Dialup crawling after attempting to setup LAN

We live in a rural area where we can not yet get high speed (except Hughes...too expensive--Wild Blue sold out of bandwidth--no one close enough for wireless yet). My dialup worked fine on my Mac until I attempted to setup a mixed Mac/PC 'network' by just connecting the Mac to the PC via the respective ethernet cards using Cat5e (still have not gotten that to work-Help?). Anyway, after messing with the ethernet and dialup settings on the Mac, my dialup (no, I'm NOT sharing the dialup connectioin)on the Mac is now really, really slow. The speed on the PC is normal. The computers both have their own phone jacks. Anyone know why the internet speed on the Mac changed?
Thanks,
Don

  • No login after attempting to setup atuomatic login

I recently tried to configure automatic login on a machine running the latest x86 version of archlinux following the directions here:
    http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … th-systemd
Now, all I get is a line that says:
    /dev/sda1: clean 45194/101098 files 329567/443117 blocks
    nothing else.
If I hit ctrl-alt-delete then it goes through the reboot.  Switching to a console just gives me a blinking prompt.  What did I do wrong and how do I fix it?

I was trying to undo what I did and not have to reinstall.
Are you referring to post #4 ?
That did not mean to reinstall. Using a livemedia(CD/USB) and chroot you can "enter" your current installation and undo your change (e.g. remove the symlink you created by the "ln ..." command).
Alternatively you may be able to use the rescue.target to "enter" your install, by appending the respective option to your kernel boot line. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/sy … _boot_into.

    Hi,
iTunes is no longer syncing my iPhoto library to my iPhone 4. Everything was syncing fine when I first got the phone, but, over the past week or so, it's stopped syncing photos.
Now, after attempting to start from scratch by deleting all the photos on my iPhone, iTunes won't sync ANY photos from iPhoto back to my iPhone. I've restarted my phone, computer, etc., force quit all photo-related apps on my iPhone, and tried various combinations of turning iTunes' photo syncing on/off, switching photo sync folders, etc., all to no avail -- I can't get my iPhoto library back on to my iPhone no matter what I do.
Anyone encounter a similar situation? (I've already sent feedback to Apple.) Thanks in advance.

After attempting to update to ios 7, my iphone is stuck in recovery mode and will not connect to the itunes software server.  I have already tried the resetting with power swich and home button and plugging into computer but it says the "iPhone software update server cannot be contacted."  I am locked out of my phone.  Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this issue and get the phone working again.  I will add that I am now trying to restore it on a different computer with a lower version of itunes, but the computer that it initially happened on had the updated itunes and gave me the same result ... nothing.  Thanks for your help in advance.

Try going to recovery mode as described here.  You may have to try this more than once to succeed.
Use the original iTunes that the iPhone synced with.

  • After installation, the mobo LAN port is not working? urgent, help ple

I just installed archlinux on my new i7 860 Asus p7p55d-e Deluxe build, but after the installation the LAN port is not working anymore. Before this, this Lan port works perfect in windows as well as in the arch installation. But after the installation, the led is orange and is blinking slowly, windows complains that the cable is not properly plugged, and even arch installation can't pull DHCP from it also.
Luckily, the mobo has another lan port, so I have to plug the cable out and to the second port, but I couldn't seem to be able to find anyway to enable the first Lan port anymore?
Have you seen anything like this, what possibly is the reason?
Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

heleos, thanks for the reply, the first thing I check is BIOS. There is definitely nothing wrong with that, since I loaded the default one.
It is really strange, it seems no matter what I do, the 1st port which used to work, simple doesn't work, but the second one works fine.
But after some poking around with the "ethtool", it starts to work again. I have no idea what cause the disfunction and what magically heal it again.
    Now I am really curious.

  • Mac Pro 2006 won't boot after attempted cpu swap, Mac Pro 2006 won't boot after attempted cpu swap

I just picked up a used Mac Pro 1,1 (2006).  It has 2x2.0 GHz dual-core processors and 5GB of RAM with the 7300GT card.
In this configuration, the machine was running perfectly.  I, of course, wanted to upgrade....
I ordered a pair of 5160 3.0GHz processors cheaply and followed a video tutorial to install them.  I used Arctic Cleaner and Arctic Silver 5 for the thermal paste.
Bottom line is:  I installed the two new processors and when I fired it up, I could hear the fans, optical drive and hard drives all spinning (normal fan speed - NOT "jet mode", and the HD sounds like it's spinning - NOT like it's booting).  NO boot chime and NO display.  I popped the cover off and saw the CPU B FAIL light on.  I swapped CPUs to test the processor, expecting to see the CPU A FAIL light come on.  It did not. It just powered the fans/drives with no result (again, with no boot chime and no display).
To make a long and frustrating story short, I wound up putting one of the original 2.0GHz processors in slot A, leaving B empty (maybe I damaged the socket?) and IT STILL WILL NOT BOOT.  I have tried all of my processors - the original 2.0GHz and the new 3.0GHz ones - with the same result.  There are NO symtoms or indications - no error LEDs, no beeps - no indication why this machine will not boot.
I have reset the SMC, pulled (and replaced) the coin battery, and left it unplugged for over an hour.  I have re-seated everything I can think of.
As of rigt now, I can hear the fans quietly humming with the optical drive making a quiet "click" sound as it seeks for a disk to read, and I can hear the faint chatter of the HD head.  The power LED is nice and bright (no flashes or pulses), and there are no red LEDs on inside the case.  The memory LEDs flash once during bootup and that's it (it's the RAM the machine came with).  Pressing the DIAG LED button tells me the machine has power (green LED), has trickle (yellow LED) and the GPU light flashes green.
Of note, during the swap, I got a tiny bit of thermal paste (non conductive) on the contacts of my 2.0 CPUs - which I cleaned off with alcohol and let dry.  The gold contacts all appear to be good on the original processors.  I can't really see the tiny little pins in the CPU sockets (my eyes are not as young as they used to be!), but the "look" like they're all there.
I'm going to leave this unplugged overnight, but does anyone have any ideas??  If I managed to somehow destroy ALL of the CPUs, wouldn't I get a warning LED or beep or something?  Ideas are welcome, as I cannot afford to replace this machine - it has to get me the rest of the way through college.
    thanks
    Richard

    Hello Grant
    >
Hardware sets the fans to maximum, and only properly-operating software resets them to "normal levels. If you have fans at normal levels, some software is running.
    >
That's what I was thinking, but I'm not even getting the startup chime, and the HD sounds like it's powered on but not doing anything.
EDITED TO ASK:  what software could be running at this point?  Nothing has loaded from the HD, that much I know...
    >Do you still have CPU A or CPU B failure lights?
No.  I have just one original processor installed in the CPU A socket.  No lights of any kind.  (Even if I install an original processor in CPU B, I still occasionall will get a CPU B FAIL light, so I'm thinking I damaged the socket somehow...the light will not be consistent, but it's always the CPU B FAIL light - the light only turns on some of the time (and stays on once lit) - so that's why I pulled the B processor and am simply trying to boot with A alone)
    >Do you have a flashing power on light, indicating failed or no memory?
Again, no.  I can "make" the light flash by removing the memory riser, but when I re-install the riser, the light stops blinking (with power off during removal/install, of course!)
    >Have you done the more severe SMC reset with the reset button OR:
    unplug AC power.
Yes.  I have used the SMC reset button 3 or 4 times.  I unplugged the machine and left it (with coin battery installed) for an hour.  The last thing I did last night was that I left it unplugged overnight (with coin battery removed).  I have yet to attempt a power on this morning.  I will do so and report back.
    >
    unplug AC power.
Press and hold power-on for a quarter minute to drain the power capacitors.
    Re-plug AC power.
    wait a quarter minute.
    then power on.
    >
Haven't done that one yet.  (Didnt know about it!).  Will try that second today, after attempting the initial boot up after leaving it unplugged all night.  (fingers crossed)  Of course, the capacitors are likely discharged now after being unplugged and battery-less all night, but you never know...
    >Many things have to get synchronized after a CPU swap. It may take a half-dozen reset attempts before everything lines up again and goes.
Thanks for the hope.   I will keep trying.
    >
I recommmend you remove ALL distractions: all drives, all graphics cards, all PCI cards, all USB devices -- until you get the chime nothing else matters.
Already have done so.  Last night I was down to 1 original CPU (CPU A), one memory riser with 1 set of original 1GB DIMMS, 1 bootable HD and nothing else (not even a keyboard/mouse - literally NOTHING else).   Will keep trying in this configuration.  All I really wanted last night was to hear the "bong" at power on!
Will do a bit more troubleshooting today and will report back.
    Thank you!

  • I am unable to update/restore my iPhone on my MacBook after attempting to downgrade iTunes 10 to iTunes 9.2

I am unable to update/restore my iPhone on my MacBook after attempting to downgrade iTunes 10 to iTunes 9.2. I am currently running iTunes 10 on my MacBook right now because it was my only option to get iTunes back on my MacBook. Everything is fine with syncing my device but the only problem I keep encountering is the restoring and updating options. When I restore my device it tells me that It could not be restored at this time. When I update it, iTunes tells me that it cannot complete the current build. I know for a fact I am missing some files that were deleted when I attempted the downgrade. Anybody know what files I am currently missing that is causing this?

  • HT1926 I keep getting the following message after attempting to download and install the latest update for iTunes: missing MSVCR80.dll.  error 7 (windows error 126)

I keep getting the following message after attempting to download and install the latest update for iTunes: missing MSVCR80.dll.  error 7 (windows error 126). Anyone else having this issue? How do I get iTunes back in working order?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • After standby no 1Gbit Lan

    Hello,
    I use a T500 5253 with a Intel 82567LM Gigabit network adapter.
After standby, I loose the gigabit connection to the router. You have to deactivate and activate the adapter again, otherwise it will be fixed at 100 Mbit/s. The driver built-in diag method fails and return only "100 Mbit possible" after a standby.
    LAN driver version: 10.1.17.0
    Intel ProSet version 18.2.63.0
the energy settings are on maximum, the network card is not allowed to reduce speed for energy saving.
    Does a work around exists?
    Thinkpad T500 2082-52g
    HDD changed into SAMSUNG HM500LI
    Microsoft Windows 6.1 Built 7600 - Windows 7

I would begin by updating your version of OS X to 10.7.4, if you have not done so already, according to your profile.  That indeed may solve it.
    Hope this helps
