Dial Up Connection Problems

I had a great connection months ago, but recently began getting disconnected within a few minutes of being online. I get a message that the modem has unexpectedly hung up. Since my friends computer stays online for hours with no issues, I know the phone line is not to blame. Should I try trashing the modem prefs? If so, how is it done in Tiger?

hi Bob, I've called up my ISP and was told that "theirs is more compatible with microsoft users" but they did not directly answer my question if Mac users are having problems. These are the limitations of living in a third world country like ours,oh well. As for a modem problem I'm still trying to figure out how to know it without rushing the unit for repair. Is there a way? Thanks!

  • Dial-up connect problem after 10.4.9 update

After installing the 10.4.9 update it has been very difficult to connect to the dial-up internet server. It may take 19 tries clicking "Connect" before it connects and sometimes it connects after four tries. The error messages vary: unable to connect to PPP or no carrier detected are the most frequent messages. Once on-line everything works fine except for being able to send mail. I'm unable to send mail - that error message wants the SMTP server settings and any advanced settings checked.
I called Apple support and the Apple Tech had me reconfigure the Network to dial an "800" number to a PPP Dial-Up Test Site. When that worked succussfully a window displayed a message that the modem, the PPP or Remote Access software, the TCP/IP software is functioning and correctly configured for a PPP connection to this server. The Apple Tech checked the information on the 10.4.9 upgrade and did not find any reason to think it would cause this problem. Apple Tech suggested I contact the dial-up server.
The dial-up server went over all the configurations and they were all correct. During my phone call to them they could hear the computer dial-up sounds and said it sounded like the normal "hand-shake". The dial-up server has had no reports of problems with connecting to their service other than mine.
If anyone knows what could have caused this problem, how to fix it or has the same problem I'd be very interested in hearing from them.
    Thanks, AppleProblem

You have been most helpful and we think the problem is solved. After I send this message explaining what has transpired I'll go back and click on the "Solved" button.
Based upon your suggestion to try "Script, like v32" I started experimenting with the four internal modem options we have in our Modem settings. They are v.32, v.34, v.90 and v.92. I tried to connect three different times with each one. The v.32 didn't connect, the v.34 connected all three times, the v.90 connected the first two but not the third or the fourth try. On the fifth attempt the Mac froze up, the mouse/arrow wouldn't work and there was a high speed motor sound. I tried a Force Quit (Option,Command,Escape), I tried a Hard Shut Down (holding the power key) and when these didn't work I pulled the plug. Then, I booted back up and connected on the second try using the v.90. I don't know why the computer froze up and assume it is nothing to be concerned about.
I then called our ISP and found that the two access numbers are both v.90. I suspect that until we did the version upgrade to the 10.4.9 that our computer was accommodating the v.90 eventhough it was a v.92 (!?!). Just a guess.
I also asked the ISP tech why we couldn't send mail. He asked if we had the password set for the outgoing mail. He said if we're using the access number owned by them it didn't require a password but the other access number is not owned by them and is used by other ISPs and it does require a password. We had never set up our Mail Preferences outgoing mail settings to use a password. Before our connect problems we had always used the number owned by them and after the connect problems we started using the other number because we found that we could connect to it with fewer attempts. We put in the necessary information and now have no problem sending mail.
We have also been looking for another ISP and the web site you gave us www.fastermac.net looks very promising. They have one access number in our area and we want to check if it is v.92 or v.90. During our research for an ISP we learned that if it is a v.92 access number (and we use our v.92 modem) we'll be able to answer phone calls and remain online. That will be a real blessing. Thanks!
We really appreciated your brain storming with us and your perseverance. Thanks so much!

  • Dial-up connecting problems

Hi there. I have an older iMac (a G4 flat screen type, a couple of years old) with a problem connecting to the internet. I live in the backwoods and can only get dial-up, the phone system's not the best, but my isp is a good one. When I try to connect, it usually takes 2-10 times to make a connections. It goes through the usual connecting noises, then goes to a solid tone, like a dial tone but higher. Then I get a message that says there was a modem error, to check my settings and try again. The isp says they aren't familiar with the problem, and other people I know that use the same isp never have the problem, even those living on my street. I was thinking it was my phone line, then read another post (which I can't find this morning) with a similar problem who solved it by buying an external modem. The difference was, I think she had no problem with an iMac like mine, then had the problem with a G5 iMac. But I'm still thinking the problem could be my internal modem. I will attach the specs for my modem, if that helps any. If people think I should get a new modem, which one would you recommend? I would like to not spend much money if possible. By the way, once I get connected I never have problems with disconnections. And I don't have any ethernet, airport, nothing like that, just a plain phone line to my phone jack. Simple.
    Thanks for your help....
These are the specs for the internal modem.
    Modem Model:     Dash2
    Firmware Version:     APPLE VERSION 2.6.3
Country:     B5 (United States, Latin America)
    Driver:     InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.3)
    Interface Type:     USB
    SKU Name:     UCJ
    Modulation:     V.92
    Hardware Version:     1.0F

While I have the same modem I do get a good connection at 46666, however latest update 10.4.3 available it is near impossible to download it. Being 56.8mb it is too large to handle before the modem dies and one has to start from scratch again. Yes I can download it through the PB and transfer it but the fact that the iMac modem is so poor that we cannot even down load an update s a worry. Trying directly through Safari means a larger update and downloads at 2.3 kb/s, still dies and will not reconnect and continue due to the poor Safari download software. Through Firefox I can get 4.4 kb/s but still dies and reconnecting does not allow a continuation so we have to start from scratch again. 15 hours of wasted download time yesterday and nothing to show for it.
Here is the interesting point, Apple states that there is NO known problem with this modem !!!!!! But as many have said prior to 10.3.9 the modem was running pretty smooth but from then on has become a liability. Obviously I am making a formal complaint to Apple as we speak about this as they have it seems removed support for the modem which prevents the ability to perform OS software updates.
Maybe they should supply us with these new little external USB modems they have brought out for the new G5 iMacs.

  • Dial up connection problem

If i leave the internet cord pluged into the computer when i start up, or after i disconnect from the internet, it says the phone line is busy and wont connect. If I unhook the cord and reconnect it, then try connecting to the internet it connects right away. Is there some way to fix this? I cant figure out what the problem is besides maybe something being wrong with the modem.

What type of modem are you using Brand/Model, is it a USB or the built in?? Give as much info as you can and someone can help. Barbara is quite knowledgable if memory serves me correct. Also if you search this Forum and even go back 6 months or more you will find lots of info. Bob

Try deleting the account(s) you're having problems with, resetting your phone (hold on/off and home buttons simultaneously 10-15 seconds until Apple logo appears, release buttons and wait for it to restart), then add back your mail accounts.  I've read that this has worked for some.

  • Modem problems with dial-up connection

    Hello,
I just bought a used G4 12 inch Powerbook a few days ago. I have been trying to get on the internet and checked all connections and gone through as much as I know of System Preferences and just can not get a dial tone, can not get the modem working. This is just for simple dial-up connection. I know the phone line is good because I am using it in another machine right now. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Thanks to all of you who have responded. At first I thought perhaps I needed a modem line as I was using a phone line, so I bought a modem line at Wal-Mart. Unfortunately it did not work either. My wife has a computer tech at work who specializes in MacIntosh and looked at it yesterday, he determined that I just have a bad modem. So, my next step is to take it into the local Apple Store, whenever I have time, perhaps by the start of winter. Eventually I will have a machine up and running again - eventually.

  • Dial Up Connection or lack of !

I have been trying for several days now to establish a dial up connection at my mothers home without success. Both the BT Dial Up department and BT Fault reporting have been exceedingly helpful in trying to give assistance but the end result remains "No Dial Tone" when the modem tries to connect. BT have increased the gain on the line as much as possible without success.
They tell me the property is 6km from the exchange and this could be the problem. I thought every phone line should be able to get dial up regardless of distance from the exchange.
I have tried disabling the modem option to listen for a diial tone and also plugged directly into the inside of the master socket with no joy.
BT have offered to send a field engineer but have stated if he finds he can get a dial up signal with his equipment there will be a charge and I can't take that chance.
Does anyone have any ideas. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and an external US Robotics USB modem. When I connect using the same sign in and configuration at my own property everything is just fine so it would not seem to be anything to do with settings or computer hardware.
I originally intended to use a mobile broadband doingle but the address is in a total blackspot on all networks. Broadband is too expensive for the minimul use needed at my mums address and I guess that could even struggle being 6km from the exchange.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Dial- up- Connection pop-up

I upgraded from WRT54GX2 Router & WPC54GX4 Notebook Adapter to a WRT160N Router & WPC600N Notebook Adapter. Installation was a breeze, everything work great except LELA. LELA works somedays. My problem is now I get the "Dial-up-connection" pop-up menu which causes IE to switch to "Work offline". I just cancel the "Dial-up-connection" menu, then another pop-up "Webpage unavailable while offline" which I also cancel, then uncheck "Work Offline" on the Internet Option menu. After all this, my Internet connection comes back until the pop-up menu appears again. Never had this issue with the WRT54GX2 or WPC54GX4. Does anyone have a solution to this annoying problem?

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Connection > Check never dial a connection and delete any items from the list > OK. Open a new broswer and check.

  • HT5730 After I installed 10.8.48.4 Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection.  How can I get back to normal operating speed?

After I installed 10.8.4, my Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection -- unless it froze up completely.  How do I get my system back to a normal operating mode?  Can I dump 10.8.4 and go back to the one that at least worked?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Sharing the dial-up connection of a PC laptop--either wired, or wirelessly

Hello, fellow Mac users! I just got my first Mac--a beautiful 1.83 GHz MacBook. I LOVE the switch to OS X from Windows XP.
    Anyway, here's problem:
I am leaving on vacation, and, unfortunately the resort at which we are staying does not have Internet Access, so I am forced to use dial-up. Unfortunately, since I have heard very bad reports about the Apple USB Modem, I can't get a modem for the MacBook itself, so I will use my PC laptop's modem. The PC Laptop is a Windows XP Pro machine. So, here's the problem--try as I might, I just cannot get the darn PC laptop to share its dial-up connection; either over a ethernet cross-over cable, or adhoc Wi-Fi.
So, please help me get this to work, or I will be forced to use a PC laptop to check e-mail, RSS feeds, and anything else online.
Thanks in advance! (And thanks, Steve Jobs, for helping to create some of the best computers out there!)

Here is from the help support on xp :
    Configure,a dial-up
connection, click the connection that you want to
configure, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change
    settings of this connection.
Do one or more of the following:
To configure dialing devices that your computer uses
to make a connection (a modem, for example), phone
numbers, host addresses, country or region codes, or
dialing rules, click the General tab.
To configure dialing and redialing options, or X.25
    settings, click the Options tab.
To configure identity authentication, which is a way
to help verify your computer’s identity when making a
connection, data encryption (which codes the content
so that it’s less likely to be readable by someone
other than the intended recipient), or terminal window
and scripting options, click the Security tab.
To configure the remote access server that you want to
connect to and protocols (the format that your
computer uses to communicate with other computers)
used for this connection, click the Networking tab.
To turn Internet Connection Sharing on or off or
configure your computer to establish a dial-up
connection automatically, click the Advanced tab.
    When you run the
Network Setup Wizard and enable Internet Connection
Sharing, some protocols, services, interfaces, and
routes are configured automatically. The following
    table describes these configured items.
    Configured item Action
IP address 192.168.0.1 Configured with a subnet mask
of 255.255.255.0 on the LAN adapter that is connected
to the home or small office network.
    Autodial feature Enabled.
Static default IP route Created when the dial-up
    connection is established.
    Internet Connection Sharing service Started.
DHCP allocator Enabled with the default range of
192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Unique
addresses in the range 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254
are allocated to private network clients.
So try to use dhcp on your network setting or something between those range listed above with a cross over cable (make sure the cross over cable has good connection).

  • How do I establish a dial-up connection in Labview to FTP files (I have the internet connectivity toolkit)?

I'm writing an application that will automatically update files on a server, using the internet toolkit's FTP vi's. It works fine with a LAN, but I'm not sure how to establish a dial-up connection via a telephone modem.
Ultimately, I'd like the program to dial-up, connect, ftp files, then hang up. So far I have used AT commands through the serial compatiblity vi's to dial up and logon to a local internet provider. The provider then spat out an IP number and an MTU number (1524), followed by periodic spurts of garbabe.
Any help in getting to the next level would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Tom

    Tom,
You CANNOT dial-up to the ISP using the Internet Developers Toolkit. The toolkit assumes you already have a valid TCP/IP connection. However, many web browsers such as Netscape and Internet Explorer have auto-dialing options that will start dial-up networking automatically when you launch your browser. The only trouble is that the auto-dial wizards can require the user to push buttons, but there is a Shareware program called DUNCE which will take care of the button pushes for you in the auto-dial wizards so the user does not have to intervene in the dial-up process. You can recommend to the customer that the lauch their browser from LV and then have the browser configured for auto-dial and that should take care of the problem. I did not actually try this o
ut myself, but in theory it should work.

  • Sharing a Vista Dial up connection with a Mac wire wirless connection

I have a problem i would like to share the internet connection from my wifes PC (dial up connection) with my mac book pro via wireless connection between each computer. Now it works ok (after fiddling with firewall on PC) when we have the dial up connection on the mac and use the wireless from the PC to access the internet the same time. but it does not work the other way. I tried to allow sharing on both the dial up or wireless, I have not found the same option which we have in the mac to tell the wireless connection which internet connection is to be shared. Is there any easy way to do it or must i pay a wireless router to access the dial up connection.

    i guess you should try
    String cmd = "c:\windows\dialup.exe";
    String envp [] = null; //environment variable
    Runtime.exec(cmd, envp);

  • Initiate a dial-up connection or detect whether I am connected to the net

I want to initiate a dial-up connection from my java program and also to detect whether I am connected to the internet or not.

well I am developing a proxy server and I want to add
a feature of dial-up demand that detects the current
connection status and if not connected to the net then
call the dial-up dialers in dial-up networking folder
and then connects to the internetI'd say it works like I wrote earlier:
Keep yourself in the proxy-server the connections-status.
If your proxy-server runs on a normal PC, it should be enough to try to connect to the internet.
But do you need control over multiple dial-up dialers etc., this probably isn't enough.
If I can find the time, I'll look into it.
Maybe direct access to the modem is also an option.
That depends on the modem of course and then you probably also need additional scripting. I guess that's not what you're looking for, but if you need info on that, it's probably also an option to look at a wvdial-script on Linux for connection to the internet. It might also be a problem if you have multiple channels for connecting onto the internet (cable, phone,ASDL etc.)

  • How to have my dial up connection added to the network utility program?

how to have my dial up connection added to the network utility program for monitoring? though i am connected by dial-up, the connection is not monitored by the utility program. the drop down box there does not show the modem at all. ?

Huh? I don't understand what you are asking. I just pulled up the network utility and I don't see what kind of connection monitoring it does for any kind of connection? What kind of information are you looking to obtain? What problem are you interested in solving by having your question answered?

  • Dial-up connection freezes programs

I am having a strange problem. :? When I am connected with my dial-up modem, some programs won't start (e.g. kuickshow) or will freeze when I try to open a dialog window such as open/save file (e.g. kedit, kdiff3, firefox).  If I am not connected or if I am connected with my network card, everything works fine. I think the problem started a few weeks ago when there was problems with firefox.
I am using kppp, KDE  3.3.2, the ltmodem drivers and the stock kernel 2.6.10
Any idea about what might be the problem?

Well... Yesterday, I notice that if my network is running
    /etc/rc.d/network start
,  everything is fine.  However if I stop it,
    etc/rc.d/network stop
I have the same problem when my dial-up connection is running.  :?  I think that it is a problem with my network setup in rc.conf.  A month ago or so, I changed my network setting from dhcp to static.  It might be related to my problem.  I still need to check that out.
