Dictionary blocks Finder

Whenever I enter a misspelled or non-existent word in the Dictionary application, the Finder blocks.
Usually, I only have Finder, Word and Dictionary running. Sometimes with iTunes or Safari. After entering the word to look up, I get the 'spinning pizza of death'.
After a long pause, Dictionary gives "no such word" or something like that, like it's supposed to. Quitting Dictionary won't work, neither switching to the Finder. Switching to other applications, on the other hand, will.
Force quitting takes a really long time; I estimate the reaction time after this command is a full minute or so. Force quitting the Finder ends the hanging.
Trying to quit Dictionary first resulted in a forced shut down more than once, everytime costing me progress in Word-files. Force quitting Word won't help. It seems to be something with the interaction between Dictionary and the Finder.
I can't recall having this problem before the transition to universal binary, but that might as well be paranoia.
So now I have to panically avoid misspelling words in the Dictionary... I would really like that to end, because it's a great application.

I use PopChar X and it tells me that Dictionary Uses
Lucida Grande, but I do not know that for a fact, and
based upon what I see, I would agree with your
observation.
Well, I read the text on font management thoroughly and did everything I could to organize my 250+ fonts. Indeed, it was a mess. First, I re-arranged the fonts in the Finder. Then I removed Font Book and replaced it with Suitcase Fusion. It became a bigger mess, but that app auto-activated a lot of fonts for Dictionary, for instance Baskerville.
To be safe, I re-installed all fonts from the OS X installation DVD. I removed Suitcase and turned to manual font management (so no software specially for that). That works fine for all other apps and I've even acquired some sense of total control...
But to no avail!
Dictionary still crashes upon misspelling. Could you give me some additional help?

We have role called XYZ which is assigned to specfic tables in schema ABC.No you don't. Roles are GRANTed (not assigned) to USERS or ROLES, not TABLES.
There are tables in the same schema which dont have the role XYZ.
In these case we need to find the table that dont have XYZ role.

• Are you sure you want to change the extension from... BLOCKS Finder Editing

This is weird and is driving me nuts, but some Macs do not allow further Finder editing of file or folder names if I change their names (usually including numbers, dots and so on) in such a way that I receive the warning:
Are you sure you want to change the extension from..?
After I confirm that I want to change the name, the Finder does it but gets locked for editing (I can do other things) and does not allow any further file or folder editing until I force quit of Finder or reboot the Mac.
I have found that if right after confirming that I want to change the name I select the file and hit return (which selects its name), no problem arises. But I must do it in one or two seconds, or else it will be too late.
IN SUMMARY:
1. Change file or folder name including numbers and dots at the end.
2. Get the message "Are you sure you want to change the extension from..."
3. Confirm that I want to change the name.
4. FROM NOW ON, I CANNOT CHANGE THE NAME OF ANY FILE OR FOLDER UNTIL I FORCE FINDER QUIT. Unless of course I do the trick indicated above real quick!
Any hint? Any way to know what is going on? This could be a bug of Mac OS X 10.4.x or earlier or a problem with a third party application. But how to know what is going on to prevent it? As said, some Macs show this issue, but not others.

Hint: some file or folder name changes are more prone to cause the issue than others. For instance, renaming a folder (and confirming it) as:
Testing.r00
brings the bug 100% of the times.
Any idea of what is going on? Thanks.

The message is a warning that you are doing something that the OS thinks is going to possibly cause a problem. You are creating the situation and the OS is doing nothing other than what you are asking it to do.
I don't know any exact answer why you can't access your files, but I do know that there are a few characters and things that will cause problems because they mimic names of invisible files. When you make a name that is close to being the same it can treat the file as the special one... meaning you can only access it via Terminal.
Ones you cannot use at all: the colon (:), slash (/), single or double period as first characters. (taken from Finder Help with a naming files search) It is best to stay away from any special characters as a rule. Also avoid using a period and 3 character suffix unless it is one that you are purposefully assigning so the file belongs to an application.
That said... even with the over 200 applications on my system I couldn't repeat your Testing.r00 problem. So, I don't know if it may be application related or not.

• How to replace finder blocks when upgrading old CMP descriptors?

Hi,
I have rather old (WL server 6?) descriptors in my hands. The weblogic-cmp-rdbms-jar.xml follows the DTD from http://www.bea.com/servers/wls600/dtd/weblogic-rdbms11-persistence-600.dtd, which includes the finder definitions. I'd like to upgrade the description to follow this schema: http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/910/weblogic-rdbms20-persistence.xsd
Otherwise it's quite understandable, straight-forward work, but that schema no longer includes the finder definitions. My question is, with what and how I can replace the finder blocks in my description? Should I use the weblogic-query - type? Is there any documentation of how to change the finder definitions to that?
Here's an example of my finder block:
<finder> <finder-name>findByTestId</finder-name>
<finder-param>java.lang.Long</finder-param>
<finder-query><![CDATA[ (= test_id $0) ]]></finder-query>
</finder>
Any help or pointers to documentation would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks,
Jani

Took a tip from your response, got it fixed. Here is what I found:
I did a command-i on Mail.app. The top left-hand corner icon in the command-i window was the same as what I had used to replace /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Resources/ApplicationIcon.icns, i.e., it was the desired replaced image, but the image in the "Preview"section of the command-i window was the same as the default image of the Hawk.
So I copied my version of the /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Resources/ApplicationIcon.icns to the Desktop of the affected account. I dragged that image onto the small image window in the upper left hand corner of the command-i window, pasting an identical image on top of what was already there. BUT, the image in the "Preview" field of the command-i window changed from the old default image to be the same as the desired replacement /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Resources/ApplicationIcon.icns image that I had copied to my Desktop.
Problem solved. Not sure where, in a unixy command line sense, the command-i Preview image lives within a user's account.
Weird that this was only an issue with user accounts that had been logged into and whose dock visibly displayed the Mail icon before I replaced it. User accounts whose dock never displayed the Mail icon until after I replaced it were no problem. Very strange. But, fixed. Hopefully, this bandaid will survive reboot

• Data Block Management

In Oracle 9i you can manage your data block in two ways
(1) Automatic segment space management
(2) ManualManagement
In Automatic segment space management , Bit mapped is used for this work.
Can someone explain what is contained in the bitmapp. If possible can u give me a visual diagram of the bit mapped
Thanks

Although I am sure it is a little more complex than this, the conceptual model looks something similar to this.
The first 64K of each datafile is reserved for the space map. Each bit in that 64K maps to a block in the data file (that's a database block, not an O/S level block). So suppose you had something like this in the data file:
Tab1 uses blocks 2 to 10
Tab 2 uses blocks 11 to 15 and
Index1 uses blocks 20 - 22.
Assume that the datafile contains 25 blocks, and that a 1 indicates that the block is allocated to an object. The bitmap would look like: 0111111111111110000111000
If Oracle needs to allocate 2 blocks for something. it just needs to scan the bitmap for 2 consecutive zeroes, allocate them to the new object, then set them to 1. No need to go through the data dictionary to find free extents, and possibly coalesce space.

• How do I find what table a field is in?

Hi,
If I know a field name, how would I search the Data Dictionary to find the table (or tables) that the field is found in?
For example, I have a program spec that that says field AZSUB is in table MARM, but it is not. How can I find what table this field is actualkly in?
Thanks for your help!
Andy

Hi Andrew,
Just goto se11, enter the data element of that field and clisk on the where used list on the application tool bar. You will get all the tables in which the field appears.
You got find out which would be your appropriate table may be using by the description of the table or the contents or by the links..

• Built in dictionary missing after ios6

My built-in dictionary is missing after updating to IOS6
When I double tap on a word and click "define" button it brings up the "dictionary" block and it says inside the block "would you like to download a dictionary now?"
I then click the "download" button and it looks like it tries to download it, but I don't see the blue progress bar.
It then comes up with a message "no definition found"
Any suggestions on a fix, or if this is a bug that can only be rectified with an update?? I have another iPad and it is running iOS 6 and has a working dictionary.

• 5c Find My iPhone Not Working on Kids Phone

I purchased two iphone 5c's, one for each of my children. All of them have been parental locked, with application installation and safari blocked. Find my iphone has been turned on, then locked on with parental controls. Data is limited to 500 mb per month by verizon.
My son's device works perfectly when I use the "find my iphone" application on icloud.com.
However, my enterprising 15 year old daughter's phone only seems to show up in "Find My iphone" when she is at the house, and even then it is spotty. For example, today I logged in (8:20 cst) to find her phone, it has a grey circle that says "last location yesterday at 5:18". Most of the time when I check, it says "phone unavailable"....yet I will text her, and she'll text me back.
She called me this morning, and while I was on the phone with her, I logged into iCloud...same deal, it couldn't find a current position. So, I know at least that the mobile network was turned on.
I won't get into the reasons to need to track her phone, but I'll just summarize by saying that it's not to just be an overbearing parent. She has impulse control issues which have placed her life in danger several times.
She is doing something that is shutting the tracking down. Any ideas?
Would changing date/time do anything?
What about turning off wifi?
What about turning off mobile data?
Could she have installed an app to block find my iphone? (this only could have occurred on one of the few occasions when I had allowed installation of programs.)
She is extremely bright, and has found something or been told something by a friend.
Please help!

• How does the filesystem handle bad blocks?

Let's suppose your hard drive develops a bad sector on it. What happens?
I remember early products where the OS would constantly try to store new files right on top of the bad block, find the file couldn't be written/verified, then would write it elsehere... then the next time it would do the same thing again, expecting the block to "heal" I guess
What happens on MacOS (extended, journaled) if it's writing a file and finds a bad block in freespace? Does the OS know how to "cocoon off" or tag the bad block as bad and not use it?
Now what happens if the bad block develops underneath an active file? What's the recovery pattern? Or is there none - does it just leave the block bad permanently? Is there any way to fix that?

Boot your computer from the DVD that came with it, and use Disk Utility to check the status of the disk. Select the disk and look at the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom. If it displays anything other than Verified, then the disk isn't going to last much longer.
Modern hard disks don't develop "bad sectors" that the OS needs to handle. The disk drive itself automatically remaps bad sectors to spare unused sectors in a way that is transparent to the OS. When too many of those bad sectors are remapped, the S.M.A.R.T. status will report an error.
What you're describing is a failing disk. It's more than likely the early stages of a total failure, rather than just a bunch of bad sectors. Same thing happened to my MacBook a few months ago. After about two hours, it failed completely. I picked up a new drive on the way home, and restored it from Time Machine overnight. The only data that I lost was an iTunes purchase that I made that morning (iTunes Support let me download it again). You have a backup, right?
It's also possible that you've either run out of free space on the startup disk, or you have a process running that's consuming too much CPU and/or RAM resources. If that's the case, a reboot will clear it (until whatever caused it happens again).

• EXPERT DAY REQUEST!!!!! Laserjet M602 postscript feature values (specifically, "setpagedevice")?

Pasted previously on the Community Home/Printing and Digital Imaging/Printers - LaserJet forum but thought I'd take advantage of the "HP Expert Day" and so am copying the posting on the "printer and all-in-ones" board:
I have just spent two hours trying without success to find the values that the Laserjet M602 recognises in the postscript "%%BeginFeature" dictionary block for "setpagedevice"; to select the input tray mostly but other stuff in general. Does anyone know where this info can be found? I don't have much hair left to pull out...!

• Need to open and resave files

How do you use Automator/Applescript/QuickTime/Preview to batch open and resave folders full of files.
1. Video files (mainly .flv) in QuickTime Player resaved as .mov
2. .eps files in Preview resaved as .pdf with the original name
I can see how to locate and open files from the Finder, but can't find any steps for saving or controlling the formats.
1. How do you get Automator to step through each file in turn, checking they are the right format, resaving until all are done?
2. How do you get Preview to do anything (it seems to be unscriptable)? In Snow Leopard it now strips the names off opened .eps files, making them Unnamed, an added complication.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Peter

Hi peter. The following code is an outline for what you want to do. Unfortunately the part within the tell application blocks is just pseudo code. You need to open up script editor and file-open dictionary to find the code you will need. I think I might have quicktime somewhat right but don't really remember. Also preview.app is not really scriptable so you aren't going to be able to do much without GUI scripting or a scriptable program which can convert esp to pdf.
Hope this helps some though.
repeat with currentFile for every item in (choose folder)
if currentFile ends with ".flv"
tell application "Quicktime Player"
open currentFile
save currentFile as movie
close currentFile
end tell
else if currentFile ends with ".esp"
tell application "Generic Viewer of Some Sort"
open currentFile
save currentFile as pdf
close currentFile
end tell
else
display dialog currentFile & " no program specified"
end if
end repeat
