Dial up noises

Old school "Dial Up" noise is troublesome. I don't have modem. I don't need to be running any applications for this to happen but it seems to happen only when connected to wifi. I have had this happen on the old os X and the new Yosemite 10.10.2. Happens randomly through the day. Got rid of all cookies and uninstalled google crome, firefox, etc. and installed to see if that was the culprit. Wasn't. Help!

So I was driving through town the other day and making a call through my Bluetooth to the place I was ordering dinner from all of the sudden I got about 15 seconds of screeching and kind of like dial up noises then I kept saying hello but no one was there so I called back and the person on the phone said to them it just sounded like a regular disconnection no weird noises.
The noise you describe is like the sound to set up a fax call or a dial-up modem call. That could have been disturbance from something as you passed. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

So later that night I picked up my phone and at 10pm it said I was receiving a call but my phone was on silent so I hadn't heard it ringing before I picked it up I pressed the top button to ignore the call and then my phone said I had missed the call at 945 which didn't make any sense. Although where I was when it said I was getting the call was somewhere with very little service if any at all.
That just sounds as if there was a problem with receiving the call since you were in a low signal area. It may have been trying to get you the voicemail. Did you check to see if you had a voicemail?

Then when making phone calls the last day as it's ringing the other persons phone the volume seems to shift to a few different volumes before settling for the call.
This sounds to me like calls I make occassionally, and that has to do with the carrier. As the carrier sets up the call, it can vary in volume, generally associated with how it is handled on their network. It also happens with my Bluetooth headset on occassion, and also with the Bluetooth setup in my vehicle. The first ring is very loud, then the second ring is in a more normal volume that I had set on the devices.

  • HELP! Gray Screen & File Folder with Question Mark!

    Hello!
If anyone can offer suggestions or if you've dealt with this before I would love feedback so that we can fix this problem!
I recently converted my husband from a PC user to a Mac user (it was a happy day). A little over 1 month ago we bought a brand new 20" iMac and since then everything has gone quite smoothly, he's even said how happy he is with the switch!
Then yesterday morning as I lay sleeping in the other room a noise similar to dial up internet woke me. I went into the office to find the internet up on the screen of our iMac, Firefox wouldn't shut down so I tried force quitting, but that too did not work. Finally I pushed the power button, and went back to bed.
A few hours later as I went to check my email I powered on the iMac and got a gray screen. Nervous, I turned if off, and then back on in safe mode. I still got a gray screen but now with a file folder with a question mark inside flashing at me. Thankfully we're within the 1yr. warrenty so we took it back and they're diagnosing the problem....but I'm worried about the outcome.
Has anyone else had this problem? What was the result? What caused it? We save most everything onto external hard drives (thankfully!) so it's not as if the machine was being overloaded. It kept making that weird dial up noise too... kind of a bleeb, fans running, trying to work noise. Obviously my husband isn't so thrilled with Macs now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions - you have an intel iMac, and this is the PPC G5 forum, but even so, I would first advise you to buy Apple Care before then first year of ownership is up.
Then, I would remind you that all electronics will fail at some point, but the exact point is unknown and sometimes is much sooner than it should be. It would be interesting to hear from you what the exact failure was, there do not seem to be many reports of intel power supply failures, that seems to have been fixed since the era of the G5s.
The flashing question mark is usually a sign that the hard drive has failed and drives can fail at any point, yours may simply have some bad sectors; it could also be the logic board and again, they fail, but usually not within the first three years. Your machine may have been defective to begin with, it certainly doesn't sound as if you have been abusing it, so do please let us know what the ultimate diagnosis was.

  • Ongoing Broadband Issue - Any help would be much a...

    Hi,
I have had an ongoing issue with broadband speed for the last few months. I have spent hours on the phone to BT but I am still not getting anywhere. Everytime I report a slow speed (as in IP Profile of 135 and download speed of ~ 80mbps) I am assured by the technical team that they will resolve it once and for all, but everytime I am told they have reset things, changed the channel etc and I have to wait anything from 48hrs to 15 days. The speed will then improve for a bit before going back down again. I have had an engineer out who has found no issues but did replace the front of the main socket with a new one with a built in filter.
I only have the one main socket in the house and I have the bt home hub plugged in and my main phone plugged in to it.
Other things I have noticed are that there is a constant fuzzy noise on the phone line (although this disappeared instantly when I had to switch off the hub for one of the tests BT did). Often when using the phone I can hear a dial up noise in the background. And finally I have also noticed that if I'm online and then use the phone, I will very often lose my internet connection. When I hang up the internet connection is restored.
All of this seems to suggest a filter problem maybe? But I have tried 3 different microfilters and the new built in filter and the problem has been ongoing throughout.
I have tried to explain all of this to the offshore technical team, but instead of listening, they just tell me that they can fix my speed issue and I should rest assured that it will not occur again. I have supposedly spoken to managers and supervisors who will personally deal with it, and have even been promised a line upgrade and a 34M connection which was supposed to be active yesterday with a call last night to check but still nothing and no call (again).
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can progress this? I have had the connection 7 months so am still under contract so I am stuck with BT for the next 5 months at least. I am just not sure what to try next.
    Many thanks
    Lisa

ok no problems can you please do the following things they will help in sorting out your problems
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
And post the full results from http://speedtester.bt.com/
can you also do the bt quiet line test dial 17070 select option 2 you should hear no noise post back those results as well and will then be able to advise further

  • Home hub causing problems with phone line

I posted earlier about a phone extension problem- it seems the hub is the problem. My phone had no dial tone just lots of noise, there doesnt seem to be a wiring problem, however if I unplug the home hub the phone will work fine! I have tried a new cable to the hub, tried microfilters which I know are ok, but the problem is no dial tone ,noise, or a recorded voice saying please try again. I assume the hub has a fault unless someone has any other rsuggestions

have you tried connecting the hub and a phone to the test socket using a filter

  • ABS (Graphite) How to test Dialup Modem V90 functionality?

I recently ebayed a Graphite ABS. It would make an ideal back up for those occasions that broadband is not available with its inbuilt V90 Modem.
I have been able to connect and update successfully with cross over cable and wireless to the unit, and easily change settings.
I have not been able to utilise the V90 (or V34) modem function. I can change the settings and it attempts to dial up. Even with pulse dialing it fails to make any connection, I went so far as having it dial my mobile phone directly, but to no avail.
How do I test the v90 modem? Is there an INIT string to make it audibly dial (as was the case with my old windows creative modems)? Should it make the traditional dial up noise already?
Thank you in advance for your attention.

    Hi, robomarOse -
If you did not restart the machine after moving extensions around, do so - changes to the current extension set do not take effect until the machine has been restarted.
However when I now click on the modem I get ##The application "modem" could not be opened as "controller" could not be found##.
By "click on the modem" do you mean try to open the Modem control panel? That message is usually returned when the Modem control panel is not in the Control Panels folder when the machine is booted, and one or more of the extensions it needs is not active.
You may also need to enable (in Extensions Manager control panel) the following items used by Remote Access -
    Control Panels -
        Dial Assist
        Location Manager
        Remote Access
    Extensions -
        Location Manager Extension
        OpenTpt Remote Access
        OpenTpt Serial Arbitrator

  • My iphone dosen't doesn't make key tone sounds anymore when I write a text message or when I want to dial a phone number I don't know how to fix this problem, I don't hear the clicking noise anymore does anyone know how to fix this problem?

My iphone dosen't doesn't make key tone sounds anymore when I write a text message or when I want to dial a phone number I don't know how to fix this problem, I don't hear the clicking noise anymore does anyone know how to fix this problem? And all the sounds on my phone are on, even the keyboard clicks.

Try restarting your iPhone by holding down the on/off and the home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, double check the volume button just in case.  If you still can't hear the tones go into your settings>sounds and make sure the options are on.

  • Is there a way to set up a dial tone or a way for someone who is hard of hearing to have the phone set up to make a noise when I hold it up to my ear?

Is there a way to set up an dial tone or set the phone up to make a noise when I hold it up to my ear when i use it

I'm also not sure what you want to accomplish by this. Until you hit the "call" button, the phone is not 'off hook' like a traditional landline would be. There is no such thing as a dial tone on any cell phone. The dial tone was simply a carrier signal from the central office that prepared that end to listen for the pulses (later tones) generated when you dialed.

  • Noise on home phone(landline) every so often and poor dial up service

why can't verizon be better service providers and take the time to give you better phone service
i have to report the same problem every few weeks and the problem is never fixed for more than
2 days.   can't report problems at home due to the poor dial up service and poor phone lines
also get told that dsl is available by one person and then someone else tells you no.
i have no other options to either problem and that is probably why i get poor service

    welcome to the forum
openreach won't replace your line unless necessary so you need to keep reporting the fault to 151 and getting an engineer visit - surely they must from your description hear the noise on your line

  • When making a phone call, the other end of the line hears a strange dial up sounding noise. Its loud and quite annoying. What do i do?!

Loud screechy noises are heard on the other end of the line when my iphone 4s is in a phone call. It has to be my phone because multiple people and myself have confirmed hearing it. Its sounds like dial-up. BUT REALLY LOUD!

I just replied to a similar post and I'll copy and paste my response here. I was having the same exact issue. Here is my possible fix.
Yesterday I updated the OS to the latest release. Then right after that I called AT&T and they reset my sim card. Or something like that. They did some sort of reset.
I then got in my car and drove around to test the phone. Because that is when the problem is worse. FINALLY they claim to be able to hear me clearly!!!!
I think it was the combination of both the OS update and the sim card reset that fixed it. Hopefully..... It has only been one day but so far so good. I'll update this post if things change.
Try this and let us know if this works for you.

  • Popping noise with headphones and dialing a phone number in iOS6

After upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS6, I hear a loud pop when dialing the first number for a phone call and wearing the headphones.  I did not have this problem on iOS5.  My wife's iPhone4 had the same problem.  Anyone else experience this?

I have been struggling with this as well. I'm puzzled that I haven't found a solution. Conference calls in the "location" of Exchange appointments are pretty commonplace in my work environment and I have to think I'm not unique. I am currently using a "workaround". First I found that you can use a comma as a soft pause (3 seconds from the call connecting). That however didn't work when I tried it inside of the calendar details. The number becomes dial-able, but it ignores everything after the comma and treats it as normal punctuation. Since commas only work from inside the address book I just created address book entries for all of the bridge numbers I call on a regular basis. This doesn't solve the problem by any means but it solves it somewhat until they figure out that if the really want to be an enterprise device they need to copy Blackberry now and then whether they want to or not. What we need is numbers that are dial-able from not just inside the details, but in the header fields of an appointment - since that's where the organizer is usually going to put them in my experience. And please give us the "x" for a hard pause. I guess I should submit that huh? Anyway, I hear you. I doubt I was much help though, sorry.

  • Basic Voicemail making weird siren noise when dialed into

For some reason whenever I try to access my voicemail, it just makes a weird siren noise (sorta like a police siren) and never connects. Anyone who calls my phone and gets to my voicemail also hears this noise. I can successfully change the voicemail password via My Verizon, but still can't access the actual voicemail. This has been happening for over a year now, and I just recently upgraded my phone but the problem wasn't fixed. I forgot to mention this at the VZW store when I got the phone, so I am hoping someone here can help.
Both phones are just plain feature phones (current is a Samsung Gusto).
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Over a year? I would have been on it the first time it happened! But anyway, call customer service 800-922-0204 or *611 from your cell phone, and let them know that your voicemail is glitchy. It may be a simple fix.
You can also use YouMail - free - and bypass Verizon's VM service altogether.

  • Why won't my keyboard make the clicking noise?? The dial pad doesn't do it either.

For some reason the clicking wont make a sound!! Help!!

  • IPhone 5 voice call quality fade in and out. Noise Cancellation interference?

I've been having this huge problem with the iPhone5. The evidence i've collected seems to indicate this is a problem with all iPhone5's.
On calls in certain places both indoors and outdoors, the callers voices over the iPhone5 fade in and out. Their voices occasionally completely fade completely away, and only come back momentarily. The low volume for 50% of the time forces me to raise the volume, but raising the volume does not help because when the voice does come back, the volume is too loud for my ears.
I went back to the Apple store and they are not able to help me. They suggested a clean restore, which I did. They offered to replace the phone, which I did, but it is the same problem.
    - iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 4S, the fading does not occur. I make the call to the same voice mail system I have, and the sounds from the other side are consistently the same volume for the 4S, but fades in and out for the 5.
    - I connected up a 8mm jack between my iPhone 5 and my mac in an attempt to record this problem. In that instance, the sounds from the voice mail DO NOT fade in and out. I did find out that the dynamic range on the iPhone 5 is MUCH greater than that of the iPhone 4S, for some strange reason.
    - When I hold the phone up to my ear, the fading in and out does occur, but it is less noticeable. But it's still there.
    - When I leave my work area the problem goes away. However, because the iPhone 4S on the same AT&T service does not have this problem, this leads me to believe it's NOT a lack of transmission power from the AT&T cell tower. Rather, it is a reception issue at the iPhone5 side.
    - I turned off LTE, data and then made the calls. Same issue.
I use this phone to make 60 minute calls for conference calls frequently. I cannot use it. Please advise. I am seriously considering returning this phone. Except i've sold my old iPhone 4 already. I'm in a bad place. Please help.
Here's another post of a fellow with the same exact problem.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1456404
Apple, please look into this. I believe this is a problem with the noise cancellation software.

I've got an update on this problem with fading volume. I've isolated it to the set volume on the phone for voice calls when using headphones. When the headphone volume is set between 1 and 6 (out of 16 squares) the callers volume will consistently fade in and out. The fading which is normal to zero volume at 2-5 Hz is serious enough that normal conversation is impossible.  When the volume is raised above 6/16 then the callers voice stabilize and I can hear all their words again. Unfortunately, at 6/16 volume their voices are too loud for the headphones.
Furthermore, when headphones are plugged in, and I initial a call after the iphone5 was idle for several minutes, the first dial tone has preceded by a very loud pop an the tone, as though there was too much pressure (charge) that was dissipated all at once.
    Other details:
    - I used 3 different earphones, iPhone 4 headphones, altec earphones, an the new iPhone 5 earbuds. Same.
    - I turned on and off lte, data, Bluetooth, wifi. Problem persists unaffected.
    - when switching to iPhones earpiece and mic, the fading is gone.
    - I have 3 out of 5 bars where I teste this, in the city outside and on hwy 5 in central California. Same symptoms in all places I've tested.
    - I have exchanged my phone at the apple store. Same issue with both iPhones an I suspect all ipjone5s.
    - the ipjone4s does NOT have this problem when the volume is set lower. I can tell that the iPhone 5 must have a new audio filter to make the sounds have larger dynamic range. I liked the 4s better, because it is easier on the ears!

  • ITunes downloads at full connection-speed but pushing my harddrive (which makes disconcerting noise)

    HI,
I run windows7 and iTunes 10 and started to download an e-book of 499 MB on my desktop PC.
Within iTunes it downloads at full speed my internet connection can handle (1.2MB/s). However I hear my harddisk making disconcerning burst/readwrite noises..Lots of small files are read-written in bursts continuously during download. What is this and why does iTunes behave this way?
I know it must be small chunks of the e-book written to disk because my AV realtime-scanner shows it is scanning away 100-200 files each second while iTunes is downloading the e-book. Until I stop the download ofcourse.
    Surely this is not acceptable?
It worries me if I were to download larger and more files this way it could shorten my harddisk life. This is only my first download on my desktop pc using iTunes. Because iPhone doesnt allow larger downloads than 50MB unless I use wi-fi. I don't know if I should continue. Only 175 MB has been downloaded.

    BDAqua,
Thanks for your response, and sorry for the huge delay in getting back here. Not enough hours in the day, for sure.
I also wanted to use the machine for awhile after making your suggested changes. The good thing is that the problem of losing the connection to the router after waking from sleep seems to generally be gone. The connection is still lost upon waking, but recaptured after a few seconds. This computer worked fine for a couple of years with no changes, and things are different now, though I didn't change them. It's still a problem, but livable.
As far as the speeds go, I ran four DSL speed tests from different websites. They showed what I suspected: download speeds less than dial-up, about 6 to 12kbps. Interestingly, the upload seems to be about right, running in the range of 250 kbps.
To insure that this was a G4 problem, and not router or modem, I ran the same speed tests on the Macbooks, connected to the router by ethernet. (#1: 2.0Ghz, 1.5 GB, 10.4.11 #2: 2.4GHz, 4 GB, 10.5.4). The tests showed download speeds of 1250-1270 kbps, and upload about 300 kbps. So, this is certainly a G4 issue on download only.
Any more thoughts, BD, or anyone else? Thank you!!

  • Direct Outward Dial on CME 3.1

I am at a complete loss. Cisco want 800 USD to help me.
I need to setup Direct Outward Dial on my CME 3.1 (3725). I need to have one of my two POTS lines show up on the telephones mapped to a button.
I have searched for quite a while, and tried most everything I can think of. I have failed.
    Any help is appreciated!

It is not clear to me what you are trying to accomplish, but it sounds like a scenerio I deploy on a regular basis.
If you want to force a particular DN to use a specific analog fxo line for outbound calls, simply create a translation pattern and apply it to the ephone-dn. Basically, you will be prepending a '1#' to the dialed phone number and have a specific dial-peer matching 1# using the fxo voice port as a destination. For example:
    translation-rule 1
    Rule 0 ^.* 1#
    translation-rule 2
    Rule 0 ^.* 2#
    dial-peer voice 100 pots
    destination-pattern 1#0
    port 1/0/0
    forward-digits 1
    dial-peer voice 101 pots
    destination-pattern 1#1..........
    port 1/0/0
    forward-digits 11
    dial-peer voice 102 pots
    destination-pattern 1#[2-9]......
    port 1/0/0
    forward-digits 7
    dial-peer voice 103 pots
    destination-pattern 1#[4,9]11
    port 1/0/0
    forward-digits 3
    dial-peer voice 200 pots
    destination-pattern 2#0
    port 1/0/1
    forward-digits 1
    dial-peer voice 201 pots
    destination-pattern 2#1..........
    fax rate disable
    port 1/0/1
    forward-digits 11
    dial-peer voice 202 pots
    destination-pattern 2#[2-9]......
    port 1/0/1
    forward-digits 7
    dial-peer voice 203 pots
    destination-pattern 2#[4,9]11
    port 1/0/1
    forward-digits 3
    ephone-dn 1
    number 1001
    label Line 1
    description 555-1212
    name Line 1
    call-forward busy 7000
    call-forward noan 7000 timeout 15
    translate called 1
    hold-alert 120 idle
    ephone-dn 2
    number 1002
    label Line 2
    description 555-1213
    name Line 2
    call-forward busy 7000
    call-forward noan 7000 timeout 15
    translate called 2
    hold-alert 120 shared
In addition, when you do this you usually want to do the same in reverse: a specific fxo port to ring a specific line when an inbound call comes in, you do this with the connection plar-opx command on the fxo voice port, for example:
    voice-port 1/0/0
    input gain 10
    no comfort-noise
    connection plar opx 1001
    caller-id enable type 1
    voice-port 1/0/1
    input gain 10
    no comfort-noise
    connection plar opx 1002
    caller-id enable type 1
Let me know if I'm on the right track...
    /Rick
