Dial-up is dropped after about 15 successful events... but for no reason.

My G5 is consistent in alerting me that the modem "cannot be found" even though I had at least 15 successful connections previously. Then it lets me know that "system preferences" changed the setting even though I had it locked. What is going on here?
How can I make the G5 accept my dial-up permanently?
Thanks

See if the DVD will boot another Mac.
If don't have another Mac you can try one at the Apple store.
That will you if the problem is the DVD or your Mac.
