Dictation doesn't work

I activated dication in the preferences and when I double press the Fn key twice the microphone pops up and makes a tinkle. When I say something I can see the sound meter responding to my voice but nothing else happens. Eventually it shuts down of its own accord unless I click done but nothing I say gets typed out.
Whats going on and how do I fix this?

    Enahnced dictation doesn't work.
I've downlaoded and installed the files.
Press Fn twice lanches the mic, which blinks according to my voice.
When I press Fn to end the dication, no text is keyed-in.
However, normal dictation —i.e. done remotely by Apple— works fine.
I've tried the solution mentionned in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/message/23513414#23513414, to no avail.
    I've opened a bug ticket at http://bugreport.apple.com
    Any solution?

I had this problem too (and it may come up again...)
    1. Just toggling off dictation and enhanced dictation and then toggling on again worked, no restart required.
    so that was easy enough
    2. I had Speakable Items on and wondered if they were conflicting as every time I hit the dictation key the speakable items badge appears. But I tested with Speakable Items off and on and Enhanced Dictation still worked.
Now I'm trying to compensate my manner of speaking to the way I write!

  • Dictation doesn't work for one language

My iPhone 5 was upgraded to 8.02 and then 8.1
I already installed Brazilian Portuguese keyboard
When I try to dictate a tst in other languages, like English, Italian, Spanish, etc I can see the mic
But when I turn to Brazilian Portuguese, the Mic doesn't appear
And I know this language is already available because many friends of mine are already enjoying this feature using their iPhone5.

  • You can't open Dictation & Speech preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac.

I cannot open or use Dictation & Speech in System Preferences. When I try to open it I get the error:
"You can’t open Dictation & Speech preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
I have tried repairing the disk from the installation CD and repairing the permissions and I have also tried re-installing Mountain Lion but the feature still does not work. Any ideas?

Open Finder, press Option key and select Go > Library. Open Preferences and delete com.apple.systempreferences.plist. If you can't open, do a backup, format and install

There are many, many threads on this forum about this issue. Do a forum search for "wi-fi greyed out" and see if any of the solutions therein will work for you. Best of luck.

  • Preference panes - cannot open because it doesn't work on an intel-based mac.

Just updated to Mavericks and was checking out "System Preferences". Of the 37 items I have here 19 will not open. The error messages I get are alternately:
"Could not load <....> preference pane"
"You can’t open <....> preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
(<....> = name of preference pane)
Clicking on a pane will give one message, then, once "OK" has been clicked, clicking again on the same pane will give the second. There does not seem to be any correlation between when a particular message will occur, but it is always the same panes with the issue.

Show invisible files and go to /Applications - you will see a bunch of corrupt application starting with .0
    For example i had

The wrong System Preferences was getting launched when calling it from the menu - the corrupt one.
I deleted them and all is good.
Also if this doesn't work, select Applications/System preferences and call Get Info from the File menu and make sure 32 bit mode is not activated.

  • Microphone doesn't work on speaker, or during calls.

    AT&T, OS 6, Iphone 4.
Microphoen doesn't work in phone calls, or speaker phone mode. Interestingly, it doesn't work either in my call when connected via blue tooth, where the microphone is actually part of the car's bluetooth system. Furthermore, the microphone works in Apps like Voice Memo Recorder, and Dragon Dictation.have a fix?
Has anyone experienced this? I have not "restored" the phone, yet as I am unsure of what I might lose and need to backup before doing so.
Thanks, in advance for your help!

Good point Tik on my Razr I had similar issues and I cured the issue by simply power cycling and as soon as my Razr came back on and settled I power cycled it again that what helped my little guy.. and make sure to check all your sound settings b33

  • Microphone doesn't work while recording video

Hi everyone. I have an iPhone 5, and yesterday while trying to make a Vine while using the front-facing/FaceTime camera, I discovered that it didn't pick up any sound. However if I switch to the main camera (the HD one on the back), audio picks up and can be heard. This is a problem when I'm recording regular video too. Microphone works with the back camera, doesn't work with the front. Is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks!

My iPhone 4S fails and works exactly the same every time:
FAILS, with the phone on speaker, or with the camera recording video (front or back) no sound is captured.
WORKS, in all other situations and apps that I could think of that use the microphone such as
google, Voice Memo, Dragon Dictation, Vonage Extensions, Skype, and taking the phone OFF speaker holding the phone to my ear.  And also select microphone key to voice input instead of typing whenever the keyboard is there (Mail, Notes, Reminders, Safari, Maps, google Maps, ...)
Based on that, my guess is it's not hardware.
I'm using a 4S (64GB) from Verizon. In the nearby Verizon store I was told to back it up, do a master reset (which wipes out the phone), and restore it from the backup.  I called Verizon support today before doing this and got exactly the same instructions.  That's what I did today and NOTHING GOT BETTER.
After reading several discussion boards I made sure that I was not blocking any of the holes (trying to be thorough). I do not use a cover.

  • Siri doesn't work still after the apple rep I spoke to said it would be back up this morning. anyone else have this problem too? and how can I fix it?

it has been 24 hours and  Siri still doesn't want to take any commands anyone else have this problem too? and how can I fix it? she just keeps saying there is something wrong and to try again later. I didn't buy this phone to be jipped on any features.

Mine wasnt working either but i saw in another thread that you should try Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. Ignore the warnings, all your settings have to be changed back but you dont lose any media or data, you just have to put your background back and location settings. It fixed Siri for me but dictation still doesnt work. Hopefully it works for you :-]

  • Dictation isn't working for me, how do I fix this?

Every time I double tap the fn key on my MBP Retina, it doesn't even prompt me with the mic on, it just shows up and doesn't do anything.. I've tried restarting my MBP, I tried shutting off dictation and then restarting and then enabling dictation and it still doesn't work. Someon help me out, I'm out of ideas.

    Did you do this yet?
Locate and delete the file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.plist(Finder’s Go and press and hold Alt option). Then restart your Mac, turn off Dictation (Apple > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, and then click Dictation) and reboot your Mac a second time and try again.
You're still on Mountain Lion, right?
And what apps are you trying to use it in?

  • Why does dictation almost never work?

The vast majority of the time I try to use dictation, it does not work at all. I double click the Fn button, and the microphone comes on. But usually it "maxes" out, or conversely, does not seem to register any sound at all.
Seriously, it happens probably 75% of the time. Then only occasionally it works fine.
If I restart the computer, it works again. But it would be nice if it could be dependably used. I'm not going to restart the computer when I'm in the middle of an email.
As a question b, I heard that dictation would learn your vocal patterns to improve it's performance, but does that require anything from the user? How does it correct itself? I never have the option of clarifying the words for it- I just erease them and correct them.
    I have a Mac Book Pro 10.8.2.
    Thanks!

Match frame works if you pay attention to the auto-select buttons. To match to an audio track, be sure that no video track is auto-selected. FCP will match to the lowest numbered audio track that is selected. (I hope I have this right - not in front of my system now).
About Find Bin. Yeah, it doesn't work well. If the clip in question was originally captured into another project, then brought into your current project, it will not work. This is a major pain for those like me that have an assistant load tapes in a separate "assistant project."
I make my living with FCP, but this, and a few other "features" really drive me nuts.

  • Mailing with SMTP doesn't work anymore, 10.6.2

    Hi all,
after reading so many posts regarding Mail and how sending emails doesn't work with 10.6.2, there still seems to be no solution that works for everyone.
After Updating to 10.6.2 I cannot send emails through ANY smtp server.
I also have a windows 7 machine running thunderbird and everything works there.
    I tried all suggested solutions,i.e.
1.) I checked connection doctor and everything seems to be fine (including the detailed messages)
2.) I tried all sort of settings, with, w/o SSL, all sorts of ports
    3.) I "reset" the keychain
4.) I "reset" Mail preferences by deleting com.apple.mail.plist in library\preferences
still, I can only receive emals but not send. any solutions are greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Hi - here is a bizarre solution (possible bug); I hadn't been able to ever send any with my 3 month old MacBookPro through Apple Mail 4.2, similar to what you say. That was under 10.6, 10.6.1 and 10.6.2. I was using my Win PC to send emails, or via Web clients in Safari off the MacBookPro, but finally I reached the time to call Orange UK, my ISP...
I have just had a great experience with their technical support, but the solution reached was NOT logical - let me explain it, perhaps it might work for you.
    The logical background is this:
Define an SMTP server; if you have Orange broadband, you HAVE to use theirs (as they block other servers form using the standard ports 25, 465 and 587 - apparently for SPAM reasons, or perhaps they are now required to keep an eye on everything... who knows.
So, in Apple Mail 4.2; we went to the menus, and Mail -> Preferences
highlight any account on the left, and at the bottom of the right hand pane, in the Account Information tab, click and define the SMTP server (click the box, choose Edit server, create an SMTP server - for Orange UK, I had to put in
    smtp.orangehome.co.uk
then ensure this is the only SMTP server Apple Mail uses, by checking the box in Account Information tab, Use only this server.
Go back into Advanced tab, and here is where the logic starts to end...
To recap: Mail -> Preferences -> Click on the Orange SMTP server button -> click "Edit SMTP server list..." (again) and go to the Advanced tab.
In this tab are two main choices:
    Use Default Ports (25,465,587)
Use Custom Port (by default this is a completely blank box)
Now, logic dictates that you would leave the 'use default ports' option checked, then try all other manner of parameter changes. But, we tried forcing 25 into Use Custom Port.
    Use Custom Port - 25
    but this too didn't work.
    Then I tried, for fun:
Use Custom Port - 587 (no SSL checked, and Authentication - none; again illogical as 587 should be an SSL port, as is 465)
And... suddenly my mail sent, for the first time ever!
mmm... When I looked again at this tab, though, the Use Custom Port box had reverted to saying...
Use Custom Port - 25 (???) but who cares, it worked. Why it didn't work the first time, I have no clue.
NB Between each try, I quit Apple Mail, deleted my test Outbox sending messages, and essentially made sure nothing was trying to be sent. This was between each 'attempt'. This might have been an important thing to do, but I don't know.
So, my best guess is to just try forcing the Custom Port to be 25, then 587... and keep trying. My emails still take about 5-10 secs to send, rather than almost immediately like they used to before I started with Orange Broadband (which I am, interestingly, finding to be a faster service than my previous ISP, and as yet, appears just as reliable...) It’s all so Weird! It’s the only thing that has really annoyed me with this my first Mac, so that’s good going!
    Good luck!

  • Mini-DVI to S-Video Adapter doesn't work

Hi, I am using the Mini-DVI to S-Video adapter from apple to connect my macbook to the TV. But the only thing I get is a grey flickering picture on my TV. When I click on the monitor-button I can see that my macbook detects only a monitor (but not a TV) in addition to the macbook-LCD-display. I tried all different resolutions, but needless to say it doesn't work.
Can the adapter be broken, or is there a problem with the macbook?
Macbook white 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

my macbook detects only a monitor (but not a TV) in addition to the macbook-LCD-display
If you connect the Mini-DVI to S-Video adapter, the monitor button on the menubar should show resolutions for Color LCD in one section and NTSC/PAL in the other.
A grey flickering picture is indicative of picking the wrong standard-PAL vs. NTSC.

  • DVI to Video adapter doesn´t work! HELP!

I bought a dvi to video adapter (RCA or SVideo) and I already tried on two diferent TVs and none of them worked? What should I do? Does it have a setup to do?

We really need some more details to be able to help with your situation.
Is the adapter an Apple one, or some other brand?
What model TVs do you have? Please be as specific with the model numbers as possible.
When you say it doesn't work, what exactly happens?
And finally: what kind of Mac do you have? You posted in the Mac Mini forum, but your signature says MacBook.
If it is a Mac Mini, did you set it up initially using a regular monitor first?
