Dial-up connection disconnecting

When importing a CD, my dial-up Internet connection disconnects after each song has finished importing. The importing doesn't seem to be affected, but I keep having to reconnect.
Does anyone have any idea why this occurs?

hi Michelle!
where do I begin trying to find the culprit?
actually, i just remembered seeing somewhere (i've lost the thread, though) someone reporting a problem with their internet connection that went away after they updated their
b sound card drivers
(of all things).
so let's try working through this document on sound problems in itunes. let's try/check-on
b everything
there, and see if a sort of "audio spring clean" fixes both problems for you.
(thinking here that since neither of us know
b precisely
what's going on, this can at least provide us with a structured place to start our investigations.)
love, b

  • Dial-up connection disconnects when importing CDs into iTunes

    When importing a CD, my dial-up Internet connection disconnects after each song has finished importing. The importing doesn't seem to be affected, but I keep having to reconnect. This is very annoying!
    Has anyone else had this problem, and how can I fix it?

    This is also a known phenomenon on Macs with a dial-up connection.
    For Macs there is a workaround, but no solution yet.
    By using an Applescript, the firewall settings will be toggled on CD insert, preventing iTunes to contact Gracenote (to get track information).
    I don't know something similar for Windows.
    Maybe you can write some code yourself.
    The URL to block (temporary) is "http://service.gracenote.com"
    You can always get the track information later by selecting all tracks of an imported CD and choosing 'Get CD Track Names' from the Advanced menu in iTunes.

  • Want to disable/"grey out" dial-up connection "settings" button in the "connections" tab of Internet Options

    Hi, I'm looking to "grey out" a dial-up connection for some users in workplace, so that they are forced to use our VPN client in order to access the web. Does anyone know if this is possible?
    I know you can disable all settings on that tab using local group policy, (e.g. Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer) but I only want to disable a specific dial-up connection (for usb 3G modems).
    I've read of various IE settings being locked down in the registry here, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions, but havent seen the settings I want.
    The actual connection is visible here, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections, I just cant figure out how to grey it out. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Where is the option to set up a dial-up connection in firefox 12?

    I am using a G3 USB modem as my internet connection - Firefox 12 seems to think I'm connecting through a network when I'm using a dial-up connection.
    IF I open IE8 first - which automatically dials the connection and then open Firefox 12 connect quite happily BUT if I just open Firefox 12 I get no connectivity,
    I want to use Firefox 12 cos I dislike IE8 - how do I tell Firefox 12 that it is meant to auto-dial a dial-up connection?

    Hi Tobbi,
    Thank you.
    I've followed the instructions, Rebooted, opened Firefox 12 and got the 'No connection' error again.
    Checked in services - those 3 are running - so I guess the answer is NO. no help but thanks
    Also, it says no auto-disconnect option - download 'hang up' but that link seems to be dead - Firefox can't find the server at www1.physik.tu-muenchen.de.
    Any ideas please?
    Thanks again

  • Flash accessing the Dial Up connection

    I'm new to the forums, so hello to everybody.
    I've got a project on my hands, an interactive kiosk. I've created the interface in Flash, but I have some issues I can't get past. First of all, I want to create an emergency call feature, where the user presses a button and the kiosk dials the emergency number (112 for Europe). Now, how can I make the Flash movie call upon Windows' dial up connection, dial a number, establish a connection then disconnect? I know that Flash can't use Windows services directly, so how can I accomplish this?
    My second issue is that I also would like to create a photo-shoot system, where the Flash movie takes a snapshot from the webcam, saves it as a file, then the user needs to input his email address and the file is sent by email as an attachment.
    I hope I've been clear enough. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  • SLOW internet dial up connection

    I bought a Power mac G4 with internal v92 modem. My connect speed is only 28.8k with a average through put of 19k. I can take my wifes PC Computer, plug it into the same wall jack that the Mac was in and get a 50.6K connection with a average through put of 46K. My old PC always connected and still connects at 50.6K on the same wall jack. I am very remote and will never have anything but dial up, 28.8K is not useable.
    Reading in some of the OLD posts, it seems like many people with Tiger and the version before it lost connect speed. People wiht older OS have normal speed.
    Is there a fix ? I talked with Apple Tech Support and they deny there is a problem.
    What about a external USB Modem ? It appears that Zoom makes the only external USB that will run with Mac.
    Thanks for any help possible. I am running OS 10.4.7

    Thanks for the link to the other discussion. I too have the problem when connecting to the web that It streams the "connecting" message but does not dial or make any noise and is not connected to the phone line. It just continues to stream the "connecting" message. If I select "disconnect" then it streams the "disconnecting" message and is completely hung -the computer is not hung, just the modem. I can sometimes get out of this by disconnecting the modem and plugging it back in. That worked for a while but more and more it just crashes and requires a restart. Then after a restart I can get a 28.8K The streaming/slow conect is random in pattern.
    This is serious. I too read the user reports on the Apple Store regarding the USB Modem. No Sale on that Modem. Now, I doubt the Zoom will help either.
    Apple needs to realize and respond to this problem, its on going. As I mentioned before, Not everyone in the US has Broadband.
    I am test driving this Power Mac G4 to see the differences between it and PC/Windows for my business. It will be a capital expense to buy all new Macs or PC's. I am very impressed with Mac, In fact wish I got a Mac a long time ago. Howwever, If Apple Cant, Wont or does not know how to give a good modem dial up connection, I will not be able to replace my ageing PC's with Macs. My business requires a lot of Internet use.
    Please take note Apple, this is a business application, your falling short !!!

  • Hotspot like Dial Up connection

    I want to know why when I have 4-5 bars of service on my Iphone 4s and I use the personal hotspot to connect to the internet on my laptop, the internet connection is so slow it's like being on a dial up connection. I had the HTC EVO before I bought the Iphone 4s and used the personal hotspot on it to connect to the internet on my laptop and it was great. Very fast worked seamlessly. The hotspot connection on the Iphone *****. I have the same service I had with the HTC EVO and am in a different spot and have more service bars now then I did with that phone and I swear I'm using a dial up connection now...

    Upgraded to Firefox 8.0 . . . dail-up lasting a bit longer, but still disconnects.
    It seems like nobody is able to help me.

  • Checking status of a dial up connection

    I'm trying to develop a program that checks whether a dial up connection has been established. I'm using a thread to attempt to open a URLConnection every 5 seconds.
    If opening the connection succeeds the connection status is set to true. If an exception occurs the status is set to false. In general this approach works fine, with one exception.
    If I start the thread with a dial-up connection established the thread sets the status to true. When the dial up is then disconnected it sets it to false. This is just what I need.
    However if I start the thread the status is set to false and stays that way even when the dial up has been established. It's very strange that the method works fine one way and doen't work at all another way. If anyone can clear this up i'd appreciate it
    Here's the code
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    public class ConnectionStatusThread extends Thread
         public static boolean INTERNET_CONNECTED = false;
         public ConnectionStatusThread( String name )
              super( name );
         public void run()
              System.out.println( "ConnectionStatus Thread Running" );
              while ( !Thread.interrupted() )
                   URL gfr = null;
                   URLConnection conn = null;
                   try
                        gfr = new URL( "http://www.goodfridayrobotics.com/" );
                   catch ( MalformedURLException meu )
                        System.err.println( meu.getMessage() );
                   try
                        conn = gfr.openConnection();
                        conn.connect();
                        INTERNET_CONNECTED = true;
                   catch( IOException ioe )
                        INTERNET_CONNECTED = false;
                   System.out.println( "Connected = " + INTERNET_CONNECTED );
                   //conn = null; doesn't make any difference if set to null
                   //gfr = null;
                   try
                        Thread.sleep(5000);
                   catch(InterruptedException e)
                        System.err.println( "InterruptedException" );
                        System.err.println( e.getMessage() );
    }

    It's ok everyone I changed the URL + URLConnection to a socket and that solved the problem

  • 80 GB iPod and a dial-up connection

    Hello everyone,
    Can someone please tell me if it is possible to use the 80GB iPod with a dial-up connection? I know that it is a lot slower and I am worried that it may affect the downloading process of a movie or book. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
    Compaq   Windows XP

    Hi saem,
    When you sync your iPod with iTunes, it actually doesn't relate to connections with the Internet.
    iTunes doesn't connect to the Internet to simply sync with your iPod (apart from going to the internet to check your if your iPod's firmware is the latest), so I don't see how you could have problems, in that respect.
    (I just proved this to myself - I disconnected from the Internet during an iPod sync, and it was all successful.)
    Now, if your computer have a full, slow hard drive, or lower RAM than normal, that's different (since those kinds of things don't exactly pertain to Internet connection, Dial-Up or not).
    Forgive me if I didn't read your question properly, or something.

  • Leaking netbios packets over dial up connection

    I have used a verizon USB internet card for over 1 1/2 years and have just recently started having issues. After about 6 minutes I am disconnected from the internet. After several hours on the phone with verizon tech support, I was informed that my computer was "leaking netbios packets over my dial up connection." When I called apple the guy I spoke to told me he had never heard of such a thing. Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it???

    I guess you're using BootCamp and WinXP ??
    In Windows, right-click on the hard drive
    Highlight TCP/IP and select properties
    Click on the Advanced button
    Go to the WINS tab and select "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
    Click OK to accept changes and close the window

  • How monitor the use of dial-peer (Connect Time)

    How monitor multiple dial-peer (Connect Time) ??
    When this reaches the defined time accumulated connected (example: Connect Time = 10000) shutdown the dial-peer.
    UC520#show dial-peer voice 2 | beg Connect
    Connect Time = 1430, Charged Units = 0,
    Successful Calls = 2, Failed Calls = 0, Incomplete Calls = 0
    Accepted Calls = 0, Refused Calls = 0,
    Last Disconnect Cause is "10  ",
    Last Disconnect Text is "normal call clearing (16)",
    Last Setup Time = 1445373634.
    Last Disconnect Time = 1445375144.
    enable dial-peer in a day of the month date concurrently (example: Every day 15 of each month)
    commands used:
    clear statistics dial-peer voice 1
    show dial-peer voice 1 | beg Connect Time
    Thanks
    Felix Guzman

    This should be doable with an EEM policy.  If I understand you correctly you want to watch for connect time to reach 10000 when it does you want to shutdown the dial peer.
    And then enable every 1th day of each month.
    The first part you would do with a watchdog EEM policy which periodically runs and checks the output of the show dial-peer voice 2 command.
    The second part you probably would use a second EEM script to trigger on a cron timer set for the 15th day of the month, and have it run the commands you mentioned.
    Thanks.

  • PBG4 v92 modem connect-disconnect

    Don't usually have to use dial-up connections, but I needed one today. First time, it worked as usual.
    But everytime after (2nd thru 6th attempts) the connect script would scroll in the header, and scroll, then go into an attempted disconnect, except it would never never never complete the disconnect. I'd have to reboot to terminate the endless disconnect ribbon.
    The only issue I can think of was while trying to clean up Entourage (while being off-line), I got the spinning beach ball of death.
    What could be the connection between Entourage 10.1.1 & 10.3.8 that would render the modem incapable of connecting-disconnecting properly??
    I tried repairing permissions/priviledges, but there was nothing reported as needing fixing.
    OK, go figure! I'm editing this post using the dial up & internal modem. Connected just fine. Guess I'll have to wait for another "odd-ball" incident.

    Similar problems here, but my 'book dials, runs through the various sounds, then repeats them — never making the final connection. This problem manifested about 4 months ago. At first, it began losing connections more frequently, then having difficulty making the initial connection on the first try, and now it won't connect at all. The error I get in the connection log window is : "Connection Script Failed." I never get the beach ball.
    Solutions I've tried: Rebooting, rebuilding permissions, adjusting the modem script to connect at all available speeds (v.34, etc.), using modem scripts from 10.2.8, doing a clean install of 10.3.3. None have produced any results.
    The phone lines in my area are not great. However, I was able to sucessfully connect on said lines for 2 years previously, so I doubt that's the issue. My wife connects, using the same cable on her PC laptop, with no problem.

  • Unable to achieve dial-up connection with G4 Powerbook

    I have a G4 PowerBook that I use with a Netgear wi-fi router for Broadband and my server, Virgin. I want to use the PowerBook with just a dial-up connection to another server, BT. I turn off Airport. I have spent a long while with the BT helpline. I do all the settings they suggest. Then I finally press, Connect. I read: "connecting to server". Then it obviously fails and says Disconnecting. Disconnnecting continues ad infinitum and can only be terminated by doing a Restart. What am I doing wrong, please?

  • I lost the dial up connection dialog box. I unchecked a check item in the dial connetion box. How do I get the dial up connection back?

    I established a dial up connection by updating to automatic the remote managers and telephony in administrative tool services area on my XP system according to firefox help instructions.
    At first I had a dial up connection but I unchecked an item in the
    dial up connection box. I am not sure what I unchecked or toggled
    off. I then lost the dial up connection. I need to get the dial connection dialog box back. What needs to be done
    Thank you.

    I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
    But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
    If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
    Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
    BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
    What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
    I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
    I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
    I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
    BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
    Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour.
