Dick Not Ejected Properly Message

I have an older WD Passport External Hard Drive. I finally got a new cable so that I can use it with my MacBook Air (Yosemite). When I plugged the external hard drive into my Air for the first time the "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message popped up, again and again. The hard drive doesn't show up under Devices in the Finder. Am I totally screwed?

I re-used a WD-enclosure drive but "outside of" the enclosure.  Finder always asked me to initialize it because it appeared flawed.  When I reformatted using DiskUtility it was fine, but the control card in the WD enclosure apparently did something "proprietary" that does not translate well outside of the original enclosure.
There were issues in Mavericks with OSX finding age-old drive utilities in external WD drives.  These utilities had not been updated and sometimes (too often) triggered a reformat without any manual request.  Could be a non-destructive but still incompatible issue occurring.
Do you intend to access the data in the older drive, or start fresh with reformat?  Windows/pre-Yosemite machines may still read the data to temporarily save files for transfer back to the drive after putting in a new (non-proprietary) enclosure.  EXFat,is a format that both Mac and PC can read/write.

  • Since installing OS 10.8 keep getting "This disk was not ejected properly" messages. Why?

Since I installed Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) on my Mac Book Pro (early 2011), I keep getting "This disk was not ejected properly" messages. No yet sure what I do preceeding this occurence. Anyone else have this problem?

I am one of those who had experienced this kind of problem.  My former Time Machine disk used to automatically eject itself when my iMac sleeps, hence upon waking up my iMac. i always get the error message that the disk was not properly ejected.
From what I was able to gather from my experience, until the time that I found a workable solution, I think I can say that the problem is most probably caused by the incompatibility of certain external drives with how the iMac operates when on sleep and upon waking up.  Some external drives are just not able to cope with how the iMac tries to remount a connected disk after it wakes up from sleep.  There are just some external drives that cannot continue to be mounted after the iMac wakes from sleep.  There are just some external drives that are not responsive enough. In other words, the existence of the problem lies with the type of external drive you are using.
My former Time Machine disk, the problematic one, was an Imation M300 Apollo 1 TB external disk.  It unmounts everytime my iMac went to sleep, but does not remount after waking up the iMac.  The disk will continue to be unmounted until I physically remove its USB connector and replug it in the iMac.
I replaced my former Time Machine disk with my current one, a Transcend Storejet 1 TB.  And the problem went away.  The Transcend disk continue to be mounted after the iMac is woken up even from the longest of sleep.  I have even the energy saving option "put the hard disk to sleep..." checked.  The Transcend disk comes with a Y cable, i.e. it has two USB connectors, but I only connect the one for both data and power--and it still remains mounted even after waking the iMac from sleep.
The sad realization, however, is that since there are only some external drives that are not able to work with the iMac, no matter how many those some may seem to be, it will be highly unlikely for Apple to itself fix this kind of a problem.
I, therefore, make the following recommendations:
    1.  Check first if your problematic disk has a firmware upgrade available.  In some cases, the firmware upgrade may be enough to make the disk more responsive to the iMac waking up.
    2.  If there is no firmware upgrade available, check if your power/data USB cable is properly working.
    3.  If your power/data USB cable is in order, and the problem still persists, I think it is inevitable that you have to replace the problematic disk with a newer one that could respond well with the iMac's wake/sleep operation.  With what disk will you replace your problematic one?  I can only recommend from my personal experience the Transcend disk I mentioned earlier.  You may also search this forum on other brands of disks that may also work.

  • How do I stop " disk was not ejected properly" message from showing

My phone's jack isn't that great, and always seems to unplug and plug itself back in causing the " disk was not ejected properly" message to constantly show up. During movies this can become quite annoying, making it exit full screen mode.
Is there any way to prevent this message from coming up so that I do not have to constantly deal with it?
    Thanks guys!

I got a new iMac in January 2011. I properly ejected my external hard drive and got the same message. I plugged it back in and ejected it again. Nothing works. I keep getting the same error message every few minutes and it's driving me nuts. I have no loose connections. Everything else works. Does anyone have a solution for getting this to stop?

  • My iMac is disconnecting all my media hard drives and giving "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message since updating to OSX 10.9

Ever since I updated to OSX version 10.9 on my iMac, it is disconnecting all of my media hard drives and giving me the message: "Disk Not Ejected Properly." My hard drives are connected to my iMac through a Nitro Professional 8-port Firewire 800 hub/repeater, and a Firewire 800 cable from the Nitro hub connects to the back of my iMac. This configuration has been working fine for over a year. Suddenly, and immediately after performing the update about a week ago, the drives won't stay connected for more than a few seconds before the iMac disconnects from my drives. I've tried restarting and reconnecting many times and the same thing keeps happening.
I have a new MacBook Pro (one month old) that I've been using temporarily to work with my photos and video on these drives as the drives are able to stay connected to this computer—I put a Thunderbolt adapter onto the Firewire 800 cable to connect to it. Luckily I had not yet updated it to the new operating system and I am afraid to do that. I've had the persistent message that Updates are available for my computer on my MacBook but I will not perform any updates for fear that I will lose access to my media drives. I am a professional photographer, so it's pretty disasterous if I can't access my drives. Please advise me what to do to keep my hard discs connected to my iMac and what to do to keep this from happening with my MacBook.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge and assistance!

  • Disc not ejected properly message...

Can anyone help, since updating OSX from Lion to Maverick on my MacBook now i cant open files on my CF card thats connected via a USB 3.0 Kingston Card Reader. Wether i try to open in Adobe Camera Raw, Canon DPP or just Finder i get the same result where i get a message saying 'Disc not ejected properly'. It then ejects and remounts the card continuously! My SD slot in the Macbook works fine for the record. Ive googled this issue and it seems others have previously had this issue when upgrading to earlier OSX versions. However there are no fixes as far as i can see.
I cant even upgrade the Card Readers firmware as it is a Windows download only! Im now wondering if i will have other problems with USB devices such as my Wacom Tablet.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Phil

I have the same problem with my retina pro 15. Since a downloaded Maverick Os X 10.9 I can't read my photos with the CF reader. The sistem shows the mesage Disc Not Ejected Properly.
I'm very concern about this because I can't work my photos.

  • The disk was not ejected properly message

Ever since I started using Mountain Lion, I have been getting a pop-up message "The disk was not ejected properly".  I get this frequently, click the OK button on and continue.  I do not know what disk it is referring to (I have several USB-connected storage devices) and all seem to be working and accessible.  This occurs randomly while I am using the computer and I have not hit any "eject" button or touched any part of my iMac other than the keyboard and touchpad.
This is annoying and I do not know which disk it is referring to, nor how to correct the problem.

I'm having the same issue described here. I'm using a MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011 edition) with a Western Digital My Passport 1 TB drive. I first experienced it with a USB3 capable model. After seeing this error occur, I was able to get the drive replaced by Western Digital, thinking it was a fault with the drive. Well, the replacement arrived today and I plugged it in and started a new Time Capsule backup to it and within a few minutes got the same message.
So I'm starting to think this is an OS issue.

  • "Disk not ejected properly" message after Maverick update

    Hi there,
After uprgrading to Maverick OS, i keep getting the message "Disk Not Ejected Properly" after booting my iMac. If i close the message, ejects the external disk, which dissapeears from Finder. After few seconds message pops-up again, with my disk appearing in Finder but unable to access it.
Nothing seems to solve it. Restart, shut down, change of USB port ...
This only happened after first time of booting Maverick update ...
Any idea what i should do ? Is this a bug ?
    Regards,
    Simion

This is happening to me but not after reboot it just happens randomly for no reason. I have tried repairing permissions nothing showed regarding usb, verified the HD came back ok, verified the external having the issues no problems found.
Mine is a 2TB seagate desktop external usb2 connection and powered.
This for me doesn't happen under either 10.8.5 or 10.7.5 which I have on two other external HD's for testing purposes.
It only started since installing Mavericks via clean install
It can happen for me after boot up and after the desktop has been showing for any amount of time and then it just happens again and again out of the blue without any warning of any kind.
Hopefully a fix comes along soon as it is quite annoying

  • Logic pro 9 keeps crashing. I get a "disc not ejected properly" message among other error messages. I can't even force quit. It makes me do the hard shutdown. Any ideas? Same problem with both external hard drives

Getting lots of crazy error messages pertaining to the external hard drives. This problem is bad. Usually can't run the software very long at all before it crashes. Logic version 9.1.8 running on OS 10.7.5 on a Macbook Pro

Such an error is being reported by OS X (nothing to do with Logic) and indicates that your Mac and your external drives are losing connection for some reason... There are some external drives that will incorrectly 'go to sleep' without reporting it to OS X which then thinks the drives have been unplugged without ejecting, hence the msg.
Also, you could have a flaky physical connection somewhere.. so check ports and cables....
So... to troubleshoot.. try the following...
Save and place a small text file on each of the drives.. Open both text files in textedit..  and keep them open (You can minimize textedit ) Now, see if you still get that problem.. when the files are kept open.
If you do not get this problem.. then the likelohood is it will be the HDs 'going to sleep' without proper reporting to OS X.. so check for a firmware update from the HD's manufacturer.. that will stop this from happening.
If they still disconnect, its more likely it is a physical ports and cable issue.

  • Can the "The disk was not ejected properly" Message Be Disabled?

Such as when a USB stick is removed with out being "ejected".

When any device/volume is disconnected/removed from the system physically before being unmounted, that warning will be triggered. There are other circumstances that can trigger that alert as well.
In routine use, following the proper sequence is the user's job and starts by either using the Finder, Disk Utility or the command line/terminal to get the job done.
As pointed out, the typical process is to select the device, then bring up the menu to 'eject'. If there is an application or service that has open files related to the device, you will then see a message with that information.
Forcing a dismount/eject will risk file structure damage and that process isn't encouraged. Disabling the warning isn't simple, if doable at all, sorry.

  • "disk not ejected properly" but is still mounted on desktop?

    Hi,
I get a "The disk was not ejected properly" message, yet if I go to the Finder's desktop the drive is still mounted and accessible and read/write works fine.
I've witnessed it happen once while viewing the desktop. The drive disappears momentarily for about 1.5 - 2 seconds, then shows up again. So It DOES eject, but it instantly re-mounts, and I mean in under 2 seconds and I've neder experienced a drive intentioanlly unmount/remount this fast in my life. It does happen more often when waking from sleep, but not only in that instance.
Been having this bug since OS X Lion and on to the current version of Marveicks. I am posting this under Mavericks because it's not hardware specific to anything other than USB and LaCie. I am experiencing it on multiple machines, different models, with different external LaCie drives of differing types, with different USB cables. This does not only happen when waking from sleep (as most threads seem to indicate), it sometimes happens for no reason.
    The common factors:
All the external drives are LaCie drives (though vastly different models).
Both affected Macs are 2012+ models with Thunderbolt interphases and USB 3 ports (am using USB ports for USB drives, no Thunderbolt adaptors).
I could suspect LaCie, but since it's new since Lion... well you get the picture. Something leads me to suspect a bug in OS X USB protocol, possibly on software, maybe even in firmware. Might be linked to energy saving. I have "sleep drives when possible" enabled, and though it might help to turn that off (I haven't tested yet) I just don't feel I should need to, I want unused drives to spin down and save energy.

    Hello there The Heftster,
It sounds like your external drives are periodically disconnecting on their own from the computer causing the prompt saying that the drive was not ejected properly. I would start by resetting the PRAM on your computer with this article:
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14222
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
As well as the SMC on your computer:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Disk not ejected properly notification after upgrade

    Hi,
I have a 500GB Western Digital external drive configured for Time Machine. I recently upgraded to Mavericks, now when my computer goes to sleep I get the dreaded "Disk was not ejected properly" message. With Mountain Lion I have experienced this issue when my macbook pro goes to sleep when running a vm in Parallels, but never at any other time.
It wouldn't really be a big deal, but I am connected to a thunderbolt display and when I wake the computer up, I have to unplug the thunderbolt cable and plug it back it in to get my thunderbolt display to turn back on. This is a real pain!
Not sure if this is a bug or configuration issue. Perhaps I might need a third party app like Jettison.
    Please help.

Thanks for the info. I reset the SMC and my mbp starting acting very funky. I started experiencing some odd behaviour with my internet connection, so I shutdown my mbp and left it off for at least a minute. When I rebooted I was able to connect wirelessly and hit the sites I could not before.
All good; however, I noticed that my external drive was showing as a usb device and not Time Machine drive. I selected the external drive from the Time Machine prefrences and now all seems to be working fine.
I think this was the actual issue I was experiencing after upgrading. I don't think the SMC reset was necessary in this case, but I gave it a shot because I had noticed the symptom of fans running frequently when there is minimal load and proper ventilation.
    Thanks.

  • Waking iMac has The disk was not ejected properly. I have OS 10.8.5 using My Book Thunderbolt Duo external HD.

Waking iMac, since last OS10.8.5 update, gives "The disk was not ejected properly" message.  Western Digital sent a replacement drive to find out the problem doesn't go away. I have tried Option, Command, R and P at start up. This doesn't help. Anything else I might try to rectify the situation?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, it has to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Ever since upgrading to Lion I keep getting the error message "disk was not ejected properly."

Ever since upgrading to Lion on my iMac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo, I keep getting the error message "disk was not ejected properly."  I have repaired permissions and reformatted my external LaCie 2TB USB hard disk, but the error continues.  I use this disk for my Time Machine backups.  This always seems to happen when the computer wakes from sleep, but not consistently.  The computer was asleep overnight and backed up as soon as it awakend this morning.  Two hours later I get the improper ejection message.  I have used the same external disk with Snow Leopard (all versions), but never had this error message or problem.  This disk has been in use without any problems since February, 2011. Upgrading to Lion is when this problem began. This is the below message (but from online image from Snow Leopard, but Lion message is essentially the same).

I had a similar issue. Mine was with a Seagate GoFlex drive. The solution was to install GoFlex for Mac 1.1.2 which included a 64-bit driver to disable the drives built in sleep timer:

I'm getting a "Disk Not Ejected Properly  Eject “FreeAgent GoFlex Drive” before disconnecting or turning it…" message at random times.  I have seen other comments about this happening after the iMac wakes from sleep.  However, this is happening to me throughout the day even when I am working on the iMac.
The iMac is up to date with OS X Version 10.9.  I had recently switched from a 500GB to a 3TB Drive, both are Seagate.  I have never had this issue prior to the switch.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I verified/repaired in the Utility Disk and a message popped up indicating the GoFlex looks "OK".

No, I am not on the USB3 interface.  I contacted Seagate and they indicated that there is no known issue with OS X 10.9.  In my case, they are willing to send me a new Drive, since I just received the GoFlex on 12/06. Will post an update when I install the new one.  Hopefully this will solve my issue.
I suggest you contact Seagate, if you haven't already, directly.  The representatives are very helpful.  Good luck.
