Diagnosing strange behaviour: Long pauses for dialogue boxes/slips

I've been enduring this odd situation for some weeks now and it's getting quite annoying: when slips and dialogue boxes appear in all applications there is a long pause and the beach ball cursor appears. The pause can last between 5 and 15 seconds wherein the application is unresponsive. Strangely this only seems to happen the first time the slip appears: successive appearances present little or no delay and can be dismissed as soon as they appear.
I have tried all the usual incantations and maintenance routines with no improvement. In my mind this behaviour commenced with the latest Software Update (10.4.6) but this may be coincidence.
I'd be surprised if anyone has a ready solution for this problem so what I'd like instead is some suggestions on how to go about diagnosing such things. I've tried using Activity Manager but there are many processes that mean nothing to me. I wouldn't know if they were malignant if they reared up and bit me. Perhaps the Console and various log files may be useful but I don't know what to look for.
I'd appreciate any suggestions, remedies or pointers to sources of further information.
Thanks.

Hi, Andrew.
Two further suggestions:
1. Do you have a second user account defined on your system? If so, log in to it and see if the problem happens there. If it does, it is probably a system-wide problem. If not, it is something with your user account. If you don't have a second account on your system, you can create a new one using System Preferences > Accounts.
2. See if a third-party Startup or Login Item may be causing the issue. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
Good luck!

  • Long pause for render to commence when render button is clicked in After Effects

I am using after effects on a mac. When I go to render my composition and click on the render button it can take up to 10mins for after effects to actually commence rendering. I have purged all the disk memory and cache which doesn't have any effect. It has only fairly recently started to do this. I'm not sure if there is a setting that has turned on in the preferences or what?
I called up customer support on Friday 13th and was told i would be getting a call back the same day after being on hold for over 30 minutes. I never got a call back or response!
Can anyone shed some light on this?
    Thanks

No effects used on the composition. System info, system preferences MP info and render settings can be seen below.

  • No longer get a dialogue box when saving a bookmark

That is it. Cannot save a bookmark.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Long pauses in podcasts feature

I have itunes 11.1.4. I download a lot of podcasts. Now when I try to go to podcasts, and refresh, or click on any podcast or its info, and sync to my ipod or iphone, there is a long pause for each of these steps, about 1-2 minutes each (spinning pinwheel). I had no problem for years. What's different?

Some options you might find useful are
    -Xloggc:gc.log -XX:+PrintGCApplicationConcurrentTime -XX:+PrintGCApplicationStoppedTime
This will show you when the application actually stops the world. Note: there are other reasons an application can stop and it shows you them all not just GCs.

Unfortunately she has been misdirecting folks with that update bug link for far too long.
Candidly, when you see the Apple ID for a stranger appear in the Mac App Store (MAS) on your Mac regarding an update for an app that you haven't bought, it is a notice that you have a pirated app that you got from an outside source. Some trial version or a "free" version is actually a MAS version that someone has cracked and is distributing.
    Finding a pirated app
All MAS apps have a MAS receipt in their app bundle. Check any app acquired from the MAS. Right click on the app's icon in your Apps folder and choose Show package contents. In the Contents folder is a _MASReceipt folder and in that folder is the coded MAS receipt. It has the Apple ID of the MAS account that bought/acquired the app from the MAS. It is that receipt that the MAS uses to alert you that an app has an update. There would not be a notice of an update with someone else's Apple ID showing in the MAS on your Mac, if there was not an app with a receipt from this person's account somewhere on your Mac.
    Download the free app FindAnyFile (FAF);
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
This app is easier to use and seems to be more powerful than Spotlight. Open FAF and in the box type _MASReceipt and press Find. It should come up with a list of every app on the Mac with a MAS receipt. Compare the apps with receipts in FAF's list with your purchased apps list in the Mac App Store. The odd app out should be the pirated app.

  • Strange boxes instead of type in dialogue boxes...

I don't know what changed, but recently, when OS X asks me for my admin password, I get a regular dialogue box, but all the type is in some strange font. Instead of letters, everything is the same black outlined box with an "A" in it. It looks like the same problem I have with Chrome but I can't seem to find what's wrong. More than likely it's a font problem, but how do I fix it?

That didn't seem to do it after all and now there's another creep of this font problem acting up (I have an image from my dropbox):
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/421186/mailapp.png
The thing is that I haven't overwritten any system fonts, and I don't think that anything is conflicting, but I don't know how to tell.
I've purged all the font caches, reimported my fonts, done the safe boot -reboot, and even did applejack, but it just doesn't seem to go away.
Now that I think about it, this has happened in the past a few times, and I almost always wipe and reinstall the OS.
I just wish there was something that could take a look and tell me where there are problems like Norton used to so that I'm not using my billable hours trying to fix this.

  • Strange issue when pausing LONG audiobook--pressing play again changes the

Strange issue when pausing LONG audiobook--pressing play again changes the position within the book--it doesn't start back exactly where it left off.
The audiobook of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" is between 18 and 19 HOURS long--all as one long track/file.
I've noticed that when I pause while listening and then press play again, it "rewinds" and starts playing portions of the audiobook from about 10 minutes prior--but the time stamp doesn't change. At least this is the time frame from the first "test". Other pauses/plays may result in different time differences.
The first time this happened, I didn't realize what it was doing. I pressed play (from the pause) and I heard a portion that I had already played. I thought that the bookmark just didn't "remember" as it should have, so I scrubbed forward trying to find where I remembered leaving off. If you end up pausing/playing even a couple of times with this happening each time, the portion of the audiobook that you're playing and the time stamp becomes COMPLETELY off! For example, almost an hour into the time stamp was really only about 10-15 minutes into the actual book.
I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but hopefully it does to someone. It's very frustrating to have this happen simply because you had to pause while listening. You have to scrub backwards or forwards each time to find out where you REALLY left off at and the time stamp becomes of no help value since it doesn't change as the playback position moves itself.
I'm sure that this is something happening due to the extreme length of the audio file. That maybe it can't track as precisely as it could with shorter lengths. ???
Any ideas? Has anyone else seen this happen? Any ideas on whether or not there is anything that can be done to prevent this?

I'm glad that I'm not the only one having this
problem. It's ironic that we're both having issues
with the SAME audiobook. I haven't had a chance to
listen to Books 1-5 much to see if they have the same
issue or not--I don't remember any on the few parts
that I've played for my nephews.
Yeah, I know! I was shocked to see that. I recently finished HP5 (twice), and NEVER had this issue, but it is a much smaller file size.
I'm thinking that I may try to convert to AAC before
I try the splitting program--in theory, it's easier
to start right back in again when you only have 1
track to find, than when you have dozens/hundreds of
smaller tracks. It's sometimes hard to remember
which track you left off with--even if it's
    "bookmarked" within that track.
I dunno anything about AAC, to be honest. Never used it. My plan is to split the MP3 into smaller MP3s by chapter and load them on a playlist. Of course, I will have to label them all nice and pretty. It is a long book, but you could always just load a couple of chapter files at a time. The only thing that I can see that would be kind of a pain about splitting it with the Cool MP3 is searching thru the file for each chapter and setting break points.
My only concern is how much quality I'm losing by
    converting from one compressed format--MP3--to
    another compressed format AAC.
Yeah. Ew. No clue. Sounds unpleasant to me. Again, I really do not do anything with AAC.
    I suppose, since it's
spoken word instead of music, the change shouldn't be
too noticable. I'm not sure what kind of time frame
it'll require to convert. I'll probably try it with
    book 1 first--since it's the smallest.
May depend on the program. The one I got boasts no quality loss. You may wanna scrounge around the download sites and see which one sounds like it has the best features, even if you do just get a free trial version of something. I would definitely read the editor's ratings. I tend to trust that more than the typical end user's. They show how many stars the editor gives a product, and you can click that for the review, or sometimes they have labeled tabs where you can access the review.
As for how long it takes me to rip that particular file and if that actually fixes the scrubbing problem, I will have to let you know tomorrow. WAAAAY past my bedtime!
Keep me updated on your end. I sure which that there
was an explanation for why it happens.
Will do! I am thinking you hit the nail on the head with the length. That was exactly what popped into my mind when I figured out what the goofy thing was doing.
    Talk to you later!

  • Minor collection pauses for longer time (40 seconds to 3 minutes) - web app

We are facing a strange issue with our Application, it is running under jboss-4.0.2 with jdk1.5.0_07
It becomes unresponsive after 1/2 an hour load test and comes back to normal within 2 to 3 minutes. The following is a sample of the GC information when it says it takes around 48 seconds in minor collection. It also says JVM Process has not received any CPU time for 49 seconds. Extending timeouts. We have jvm settings like -Xms256m -Xmx2g .All other are default settings.
Is it due to lesser default young generation space (is it 64m max?) ?

I missed 1 thing , in the gc trace
    jvm 1 | [GC [DefNew: 22386K->1496K(23872K), 0.0121308 secs] 229932K->209042K(

it says 48.7297245 secs for collection of total heap, does it mean major collection was also run here?
If not then what can cause such a long pause during minor collection?
    Another point is
    Times: user=0.02 sys=0.00, real=48.73 secs
here user and sys time are very negligible while real time is so huge..what does this mean?

  • NO PRINTER PREFERENCES DIALOGUE BOX IN CS3 FOR EPSON R2880

I am running CS3 on a mac OS X and have just bought an Epson printer R2880. I cannot get any dialogue box up that will give me any printer options other than the basic print size, orientation and position on the paper. My only solution so far is to Copy & Paste into Pages where I can access a few more options & get reasonable prints. Has anyone found a way round this ?

    Sorry, Ill expand.
Its Mac OS/X Leopard. Running Adobe CS3. When I try and print a photo from Adobe CS3, I go to file print which displays a dialogue box (Titled Print). This dialogue box displays many print options e.g. size and orientation , position on the page etc but not a facility i.e dialogue box to select the paper type as an example e.g photo glossy , photo matt etc. These options are available from many of the other programs such as Pages and Easy Print and various other applications. Indeed I can take a photo from CS3 , convert to tiff as an example and print using these options from Easy Print. I would however like to access the full printer settings from CS3. I think this issue has been seen before in the professional range of printers.
I have spoken to Epson who say their printer and driver is fine as all the facilities work from other apps.
Adobe support said CS3 didnt support the preferences but to try a forum to see how people get round it. Hence here I am!
It is very strange that a photo application as advanced as CS3 wont let me choose a paper type for a semi professional printer like the Epson R2880.

  • Strange behaviour with combo boxes.

Has anyone else noticed strange behaviour of combo boxes with applets?
What happens is that on selecting the combo drop down, the dialogue the combo is sitting on moves behind its parent window. You just end up seeing the combo list, and no dialogue. Select a combo item, and sometimes the dialogue reappears, and sometimes it is still hidden.
I've only seen this whilst running an applet in browsers. In Eclipse I don't see the behaviour.
The behaviour is also very intermittent.
I'm using Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10-rc2, Using JRE version 1.6.0_10-rc2 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM, on Windows Vista, Google Chrome browser.
I'd raise it as a bug, it certainly seems quite serious, but I don't have a reliable test case.
I have a work around, on all my dialogues with combo's on them, I have setAlwaysOnTop(true). Not really the correct behaviour though.

  • Import Pictures dialogue box no longer appears on computer screen

When I connect my Canon camera to my computer via a USB cable, the computer makes a sound and then a dialogue box has always appeared on screen that says "Import Pictures and Videos" but today although there is still a sound the diaglogue box no longer appears.  I can access it by going through several steps - clicking on my computer, the device, open, etc. but that is much less convenient.
I checked that autoplay is functioning and the import settigns have not been changed.  How can I get this feature back again?

    Hi,
You may need to check the software which came with your camera and re-install it.

  • How to disable dialogue box asking for exchange user/psswd

Everytime a particular user sends me an email, just by clicking on that email or opening it, I get this annoying pop up dialogue box asking for name and password.
It looks like an exchange server thats connected to the users account and has nothing to do with my email account. I don't use exchange.
I have to hit cancel 3X and then it automatically prompts me every few seconds.

    Solved.
It was because the folder was from time machine backup that I just dragged and dropped to desktop.

  • When closing multiple tabs, is there any way to get back the option of saving those tabs OR NOT for your next session, within the warning dialogue box itself?

For brief period of time, not in FF4, there was the option whereby when I closed multiple tabs, a firefox dialogue box opened warning me that I'm about to close multiple tabs, '''AND ALSO''' asking me if wanted to save those tabs for my next session, or trash them.
The primary issue IS NOT about saving tabs. The primary question here is about getting THE OPTION back to the CLOSING MULTIPLE TABS WARNING DIALOGUE.
The use case here should be obvious. However, since it is clearly not obvious that different people work in a variety of ways, and neither of those methods of working is "wrong" or "right" I will elaborate: Some people, for whatever reason, it doesn't matter why, want to save all their tabs on some occasions, and on other occasions don't.
This preference varies throughout the day. Therefore it is inefficient to constantly go to preferences and change whether or not I want firefox to open all my tabs from my last session. It is more LOGICAL to place an option in the multiple tab warning dialogue as well, for people whose preference constantly changes.
This option was available for a time in most of the Firefox 3 versions. Is there any way to get back this option in Firefox 4?

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no need for asking if you want to save the current session.
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
You can set the warn prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page to <b>true</b> via the right-click context menu or toggle the value with a double left-click.

I got this iPad as an open box deal on bestbuy, it says the device is no longer eligible for creating a free iCloud account. How do I fix this?

You cannot fix it. Nobody can. There is a limit to how many free iCloud accounts that can be created on one iOS device and the limit is three. Obviously, this device reached that limit which means that this open box iPad was most likely owned by someone else or customers that used theiPad in the store got cute and created iCloud accounts on it and then deleted them.
So that's why deggie is recommending that you return the iPad to Best Buy and get your money back. You bought a device that should have never been sold to you.
