Dial-up Modem not detected

Problem:
My system isn't recognizing/finding my internal modem.
What I have:
wvdial and gnome-ppp set up.  From the Wiki, I gave all users permission to use wvdial.
What I know:
I ran PuppyOS and was able to get the modem to work - so it's there and functions. (PuppyOS uses wvdial) The modem is at /dev/ttys_PCTELO and I have an init string (though it's a bit different than the one gnome-ppp shows.)
Question:
How do I get Arch to find the modem?

Maybe you could take a look at:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dia … aler_HOWTO
It (supposedly) enables you to connect without a dialer.

  • Internal modem not detecting dial tone

I have an iMac G3 CRT 333MHz (Lime) which is having trouble connecting to my dial-up internet connection. I am fearing that my internal modem is 'burnt out', and am wondering if anyone out there has any additional troubleshooting tips, or any advice on purchasing a new external modem.
The trouble started after a lightning storm, which also disrupted internet connections for my roommate's PC (I don't know exactly how he fixed his, but he is connected via a DSL modem and says he simply restored some modem drivers). I have noticed, however, that he removed his 56k modem...
When I attempt to dial-up from my Mac, I get a message stating "Modem did not detect a dial-tone or the line is currently in use..." I have checked and double checked that the phone line does indeed have a dial tone, and tried connecting through through various outlets throughout the house. I've disconnected all other phone hardware (except the DSL filters) and reached the same result.
I am currently running OSX (10.3.9), and also attempted to dial out after restarting in 9.2.2. (Same result). After that, I dug out my install CD and reinstalled 10.3 (same result)
From each OS, I've run system profiler and recieved no unusual information about the internal modem. The computer definitely senses that I HAVE a modem (Apple Vsn 0007-1,9/2/1998 v.90) That modem simply can't seem to detect the dial tone.
I have also confirmed my modem settings, tried checking and unchecking the 'sound' and 'wait for dial tone' boxes. My internet provider is NetZero, so I have attempted to dial in using their software, as well as directly through Internet Connect. All attempts return the same message. (and the NetZero account is still active, I have accessed it from two separate computers).
Any thoughts out there if there are any further settings or or software/OS variations I should try? Or are my suspicions valid that the storm somehow fried the modem (there were no power interruptions during the storm... only modem troubles)
My next step might be to find an external modem. I've not seen any Mac-compatible 56k modems in stores. There is a Apple USB Modem in the Apple store, but it requires OS 10.4.3 and a computer 'without a built-in modem', so I don't think that will help me. I've also considered using Airport to share my roommate's DSL connection, but I believe that my model of iMac is not airport compatible...
I also have a dead iMac in the closet (DV model) with a blown ethernet port, broken fan, and damaged hard drive. I'm not above cannibalizing either machine to get the other working until I can afford a new G5...
Any thoughts, suggestions, or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!!

The only thing I can think of is to go in to the modem settings and choose ignore dial-tone. That way even if it's not getting a good tone the iMac will continue to try to connect. This is also important if you have a voice mail system that varies the dialling tone whne you have a message as I know that stops my father's Win98 box connecting to the Internet unless the equivalent option is checked.
You can update your email address to a current one here. If the Apple ID (i.e. the one you login with) is old don't worry that's pretty irrelevant.

  • Help! Modem Not Detected!

need help. I just got my iMac today and I installed the AOL 5.0 thing. The AOL program isn't detecting the intenal modem. It is V.90 I supose, I do not see the modem cotrol panel in the apple menu. I tried all the apple internal modems form the list, I pluged in the phone line and I is saying Does Not Detect. I am not on my iMac so I can't take any confusing comands right now. Thanks. PLEASE HELP!

    Tiger -
Let's try one more thing. Open Macintosh HD. Scroll down to System Folder. Open System Folder and scroll down to Control Panels. Open Control Panels and see if Modem Control Panel is in the lineup. It's probably not since it doesn't show under the 'Apple'.
Just under Control Panels should be Control Panels (Disabled). Open that and see if Modem is in there. If it is, drag it to the closed Control Panels folder and do a restart.
If it's not in the disabled panels folder, do a Sherlock search for Modem and see what comes up. I guess it's possible that the modem panel has been put somewhere else in the HD. If it shows up, drag it to the closed Control Panels folder as above.
If the modem panel is totally absent from the HD, about all I can think of is to perform a Restore using the original CDs that came with the machine. But before that, I'll pose the problem to the larger gang here.

  • Modem Not Detected! UPDATE

Ok I posted this a while ago but I selected my internal modem for AOL V.5.0 (OS 8.6) and it wasn't detected(Trust me I tried everything). Well I was reading my Internal Modem read me amd it sasid that in the modem control panel it should say "Connect via Internal Modem" and mine says "Connect via <no serial ports available>". Ok. I think something fishys going on. I can't select from a list near the Connect via thing. My system profiler says it detects my modem. Can someone help? Please?
    In loving memory of TP2GO

I read back through as many of your past posts on this subject as I could find, and there's one subject missing that used to get a lot of posts here. AOL tended to corrupt the Modem Preferences, or replace them ... 'can't remember which.
The clean system install that Ron suggested is probably best, but you can go to the Preferences Folder in your System Folder and throw out the file labled "Modem Preferences", and anything to do with AOL Dialer. Restart the computer and see if there are some selections in your Modem Control Panel.
Instructions for a clean install are on the OS CD in a read-me file.

  • Help! - N80 as a dial-up modem not through GPRS

Does anybody know if it is possible to use the N80 to connect to a laptop for dial-up connection to my ISP. I'm talking about actually dialing a phone number to connect and not through GPRS (tethering). I already got tethering working, I'm just wondering if it is possible to get it to actually dial a phone number to connect. I have a lot of anytime minutes in my Cingular account and want to use them for this purpose. Thanks in advance.
What is the correct AT script to use for this to happen?

I think SIG has the answer, but I tried to find out on their various sites... seems that until you take the Hook, they won't tell you what the Line costs, then the cost of the Sinker will only be revealed once you get the Bill!
I think if they've picked up any traits from down here in GW land, that whatever YOU want to do will cost more than expected, and use the worst option for you!

  • New internal modem not detected

I installed a US Robotics v.92 faxmodem (model 5660A) into a dual 1.8 G5, 10.4.3. This computer came without an internal modem, but I need to send faxes occasionally.
The modem installed into a PCI slot. In the "About This Mac" apple menu selection, no PCI or modem info appears. I have tried resetting the PRAM, searching the US Robotics and Apple web sites for drivers (nothing for Macs.)
The modem was sold as a Windows and Mac compatible modem. Any suggestions?

    Hi Shau,
    Welcome to the forum.
USB DSL modems are notoriously buggy when it comes to OSX. Continuous need for updating drivers which, more often than not, cause more problems than they solve. My advice would be to invest in an ethernet adsl router. They do not require drivers, you just plug them in and with a minimum setup (literally seconds) you're up and running. Your ISP may be able to exchange the USB modem with an ethernet adsl router for you at no additional cost. Failing that you can buy one for literally tens of pounds.
More info on routers can be found here:

  • Are there any webcams that work on a dial-up modem with OSX  Tiger?

I've seen some discussions about specific webcams, but my problem is I'm on a dialup modem, without broadband. Though webcams exist that will work adequately for me with OS 9.x, there does not appear to be anything anywhere in the market that will work for with Tiger. The closest are the Logitech cams that stop at 10.2. Anybody have any suggestions?
Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   dial-up modem. not broadband available (I'm in the sticks)

Firewire cameras are natively supported in OSX.
Many USB cameras are supported using 3rd party
    driver
    such as <a</div>
    href="http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/"
    target="_blank">maccam.
You can also get drivers from ioxperts
    Tim,
Thanks for the quick response. However I was not
asking about digital cameras, I was asking about
    webcams. Am I missing something?
Yes you are missing something. I was talking about
    firewire webcams doh!
    http://www.macworld.com/2003/12/reviews/firewirewebcam
    s/
I've been following detailed threads on specific
webcams, and have not seen anyone have success for my
    situation.
What do you need a webcam for?
    Tim,
Thanks again. I'm learning a lo already by following your suggestions. I have no high-power needs, just basic video chattiing, but I'm in the sticks out here, on a 56K dial-up modem. Can't even get broadband. Many of the cams I've seen require high-speed internet. I can continue searching.
I will mark this question as answered by you, but if you have any particiular cameras to suggest, I will appreciate your inputs. I had already looked at Macworld without success.

  • Faxing - Modem Does Not Detect Dial Tone

    Hello Everyone,
I suddenly have a need to send and receive a Fax. I have a phone line plugged into the modem port on my G4 and on trying to send a text fax, not much happens. Error message to the effect that the modem is not detecting a dial tone. Same cable that works fine on the phone itself.
Can someone either help with an answer or direct me to a page with more detailed instructions than the "Help" file is providing?
    John

I have the same problem. I thought I would begin to use my several years old Powerbook to send a simple fax. As it is I have to use my old G3 to fax. Even with Faxstf pro on I still can't get it to work. Fax STF says that the modem is only set to receive and I just cannot change it in the settings. I've trashed the preferences and the program. I am at a loss after having spent a day trying to figure this out. I am on a dedicated phone line that works just fine. I would really like to just simply fax from my powerbook G4. The modem is as follows:
    Modem Model: LastDash
    Interface Type: USB
    Modulation: V.92
    SKU Name: UCJ
    Hardware Version: 4.0
    Firmware Version: APPLE VERSION 2.6.6
    Driver: InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.6)
Country: B5 (United States, Latin America)

  • Internet connection "Does not detect a dial tone" ????

    Help!
I have not been able to connect to the internet on my imac G5 for the last couple of weeks. I have tried the usual connect and restart computer and have spoken to my ISP who say it's not to do with them. The message 'does not detect a dial tone' comes up when i try and connect via the modem. I am now at a loss as to what to do. It does appear to be a Mac problem (having spoken to Mac support aswell), but short of re-installing the OS i am not sure what action to take next.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Noticed you are running Panther on an iMac G5? Is that correct?
What are your external modem settings in your System Preferences>Network/TCP/IP and modem panels? What changed in your system just prior to your not being able to connect to the Internet?
Short of reinstalling the OS, you can reapply the combo update for the particular version of OS X you are running.
    Please post back.

  • MAC pro 2013 model not detecting E122 USB Modem

    Hi,
For some reason, the light of USB modem doesnt glow, and neither is it detected. But when the Mac is restarted, the USB Modem does lit, and shows signs of being detected. Tried downloading Mobile Partner, but since the Modem is not detected, nothing proceeds. It worked well on my Windows PC.

Contact the vendors technical support unit.  Because it may work on a PC, it does not follow that it will work on a Mac.
    Ciao.

Please provide the following information so I can assist you better.
What type of connection do you have? (Analogue, DSL, Cable Modem)
Are you using the 2 wire phone cable?
Do you have distinctive ring set up on the line?
Is there any voice mail set up?
Do you have a answering machine? (Where is it connected to?)
Where is the fax cable connected to? (modem, wall jack)
Is there a phone also connected the printer?
    Have a nice day!

  • Initiate a dial-up connection or detect whether I am connected to the net

I want to initiate a dial-up connection from my java program and also to detect whether I am connected to the internet or not.

well I am developing a proxy server and I want to add
a feature of dial-up demand that detects the current
connection status and if not connected to the net then
call the dial-up dialers in dial-up networking folder
and then connects to the internetI'd say it works like I wrote earlier:
Keep yourself in the proxy-server the connections-status.
If your proxy-server runs on a normal PC, it should be enough to try to connect to the internet.
But do you need control over multiple dial-up dialers etc., this probably isn't enough.
If I can find the time, I'll look into it.
Maybe direct access to the modem is also an option.
That depends on the modem of course and then you probably also need additional scripting. I guess that's not what you're looking for, but if you need info on that, it's probably also an option to look at a wvdial-script on Linux for connection to the internet. It might also be a problem if you have multiple channels for connecting onto the internet (cable, phone,ASDL etc.)

Does "cannot access internet" mean no access to domain names e.g. can't open google.com, or no access to network e.g. can't ping 74.125.45.100?
If you can ping, but you can't resolve domains, edit your /etc/resolv.conf as required. If you can't ping, check your routing table after connecting.

  • Photoshop CC 14.1 GPU not detected (MacOS)

    So I upgraded to Photoshop CC 14.1  Mid 2009 Macbook, 10.8.4 6GB ram/NVDIA 9400M GPU 236 MB ram.
When I launch PS by itself, my GPU is detected. If I double click on a file, there is a delay in opening and I get this message:
All my OpenGL functions are disabled. So now what can be done to get my GPU working as it did in 14.0?
I'll guess I'm out of luck since NVDIA doesn't issue updated drivers for my GPU.
Just tell me what logfiles you need and how I can get them for you. I'm thinking maybe 14.1 is too much for this system and I'll have to dial back if this is not a bug.
