Dictionaries in other languages and translators

Is Apple planning to make dictionaries in other languages available for iBooks? I think it would be a great way to practice reading in other languages! Either an ordinary dictionary in say, French, or a French to English translation dictionary. That would make me very happy.
And the ability to turn the background black for night reading

I'll have a French dictionary ready in a few days if anyone wants to beta test it.
Assume that is for OS X? I'd be interested (tom at bluesky dot org).
No, for the iPad/iPhone. I need to fix one last transition bug, build an icon, and I'm done.
I've had a MacOS X version for a long time: http://etresoft.com/etreref.html
(Note: “I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.” ) The MacOS X dictionaries are free, but there is other stuff there too.
The iPad dictionary will be an expanded version of my Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française 1935. I've improved my cleanup and re-added words removed since the 1835 edition.

  • Dictionaries for other languages?

I have found only American English dictionary in my OS. I would like to add dictionaries for other languages (not translating dictionaries). Does anyone know where I can find more?
    Thanks.

I have found only American English dictionary in my OS.
For spell checking, 10.4 already includes dictionaries for Australian, British, and Canadian English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Swedish.
If you are talking about Dictionary.app, it's possible to add dictionaries if you upgrade to 10.5:

  • Typing other language and downloading msn

how can i type certain language like thai on the macbook? do i have to buy software for it? And when i try to download msn messenger from hotmail..it didn't start. are they not compatible for each others? what should i do???

how can i type certain language like thai on the
macbook? do i have to buy software for it?
There is no need to buy any software. Just go to system preferences/international/input menu and check the box for Thai, plus the box for "show input menu in Finder." Then select Thai in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder and type. You must use a modern Unicode app -- not AppleWorks or Word v.X.
Did you download messenger from here?

  • Why ibooks doesnt have dictionaries in other languages?

So how likely is for me to find an spanish dictionary in ibooks in the upcoming IOS6?

    Ren S. wrote:
currently IOS5 already has a spanish discionary, so I don't understand what are you refering to.
He said he wants a Spanish dictionary for iBooks.  That means he wants a reference dictionary to look up the meaning of words.  iOS 5 only has a spell checking dictionary, which is of no use with iBooks.

  • Pages, other languages, spell check

I have Pages 08 and it serves me well but recently I have needed to use other languages and check spelling. Is there a language pack? Do I have to buy the new version? Other software? Anyone know? I'll bet someone does.
I have tried changing the language in Inspector and in system preferences but it doesn't seem to take effect. Meanwhile Mail is doing spell checks from what I guess  is the source to do this.

Language is an attribute of the text (like bold or color etc) so you have to select the text and apply a language to it from the Inspector.
Not all languages have dictionaries and not all the dictionaries are as comprehensive as the English versions.
You can get extra dictionaries from OpenOffice and add them to your system and there are also 3rd party dictionaries available.

  • Languages and Presenter

    Hi,
I understand that Presenter has a Multilingual support
function, I would like to know if this also changes any audio that
is in the powerpoint presentation or is it only the text on the
    viewer?
I am fairly new to this and am doing a project where I need
to put the whole document into another language. Please can anyone
tell me how I would go about this other than writing the text and
getting the audios recorded in the relevant languages?
    Thanks in advance

The player skin carries text for: German, English, French, Spanish (Spain), Itialian, Dutch, Chinese (simplified), Japaniese, Korean, Poruguese (Brazil), Russian and Turkish. These text lables will display based on the OS language setting of the viewer. You could modify any of these text lables to be in any other language, and, if you are adept enough, could possibly modify the file that holds the text lables and the XML that calls to it to have additional text.
However, for the content of your PPT and the audio associated with it, you would need to have someone or something do that conversion for you. Traditionally called globalization, there are a number of groups that do it out there. Feel free to PM me if you want info on the group we use.

  • Other language dictionaries for Mail and fro that matter TextEdit

I live in France, speak Norwegian in addition to English and French but use my Mac with English as its operating language - have guests who need this function.
Are there any available dictionaries that can be installed so as to allow spell checking in Norwegian and French (and German for that matter) - while writing mail or using TextEdit.

As fa as i know this is a missing function in os x,
if you change the System language then you'll have
the spell check in whatever language you want,
otherwise you have to use another mail application,
like entourage which uses the office dictionaries.
If you are really having problems with this, let us know. There's no need to change the system language to use these spellcheckers: Australian, British, and Canadian English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Swedish. Many other languages can be added with CocoAspell:

At the moment no - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4059 says :
iBooks allows you to look up the definition of words using a built-in English or Japanese language dictionary
So it looks like just the two languages are currently supported

  • Can I get dictionaries for iBooks in other languages?

It's a great feature in iBooks that I can mark a word I don't know and get an explanation from the built-in dictionary.
And it would even greater to get the same support for other languages (e.g. french). Is that possible?

Currently only English and Japanese have built-in support for looking-up words - you can download dictionaries from the store for other languages but they won't work in the same as those two i.e. you'd need to go into the book/dictionary yourself and find the definition.

You are at the mercy of the content owners/copyright holders. They decide what the Apple can sell in each iTS.

I installed elements 12, it won't open, a screen pops up with options for e-12 and 4 other languages.  When I click Elements 12 a screen pops up with a red install icon, I click it and it askes for the serial number. It won't let me type in letters only numbers. I already did the serial number once. How do I get this to work? I don't want to be a programer!

  • How can I turn off other languages on my ipad running ios7?  It has Japanese or Chinese and the international keyboard is set to English.  Thank you.

How can I turn off other languages on my ipad the next generation running ios7?  I have the international language set to English but it's showing a foreign language and sometimes it shows the foreign language with English.  Thank you.

The complete backup and restore procedure is explained in the link above.
If you don't want to do a restore, then your iPad may remain in the unstable state you have for the moment.
You can change the country in the App Store. Have a look at the bottom of the App Store screen, you can change the country and also do the permanent change via Manage > Account.
You can change the language in iTunes via General Preferences > under General tab.

  • HT204411 iTunes store - I live in the German speaking part of Switzerland (and have a credit card address here too) but want to watch films in English, Italian, or French. Why are films not available in these other languages ?

Hello, I live in the German speaking part of Switzerland (and have a credit card address here too) but want to watch films in English, Italian, or French. Why are films not available in these other languages ? Unless I am mistaken, iTunes Switzerland is far from Swiss and does not encourage its people to watch films in the local languages of its country (at least French and Italian would be good too...). Can anyone help ? Do I have to move to Geneva to watch a non French film in French or Lugano to watch a non Italian film in Italian or simply buy a DVD to get round it?

I have the same problem. I want to watch any movies in French (in the original, or subtitled and/or dubbed). But I cannot seem to find any on iTunes. Does iTunes offer any content in other countries (I live overseas) in the languages of those countries?
