Diagnosing connection problem
Please could you help. I am using TOAD to connect to a number of databases but for a particular database, it hangs and crashes TOAD.
1.How can I diagnose the problem? I can connect to the same database successfully using sqlplus.
2. If I want to set a trace on the connection, please could you give me step by step guide on how to do this.
Thank you.

1.How can I diagnose the problem? I can connect to the same database successfully using sqlplus. I am not sure that then this can be termed as a database issue. Since the connection is maintained to the same db, it would have failed from everywhere. I believe, it may be an issue with Toad. Are you not seeing any log file or so from Toad which could tell what had happened when it got crashed? Check for any files ni the user dump dest and core dump dest which may tell that what did happen wrong? Still I can't think anything which would be killing Toad. If it would be an issue with a database like some internal error, it would have killed connection from anywhere.
2. If I want to set a trace on the connection, please could you give me step by step guide on how to do this.Search over this forum and at here, http://tahiti.oracle.com for dbms_monitor package. That should get you started.

Itunes and IE - if IE doesnt work, itunes can't connect problem
IE8 stopped working.
Now, itunes does not connect to the internet, for downloading podcasts.
However, I can surf the internet using Firefox. So I have a connection to the internet that works.
How can I get itunes to connect to the internet?
Thanks for help! With IE I get this page:
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems"
I have AVG. Never had Norton. I brought the computer uninstalled.
My suspicion is that it's a virus (or other), because AVG wont update, nor will Malwarebytes.
I installed Malewarebytes last week and ran it. It found some items, see below:
I've run Crap Cleaner. I have run AVG.
Is there a way to get iTunes to connect to the internet via Firefox (which is now my default browser)? Be great if there's a solution to iTunes, without having to need to remove the virus first - it might be beyond my computer skills to remove a virus.
Thanks for your help.

Out of ideas diagnosing VPN connection problems
I'm having trouble narrowing down what's causing the VPN connection problems to my new Mini Server. Sometimes I can connect just fine with my MacBookPro and use all the resources like file sharing, etc. So, this leads me to believe it has been setup correctly. But then, for no reason at all (maybe it's later in the same day, or a completely different day) it will just stop working and I cannot connect at all.
*MacBook and iMac at home cannot connect, but iPhone can*
This is what's really throwing me off. This afternoon, I cannot connect to the server from home with my MacBook or my iMac. BUT, my iPhone can -using the same WiFi network my computers are on, not the cellular network. How could that be? The VPN settings on all 3 devices match exactly.
*Colleagues with other ISP's can connect, while I cannot*
I've called Comcast business (which provides the static IP for our office server) and they tell me all my settings are correct for allowing VPN traffic through. Likewise, Comcast Residential tells me there is nothing that would block VPN traffic from my home. They tell me to talk with Apple. argh!
*Web and Server Admin services are still accessible when VPN is not working*
We have exposed the Server's Web and Admin services without needing a VPN connection to access them. Since these services are accessible to me even when the VPN is not working, this leads me to believe the server is operating normally and capable of receiving incoming traffic.
I'm out of ideas and I'm starting to lose my mind!!! Any ideas on why my 2 computers sometimes can connect, yet sometimes cannot...all the while, my iPhone can connect just fine over the same network???I don't have an explanation for the erratic nature of your connections. It's only as I've said before, in my experiences with such problems it has always traced back to misconfigured network or DNS settings. mDNS is multicast DNS and it's a protocol Apple uses so its devices can find each other easily. That may be the reason why your iPhone can connect when other things can't.
To take a step back, here is how I think things should be set up:
\- Your dedicated IP address should be assigned to your router automatically through PPPoE
\- The name servers as set in your router should be your ISP's name servers
\- Make sure the server has only one connection to the router that is managing the dedicated IP, either wired or wireless, but not both
\- A static network address should be assigned to your server's MAC address in the router's DHCP settings
\- The server's network address should be put in the DMZ on the router or set as the default server in the NAT settings, depending on the router
\- The network settings in System Preferences on the server should be set to DHCP with manual address and the server's network address entered correctly
\- The router address should be listed correctly in the network settings in System Preferences on the server
\- The name servers in the network settings in System Preferences on the server should be 127.0.0.1 and the router's IP address, nothing else.
\- The zone files on the server should have a primary and reverse zone for each domain name and its network address. Do not use the dedicated IP address in the zone files on the server.
If everything is set as I described, it should work. If it doesn't, it's time to call a witch doctor or an exorcist. -
Local Network Connection Problem with SQL Server 2008 R2
Hi,
I have CRM application which uses SQL server 2008. Weird thing is that I have no problems connecting from client machines to the server when using a particular router (via LAN) and when I upgrade the firmware of the same router (A common open source firmware
which is used by many also works perfect apart from mentioned problem) and restart the server, the connection cannot be established. I get Error 40.
When i downgrade the firmware and restart the server, the connection works again.
Please note that I am absolutely not touching any configuration of the server. Also the CRM software allows remote connections from public IPs which this feature works fine with both downgraded and upgraded firmwares.
As for my understanding, the routers do not block ports in LAN connections. So how can I diagnose the reason for this connection problem?Hi Leony83,
Please also help to check Windows Event Log information regarding this issue, so that we can do further investigation. In additin, here is the general steps to troubleshoot SQL Server Error 40 issue. Please see:

If my network connection goes out briefly due to a problem at my ISP, FireFox immediately opens a "diagnose network problems" page. This is particularly annoying when I don't even have FireFox or any other software open. Ideally, I do NOT want FireFox to even check if my Network is connected. How can I stop this?

Interne connection problem with Macbook
I have a new 13 inch white macbook . It keeps on disconnecting with the internet . My PC laptops dont have this problem . I am using AT&T Gateway wireless modem . The macbook would show no connection and then after the diagnostics are run and the browser is closed and re-opened it connects with the internet, it is annoying . I am using safari and firefox both . The problem is more with online banks and online apparel stores not with yahoo or google.Seems the browsers are not compatible with these websites.
Please help.
ThanksYes, there are a few sites that are not 100% compatible with Safari OR Firefox, and work ONLY with Internet Explorer. Do the help files or instructions for your troublesome bank or merchant website(s) specify what browser(s) version(s) and operating systems they support?
Airport (wireless internet connection) problems to your network and/or wireless router are different, and 99.9% of the time, not related to browser compatibility issues.
Unpredictably connecting or disconnecting from a wireless router is a wireless networking problem, not a browser compatibility issue.
*Wireless troubleshooting:*
Can you also connect to your Mac directly to your AT&T wireless router with an Ethernet cable?
That will help you diagnose what are connectivity/network issues, versus what are browser compatibility issues. If your browser(s) work fine with the troublesome sites when directly connected by wire, then you're NOT having browser compatibility issues. Macs are picky about wireless connections. My original inexpensive 'b/g' wireless router worked fine with my older Windows XP computer and Nintendo Wii, but my MacBook kept dropping the signal every 10 minutes or so. I upgraded to a famous brand 'n' wireless router, and my problems disappeared.
*Browser Compatibility Troubleshooting*
Indications of browser incompatibility are:
Fonts that don't display correctly, such as overlapping or missing letters or words.
Wrong colors or colors that obscure some parts of the screen.
Text that displays line by line at the left margin, over colored backgrounds, instead of as a web page.
Screen display design elements are wrong, such as a color box that seems too large or small for the text displayed on it.
Some or all of the 'button' elements of the website do not respond to pointing the cursor and clicking, even after refreshing the screen, and the only solution is to closing the browser.
Look carefully at the Status Bar at the bottom of the browser so see if it displays an Errors count. (Then choose Window, Activity, to see what errors are occurring.)
If you MUST have 100% Internet Explorer compatibility on your Mac, you can always purchase Windows and IE and install it under Bootcamp, Parallels, VMWare Fusion or similar programs.

I have the Oracle 8i personal edition for win 98. I've installed the software and I'm able to use SQL *Plus. But when I try connecting to server manager to create a tablespace, I can't.
I'm logged in as Scott/Tiger.
I'm unable to connect as internal with the password manager.
I get an Error Msg: "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges"
Where am I going wrong? Is there any other way to connect to server manager?
Is there a different userid or pwd? The software is installed at home and there are no admins involved.
Also, can someone tell me where to find Oracle 8 for windows?Have you patched either the 8i or 10g installations? There is a bug (3437884) that makes the 10g software not able to connect to versions of 8i below 8.1.7.4 - the bug is fixed in the 10.1.0.3.0 patchset. So, if you patch the 8i installation to 8.1.7.4.x you can connect using the 10.1.0.2.0 software. Or you can patch the 10.1.0.2.0 software to 10.1.0.3.0 - however there is another bug (3870317) that prevents any additional components from being installed into a 10.1.0.3.0 home. So, if you patch to 10.1.0.3.0 make sure you have installed all the components you will need to into that home before patching. The workaround for this particular bug is a complete uninstall and re-install.
Sorry for the long-winded response, but hope that helps.

Please help with iChat Video connection problem
Hi,
I'm having problems getting iChat video to connect with other users. Is there anyone here who can interpret the log for me to diagnose the problem?
I'm using iChat 4.0.2 (604) on OSX 10.5.2. I'm able to make a test call to the appleu3test01 account but not to anyone else. My computer is behind a firewall/nat that allows all outgoing connections.
Thanks in advance,
Charley

Last week my BT Home hub was changed for a shiny new black Hub 2.0 and all went well until this morning. I was using my PC (wirelessly as I always do), restarted it and then discovered that that it can no longer 'see' the hub.
When clicking 'connect to a network' it shows BTFON and several other hubs, presumably belonging to my neighbours, but there's no mention of my hub within the list.
I've tried, restarting, resetting the hub, etc etc etc but none of this makes any difference.
What's really annoying is my old laptop will connect to the internet wirelessly perfectly via the hub.
I phoned BT help in India but because I was honest and told him the laptop works he immediately diagnosed the problem as being with my PC. I doubt this is the case but if it is as it can 'see' neighbours' hubs then whatever its problem it can't be that fatal ... or can it?
Any help/suggestions/advice would be very much appreciated.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Ask your neighbour whether they can see your hub. It will be in the format Bthomehub2-xxxx.
You could connect your PC to the Ethernet port and change the name of your wireless network by going into the hub manager.
Its also possible that your computer, if its an old one, cannot see networks that have WPA encryption on them.
The old hub was WEP (not very secure) encryption by default.
If you still have problems, try changing the wireless node on the hub, to exclude the new wireless "N". Set it to "B/G" only. See if that helps.
If you can see FON, then your hub wireless must be working.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

Huge speed drop and connection problem when answer...
About 2 days ago my internet speed dropped hugely and it's almost now unuseable. I've run a speed test and the results are below. Any idea on what to do to get this resolved?
Also, every time I answer a call or disconnect a call the broadband connection is los which is very annoying! Again, any ideas about thats causing that?
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download Speed
102 Kbps
0 Kbps
250 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 102 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2432 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 KbpsAndyMc what you have supplied is the wireless connection rate between the router and your wireless adapter this is not related to anything from Bt. This is the connection rate which I am sure would be related to a channel issue more than the connection dropping. Here is a link to the help site that will assist especially the link with regards changing the wireless channels. http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11381/c/346,1887,1889
Make the change and then disconnect and reconnect the wireless and notice if the connection rate changes. I am sure you will get some interesting results. A good little tool you can use is an utility called inSSIDer just do a google search and install that, it will show you where there may be a conflicting channel issue, the non shared channels are 1.6.and 11. If you need to diagnose the dropping connection problem then that is a different issue to the connection one. -
Broadband/internet and wireless connection problem...
Towards the end of 2101 I received an email informing me that BT would be upgrading my local line and I could expect a much improved service. Whether this 'upgrade' has been the cause of my problems or is merely coincidental I cannot say. Prior to my experience since this time I could count lost broadband in hours per year (I never had internet or wireless connection problems).
Since the end of 2010 I now regularly lose my broadband completely every six to eight weeks. 'Home Hub cannot connect to broadband.' There is a worsening loss of speed? over a period of two to four days at the end of which I need to phone BT three/four/five, etc. times until they manage to locate the problem and fix it. It is always some problem they find on the line or with their equipment.
I always mention that this is an ongoing problem. Never do they take any action to escalate the issue.
This week things have become considerably worse.
I have started to lose my internet connection now. 'Safari cannot connect to the internet'.
There are now two issues which arise concurrently.
I phoned BT, finally the operative in India (through a very poor BT wireless phone connection) changed the channel of my router for me. He mentioned something about changing the address and password. This seriously exacerbated the situation. My password is not recognised now when I am asked to reconnect by selecting a network.
The next occasion on which I lost my INTERNET connection and tried to reconnect I got the message 'Airport has the self-assigned IP address (...........) and is unable to connect to the internet.
I phoned BT to report this and was told that this indicated an adapter problem and the problem was now out of BT's hands. I Should contact Apple.
I did so. Apple said I should contact BT to change channels. I explained this had caused the problem and they were now refusing to assist me. Apple tried everything that they could think of to resolve the issue (despite not being required to do so). Eventually the only suggestion they could make as BT had refused to help was to reinstall my operating system. Extremely drastic. But I can now connect wirelessly again.
Service is still intermittent requiring constant restarts to regain connections.
BT's response to a formal complaint was more of the usual banal questions, the usual tests, the usual promises of 'something would be done'.
Their systems are not set up to make any sort of accurate diagnosis of customers' issues. They seem to have a set number of 'fixes' into which they try to fit all problems - one would assume simply to save costs - their cost saving exercises are now costing me money.
That's all for starters.
Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem, since BT "upgraded my broardband" my home hub looses internet connection at least twice a day and I have to power reset it. the broadband shows as connected but the internet connection is lost, if I try reconnecting it fails and only a power resetr will work. I have a temp solution by fitting a time switch to the mains adaptor and reseting it at 0200 each day. but before the upgrade the home hub had worked for years and no problems. i have also replaced the origonal home hub 1 with a home hub 2 to see if that improves the situation.
welcome to the forum
This subject has been marked as solved by the originator and you will get more response if you start your own subject rather than continue here.
if you start your own subject just cut and paste your post and then in order to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results .
are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Do you have any phone extension sockets in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

Possible design flaw in Nike+iPod kit causes connection problem
I've been having some similar receiver/sensor connection problems as documented on these forums. Here's a page and video that diagnoses the problem as being a possible contact connection issue. Try squeezing your Nano to see if it makes contact. I'll try mine when I get home.
http://www.sneakmove.com/2007/01/nikeipod-sport-kit-connection-problem.html
12" powerbook g4 1.33 Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1.25ghz ramI think you meant you have the iPod nano software, version 1.2. iTunes 1.2 will definitely not work. 6.0.5 is the current version of iTunes The iPod options appear after plugging in your iPod, then choosing preferences in iTunes (or clicking the little iPod icon in the bottom right of the iTunes window). Nike + iPod prefs are in there too.

Timeouts and connection problems after 5.1(2) upgrade
AIM/chat and some other programs are having timeout/connection problems after upgrade to 5.1(2). I am using S241 also. The connection problems stopped when the IPS was set to bypass. Rebuilt IPS and left sigs at default settings and problem is still happening. I am not seeing any of the IPs that are having the problem in the Event Viewer or on the Events in the IDM.
Any known issues with the 5.1(2) that would cause this type of problem?I don't know specifically, but I did notice that 5.1(3) was released today.

Hi, i am having trouble with my mac mail account, i cannot send or receive any emails because of the server connection problems. Message says it could not be connected to SMTP server. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hello Sue,
I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!
