Diagnostic mode--battery or board?

I have a first generation Nano with a short battery life. Is there a way of using the diagnostic mode to determine if it is due to a battery gone bad or if it is due to a hardware problem? What do the results mean in the power test??
The Nano seems to indicate full charge fairly quickly (whether by wall charger, usb-computer, speaker base), but only provides 2 hours of play time.
Thank you in advance!

I went ahead and replaced the battery--all is well now, the Nano plays at least as long as when it was first purchased!

  • Using diagnostic mode on 27 inch iMac

I was trying to get my 27 inch core i7 iMac to boot into diagnostic mode this morning by holding down the 'D' key during bootup. It just wouldn't work and kept booting up normally. Then it occurred to me that maybe this is due to the fact that this iMac comes with a bluetooth keyboard. I happened to have a usb apple keyboard around so I plugged that in, rebooted while holding down the 'D' key and voila, it worked.
Am posting this in case anyone else is trying to go into diagnostic mode and can't figure out why it isn't working.

    Hey Frank
Great tip, thanks for the heads-up! I've seen that quite a few times when folks are troubleshooting with key commands using a wireless board.
I'm not sure how many folks look, but there is a "User Tips Library" where L2's and up can post tips.

  • Question about iPod 4th Gen Diagnostic Mode

I am having a problem with my iPod. 4th Generation, 40GB Model A1059.
I am interested in what should be the expected results in two of the Diagnostic modes.
    HDD R/W; and
    HDD SCAN
In the Scan test mode, I get a "Pass" message and when I press "play" I go back to the diagnostic mode menu. So I guess this means I passed the HD Scan.
In the R/W test mode, I get a message that reads
    HDD Test
    38 GB
But pressing 'play' nothing happens, and it seems (feels and sounds)like the hard drive is still spinning.
So is the test still underway, or am I finished with the test when I see the "38 GB" message on the display?
I did a search of this site and the internet and really can't figure out what the anticipated result should be. It just won't let me search under "HDD R/W" It seems that the / is some kind of boolean conector that the search engine reads as something other than a ASCII character.
For anyone who may be interested in my problem, here it is:
It used to run forever with the Apple Logo. I put it away and came back to it recently hoping the problem would have magically gone away. Well it hasn't. Now the HDD just 'clicks' It goes something like 1,2,3,"click"... 1,2,3"click" until the file folder with an exclamation pint comes up.
Interestingly enough, the 1,2,3,"click"... 1,2,3"click" happens in the HD Scan Mode Test, but when I run the HDD R/W mode test the drive seems to spin freely without the 'click'

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Diagnostic mode for ipod

ok, i was walking home from school, i took my ipod out of my pocket(30 G ipod video) it was starting up with the apple logo so i started pushing random buttons really fast. thet this diagnostic mode pops up, not user friendly type bunt stuff like battery test, memory test ect ect... i click battery test, it then says after a few seconds it says something like:
    ECG: OK
    TNG: OK
    SQB: OK
stuff like that then it says "reset to continue" i do that, and it all goes away.
oh also, the text was old plain text, no blue bars, almost no color, the text looked like the old mac text.
what happened, i think it was a diagnostic mode, so how'd it happen?

The diagnostic mode is not intended for the user - it's for Apple technicians use.
To get there, hold the MENU and SELECT buttons to reset the iPod. Then, when the Apple logo is displayed, hold the |<< and SELECT.
To exit diagnostics, hold the MENU and SELECT to reset again.
    Cheers!

  • Diagnostic Mode - iPod Hung - Assistance Needed

I was trying to put my iSkin back on and, based on what I learned by searching this forum, I must have hit the key sequence needed to get into Diagnostic Mode.
Well, now I can't get out. I was clicking around trying to find an exit and I must have started some type of test. The reason that I say this is because on the screen I see TESTING, with a solid black bar at the bottom of the screen that spans the whole screen. I think I may have entered RAM TEST (if that is even an option).
Now all it says is TESTING and I cannot reset the iPod at all. When I plug it into a Mac via Firewire, it is not found at all.
I don't care if I have to do a restore or a reset, but I cannot get it out of this mode at all. It has been like this for about an hour or so already.
Should I just wait for the battery to die? Any other suggestions?
    It is a monochrome 4G 20GB.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, the test must have finished or I was not re-setting it correctly.
I literally tried to reset the thing 30 times, and it finally worked and all is back to normal. The issue may have been the Hold switch. When I toggled it on and off, then tried to reset, it seemed to take.

  • IPod boots into diagnostic mode

    Hello,
I have a 5th gen iPod, 60 GB. Recently, when I wake my iPod from sleep, it boots right into the diagnostic mode. I keep resetting it, and it keeps booting into diagnostic mode. I've run the auto test and a bunch of the manual tests, and nothing looks like it failed, but I really can't tell.
Eventually, after resetting it enough times, it will boot correctly and will be useable. But then the next day, it will start booting into diag mode again.
I have tried plugging it into my iMac and that does nothing. It's not recognized when it's in diagnostic mode. I've also tried plugging it into the wall, and that didn't help. The battery is relatively full (when I get to the regular menus, the battery meter looks 90% full or more).
So is this one going the way of the dodo? Or is there something I can do? I would like this one to last until mid-year, because I think I will be getting an iPhone then. I plan to do a restore next time it boots into the regular screen.
    Thanks!

Well, I was able to get it to boot again. For some reason, whenever I plug it into the power adaptor in my car, it comes back to life.

Restoring it did not help, cause it's still happening.
Also, it seems that this booting-into-diagnostic-mode problem is caused when the iPod goes to sleep (i.e., when you wake it up and the first thing you see is the Apple logo). If I turn it off and turn it back on again relatively soon, it goes right into the main menu. But if I don't touch it for 24 hours or so and then I turn it on, I see the Apple logo, hear a beep and a click, and it boots into diagnostic mode.
Anybody have any ideas? It's out of warranty so worst case scenario is I keep resurrecting it using my car until I get my iPhone.

  • How to get into iPod Diagnostic Mode

I followed someones advice to get into Diagnostic Mode...duplicated below.
Problem is after rebooting iPod and the apple logo appears the button combination didn't work to get into Diag Mode for my iPod. Anyone know the combination for a 15GB docking (touch wheel) iPod????
    Instructions provided on forum:
1)Maybe you have damaged hard drive, you can check that by running a HDD Scan.
2)To do that you need to get into diagnostic mode.
    §First reset the iPod
    §How to reset iPod:
1.Connect iPod to the iPod Power Adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet.
2.Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)About 4 times, when you are finished make sure it is not on hold.
3.Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons (select is the middle button) until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this tep. There are two small pins within the iPod that need to make a connection to reset the iPod the pressure has to be just right. Sometimes it is easier to do this if you put the iPod on a flat surface.
§Then as soon as you see the apple come up on the screen, change to pressing select and the previous arrows (the arrows that are pointing to the left).
§The screen will change it will say IRAM PASS, DIAG VER.
    §PRESS PLAY TO CONTINUE.
§Press play to continue and then using the advance arrows, (arrows that point to the right), scroll down to the HDD SCAN and press select.
§It should take anywhere from 45 mins to around 2 hours for the scan to run.
§The scan will tell you exactly if your hard drive is damaged. This also can have effect on your battery life.

Actually, there's nothing you can do in Diagnostic Mode to create a problem, you can only check for them
Nope. HARD R/W will do a test of both writing and reading of the hard drive. This test is destructive, your data will be lost. There's also the CLEAR BLKS test and the HDD DROP test.
Not to mention that the scanning processes exercise the hard drive quite a bit, and frankly the iPod drive isn't made to stand that kind of abuse for very long.
In any case, there's realistically nothing you can test in diag mode that you can't test in other ways. A simple format will check the drive for sector errors (along with erasing it). There's very little point to using the diag mode.

  • My ipod classic is stuck in diagnostic mode and will not reset. Please help.

I turned on my iPod classic & it started in Diagnostic mode.  I worked my way through the various tests and press this/press that instructions and now it is stuck.
I can't turn it off or reset it.
I am unable to connect it to my PC at the moment and need help so that I can use it.
    I miss my music.

How did you try and reset the iPod?  By pressing and holding both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons togehter long enough for the Apple logo to appear?
What happens if you connect it to iTunes?
If nothing else, let the battery fully drain and then charge it up.

  • MAC MINI boots in diagnostic mode

    Hello.
I have had some problems with my Mac Mini in recent months, and two trips to the Apple Genius Bar has hopefully, finally corrected the issue with the mother board. After the most recent trip, now that I have the PC home, it always boots and shuts down in (what looks to be) diagnostic mode.  White screen, then black screen with scrolling status checks, then white screen then it comes up.  Power down goes black screen with scrolling status of terminating functions then off.
This is annoying.  I looked at the logs via the console and do not see anything being flagged, so I suspect that some (inept) technician just left the system in debug mode on boot up.  If I wanted to see this stuff every time I power on the system, I'd run Windows.
Is there a way to turn this power on / power off 'display of diagnostics' function 'off'?
I really do not relish the idea of unplugging everything yet again and going back over to the Apple Store if a couple of key strokes would do it from here.
I did run the SDD "Check permissions" and "Repair Permissions" on the drive that another blogger had recommended, with no effect.

    Please Plug FW
    lcd id : 2

what does that mean? what do i do? plz help.

Firewire is still faster than USB2. I have an external hard drive that has both types. I have tried tansferring the same set of files to and from the drive using both connections and timing the transfers. Firewire was faster. This is Firewire400 not the newer Firewire800 that is definately faster than USB2.

    Hi sayla,
When you reloaded your software did you do a clean reload (deleting all data)? http://bbry.lv/bpv7DT
If so, you might try doing a resettofactory using the following instructions. http://bit.ly/fMW9I4 This will reset to factory default.

  • Diagnostic Mode: How can you tell if the scan disk is working?

I put my ipod into diagnostic mode and went to the scan hard drive utility. The problem is that does not seem to be working.
    I get the following message:
    Read Verify Scan
    Scan takes a while
    Before Scan:
    Start Scan…
Does that mean the scan is in process or do I have to do something to start it?

Mine is doing exactly the same thing. Did you ever get the answer to your question?

  • HDScan not showing up in diagnostic mode

I have a 160G Video iPod,since I cant sync more then 4gbs on it I'ev benn talled that I may having a bad sector on my ipod,so I ran it on diagnostic mode but I cant find HDscan under 'IO' section or any other section on the diagnostic mode menu.
    Thanks you for your help.

Ok, that doesn't sound too good for what should be a pretty new machine judging by the PowerOn Hours...
    Next step...
    *Check iPod hard-drive for errors*
Hold Select+Menu on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Select+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu check *Disable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods*. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process.
This scan will take some time, or it may even lock up, but if it works it should be performing a write & read back check on every sector of the disc and thus should detect & remap the remaining bad sectors. Whether it completes or not comparing the before & after results should prove informative.

  • Unable to start diagnostic mode

I have a mid-2012 macbook pro. It will not startup. during startup the status bar on the bottom of the screen starts and stalls after approx 5% of the way. I tried to startup in the diagnostic mode by holding down the D key during startup but I still get the Apple logo and the status bar displays and goes til 5%. When I first had the problem with the startup I tried to reinstall the OS but it failed with the message that the hard drive cannot be changed.
any other way to get the diagnostic mode or test the hard drive from another system?
    much thanks
    john

    actually it is a mid-2010.

  • Differential mode and CB68LP board

    Hi:
I have a question on differential mode on CB68LP board. Attached is a diagram of op am with a differential stage circuit digram. I got from the link here.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/D59654FA44D2F9FA86256F4A006064F3?opendocument#4
As you see. The gound of Vs looks the same as RL ground. As I see the ground of RL. It is a AIGND. Am I see the way correct? If not, please verify me?
    That is the first thing.
The second thing is I have a test fixtuer. The attached block digram at the bottom which show current meter is the output to put a resistor across AI+ and AI- in CB68LP board to measure voltage.
You also see the test fixture ground after the current meter. I use the DMM to test the AIGND and the test fixture ground. They are not connected. But how come the first diagram, Vs ground looks like the same ground as RL. Could you explain to me? I don't understand here. Also, I would like to ask if the current go through AI+ to AI- and then from AI- to back to the ground of the test fixture.
Could you please verify me here.
At last,if I have a case where AI- is at the AIGND (the same wire), I don't have to put bias resistor. why do I not afraid of removing common voltage and common noise? Could you pls explain?
Many thank if you can replay to me promply. I am in an urgent.

    John
