Diagnose stuttering?

Hello,
there is some strange behaviour of my laptop which makes me think it is ill. It is a kind of stuttering. Don't get me wrong, I can do my work with it normally, but I think my system isn't running perfectly.
Symptoms:
1. Jackd is reporting xruns. They occur quite often. About 50-70 times while playing the guitar for about 30 minutes. Furthermore the 'RT' sign in qjackctl is flashing on and off instantly every 1-2 seconds or so. Of course the realtime options is enabled. The preferences are set such that there is a delay of about 20ms.
2. When executing 'ifconfig eth0 down/up' or changing the network profiles with netcfg2 while moving the mouse, I can notice some mouse cursor stuttering.
3. When watching a youtube video in Firefox it (the video) is often stuttering 0.5-1s at the beginning while noticing harddisk activity ( Flashing LED).
I never cared about the last two points but since I played around with Jack it is starting to bother me.
I don't know if these symptoms are caused by the same problem. But my first thought is that is has something to do with disk access. It seems logical to me that while writing to the harddisk the system has to stay in sleep meanwhile. So I changed to deadline scheduler, but it doesn't really improve the situation. Moreover if disk access would be the reason it would be the same for all the other Jack Notebook users.
Maybe you experienced similiar things or know a solution for this.

ok, at least Jack is doing better now. Don't know why, I just play around with limits.conf, /etc/pam.d/su and deleted the content of /dev/shm directory.
Now the settings are the same as before, but  I'm getting far less xruns and luckily without these disturbing plopps.

At times I am also experiencing the stuttering and crackling issues in the 7.0 update that has been recently released. The following information can be useful in temporarily correcting this problem until Apple comes up with a patch to resolve this issue. If you choose to proceed with implementing this information then you assume any liability that may occur during your attempts at using and applying this information. This information has so far suited any needs that I may or am currently having to date personally.
1)Quick Time Preferences – In the Quick Time Preferences\Audio tab check to make sure that the settings are at the default level. Your platform may reflect a different khz Rate. On my platform my default level will be the following:
    Rate: 44.1 khz
    Size: 16 bit
    Channels: Stereo (L R)
When I listen to my music I like a good quality stereo sound so I have my audio sound routed from my laptop to my CD or Video jacks in the back of my stereo. Stereo System: Pioneer SX 251R Receiver. External Speakers: 2 - 8 ohm Yamaha.
Make sure the Safe Mode box is unchecked. Close the Quick Time player. Now, when you begin experiencing the stutter problem there are two immediate steps that you can try to correct the problem:
1)Stop the stream or the music that you are listening too and restart the service each time that the event occurs, (In my case the events that have been occurring has not been consistent when they do occur. Close monitoring in place on all connection ports. Running Snap In’s deployed: IPSec Monitor/MMC Console– Currently monitoring IKE and IPSec Statistics for any changes. To run this snap in properly the Event Monitor must be in the running state and actively logging events in the Administrative\Event Viewer Folder) I will also be configuring Dr Watson to generate a Stack and Dump file log to the desk top in the event of an unexpected occurrence. or,
2)If that does not correct the problem then try the following: Go to the My Computer folder and open it up. When you have done so, Right click the Local Disk and enter the Properties section. When the Local Disk Properties box comes up, enter the Tools tab, in the Error Checking section, place a check mark in the “Automatically Fix System Errors” and click start\yes. Back out of that and close all running programs including firewall in the tray next to your clock and reboot the system.
Once you have rebooted run the Disk Cleanup utility and the Disk Defragmenter utility. While we are using the Disk Defragmenter lets take an extra step to insure that we defragging the hard drive volumes as much as possible. Click on the analyze button a second time. If there are any entries in the box highlight the first entry and run the Defrag utility a second time.
Tip! If you would get in the habit of running defrag process regularly on a daily basis it will help improve the overall baseline performance of your machine.
Last Step: Open your player and try again.
If you are still experiencing the problem and it hasn’t leveled out to your satisfaction then there are two additional steps that I have personally used or am currently using that may help with your issues. The steps will involve installing a small batch file program and a hot fix patch.
User Profile Hive Cleanup Service– (Batch Program) Open your Browser and type in the following address: www.microsft.com once the page has loaded look for the search bar in the upper right hand corner of the page. In the search bar type in the following: “User Profile Hive Cleanup Service”. Once the search result page comes up click on the first result to bring up the proper download page. Before you can use this batch program you will be required to go through a short validation process before you can download the program. The validation process is to ensure that you are running a genuine windows platform.
    Overview
The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.
On Windows 2000 you can benefit from this service if the application event log shows event id 1000 where the message text indicates that the profile is not unloading and that the error is "Access is denied". On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 either event ids 1517 and 1524 indicate the same profile unload problem.
To accomplish this the service monitors for logged off users that still have registry hives loaded. When that happens the service determines which application have handles opened to the hives and releases them. It logs the application name and what registry keys were left open. After this the system finishes unloading the profile.
Once you have downloaded and installed the batch file close all running programs and reboot. Now, ‘This is important”, lets determine if the batch file is properly running after installation. Go to Start\Help and Support. Once the Help and Support Center comes up click on the following link: “Use tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems” under the “Pick a task” section. Once the page has been loaded in the left hand pane click on the “Advanced System Information” link. Once that page has been loaded click on the following link: View detailed system information (Msinfo32.exe).
Once the System Information box is loaded look in the left pane and open the Software Environment Tree and click on the following link: Windows Error Reporting. If the batch program is properly running you should see the following entry: “User profile hive cleanup service version 1.6.30.0 started successfully
&#x00a”. The ending symbols may be different on your platform.
Now, we want to go to another location in your system to verify this entry and that this service is properly working again. Pull up your “Control Panel” and enter the “Administrative Tools” folder. Once there enter the “Event Viewer” folder. Then enter the “Application Folder”. If the service is properly working the following entry will be logged: User profile hive cleanup service version 1.6.30.0 started successfully, Event ID 1001. If for some reason this program is not functioning properly a different error code other then the Event Id 1001 will be generated and logged in this folder. Also if one is generated you will want to verify if it’s a genuine error. To do this you need to go back into the help and support center Advanced System Information link and click on the following link: “View the error log”. If anything goes wrong a corresponding general entry that was logged in the Event Viewer will be logged in this link verifying that a problem had occurred. All of the information in the logs will be useful in your trouble shooting efforts. To date I have not had any measurable conflicts to occur while using this batch program to date. Closing Overview: when this program engages it will target itself at the Kernel System only at shutdown and startup. A corresponding entry will be made in the folders that I have described above stating that the program had started or failed.
System Restore Feature and USB Device’s – Event Viewer\System and Application Folders\Event ID SR 1 (Hot Fix Patch) – I have noticed that some folks are loading and unloading iTunes in attempt to correct problems. Also, I see by the forum board that a lot of folks are having a lot of problems with their iPods. Think about this for a moment, iPods will have their own unique set of drivers to operate from. I am going to attempt to explain an experience that occurred with me last year on this issue. When working with USB Devices it is important to keep your eyes on the Event Viewer folders for the following event id being logged: Event ID SR 1. This is especially true if you are using your System Restore Feature. The main folders that you want to keep your eyes on are the “System\Application” folders.
I have not witnessed any specific Software Applications generating this code in general at this point in time. But when it comes to Software and USB Devices I have personally experienced a situation that did cause a SR 1 entry last year. Example: My wife has Sevier medical problems. When we travel I keep a USB Flash Drive on my key chain with her medical information installed in case of an emergence. The Medic Alert E-Health Key was a new device that came out that had bugs that needed resolved just as with iTunes 7.0. The short of the story is that the flash drive was conflicting with the System Restore Feature, which led to additional problems such as conflicts in the Add/Remove Utility. I could not properly unload the Uninstall .Dll files when trying to uninstall the flash drive itself using the Add/Remove Utility. During a conversation with a Microsoft Support tech I was informed that other unloading issues had also been identified in the Add/Remove Utility. I could be wrong but I think there is a patch available that would help with unloading issues while using the Add/Remove Utility. To keep an eye on any possible loading/unloading issues that I may have while using the Add/Remove Utility, I use the following program to determine if there any issue’s that I need to deal with: (30 Day Trial Program-Fully Functional)
    http://www.mikasalonen.com/remove/?remove40
Program Name: Remove 4.0. All of the information you need to know about this program will be summarized in the provided link. If anything: USE IT !!!!
NOTE: This SR 1 patch is only a temporary hot fix. They are suggesting that we wait until the next Windows XP service pack release that contains the hot fix.
    Article Id : 888402
    Last Review : June 01, 2006
    Revision : 1.5
Also keep this in mind. The only time that you want to become concerned about the SR 1 issue is when you notice an increase in the number of SR 1 entries in Event viewer logs. If you are logging two (2) or more events then I would begin investigating the problem. Again, In my case the System Restore Feature was identified as the initial cause of conflict when the conflict first occurred when loading the USB Flash Drivers. So, if you suddenly notice this entry in the Event Viewer then you can pretty much bet that you are experiencing a USB issue that is conflicting with the System Restore Feature. But there is a Hot Fix available to temporarily resolve this issue as I have stated. Go back to the Microsoft link that was provided. When the page loads, in the search bar in the upper right hand corner of the page type in the following KB 888402. Be Advised – if you have to resort to this measure you will have to contact the Microsoft Support Team directly by phone to receive this patch.
When you talk to the tech you will need to provide the following information: A brief description if the Event being generated in the Event Viewer as well as a brief description of the problem that you are having. Once the tech has verified the information he/she will e-mail the hot fix to you in a zip folder if I’m not mistaken.
    System and Third Party Drivers
Drivers can be another source of conflict that can have a direct impact on how your system operates. I have already given you an example of this in the System Restore/USB Devices section. They can also cause unexpected stability issues. In addition to that malicious Root Kits and Trojans can download drivers on your hard drive without your knowledge further complicating matters. So, before I close this information out let me show you how we can quickly gather and display a listing of all drivers that are currently installed on you hard drive by using a very simple program. (This program will be a 15-day Trial program).
    Program Name: My Drivers 3.11
With this program you will be able filter out all preinstalled drivers that came with the system at the time of purchase, thus exposing the remaining Third Party drivers and as well as the Unknowns. If you know what your doing I would take this time now and disable the drive(s) in question if removal procedures are deemed necessary once you have obtained the driver listing. My overall objective with this program is to immediately determine if there is anything out of the norm with the drivers overall.
A download link is unavailable at this time. The web site appears to be under construction at this time.
As a final step on this issue I suggest keeping an eye on the Device Manager for any sudden “Yellow Warning Symbols” appearing within the Device Manager Tree Structure.
Print this information off and us it as a reference point. Any new helpful hints that I can think of will be posted as soon as I can squeeze the time in.

  • Firewire diagnosis utility?

Does anyone know of a utility application that can diagnose a firewire chain of devices? I have a chain of three Firewire 800 hard drives that have their own power supply. While I'm not getting any errors in read/write to the drives I am wondering if the iMac's power supply is just not up to snuff.
So what is the problem you might ask. I'm trying to eliminate the use of external Firewire drives regarding iTunes audio stuttering/skipping. This has been suggested as a possible issue by AppleCare support.
I also have a USB drive plugged in and USB speakers. I don't always have those running, but I suppose this further taxes the iMac's power supply.

  • Relatively new iMac slow and stutters all of a sudden

I've been through all of the forums (I think), but nothing i've found seems to do the trick. Please bear with me, because i know that this is a common post, but I'm frustrated.
    My symptoms are:
    1. Machine seems to have intermittent freezes and spinny ball. Not total lockup, just stuttering.
    2. Programs take forever to launch (compared to before)
    3. File saves take forever (compared to before)
    4. ALL video and motion apps stutter (quicktime, youtube, eyeTV, moving cursor on garageband, final cut)
    5. Takes forever to shutdown/restart (compared to before)
The machine is still usable, for the most part, but NOT usable for anything video at this point.
    My machine specs:
    1. 2.8 GHz 24" iMac (mid 2008)
    2. 4G RAM
Things I've tried to diagnose or fix it:
    1. Restart: didn't make a difference
    2. Repair permission on disk: didn't make a difference
    3. Disk repair on boot volume: didn't make a difference
    4. Ran the cocktail system and disk maintenance scripts: didn't make a difference
    5. Monitored activity with Activity monitor and unix "ps" during the problems: didn't see anything stick out
    6. Looked through the console and system logs: nothing stuck out
    7. Have run the h/w diagnostics from the OS X disk: no issues
    8. Have reset PRAM/NVRAM: Had a scare here, because i did this, and then the machine would NOT start back up. Just got the white screen (pre-apple logo and spinner), and it sat there forever. Had to do #9 below to get it back.
    9. Reset the SMC: Well, it allowed me to actually boot the thing, but didn't make any performance difference.
    10. Performed general cleanup of the HDD to purge anything not needed: no help
    11. Drank Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock: Helped me, but not the machine.
Notice I have not yet tried to reinstall OS. I can't imagine why that would work. The problem here should also have nothing to do with any recently installed app, since nothing has been installed. The only thing that may have been installed would have been an Apple update (OS or other). Not sure i can pinpoint this to an Apple update because I don't when exactly the problems started in relation to the updates.
Any ideas, or places to look?
    thanks

    Hi John
Before doing a Reinstall or Archive and Install you might want to first download and install the 10.5.7 Combo Update to see if that makes a difference. The 10.5.7 Combo Update can solve minor issues within the OS X and would insure that your software is completely up to date.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1057comboupdate .html
If however you decide or wish to reinstall the OS X, an Archive and Install will save your data where as a Reinstall will wipe all your current data.

I also noted that a MacBook just showed up in your profile. If it's a PPC MacBook and you migrated to the Intel, you maybe having software compatibility issues.

  • Audio/Video stuttering/halting problem - mouse interaction

    Hi all -
I’ve been experiencing a problem since I updated my MBP to 10.4.8: stuttering audio and video. Any audio (iTunes, Flash w/ audio, Quicktime w/ audio) doesn't play smoothly - it halts for a few hundred milliseconds, plays, halts, etc. In some cases, it causes the audio and video to lose sync.
However, as long as I keep the mouse moving, the stuttering stops. Also, it matters which pointer device I use. I generally use an external USB trackball, and when that is plugged in, the audio stutters at a noticeably different rate than when the trackball is unplugged. If I am using the integrated touchpad, the stuttering is much worse (longer gaps in playback), but it’s still the case that as long as I keep the pointer moving, the stuttering stops.
From this, I conclude that it’s a mouse problem that is somehow interfering with A/V playback. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a different diagnosis and/or a solution?
    Macbook Pro 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Puzzling, the USB Bus would seem to be the most likely culprit here, are you playing back files from the internal drive or an external one ?
Have you tried removing / updating the trackball software ?
(I suspect something is hogging the bus cycles - trackpad, ball, mouse, isight, IR etc. are all USB devices)
In System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Trackpad have you got 'Ignore accidental input' checked or not ?
Maybe try a reset of Parameter RAM ? (Apple/Option/P/R at start and wait for three chimes before letting go)

  • Firefox is stuttering

    Hi,
My firefox has suddenly started stuttering for some reason. I havent installed or uninstalled any add-ons or software to my computer. I did a full restart of my computer and used the browser in safe mode but it didnt help. In the resource monitor, my CPU usage keeps spiking up and down but I cant seem to find out why. Could you please help me diagnose the problem? I have attached the info below during safe mode.
    Thanks!

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox (you need to close and restart Firefox).
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If it works correctly in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)

  • NB200 Stuttering Mouse

I have the NB200, purchased on the 29 July at Harvey Normans (Dublin). The issue I am having is one and the same as that which is currently under discussion on the Toshiba American forum, see http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/Keyboards-Touchpads/NB205-N311-W-Touchpad-Issues/td-p/40901
(Now the American model is referred to as NB205, but other than a number change, I believe there is no other difference.)
The issue: the mouse stutters and freezes as you move your finger on the touchpad, i.e., not responsive to your finger movement. Enough to be more than irritating in constant use.
Now, I have been on to Toshiba support, and they say they have had no reports of such an issue in Europe, mine being maybe the first? Having been on to them on a few occasions, most recently this morning, we have tried several things, including reinstalling the driver (the pre-installed one was the most up to date as it happens), toying with the touchpad settings to make it more sensitive to touch, and going into Windows Task Manager > Processes and setting the 'Priority' on two pertinent .exe image names lister there to 'high'. I am sceptical as to whether any of this has improved the situation, I will see tonight what my experience is. Initial experience suggested such changes were not working.
The issue at the core is whether the problem is a hardware or software one; oddly enough I am told if it is a software issue and I return the netbook to Toshiba for diagnostic check, I will incur a cost as the warranty does not extend to software, EVEN if the problem is with the installed Alps driver! The suggestion I have been left with is to clean the machine and do a fresh install, confirm then the problem still exists, and if so, either go back to Harvey Norman or send to Toshiba for repair (if it is a hardware problem that is!).
As you will see from the American thread referred to above, the Toshiba admin in the forum acknowledges the problem and says there are investigating.
My question here: are others this side of the Atlantic having the same experience as me and can you shed any light on it? Would very much appreciate feedback, even a solution! I love this netbook except for this very irritating problem, and would hate to have to give up on it.
    Other information:
    a) I tested a usb mouse and it works fine, no problems.
    b) I tried with toshiba support on the telephone to test the touchpad in safe mode with no joy; the touchpad does not work in safe mode! The Toshiba technician on the phone tried with his netbook and had same experience in safe mode. He thinks this is an unrelated issue, but it did mean diagnosing the problem was not made any easier.
    thanks, Eddie

    hello.
    toshiba nb200-110 .
i have exactly the same problem. the mouse lags by half a second, does random stuff and often skips back/forward browser pages when on the internet- which is very irriating, especially after writing a long message/form (like this) and all is deleted.
have been on to toshiba support, and downloaded the new alps driver (out yesterday), which has made pretty much no difference that i can tell.
-- what i'm keen to find out, is what you have all done about this? continued suffering, or have toshiba given you brand spanking new computers?
have you found out whether it is a software of hardware problem?
I know that if I call toshiab up again, they will make me do the system restore, which will clearly do nothing. Then do i send it back?
--- also: Another issue: when I first got the computer, if it was moved an inch, a centimetre, or even a millimetre whilst it was on then a message would pop-up talking about VIBRATION DETECTED IN THE HARD DRIVE, SWITCHED TO SAFE MODE. is this normal?!!??! techically it does say not to move the laptop while it is on, but is this ridicuous or what?
FINALLY, I had read somewhere that someone thought the problem with the mouse was something to do with an oversensitive anti-shock mechanism?! does this ring any bells to anyone. If this was the case, this could explain both the mouse problem and the hard drive problems!?
what to do about this computer!!!??
    thanks

  • The sound stutters and everything freezes

there's something wrong with the sound on my computer, if i spend 30mins watching a video, the sound stutters annoyingly and my laptop hangs, i always have to restart it, some times this doesn't solve the problem.
It also happens when i'm on skype.... its a dv3 and i updated the driver recently, still no result. is it the sound card???
    PLEASE HELP

Perhaps your line's not configured correctly for Vision. I good place to start the diagnosis is to run http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ and cut and paste the results here.
2nd that. Try running it earlier in the day when things are OK and again immediately after you have a problem (but remember to stop the video on demand first as this will affect the result). Copy and paste both sets of results.

  • System stutters after inactivity

    Hello, Arch bbs,
Since setting the system up, there has been a persistent hanging/stuttering issue. When I stop interacting with the system for more than 10 seconds, coming back will yield it non-responsive for 3 or 4 seconds, at which point it will catch up.
Having something CPU intensive seems to prevent it. Playing a youtube video is enough to keep it "awake" and prevent the hangs, but that shouldn't be necessary.
The video playback solution suggests it's probably some power-saving system getting triggered erroneously, but I don't know enough to diagnose it. How should I go about tracking the issue down?
    Thanks people!
EDIT: I've been letting videos play in the background for a little while to test, and the issue is now presenting itself at random, including while typing and scrolling in xterm. I'm not sure what that means for me.

  • Strange micro stuttering in games with new keyboard

I recently upgraded my keyboard to one with mechanical switches and a much higher polling rate at 1000 Hz /1 ms.
After switching over to this keyboard, I'm getting strange fps microstutters in games. Not sure how to diagnose and fix this issue.
I've done some simple A/B tests with the same game and my old Logitech K120 USB membrane keyboard and the new keyboard also changing USB 2.0 ports even trying on 3.0 and PS/2 via a USB to PS/2 adapter, although the keyboard wont work via PS/2 (PS/2 hook is enabled via mkinitcpio and a regular PS/2 keyboard works).
With the old keyboard everything is buttery smooth with a high frame rate, the new keyboard causes strange stuttering in almost all games, although I have the same frame rates.
The new keyboard is a CM Storm Quickfire TK, which I'm assuming is putting out a hardware based 1000hz polling rate over USB?
Would there be anyway to lower the polling rate of the keyboard to test if that is the cause of the issue? Can only seem to find info on changing mouse polling rate.
The only other hardware connected to USB is a Razer Deathadder mouse running at 450 DPI & 500Hz, using the razercfg drivers from AUR.
I've tried lowering the polling rate of the mouse to 125Hz and also disabling razerd.service but the issue still stands.
Currently running Arch on a FX 6350 CPU, GA-970-DS3 Gigabyte board and a Nvidia GT 660.
    Any suggestions?

Since no one else has any idea, just a shot in the dark from me: you could try the linux-ck kernel from the AUR and see if it helps… It hugely increased the framerate of Serious Sam 3 for me, and also removed some stuttering in Bit.Trip Runner 2. However I have no idea what polling rate my keyboard has; most probably it’s just the usual rate because it’s not a gaming keyboard.

  • IOS 8 - Photos app bug - "stuttering" effect on Year view

    Hi Folks,
On the iPhone6 Plus 128GB with iOS8.1.3 (with 15000 photos inside several years go), I notice that when using the Photos native app in the “Year view” (yearly mosaic view), if I scroll up or down slightly fast, the scrolling that you get has a little “stuttering” or “jerking” effect, so the UI is not perfectly smooth in this view inside Photos native app.
Have you noticed it in your own iPhone's with iOS8.1.3. and also having a huge size photo callery as I have (>10000 photos spread in several years)? (I think that is it very important, because if you have not a huge photo gallery, probably you will not see the “stuttering” or “jerking” effect that I am describing).
I think this is a bug which impacts iOS User eXperience, which needs to be fixed.
    Thanks by your feedback!

    Hi Guys!
Any experience to share with us, please?
    Thanks!

  • 10.6.8 MacPro Bluetooth stuttering

    Problem description:
After upgrading to 10.6.8 and after some minutes working I realized my keyboard input was faster than the text appearance on screen. Sometimes I push a key on the keyboard and three or more times the letter appears on screen. Then I noticed the mouse movement on screen was stuttering, not constantly, but sometimes more, sometimes less; but no serious work possible. If I switch off Bluetooth and switch it back on, I have a few minutes for normal behavior of my Magic Mouse and keyboard, but then same problem again. Urgh.
    What I've done so far:
    - Repaired permissions
    - Deleted both devices from the list of known Bluetooth devices and registered them again
    - Deleted the bluetooth.plist
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Reset the SMC
    - Installed the Combo Update for 10.6.8
    - Switched the channel of my Wireless base station (tried every single possible channel)

    Hi Sven,
I guess I found a solution that works (so far...):
    - deinstall all your blouetooth devices
    - delete everything saying bluetooth in library/preferences
    - reinstall 10.6.8 as combo update
    - reinstall your bluetooth devices.
    Best,
    Björn

  • Audio is stuttering in iTunes and Finder

This is a long post, sorry, but I want to try and be specific as possible. I am stumped, frustrated and at my wits end... any advice/help would be killer!
So, idk what happened, but as of a few days ago (3 to 4 days) my G5 has been stuttering (for lack of a better description) when playing back audio via iTunes or through the Finder window. The 'stuttering' is multiple pauses throughout a song... like 50+ times, making it choppy and unable to play straight through. It's maddening to say the least.
The weekend before Xmas, some Diet Sprite was accidentally spilled in the front of my machine while I was not home. Apparently the machine made some beeps, 'smelled funny', yellow and red LED lights turned on and the machine was promptly unplugged. When I came home 3-4 days after the spill, all was well with the machine until a few days ago when this audio problem started.
I thought perhaps being that the RAM is up front in the machine that the soda could have corrupted the RAM. I ran the Apple Hardware Test with the DVD install disc that came with the computer and 3 hours later, the RAM (as well as all hardware) passed. Same when I ran Tech Tool Deluxe. When I ran Disc Utility, everything checked out fine too. System Profiler recognizes all the RAM as well.
Some things to take into consideration:
-I can use Adobe CS2 Suite apps perfectly. No performance issues at all.
-I have a 2TB RAID external HD which houses my music that iTunes feeds from. Even if I play audio via the Finder window from music files on my Desktop, it still 'stutters.' So it stutters no matter if the audio file resides on the external HD or internal HD.
-I have NOT tried playing music through my iTunes with music located on my desktop HD. I have about 400+ gb worth of music and being iTunes is as slow as it is, call me lazy, but I don't want to discard my library and reload a few albums to see if the 'stutter' problem doesn't happen.
-Music playback is PERFECT if I stream my iTunes to my PC laptop or any other laptops in the house. No 'stuttering.'
-After I ran the Safari update, this problem arose (to best of my memory)
Specs of the computer are: G5 Dual 2.3ghz + 5gb RAM running 10.4.11 with no available updates to install.
Again, if anyone has any idea or anyway to possibly solve this, I'd be forever grateful. Thanx!

Open up Console in Applications>Utilities, watch it for errors when these stutters occur.
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

I've got an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:
    2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    OS X 10.8.1
Problem is, at random times, my Mac would just shut down and then restart after I clicked through the "gray your Mac shut down without telling you because it's selfish" warning screen.
I took it to a local computer shop and they couldn't really tell, and suggested I do a clean install of Mountain Lion. I did that, got everything back on from Time Machine (just Documents and Music, no Libraries per the technician's instructions), and then last night it did it again. Restarted while I was working on a web site. No notice.
I wondered if someone could help me diagnose the problem or problems(s), since I can't make ANY sense of the sytem report.
Here is the complete system report when the panic occurred. Thanks for ANY help at all you can provide.

Well, Logmein was completely uninstalled, and it did it again a few minutes ago. Restarted unexpectedly. Here's the system report from this one.
Any advice? I see the LogMeInSoundDriver is in the list, but I completely uninstalled it, so I'm not sure what that's referring to.
    Thanks!
    Kevin

  • Lightroom CC stuttering when no internet connection on Surface pro 3, is there a fix?

    Hello,
In order to see if the creative cloud for photography is suitable for my need I just downloaded the Lightroom CC (6) free test version.
I used to work previously on Lightroom 5.7.1 retail version (which is working perfectly) on my Surface pro 3 (i5 8gb ram).
Problem is, as soon I launch Lightroom CC with the WIFI disabled for battery saving on mobility or just no internet access, Lightroom CC is unusable due to  micro-stuttering every 20-30 sec approx.  Browsing the catalog, adjusting pictures, everything in fact.
I tried to uncheck the GPU setting as I see in different forums, but no differences.
After coming back at home, and as soon as I connect the WIFI, relaunch Lightoom CC. Everything runs smoothly...
I tried again the disable WIFI, restart Lightroom CC, stutters again from start.
Made 10 attempts of each, and every time I have an internet connection with wifi, everything runs smooth without stuttering, and every time I start the application without internet connection Lightroom do microfreeze (other apps runs fine, it's just LR CC).
Any ideas, cause for me this is completely a No-GO because I will not do tethering with my phone every time I want to use LR.
    Many thanks.
    Anthony.

    Hi, no clues?
Ok it seems  when I logout my adobe account id from lightroom CC (help => logout), LR is working smoothly without internet connect.
Is this normal that the application freeze for few seconds on a multicore device when I am logged, because it's trying to do account sync (none of my collections are sync by the way) or by doing licence checks on a free trial version?
    Is logout the only solution?
    Many thanks.
