Dictation: iMac vs MBP

It's easy to dictate text on my iMac. However, with my MacBook Pro, I have different problem.
When I press "FN" twice, I only get a "beep," followed by the three purple dots - indicating the dictation isn't successful. This Dictation work on TextEdit, either. Interestingly, I can get Dictation to work while talking into Safari for web searches, and for Dictation during chat groups. Any hint what's going on?

I solved my own problem. I rebooted my MBP, and Dictation is working fine, now.

  • Can I download FCPX on my imac and MBP using the same apple ID?

Hello,  I am just wondering how it works with mac store apps.    I use both my imac and MBP for my work.   Will I have to re buy FCPX for both, or can I use it on both with the same apple id?   This works with apps on my 2 iphones and ipad, but I was not sure about imac and MBP.
Thank for any info you can give

Don't mention it. Although I'm one of those dispised Americans. Worse yet, I come here for four or five months then leave. Then I tell all our American friends awful lies about Canadians.

  • Can I sync my iMac and MBP in word processing?

Is it possible to sync an iMac and MBP when doing word processing? If so, how can it be done?
I know there are programs that can sync iCal bewteen the two such as BusyMac. Is there one that do the same thing with a word processor?
    Thanks.

If you keep you documents in the same folder on both units it is possible. I usually just pick up the folder and drag to the one that has the older files. This way the folders remain updated.
You can also use Mobile Me, something I do not have to much knowledge on.

  • How do I get all Photos from iMac to MBP

My iPhoto album has several hundred pictures in several albums.  While on the road, I'd like to put them on CD's or DVD's.  Right now they are all on my iMac and I'd like to move them over to my MBP which I have with me all of the time.  It makes more sense to be able to do the disc media on the road rather than at home.  Any suggestions how I can pair the iMac to the MBP in order to get the pictures onto the MBP would be an enormous help?

Join them with a Firewire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down T so it Boots into Target Disc mode, then it will appear on the MacBook Pro Desktop as a regular volume. Then just drag the iPhoto Library across from one to the other (this would replace any Library on the MBP so if you need that rename it first)

  • Can I use 3-5 TCs in my office to "decentralize" data for imac and MBP?

    Hi Apple Gang!
I recently switched from Windows to Mac and I am pretty happy with what I have seen so far. My newest baby is a 2TB Time Capsule, which works wonderfully so far.
Since I was used to work with only 1 PC in the past, I have lots of external USB harddisks which I connected via a USB hub.
For the future I would like to store the many TBs wirelessly on like a "stack" of Time Capsules. (One having the LAN cable from my Internet Router and the others just wirelessly working in the same network.)
I am not sure why this is discussed nowhere online. Maybe it is dumb to do or something, but I really don't mind spending additional $ in order to be as cable-less as I can. (Would not like to buy NAS devices that need many LAN cable connections and stuff.)
    *So again... My vision is:*
*- an imac on the desk*
*- my mbp in the bedroom*
*- 3 - 5 Time Capsules on the desk, offering access to my (TC stored) files via any of my two computers.*
Is this possible? Is it hard to configure?
    Best regards,
    Chris

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
If all those Time Capsules are in the same place, it would be a lot cheaper just to connect multiple external disk drives to one Time Capsule through a USB hub. You don't need the networking/Wi-Fi capability of multiple Time Capsules.

  • Would like to buy TC to replace AE for iMac and MBP; questions

    hi all--
currently i have a dual-band airport extreme on bridge mode connected by ethernet to my AT&T Uverse wireless router. we have several Airport Express' and an ATV2 in the house and the 2 wireless connections; the g put out by Uverse, and an n put out by the AE. I switch to either one depending on location. I have a WD 1TB drive hooked up to my 750GB iMac via FW800. for years that was fine as the iMac was the main computer and i just worried about it's backups.
now we have upgraded a 2007 MacBook to a new MBPro w/ a 500GB SSD, 12 GB RAM, and an i7 chip. needless to say, now THIS computer has become pimary, as it blazes!! but now since there's so much info on it, it really needs to be backed up as well.
i'm OK with basic/moderate connectivity, but sometimes get confused by more complex issues. so let me throw my wants at you. i'm hoping that i can buy the 3TB TC to replace the AE and WD drive, split the TC drive into 2 partitions, and keep the iMac hooked up to it via ethernet, and let the MBPro back up wirelessly to it's own partition.
i guess this might be pretty basic and obvious, but before i buy all this and sell my old equipment, i'd like to make sure it should work. i've never set up a TC before, but i hope that i can just tell it to use the prior settings for the AE to get most setup issues out of the way. and i'm not quite sure how (or when in the process) to partition the TC drive, assuming i can.
if someone can advise me whether this setup is possible, and how to (or a link on how to) partition to TC drive for the 2 computers that would be fantastic. the main reason i'm unsure about doing this is that on Apple's TC page, they really only seem to discuss all computers backing up wirelessly, which would be silly for the iMac since they're side-by-side.
any thoughts for me, my faithful bretheren?

You cannot partition the TC drive but the two computers can use TM to their own areas without any need for you to intrude.. That part Apple do a good job of. The backup sparse bundle is effectively a disk image and the computer keeps track of it by virtual of serial numbers.. you will have no issues.
And the iMac can use ethernet which will be much faster.. you should do both backups initially by ethernet.. once completed the MBP can backup via wireless.. but the speed of wireless will make a mockery of your SSD.. wow, 500GB SSD.. !!
The TC should be relatively easy to slot into place of the AE.. it is really the same thing.. but I sure would NOT sell it all off until you get everything working.. and I would still keep the firewire drive just as a further backup.. there is nothing wrong with using a different software and then leaving the FW drive in a friend or relatives house for a rainy day.

  • Two questions:  pro tools HD compatbility.  iMac vs MBP.

I'll first start off with the question regarding Pro Tools HD compatibility. When it says "compatible", what is this meaning exactly? I'm transferring to Belmont University for Music Business/Production next semester and have contacted the studio manager and he said they mainly use Pro Tools HD in the campus studios. I already have Pro Tools LE 7 with an Mbox, so I'll be able to take projects from the studio on a firewire drive into Pro Tools LE for editing.
But I'm curious if "compatible" means that I'll be able to open my projects recorded in a Pro Tools studio in Logic Pro later on or if it means that I could use Logic Pro with the Pro Tools HD interface in the studio and record directly into Logic Pro? The studio manager told me that all the studios are equipped with Powermac G5s and everything I need will be there, but I want the ability to take my stuff away on a FW drive (oh, another question...any recommendations on firewire drives?) and work independently on my own system. Which leads to my next question....
In my email to him, I also asked about the importance of owning a laptop over a desktop and he said it wasn't imperative to have a laptop since the studios were equipped with Powermacs. I know if money wasn't an issue the Powermac is the best choice for audio production, but I am a student, and I cannot afford to buy a Powermac with sufficient RAM plus a display.......I was highly considering a Macbook Pro, but after realizing that I would be carrying my hard drive around more than my computer, it has me wondering about an iMac. I know the 2 gb RAM limit is a downfall for this system, but I would have that limit in the MBP also, so that doesn't affect anything between comparing the two. I have configured both systems with the education discount and Applecare:
    15" MacBook Pro: $2,898.00
    -2.16GHz Intel Core Duo
    -2GB 667 DDR2 - 2x1GB SO-DIMMs
    -100GB Serial ATA drive @ 7200 rpm
    -MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
    -SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    -AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
    -Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
    -AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Pro/PowerBook (w/or w/o Display) - Auto-enroll
    -15.4-inch TFT Display
    20" 2.0 GHz iMac: $2,056.00
    -2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    -250GB Serial ATA drive
    -ATI Radeon X1600/256MB VRAM
    -SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)
    -Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X - U.S. English
    -Accessory kit
-AppleCare Protection Plan for iMac - Auto-enroll
    -20-inch widescreen LCD
    -2GHz Intel Core Duo
    -AirPort Extreme
    -Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
So, with portability no longer being a great concern, for system performance, which would be the best system? I will be using Pro Tools LE 7 for editing/mixing and Logic Pro for MIDI/creating music with virtual instruments. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hey Scott.
Check out the "Benchmark Song 2" thread on this forum. That will show some performance test on different computers.
About the choice of computer, well, all I can say is get the best of what you can afford. Logic runs nicely on both those machines by all reports. I would also like to say that the Mac Pros (new Powermacs) should be out before the end of the year and will smoke both of these computers. And the price should be comparable to the MacBook Pro.

  • Screen Sharing: iMac -- 2010 MBP 17"?

I am thinking of buying a 27" iMac to run FCP andI wish to use my old 2010 MBP 17" laptop as a second monitor. Can I use Screen Sharing to do this?

I used my old spider2 to create a new profile for the laptop. IF anyone needs it let me know and I'll be happy to e-mail it out.

  • Advice Needed on Rebuilding OSX SL on iMac and MBP

I am rebuilding my iMac and MacBook Pro from the scratch with Snow Leopard. At the moment, I have almost completed installing the operating system, system updates and 3rd party apps on my iMac.
The question is: Can I just clone the iMac drive with all the ready-to-use system to MBP and made some adjustment in MBP (e.g. hostname, etc)?
The iMac is 2008 Alu while the MBP is 2008 unibody.
The goal is not to repeat installing the whole thing again and I would like to have as-close-as-possible mac between the two.
    Thanks....

NO. don't even try that. it will result in either completely unbootable or a seriously malfunctioning system.

what you can do is use migration or setup assistant. do a wipe and install on the MBP. on the first boot after that you'll get setup assistant which will ask if you want to import your data from another mac. choose that option and migrate from the imac. use either ethernet or firewire connection. don't try to migrate over wireless.

  • Pros Cons - iMac vs MBP (used as a desktop)

New Apple convert here. I've been searching forums for days but haven't yet found up-to-date answers to my questions. If you have some time, please continue reading! :-)
I just bougt the new iPad Air--yay! It'll probably never leave my side.
I also just bought a MBP retina, late 2013, 8GB ram, 2.4 GHz i5, 256 flash storage to replace our dying Dell desktop.
My background and estimated usage: I'm a homeschooling mom and also a writer/blogger. I am a huge content consumer and just getting into more content creation as I learn more about video and photo editing and web design. Not a professional photographer or videographer by any means, but a heavy Internet user with strong curiousity about everything a Mac is capable of. And don't forget I'll be relying heavily on our computers as we homeschool our children.
That all being said, here's my dilemma:
Should I buy a maxed out iMac to future proof for our family for a long as possible OR should I keep the MBP with mediocre specs and buy a cheap external display so that I can have that feeling of a desktop with more screen real estate that I already miss?
    Some notes:
Yes, I realize the main difference is portability and that an iMac could be configured to have better specs for less $$ than a laptop.
I love the idea of portability, but in reality I feel like if I had an external display I'd mainly use the laptop as a desktop. (I originally bought a Thunderbolt display but returned because it was very expensive and I anticipate an upgrade from Apple in the future.)
I also tend to overestimate my future usage. I could spend the next 5 years just checking Facebook, or I really could get into graphic design and video editing, so I'm not sure if I should just go entry-level or if I should max out the specs to future proof our investment. Money is a huge factor, but if we're going to do this, we want to do it right.
Questions about iMac vs using a MBP as a desktop:
1.Since having my MBP for the last few weeks, I feel like I'm charging it constantly. At least twice a day. Is this normal? And is it a reason to get an iMac?
    2. Will using a MBP so heavily and hooked up to an external display for long periods of time have any negative effect on its battery or life or its screen since the MBP lid will be closed and the screen subjected to more heat?
    3. Suggestions for a decent but inexpensive monitor to use if we end up keeping the MBP?
    4. Any other reasons I haven't considered as to whether a desktop or a laptop + display would be better for my situation?
    5. When plugged into an external display, does the MBP run off the battery or does it switch to AC power without affecting the battery?
    6. For my suggested use, should I keep the somewhat baseline specs of the MBP that I already have, or should I upgrade everything (just in case)?
    7. Or, should I get the best iMac I can afford and if I ever feel like I really need a laptop, I can always buy a cheap one or save for another MBP?
As long as there are no real cons to using the MBP with an external display and that it can take heavy but basic usage day in and out without shortening it's life, I'm leaning toward keeping the MBP and buying a cheap external display until Apple updates the Thunderbolt display. I just feel like if I ever *want* to work in another room or outside the house, I'm going to appreciate having a laptop that functions as both laptop and desktop.
I'd appreciate any feedback. I know this was ridiculously long, but I need help from those who know! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It seems that you have this pretty well thought out, the iMac does have more "power" and a larger display, etc...
    The MBP has the portability.
It really depends on how much you need to be mobile with it, it sounds as though it would be used more like a desktop than "I have to have my computer with me" kind of thing. Video and graphics will be easier to deal with on the iMac, no battery to consider, will probably run considerably cooler than a portable  in clamshell mode, no external monitior to deal with...
Problem is you can't "grab and go".
You ned to really consider how it will be used the most, the iMac will give more bang for the buck, if having to take it with is not the overriding concern.
You can also use a cheaper portable/iPad for those occasions that you need to have a device with you.
    A decision for you make.
    All the Best
I'm sure others will chime in as well

  • Mac or PC ... And - iMac or MBP

I know I am at the apple site but please do not be biased. I am gonna use my computer for high school work (I might have to bring it in to school once or twice - Please keep in mind people are going to try to steal macs more ), surf the web, programming, web/graphic design, and video editing. Also iMac/MBP? and which specs and screen size of the one you recommend! Thanks!

Get a mac my friend ! And make it a macbook pro. The laptops are powerful enough to run any software there is for computers of personal use (i want to avoid saying pc becoz it means ~windows). If its screen space you want, 15 inch hi-resolution will do and if really necessary, the 17 inch is always there with hi-res option also (if you are willing to spend money for the best).  And if you find yourself needing to use windows, Installing it on your macbook pro is so simple and there are facilities already there to help you with that. On the other hand a windows pc, would bring other things into your life, like having to deal with computer infections and all that (i have been a windows user my whole life and have owned a macbook pro for about two weeks now.). Besides if you are going to be doing business youl look more proffessional writting your stuff on a Macbook pro..

  • Mac pro vs imac vs mbp

I'm in the market for a new home setup and was wondering what opinions are for mac pro, imac, etc.
I currently have a 2009 mbp with 6 gb ram and use it to mostly run cs5, streaming videos, and copy large files.
I was wondering if it would be beneficial for me to get a mac pro and if it would give me that much more speed and performance running cs5.  I have already a nice external monitor which i use for photo editing.   While I like the power and expandibility of the MP i like the high resolution 2560x1440 screen of the imac and its a simpler setup, albeit will become obsolete faster.  Still ***** not to be able to put a ssd in the imac unless pre -ordered.
Basically wanted to get opinions on the new mac pros, imacs, and also how they compare to the new mbp which i hear at quad core i7 may outperform the base mac pro (they also now allow 16 gb ram)...is it a good time to buy or are updates expected....

So long as there is enough memory for Photoshop CS5 to use, the new 2011 MacBook Pro quad-core offers outstanding performance approaching that of the Mac Pro.

  • Migrating Aperture library from iMac to MBP

OK, I figured out how to get stuff from my desktop to my MBP through Airport, but I'm wondering about the best way to do this with my Aperture library. On y MBP I have Aperture 2 installed. On the iMac is a library of thousands of images on Aperture 1.2. What's the best way to get that library over to the laptop and in Aperture 2?

    Hi Tamandra;
I can tell you that the format of the Aperture library changed between 1.2 and 2. I have never tried what you are asking to do. My suggestion would be to repost in Aperture Forum. Someone over there should know what to do for sure.

  • Clone iMac to MBP, from TM backup. Best method?

    Hi,
We have a new iMac (OS 10.8x) in the office which is used for processing shipments (print labels, invoices etc)
The iMac has Parallels & Win7 on it because its required to also run FedEx software for label printing.
The iMac is backed up using Time Machine.
We would like to clone this iMac onto a MacBook Pro (2.66 15" Core2Duo) so that if anything were to happen to the iMac, we can simply connect the MBP & continue working.
The MBP currently has 10.6 clean install.
What is the best way to go about duplicating the entire iMac onto the MBP, including parallels & Win7?
Do we need to upgrade the MBP to 10.8 first?
    Thanks for your advice

Does it make sense to backup from one partition to another essentially on the TM drive in addition to backing up my other drives or should I exclude those?
That would make little sense unless you're concerned about accidental deletion of a file/folder on those volumes. If not, then exclude those volumes.
One of those partitions contains my Tiger system clone, but I don't think I want a backup of a backup. Do I?
IMHO that would make even less sense, and it almost certainly should be excluded.
It's mostly a matter of common sense. A backup is 1) to protect against the possibility of a hard drive going bad. If the volumes in question are on the same drive as the TM backup, if the drive goes bad it's all gone, so there's little point in having TM back them up 2) to protect against accidental (or deliberate but mistaken) deletion of a file. If that's a concern, have TM back up the appropriate partitions.
    Regards.

  • I'm Unable to 'double click' when screen sharing from iMac to MBP

I want to use my new iMac to display the Macbooks screen but the double click doesn't seem to work ( most of the time ) !
I set up realVNC client on the iMac as well and the same problem happens, I can connect OK to windows hosts and can double click OK. This is a really odd problem it must be related to the VNC server built into OSX, is there a better/less buggy one that's free to use and easy enough to install ? I've never actually tried VNC to my MBP before.. I've recently started using the Remote desktop client from m$ too which seems OK
I've also managed to get Virtual box to reproducible hang my entire system, I thought thte iMac had overheated and shut down at first, the top gets pretty warm.
I am in love with this thing, 4 cores are definitively better than 2 !
    Simon

I believe I may have fixed this. My wireless router kept on needing resets so I changed its 'channel' to Auto from hard set to 10 ( default setting infact ;0) )..
Since I did that, the Doubleclick on VNC to MBP is working now and no more WIFI router reboots since. I Don't know if this is related to the new iMac on the net seems like a weird coincidence though if not. I can't really think of the reason for this BTW..
