrade up to 9203)
and interim patch #2897078 (9203 Patch 1) we always get OLAP Catalog invalid.
I've tried to mend this problem by doing all it is said in Notes 23268.1 & 226443.1 but
my effort was worthless. OLAP catalog is still invalid though BI_Checkconfig says is okay at all.
Nevertheless, we can create dimensions, cubes and measures well, but other problem arises when
I try to add a dimension to a cube issuing the following command:
cwm2_olap_cube.add_dimension_to_cube( owner, NAME, owner, DIM_NAME);
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
ORA-06512: at "OLAPSYS.CWM2_OLAP_MANAGER", line 380
ORA-06512: at "OLAPSYS.CWM2_OLAP_MANAGER", line 397
ORA-06512: at "OLAPSYS.CWM2_OLAP_CUBE", line 281
Paying attention to other metalink/otn threads about this subject we found similar problems with
Oracle 9203 in Japanese (keeping in mind we use Oracle in Spanish).
Any patch we can apply? Any ideas? Your comments are welcome ...
Thanks in advanced !!
[email protected]We have fixed the problem !!! :-DDD
Thanks to all Oracle analysts who replied this issue.

Whay are there so many variables joined together?

WWV_FLOW_WORKSHEET_CONDITIONS - ORA-06502 character string buffer too small
Hi,
I am currently working on a application that can upload CSV files inside many tables. Since I hate reinventing the wheels, I have decided to reverse engineer APEX and APEX APIs that are used by the SQL Workshop to upload CSV files to a single table. Since this feature was tested many times by many developers around the world, I know I can trust the code. If in a future release of APEX those packages are modified, I'll have to update my abstraction layer to call my own packages instead of APEX packages. (This is not an issue for our team.)
First Step
Use apex_040000.wwv_flow_load_data.create_csv_collection to create an apex collection with the first 20 rows of the csv file. At this step, we can validate the format of a sample of the file without loading all rows of the csv file.
Second Step
Use apex_040000.wwv_flow_load_data.load_csv_data to upload all rows of the csv file inside a table.
Third Step
Do whatever you want with the data inside the table. (i.e.: Send the data into multiple tables...)
Here's my problem..._
After the first or second steps, I display the data using interactive reports. I want to highlight every cells containing "invalid" data. I use apex_040000.wwv_flow_worksheet_api.add_or_update_highlight. When I have too many invalid cells, the IR doesn't show at run time, and you can see ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small on the page.
I would like to know the limitations of IR using the table WWV_FLOW_WORKSHEET_CONDITIONS. Is there a way to create many highlight conditions inside a single row of WWV_FLOW_WORKSHEET_CONDITIONS ? I want to find the best approach to add hundreds of conditions.
Thanks

Bug: Report Column based on LOV character string buffer too small error
When using a column type of "Display as Text (based on LOV, does not save state)" with a result set that is rather large causes a character or string buffer too small oracle error.
See the below page for an example.
The example page below has a single report off a table called "HUGE_TABLE" which has two columns: display and code
Code contains a number between 0 and 100000.
Display contains the number in code appended to a block of text.
When I display the report with no Display As Text (based on LOV does not save state) it displays fine.
If I make the "Code" column display as text based on LOV and make the LOV
"SELECT display, code FROM huge_table"
I get the error you see on the page.
http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=32149:1
Thanks.Thanks for your help Scott.
So from what I've gathered from my own tests and the discussions you linked me to the LOVs based on SQL queries are being converted into "static LOV" strings before being used.
As such they are limited to the PL/SQL VARCHAR2 max size of 32767
Which means given the static reduction of the string 'STATIC:' that we have 32760 characters left.
Which is where your SUM( LENGTH( display ) + LENGTH( return ) + 2 ) comes in.
In short, if:
sum( length( display ) + length( return ) + 2 ) + 7 > 32767
would evaluate to true then you have a problem. :)
I'll use this to track down my problems and switch them over to inline queries.
Thanks.
Cheers,
Joe -

Edited by: k_17 on Oct 13, 2011 12:07 PMHi Helios,
Many thanks for your reply.
I am able to figure out the issue. In the code we have
l_analysis_report := l_analysis_report ||'<tr><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.analysis_name
|| '</td><td align="center">' || curr_refresh.start_time || '</td><td align="center">'

'</td> </tr>' || UTL_TCP.CRLF;
exit when length (l_analysis_report) > 32500;where "l_analysis_report VARCHAR2(32767);"
The issue is report has more characters, and when executing it throws the error " ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small ".
Can you please let me know how to have more characters/data in the report. Will CLOB help if yes, please let me know how to use it.
Kindly suggest some options.

Hi All,
Hope everyone is doing great...
I have issue with one of the procedure which sends out status email for the reports. Below is the code.
It worked fine from last six months but today it failed because of the length of characters (more reports are added).
The variable "l_an_report" is VARCHAR and it has crossed it limit so gave the below error. Not sure how to handle the report so that it includes all the data.
Also please let me if this is good solution :- Have the report status in excel sheet and attach to the email.
If its fine please let me know how i can achieve this and any prerequisite from network team we need to get?
ERROR :-

ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small

The error is because you don't check the length of 'l_an_report' until it is already too long.
This code checks the length AFTER adding to it.

l_an_report := l_an_report ||
'<tr><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.report_name|| '</td><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.RUN_TIME ||
'</td><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.STATUS ||
'</td><td align="center">' || UTL_TCP.CRLF;
exit when length (l_an_report) > 32767;
>
You need to test the length of the new string to be added to make sure it won't cause 'l_an_report' to be too long
-- add a new variable in the declare section
v_new_string VARCHAR2(2000);
-- in loop do calc
v_new_string := '<tr><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.report_name|| '</td><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.RUN_TIME ||
'</td><td align="center">'|| curr_refresh.STATUS ||
'</td><td align="center">' || UTL_TCP.CRLF;
-- test length
IF (length(v_new_string) + length (l_an_report) > 32767 THEN EXIT;But as others have said if you need to handle lengths > 32767 then use an attachment as shown in the links provided. -
ORA-06502: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
I have a stored proc with a parameter pio_med_rec_nbr patient.med_rec_nbr%TYPE
where patient.med_rec_nbr is a varchar2(12) .
character set is we8mswin1252 semantics are bytes
the stored proc retrieves max(med_rec_nbr) into nTmp( number) from a reference table
and does pio_med_rec_nbr := lpad(TO_CHAR(nTmp),12,'0')
which throws the ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too smallwhen I check the length, I get length(pio_med_rec_nbr) = 12
I can pass one digit or null but no more. Any idea what I need to do to debug this? I can do xxtmp := lpad(TO_CHAR(nTmp),12,'0') where xxtmp varchar2(255), so I know the assignments are okay.
Thanks,Do, pio_med_rec_nbr := trim(lpad(TO_CHAR(nTmp),12,'0') )

Looking for Regex library to generate valid/invalid String
Hi-
My project use MDA (domain object are specified from an XML file) and we generate the domain, transfer object, DAO, services and controllers, flex controller, flex services and flex .as files.
Now we want to generate the Unit Test Case. Of course, we can't cover everything. What we can cover is most domain fields validation, such as length, max value, min value and perhaps regex matching.
So, what I'm looking for is a library that allow me to generate a valid and invalid String based on a given Regex pattern. So far, I have found Google Xeger, which only allow me to generate valid String based on the Regex pattern. I'm also looking for a library that will allow me tpo generate invalid String for a given regex.
Anyone know of such library. I really don't want to parse the Regex to come up with an invalid String (as I am not strong in Regex).T.PD wrote:

Now we want to generate the Unit Test Case. What do you think you're going to check with a <b>generated UnitTest</b>?
The only thing you can check is the that your Code Generator generates a bunch of Classes (the Tests) the same way like another bunch of Classes (the production code). So unless you wrote the Code Generator: What does a generated Test tell you about the corerectness of your Domain Model?
IMHO generated tests are nothing more than a placebo...
bye
TPDYou are correct, but it probably doesn't matter. Plenty of people create (or in this wacky case: generate) unit tests because it is company policy that unit tests are there, not because you write them to support your development efforts.
Example: the company I work for has a whole legion of "PL/SQL developers". In other words: people who write endless amounts of SQL procedures. Company policy goes in effect: all code should be covered by unit tests. Result: unit tests that insert a record and then check if the record is inserted. Unit test that updates a record and then checks if the record is updated. I try to explain to such people: you can be pretty sure the database works, you don't need to unit test it. Blank stares.
