Diagnostic mode

Apple let me down - I sent in an iPod for repair and got a new one back .. but it has had difficulty restoring, formatting to mac or PC - I spent over an hour on the phone with Apple. I ended up getting lost in a transfer, shortly after the tech said I should file a new repair claim (and pay the shipping again) for a repaired iPod I received yesterday.
I can do a restore, etc and pass disk utility checks, etc (including Mac and Norton) but a get disk write failures after about 4 songs. I finally ran it through Norton Disk Doctor - took 3 hours to get to sector 300,273 so I think my problem is a corrupt media.
One of the blogs on the Internet suggested that there was a way to get to a secret "diagnostic mode." There is. On a click wheel, reset and then start up holding the select (middle) and back (center-left) buttons. The screen says "IRAMPASS" and has lots of choices including "HDD Scan" which I started about 30 minutes ago. This "Feature" isn't documented so I'm reluctant to do too much with it, but I can't describe how let down I feel that Apple would send me a damaged iPod and suggest (after I had spent hours on it myself and an hour with them) that I should pay to have it repaired again.
Does anyone know about these diagnostics? If the media has a few bad sectors, will I be able to correct it on my own so I don't have to bother poor Apple with such a trivial problem as the sent me a bad iPod and don't appear to have a way to correct that.

Scott, Welcome to the discussion area!
Do you realize that there is an iPod nano discussion area?

fwrpwr : 0
what does that mean? what do i do? plz help.

Firewire is still faster than USB2. I have an external hard drive that has both types. I have tried tansferring the same set of files to and from the drive using both connections and timing the transfers. Firewire was faster. This is Firewire400 not the newer Firewire800 that is definately faster than USB2.

Hi sayla,
When you reloaded your software did you do a clean reload (deleting all data)? http://bbry.lv/bpv7DT
If so, you might try doing a resettofactory using the following instructions. http://bit.ly/fMW9I4 This will reset to factory default.

• Diagnostic Mode: How can you tell if the scan disk is working?

I put my ipod into diagnostic mode and went to the scan hard drive utility. The problem is that does not seem to be working.
I get the following message:
Read Verify Scan
Scan takes a while
Before Scan:
Start Scan…
Does that mean the scan is in process or do I have to do something to start it?

Mine is doing exactly the same thing. Did you ever get the answer to your question?

• HDScan not showing up in diagnostic mode

I have a 160G Video iPod,since I cant sync more then 4gbs on it I'ev benn talled that I may having a bad sector on my ipod,so I ran it on diagnostic mode but I cant find HDscan under 'IO' section or any other section on the diagnostic mode menu.
Thanks you for your help.

Ok, that doesn't sound too good for what should be a pretty new machine judging by the PowerOn Hours...
Next step...
*Check iPod hard-drive for errors*
Hold Select+Menu on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Select+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu check *Disable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods*. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process.
This scan will take some time, or it may even lock up, but if it works it should be performing a write & read back check on every sector of the disc and thus should detect & remap the remaining bad sectors. Whether it completes or not comparing the before & after results should prove informative.

• Using diagnostic mode on 27 inch iMac

I was trying to get my 27 inch core i7 iMac to boot into diagnostic mode this morning by holding down the 'D' key during bootup. It just wouldn't work and kept booting up normally. Then it occurred to me that maybe this is due to the fact that this iMac comes with a bluetooth keyboard. I happened to have a usb apple keyboard around so I plugged that in, rebooted while holding down the 'D' key and voila, it worked.
Am posting this in case anyone else is trying to go into diagnostic mode and can't figure out why it isn't working.

Hey Frank
Great tip, thanks for the heads-up! I've seen that quite a few times when folks are troubleshooting with key commands using a wireless board.
I'm not sure how many folks look, but there is a "User Tips Library" where L2's and up can post tips.

• Unable to start diagnostic mode

I have a mid-2012 macbook pro. It will not startup. during startup the status bar on the bottom of the screen starts and stalls after approx 5% of the way. I tried to startup in the diagnostic mode by holding down the D key during startup but I still get the Apple logo and the status bar displays and goes til 5%. When I first had the problem with the startup I tried to reinstall the OS but it failed with the message that the hard drive cannot be changed.
any other way to get the diagnostic mode or test the hard drive from another system?
much thanks
john

actually it is a mid-2010.

• Diagnostic mode--battery or board?

I have a first generation Nano with a short battery life. Is there a way of using the diagnostic mode to determine if it is due to a battery gone bad or if it is due to a hardware problem? What do the results mean in the power test??
The Nano seems to indicate full charge fairly quickly (whether by wall charger, usb-computer, speaker base), but only provides 2 hours of play time.
Thank you in advance!

I went ahead and replaced the battery--all is well now, the Nano plays at least as long as when it was first purchased!

• My macbook pro decided to give a different res and a horizontal line follows my cursor (like a diagnostic mode or something) i have shutdown/restrted. Fixed the res but the cursor problem still exists any help please.

I was using my mac as normal and then my resultion on mr screen changed which i have fixed using the normal methods but i still continue on getting a horizontal line whereever my cursor is even after i have restarted and shut down. The line is a white colour but my other screens seem dulled wherever this line is not following it is not a solid white. It looks like its in a diagnostic mode or somthing. Any help would be appriciated, thanks.

It is possible there is a problem with the computer's graphics, but try a simple fix. viz. reset the NVRAM / PRAM.
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

• N97 Mini running in debug/diagnostic mode?!

Ever since i upgraded my firmware to the v12 version, my phone flashes up debugging messages in the top right of the screen in contrast inverted text.
The messages are displayed in sequence as various action occur but do disappear when an app has opened and is ready to be used.
The nokia maps app is a typical example: i've got 3.04 installed and when i start it up i see the following messages in sequence.....
STARTUP COMPLETED
LINK LAYER OPEN
TRAFFIC REQUEST
i then see other messages depending on what options i choose.
Also when editing a normal text message, if i press the orange arrow key to select one of the orange symbols i see the following message: iFnKeyState=EFnKeyPressed....
if i press it again quickly the message changes to iFnKeyState=EFnKeyPressedAgain
and if i press something else immediately after this then i see  iFnKeyState=EFnKeyPressedNone.
Can anyone suggest what's happening or how i can get the phone out of this mode?
It's obiously some sort of diagnostic mode that it seems to be locked into.....i've reinstalled the firmware several times with no success at changing this "feature".
Ps. i already know that you can get the desired orange coloured symbols by keeping the key pressed....
Thanks in advance for your time.

What exactly are you trying to debug. At the end of your method it will go back to the next line on the calling method. You can check that in the stack window(next tab to the structure pane) where you will find the entire stack of flow. You can also use Step out of the current method in to the calling method.

My ipod classic won't connect to anything.  My mac doesn't recognize it, my ipod player doesn't recognize it and my car radio plug in doesn't recognize it.  It won't charge unless I put it in diagnostic mode, but once its charged it will play just fine with headphones.  Help! What can I do to fix it?

I also already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes again and that didn't do anything either.

• LIN Diagnostic mode with VI / C (DLL)

Hello all,
I'm trying to communicate with a DUT using LIN Diagnostic mode.
I'm making use of the NI PCI-8516.
I had a look at the examples on the CD that came with the product.
There are VI and VS C examples.
With the VS examples, I saw that sending PDU packets with LIN isn't implemented.
With Flexray, it is.
I tried modifying the LIN VI examples to send PDU packets (see examples).
Everything is set on PDU and I also modified the LDF for diagnostic mode.
I tried to modify the Init LIN Frame array VI .
After running, following exeption is given:

Someone experienced this error before?
Is it even possible to use LIN diagnostic mode with a VI using NI XNET?
Does anyone by chance ever created a driver (dll/ VS project) which can communicate over LIN diagnostic mode?
Thanks in advance!!

• Question about iPod 4th Gen Diagnostic Mode

I am having a problem with my iPod. 4th Generation, 40GB Model A1059.
I am interested in what should be the expected results in two of the Diagnostic modes.
HDD R/W; and
HDD SCAN
In the Scan test mode, I get a "Pass" message and when I press "play" I go back to the diagnostic mode menu. So I guess this means I passed the HD Scan.
In the R/W test mode, I get a message that reads
HDD Test
38 GB
But pressing 'play' nothing happens, and it seems (feels and sounds)like the hard drive is still spinning.
So is the test still underway, or am I finished with the test when I see the "38 GB" message on the display?
I did a search of this site and the internet and really can't figure out what the anticipated result should be. It just won't let me search under "HDD R/W" It seems that the / is some kind of boolean conector that the search engine reads as something other than a ASCII character.
For anyone who may be interested in my problem, here it is:
It used to run forever with the Apple Logo. I put it away and came back to it recently hoping the problem would have magically gone away. Well it hasn't. Now the HDD just 'clicks' It goes something like 1,2,3,"click"... 1,2,3"click" until the file folder with an exclamation pint comes up.
Interestingly enough, the 1,2,3,"click"... 1,2,3"click" happens in the HD Scan Mode Test, but when I run the HDD R/W mode test the drive seems to spin freely without the 'click'
