Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

Does Dictation work with a bluetooth wireless microphone?

I am deaf. Dictation helps by allowing others to speak into the built in microphone on my iMac and then let me read what they said. It would be much easier if they could use a wireless microphone. So,1) does Dictation work with a wireless microphone, and 2) does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality wireless microphone that is compatible with an iMac 3.4 Intel Core i7?

It sould work just fine. You would have to go into system preferences/sound/input and make sure the wireless mic is the defult input. As far as a good wireles mic I have no recomendation. I would check and see if there are any on the Apple store. Hope that helps.

Unfortunately on these days I'm in a country that Apple don't have any retail store here and for sake of time I prefer to fix it myself to DHL it to the nearest country to use its warranty. Do you have any idea how can I fix it? Do you think it's a software issue?

Just bought an iMac. Updated to mountain lion yesterday. Wanted to try Dictation, but doesn't seem to work. Have tried rebooting, changing language preferences, region preferences etc etc. but still not working. Three blue dots appeared and then disappeared. Please help.

I think that the best thread that resolves this issue for most involves many options/suggestions. I tried the above and it didn't work for me, but changing or adding DNS numbers under 'Network' in sys. preferences seems to have worked for me. What a frustrating experience though! I have a few glitches and I think I'll eventually do a clean install and hope that this resolves the issue. I've already spend money on doubleing my RAM, which seems to have helped (but not for this issue) the beachball issue, and bought an 8GB thumb drive to create an install disk to do a clean install. Now I just fear that I'm going to lose many files/folders, even though I use time machine to back up, I'm not convinced that it's best to reinstall from this as I think it may recopy all the 3 year garbage I have and result in the same issues. Ugh. I sort of regret 'upgrading' to Mountain Lion now, but there are a lot of cool features. Hopefully more updates are coming soon that will resolve some of the multitude of issues that people are talking about here. Dictation is not working on my iMac, Please help!

I have had my Intel i5 iMac (27") for just over a week now, I've just recently found out that my Mac actually has built in dictation software from Apple pre-installed and I thought this was great, but it has randomley just decided that it no longer wants to do anything I tell it to type!
It could pick up what I was saying over 99% of the time only a few days ago, but now when I push the FN button twice to open the dictation tool, it "beeps" to tell me to start speaking, and for example, I'm in google and I say "Youtube" and it no longer does ANYTHING! It's the same story when i'm in TextEdit or any other program.
Could anyone help me to fix this problem?

Enhanced dictation does not work. I've tried everything. Any help?

Hello everybody. After downloading enhanced dictation (spanish-spain), the microphone seems to be Ok but no word is written. Regular online dictation works well. I use a mac-mini i7 16Gb and a micro connected to an external audio card firewire. I've tried to delete and download again several times, to clean the cache, turn on-off with resets,.. but nothing seems to fix the problem. Dictation is important for me to work and I'd like to try with enhanced dictation because I've read that it improves the performance with respect to online dictation.
I've empoyed such a lot of time looking for a solution in the support community and other forums but nothing worked.
Could anybody help me.

Ok, I reply to myself.
The problem was caused by the microphone and the firewire connection. Enhanced Dictation is not ready to work with my audio hardware (micro Shure and Presonus audio card via Firewire). Although this audio hardware works fine with other software and even with online dictation, when I use it with Enhanced Dictation, the system seems to be working (the micro bars of the microphone in the screen move ok) but no words are written at all.
The solution was to connect it analogically, using an audio connection between my audio card and the line-in connection of the mac mini (stereo).
Hope Apple will solve this problem. I guess many people probably are having the same problem, mainly people with pro audio cards. I hope that this will help them

Siri and Dictate cannot recognize the name Tibor - phonetics seem not to help

I cannot, for the life of me, get my phone to recognize the name Tibor when I dictate. It constantly comes out "keyboard." I have put a phonetic spelling in the contact (tried several variants of "tee boar," tea-bore," etc...) but it still hears "keyboard". Even spelling seems not to help as it cannot hear the difference between my "B" and "P". Any thoughts?

Help with Dragon Dictation

Great app but something has started to go wrong. In the middle of dictating into my iphone, it stops and automatically goes into "processing." I didnt press "done" or otherwise stop the dictation. Why does this happen and how can I get it stop processing until I press done?
Hope someone can help.

If you has spend half a day ion the phone talking to the very unhelpful people about dragon like I did, on multiple occasions you might understand my distaste for anything that comes from the company. There support is horrible and their attitude was that
I was a thief because their activation system did not work. The unfortunate thing was they already had my thousand dollars.
So have you tried what was originally suggested and turned dragon OFF and in actually closing it completely to see if it is the root cause. My guess is it is loading style sheets and overlaying Thunderbird's with it's own.
If you have complaints about the forum software, post then here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors I have spent a lot of time trying to get then to make this forum work and all I have to show are bruises from the wall I keep banging my head on.
My understanding of Dragoon is you start commands with a command word. Perhaps that is not working if it is triggering commands as you type.
Or you have focus issues. The only real command that is not prefixed by Alt or Ctrl is A for archive
I not your using a non default theme. Please try Thunderbird safe mode, hold the shift key while starting Thunderbird. Do you still see the issue in the default no add-ons no themes view?

Help! Microphone for dictation??

Help! I just updated to iOS 5 on my iPhone 3GS and for some reason I can't seem to find the "microphone" that is suppose to be beside the space bar in the messages or email for dictation? Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thank you!! =)

Dictation is a feature that comes only with SIRI and the new iphone 4S.

Inasmuch as the blue tooth keyboards have no "dictation key, will "dictation" work in conjunction with a wireless keyboard?

I also have admiration for Steve Jobs. I've been a Mac user since 1984.
Given that a wireless keyboard will not have the dictation key, there ought to be some way to work around this issue. All that is needed is some way to toggle between keyboard input and microphone input. Perhaps using AppleScript and/or a hot key, I can set up a voice command or define a hotkey to toggle between the 2 inputs.
