Diagnosing a spinning beachball freeze

I am experiencing a repetitive freeze where the beachball appears while working in Firefox but it doesn't just take down Firefox. It spreads slowly from app to app until all apps are non-responsive. I can usually still move the windows around but that is it. Can not Force Quit or open Activity Monitor. Once I had Activity Monitor open when it happened but did not point to anything pulling an exorbinant amount of CPU cycles. Since it doesn't actually crash the system, no crash reports are created.
I do have an upgraded drive in it. A Western Digital 320GB model number WD3200BEKT-00KA9T0. It's been in there for at least six months with no issues until lately. Passes all Disk Utility tests.
How can I do some further tests on my hard drive to see if that is an issue? And is there anything in Console or anywhere that I can look at after restarting to diagnose the problem?

  • IMac keeps freezing up; spinning beachball and black screen

I inherited an iMac from my son. In the past week I have had the system freeze up at least 5 times a day. Either I get the spinning beachball and I can't do anything (no force quit, etc) and have to use the button on the back to turn it off or in the middle of something the screen goes dark and nothing I do gets it active again. Again, I have to physically turn it on or off. The latest was when I was in email and went to delete the message. It happens in a variety of applications.
I have Parallels loaded because I use it for Quicken, but it isn't running. I use it and then turn it off.
I am moving from PC to Mac and my PC never did this. I am rethinking my move.

The spinning beach ball is a kernel panic, the kernel is the heart of the OS. This can be caused by a number of things both software or hardware.
If you go to Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD (or the name of your hard drive) from the tree on the left, then select Repair Disk Permissions and let the repair process run until it is complete.
Once done, restart your machine and hold down the following keys: alt, R, cmd and P before the start up sound is heard. Keep holding until you hear a second louder start up sound. This clears the memory and resets the PRAM on your iMac.
Repairing permissions and resetting the PRAM usually resolves a number of issues.
If this fails to resolve the problem, an earlier thread discussed a similar issue and can be seen here:

  • Open/Save Dialog, 9 min. Beachball Freeze

I am running OS 10.10.2 on a March 2009 iMac with 8GB RAM and 1TB HD.
PROBLEM: While working in Illustrator 18 (CC 2014), if I choose File > Open, the Open dialog appears but I get the spinning beachball for 9 minutes before file contents appear. I don't have the same problem in Photoshop or any other app.  But after Googling, I see that a number of people have posted similar Console Log messages (see below) when using in a variety of apps in Yosemite, even in Apple's own Mail app.  This tells me the root problem may not be specific to Illustrator, even though it only affects Illustrator in my case currently.
    WHAT I TRIED:
    1) Moved all Adobe Illustrator related PLISTS and preference files and folders to the Desktop and then launched Illustrator.  I saw Illustrator rebuild new prefs files and all settings reverted back to stock.  This proves my moving of the prefs to the Desktop was successful to cause a rebuild of new prefs and PLISTS. Even so, the BeachBall freeze appeared when I did a File > Open.
    2) Rebooted with SHIFT held down (Safe Mode).  But the beachball problem remains.
    3) Disconnected all USB devices except keyboard/mouse, and turned off WiFi and BlueTooth, and even yanked my Ethernet cable.  I also turned off Time Machine and Default Folder.  But the problem remains, even through a reboot.
    4) I removed DropBox and GoogleDrive and I closed all apps other than Illustrator, but to no avail.
    5) Tried a Guest User, but that doesn't work with Adobe Apps.  Ditto for a Standard user.  You get an error dialog when you try to launch Adobe apps with that kind of user.  So I then created an Admin user.  Illustrator's Open dialog box displays files perfectly, as normal!  A NEW ADMIN USER FIXES THE PROBLEM!
So a new Admin user fixes the beachball problem in the Open dialog, but for my normal Admin user there's the 9 min. beachball problem.  And yet, SAFE MODE doesn't fix the problem while in my normal User.  And neither does deleting Illustrator prefs.  So it's clear there's still something lurking in my primary user account that is absent in the new Admin user account.  But what?  And how can I find it?  (Migrating everything to a new User account is no easy task.)

I get the exact same set of messages that you see above every time I try to reproduce the problem, simply by doing a File > Open in Illustrator.
I assume AFP is Apple File Protocol?  But what "server" is it trying so desperately in vain to "Get"?  And why is a DNS resolver being used?
Anyway, as you can see from the Console log above, the beachball in the Open/Save dialog in Illustrator goes away after 534 seconds (about 9 min.).  But it reappears each time I try to go to a new folder on my HD within that Open dialog.  Each time takes exactly 534 seconds each time for the stupid beachball to go away when changing folders in the Open dialog.
This beachball freeze (for 9 min.) in Illustrator's Open dialog occurred every once and a while over the last several weeks, but now it consistently happens.  And no, I've not installed any new software on my iMac other than Yosemite updates.
Once again, I would prefer to fix the root problem in my primary user account rather than migrate to a New User even though I now know a new Admin user account resolves the problem.
    Please help.

With regard to my cry for help...
    Pretty please?
Here are links to other apps which show the same Console Log messages that I am seeing, proving this is not an issue exclusive to a single app:
    Vmware & OS 10.10.2
    Pertaining to networked HD's
    Shared Mac on a Network
Prevents Time Capsule access and kills Time Machine too
OS 10.10 & Time Capsule woes
    OS 10.9.2 & NAS woes
    Yosemite & Time Capsule woes
    iPhoto woes after Migration
    More Time Capsule woes
Time Machine woes from Germany (translated)
    mDNSResponder stuck in restart loop
If you read through all the above like I did, you're probably very tired by now.  But if you had the same problem as I do, you would do anything to resolve it, hence my post here.  So again, I plead for your kind help and attention to this problem!
The above links do tell me one thing, that a "network error" is at the heart of the Console log messages and my problem.  And that remains true even when I've disconnected from the network entirely, leading me to believe that this is some sort of CACHING BUG.  For truly, there is a Time Capsule at my office, and I do use Time Machine (although not saving to the TC but instead to an external FW HD).  So...  It is my guess that Yosemite has cached some network data it doesn't like and tries to access that data from a cache when the Open Dialog appears in Illustrator.  But WHY ILLUSTRATOR in my case?  It makes no sense to me at all.  I would think it should consistently occur in the Open dialogs of all apps, but it's only in Illustrator.
I did have problems with my Time Machine backups after putting Yosemite on my iMac, but those issues were resolved in the 10.10.2 update.
In any case, if indeed it is a CACHING BUG, how then would I clear that stupid, evil cache?
Again, I would appreciate your kind thoughts and advice.
    Thank you!

  • Possible solution for spinning beachball in 8.1 update

After installing the 8.1 update, iTunes would simply freeze unless I either already had an active internet connection before launching iTunes or started one while iTunes was "not responding" - the beachball would disappear and it would suddenly work. I assume that the update contains some command to link to the iTunes store immediately upon launching - obviously that won't work if you're not online. I decided I didn't appreciate that feature and uninstalled 8.1 /reinstalled 8.0.2 iTunes version seemingly successfully. For anyone wanting to downgrade, here is what I did:
Followed directions in this Apple article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224?viewlocale=en_US
Additionally, I also trashed the following:
    1. HD - library - receipts:
    iTunesaccess.pkg v.8.1 and iTunesX.pkg v. 8.1
    (I left the old iTunes.pkg v. 6.0.4 in place)
    2. iTunes folder (Music - iTunes):
iTunes Library, Library extras.itdb, Library Genius.itdb, Music Library.xml
(I left the Album Artwork and iTunes Music folders in place)
I tried to find and trash anything and everything iTunes related that showed the date I installed the update so as not to "confuse" the installer and I wanted to create a new library so I wouldn't get the message that it can't be done because the library was created by a newer version.
I downloaded and installed previous version 8.0.2 - download here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_0_2_forMac
I then opened the newly installed iTunes and all I had to do was to choose "add to library" and navigate to the iTunes Music folder; all my songs were added within seconds.
Best of all, it all seems to work and I haven't experienced the spinning beachball. Mission accomplished.
    Hope this helps someone.

Sorry, but I can't really answer the ratings or playlists questions because I do not use either, so it wasn't an issue for me. But, since the Music folder stays, it may keep your lists; or you could try the steps, but not empty the trash so you could retrieve whatever it is you're missing. Another option would be what I sometimes do when I'm not sure if it's safe to delete things: I create a new folder(s), name it with the exact location of the item(s) I'm putting in it (i.e. yourname/library/application support/etc), and then copy it to an external. If whatever reinstall doesn't work, I can just delete the newly installed items and drag my old items back into the exact location they were in previously without having to guess where they belong.

  • USB External Drive Access and Spinning Beachball Crash

Over the last month that I have had my MacBook, the machine has experienced five spinning beachball crashes forcing me to manually power it down. First, the application I'm using freezes with the spinning beachball. Then, progressively other apps on the machine also lock up, where cmd-opt-esc and Dock-based force quitting do not respond. Eventually, the whole machine locks up, forcing me to hold down the power button to reboot.
I have been trying to figure out the pattern. It has happened once in OpenOffice.org, three times in TeXShop and once in Safari. I think the pattern across the five episodes is that the machine was trying to access my external USB hard drive to save a file (saving an already-open document in OpenOffice.org and TeXShop and printing a web page to a PDF document in Safari).
The drive is a Lacie 60GB USB drive, formatted AppleHFS, MacOS extended (journaled). Verification with the Disk Utility checks out fine, and I have in fact recently reformatted it to make sure.
I think the crashing problem is also related to this Console message, which recurs periodically:
    Jul 3 10:26:21 MK-MBCD kernel[0]: jnl: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5
I use the drive with my iMac G5 as well, where I have experienced no similar problems.
I would appreciate any feedback on how to troubleshoot this problem.
MacBook Core Duo / iMac G5 (iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Thank you for your reply!
The Lacie drive did come with a second USB cable to provide additional power. I don't know how you feel about those as opposed to power adaptors to provide additional power. The USB power cable is at my work, so I will have to wait until I go in to grab it and try.
For now, I've done what Lacie support told me to do. From my description they suspected data corruption. So, I have reformatted the drive. In the process, I have turned off the journaling on the drive. That appears to have at least stopped the repeated console message about journaling failure.
Have you heard if MacBooks' USB ports are more underpowered than PowerBook G4s'? I use the same Lacie drive with my PowerBook with no additional power without any problems until I got the MacBook...
Thank you again for your help!

  • Audio Encoding Spinning Beachball

I have had the same problem for over a month now. As I am typing there is a spinning beachball going during the audio encoding process. What is a reasonable amount of time? I started to burn a DVD at noontime , it is now 7:00 pm and still spinning. The project is 48 minutes long with chapter markers, ten transitions, a slow motion clip, sound effects, and a song in the drop zone. I have even upgraded to 10.4.6, purchased Quicktime Pro 7.1.1 and reloaded the latest iLife update 6.02. I used to burn a DVD with the same content in about six hours before the update. I don't know what else to try other than a new Mac........ I even re-imported the original movie from my camera-but the same beachball is spinning!!! I have tried every solution that was offered in the discussion area but the beachball keeps spinning. I'm at my wits end-somebody please help. After twenty years with Apple, this is the first problem I have ever had-I hope they fix this bug soon..... I am ready to drink heavily.......Have easily spent a hundred hours trying to fix this problem....

I have tried every solution that was offered in the discussion area
Well then this is probably stuff you've heard before but here goes anyway -
Audio Encoding problems come in three flavors:
    1) Vanilla - This is the most common - the "freeze" when encoding audio is normal, you get a spinning beachball, and even when looking at activity monitor iDVD and its helpers are "not responding." Solution? WAIT....and WAIT some more, wait at least as long as it took to encode the video, and iDVD will still often produce a great DVD. I agree it shouldn't work this way, but that's the way it works.
    2) Chocolate - Still pretty common, but a bit more trouble. Often caused by 12 bit audio, iDVD needs 16 bit audio. Try "extracting audio" in iMovie or export and reimport to tape after setting the camcorder to 16 bit.
    3) Pistachio - much less common. Could be other problems with your audio, such as CBR MP3s or who knows what....this is sort of the catch-all for other audio issues. Again, try extracting audio and/or exporting your iMovie to full quality DV. Convert CBR MP3s to AAC format.
Check other things in your project against this list:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=2466511
What is a reasonable amount of time?
As I said above wait at least as long as it takes to encode the video. But if I were you, I'd wait overnight just to rule out waiting as a solution. Definitely look at that sound file you dropped into the iDVD menu, make sure it is not a CBR MP3, and that your CMs and transitions follow the rules in the link I provided. Make sure you are using "save as disk image" and have 20GB for free space..........
And since you do have transitions & special effects(slow mo) and sound effects, you might try exporting your iMovie back to your camera or to full quality DV. This will render all the sound and effects, and then you can re-import to iMovie, add chapters, and use that movie in iDVD. This simplifies iDVD's and QT's job during encoding.
I am ready to drink heavily
Well just skip the heavily part, and this is a good activity to do while waiting on the beachball.......

  • Spinning beachball when applying adjustments

    Hi there,
I'm new Aperture user, moving away from iPhoto. I love the tools Aperture offers but I am getting the "spinning beachball" every time apply an adjustment and then brush in a mask. It specifically happens when I zoom-in, brush-in a mask and then use the sliders to make my adjustment. It takes the system 10-20 mins to come back to normal state (and sometimes it freezes and have to shut-it down by holding the power button).
This does not seems like a normal behavior to me. Anybody else experiencing the same issue? I am not running any plug-ins, my images are .jpgs (3872x2592). I am running Aperture on an iMac 2.4 GHz Core duo 2 w/ 4GB RAM.
    Cheers,
    -g

Aperture is a heavy pro graphics app that is very demanding of hardware. Your Mac is limiting to Aperture so we need to do what we can to optimize.
Some generic advice I posted in another thread:
    • Set Previews to only be built manually, and only tell Aperture to build Previews when you are not otherwise editing in Aperture.
    • Keep the internal drive underfilled for speed, which sooner or later usually requires using a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives. Back up originals before importing into Aperture or any other images app.
    • The Aperture Library should be on an internal drive.
    • Turn off Share Previews with iLife and iWork.
    • Remember that HDs slow as they fill and keep the internal drive underfilled. Approx. 70% full maximum is a good guideline.
    • If page outs increase significantly during operation try to run Aperture by itself. On my C2D MBP with its max of 3 GB RAM I always did a restart prior to a heavy Aperture session to clear any memory leaks and make sure no other apps were open. Browsers in particular will often suck RAM Aperture would otherwise be using.
IMO all Aperture users who can should routinely bump RAM to at least 8 GB.
    • Some users have observed that it can take a new Aperture installation time (weeks) to stabilize. So do not panic; and allow Aperture to continue background work by not fully shutting down the computer. Personally I never fully shut down Macs except during electrical storms.

  • 500gb Seagate Momentus installed, constant beachball/freezing!

i recently installed a 500gb seagate momentus 5400 rpm hd into my macbook aluminum. i installed OSX and the installs went smoothly. for some reason my macbook will constantly freeze now for no reason at all. i would randomly get the spinning beachball and programs will begin to crash one by one. i usually always have firefox and adium open so i'm not sure if its one of these programs causing it, or possibly a bad OS install.
is it possible it's my hard drive? once the beachball freezes all the programs, i can still slide the trackpad and see all programs opened i just can't do anything in any of them.
i've already repaired disk and disk permissions with install dvd. i've also tracked it with activity monitor and there is nothing abnormal. can anyone help with this? thanks.

I did return it. I decided it would take as much time to reinstall everything, since I had already wiped the hard drive to return to the store, and I was sooooo tired of troubleshooting after a month of problems. (I was also on my last day of their 30 day return policy.)
I swapped it out for a WD hard drive of the same size, reloaded everything yesterday, and have had no problems at all. Hope disabling the SMS continues to work for you!
@Mrfantastic, when I was researching this I saw a lot of people commenting on the 7200 having issues with it beeping and freezing--although it sounds like the freeze issue the 7200 has is different. Mine would FREEZE. Couldn't force quit, and it would freeze up all the other applications. My only option was to a hard reboot. This would happen 1-2 times an hour. The people with complaints about the 7200 are saying it beeps and then freezes for 10-30 seconds and then starts working again...

  • Moving Size Slider Results In Spinning Beachball On G3 iMac !

I have given my wife my old G3 600MHz iMac (256MB RAM).
Before doing so I erased it and intalled OSX 10.4.10 and QT 7.3.
When we opened iPhoto 5 everything seemed OK. We imported 108 photos from a 5 megapixel camera, scrolled through them etc. and played a slideshow.
Then we double-clicked a photo to select it and moved the size slider to enlarge it. Immediately the spinning beachball appeared and stayed there for ages before any enlargement occurred.
This only happened when altering the size of a selected picture - not when changing the sizes of the whole album display.
I installed iPhoto 4 which seemed to work OK.
Though the iMac is not tremendously powerful, I originally used it in OS 9.2 and Tiger to edit videos in iMovie and Premiere 6.5 with no problems. I also manipulated photos in Photoshop Elements 2 effortlessly.
So I don't think lack of power is the problem. It's as though there is some kind of conflict.
Any ideas why that one feature causes a freeze?
    Ian.
P.S. The Hard Drive has nothing on it apart from the OS and applications.

I double-click the thumbnail and it of course loads the picture full size.
Then when I try to move the slider to enlarge it further, the slider does not move and the beachball appears.
I also notice that the "Adjust" command invokes a window with only "Brightness" and "Contrast", just like iPhoto 4.
I have deleted and reinstalled everything etc. and it appears my G3 does not like iPhoto 05.
I think I will make do with version 4. After all it's only my wife who will be using it and to her that is over-the-top hi-tech stuff!
Luckily, for me, she cannot access these forums!
    Thanks for your help.
    Ian.

  • Spinning Beachball FIXED in iTunes 7.7.1

Congratulations Apple, iPod Touch spinning beachball issue when connecting to iTunes 7.7.1 has now been fixed, no more waiting 2-3mins for iTunes to recognise the Touch.

I had a problem with my iPod Video 60GB being updated when I updated to iTunes 7 and it got worse (had to wait a very long time for it to update my iPod if it ever did) when I updated to iTunes 7.0.1.8. Then I was advised that iTunes shouldn't have installed with the 'old iPod updaters' still installed, but it did. So I uninstalled the 'old iPod updaters' via 'Add and Remove Programs' in control panel. When I rebooted iTunes said the iPod software was missing and instructed me to re-install iTunes. After the re-install everything runs great. Presently, I only have iTunes 7.0.1.8, Apple Software Update on my computer and version 1.2 on my iPod.

  • Spinning beachball of death won't go away, iTunes always crashing

I've been having problems with my MacBook since updating to iTunes 8.2.1 a couple of weeks ago. After updating iTunes would hang on the spinning beachball and crash constantly- the application was totally unusable. I removed iTunes, reinstalled it and rebuilt my library. After that iTunes worked most of the time, but occasionally would get hung up on the beachball.
Over the past couple of days it's gotten much worse. I'm unable to have both iTunes and Firefox (or iTunes and any other application) open at the same time- I get the spinning beachball and have to force quit everything. It usually takes several minutes for the force quit command to actually work. Today I downloaded a show from the iTunes store and iTunes crashed halfway through. I was able to re-open iTunes and get the show downloaded, but when I tried to open iTunes again several hours later I got a message saying something about how there was a problem and that my iTunes library has been renamed as damaged.
I removed and reinstalled iTunes again and now iTunes won't open at all. I don't know how to move forward at this point. I ran disk utility to check the permissions and there were a number of problems, but no matter how many times I click repair permissions they reappear. (Permissions differ on "System/Library/Components/AudioCodecs.component/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .) It's the same permissions issue over and over. I don't know how to fix this.
Does anyone have suggestions on what steps I can take? Right now my computer is very frustrating to use because I'm not able to use more than one application at once, and I'm not sure if this is because of the problems I've been having with iTunes, or if it's something else altogether. Has anyone been able to successfully resolve their issues with iTunes?

  • Logic pro 9.1.8 won't load and I get spinning beachball of death

I have ML that is up to date and logic studio 9.1.8. When I try to run 9.1.8 (1700.67) (64-bit) I get to a splash screen that says "Searching for Audio Unit plug-ins (Apple:AUNetReceive).....and I have the spinning beachball of the death. I have to use force quit the app.
I have looked at a few threads and can't find my answer. Should I trash permissions or reload the app after I get rid of it using app cleaner?
OR is this a simple fix?
    Thanks in advance.
I haven't tried to open it on my MBP, but I assume I will get the same result.

Sorry to state the obvious (?) but you are not Updating/Upgrading.
You are DOWN grading if you are going from 9.1.8 to 9.0.2
If you want to downgrade, likely you will need to ERASE, and reinstall Logic.

  • My G4 keeps giving me a spinning beachball

I have a G4 tower running 10.4 something.  I can't get in to see which 10.4 because everytime I do anything the spinning beachball kicks in.  When it times out, the very next time I do anything it kicks in again.  I am attempting to install the OS again, but for some reason my external DVD drive isn't showing on the desktop.  I have tried ejecting the system disc several times and putting it back in again, but the computer won't recognize it.  I attempted to restart from the external drive, and a file with a ? on it was on the screen rather than the regular icon.
Is there any other way to get the system re-installed, or is there something else I can do to get rid of the spinning beachball?  I am using this computer as a back up to my laptop, and recently when my video card went bad on my laptop I discovered that my desktop G4 didn't work either.  I hated being without a computer for any length of time and I need to get the G4 up and running as a true backup.
FYI, I also have a smallish extra internal drive that does not have a system on it.  As I recall, I couldn't get them daisy-chained when I installed the extra internal drive.  I just use it as backup for my data.
Any ideas, besides dumping this computer and getting another (I have NO money)!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Carole

    >Apparently there are quite a few issues with this "slave" srive.  Could that be what is causing my apparently intermittant issues?
Indeed it can. Open Console in Applications>Utilities, any repeating errors?
    >Any ideas on how to get it to boot from (or restart from) the iPod?
Is this a USB or Firewire iPod? G4s cannot normally boot OSX from USB, only FW.
    >OOPS!!  I marked the wrong one "Correct Answer"!!
I like getting points here, (only about 1 in a 100 do so at times), but I hate undeserved points!
    >When I rebooted my G4 normally, it still didn't "see" the DVD external drive.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)

  • HT2506 I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any Preview updates in the works. I find there is a problem with Preview crashing, or taking a very long time to "catch up" (spinning beachball of death) while I'm editing.

I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any updates to this program in the works. It seems Apple is constantly updating its software, except for Preview. I find it crashes all too often, and also takes forever to "catch up" with me (as in spinning beachball of death) when I'm editing a lrge amount of photos. Yes, I know I should be using Photoshop or somesuch, but it's just too **** confusing, and I don't have the time to figure it out. Thanks!!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Since upgrade to 10.5.8, frequent temporary hangs (spinning beachball)

    Good day!
Since updating to 10.8.5 on my MacBook Pro (15" unibody design), I'm encountering frequent visits (every 5 to 10 minutes) by the spinning beachball which last for 30 seconds or so.
At first I thought something might be slurping up all the processor power, but Activity Monitor isn't showing anything. The one thing I haven't checked yet is whether it still happens if I'm not connected via AirPort. The incidents do not appear to be limited to apps using the Internet.
    Any great ideas? Thanks!

Been having the same issues happening on the same machine as you. I did this yesterday, and so far so good.
    1. Restart in safe mode (Hold down shift key when you hear the chime)
    2. Under Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities, select your hard drive on the left column, and click "Repair Permissions"
    3. Once done, restart
It's been a day since I've done this, and no beachballs yet (fingers crossed)
