I am running ML 10.8.2  I am going to dashboard and entering a word in the widget and nothing happens.
As far as I know the prefs language and text, I have chosen US English.

  • Personal dictionary doesn´t work

Hi! I´m struggling with the personal dictionary, which refuses to work. I have tried various combinations of languages, keyboards etc., but it just won´t let me use the shortcuts I make. And it´s really annoying to have to write down for example my whole e-mail address every single time...
    Any ideas out there? Thanks!
    JM

Hi and thanks for your answer!
It´s not so much about words as it´s about shortcuts. For example, instead of writing your e-mail address, on my iPhone I could make a shortcut like "@@", and the phone would fill in my e-mail address. Or "hnd" would write "Have a nice day!". On iOs you can make as many shortcuts as you like, and it looks like you can do it as well on the Sony, except it doesn´t work...
Are you saying this is not possible on a Sony?
    Thanks again!

  • IBooks dictionary doesn't work

I thought about posting this in the iBooks forum, but it appears to be only for publishers of books, not for users of the app. (Which is dumb.)
Anyway, I noticed about a week ago that my dictionary no longer works in iBooks. When I highlight a word and tap "Define," it says "No definition found." No matter what word it is. The buttons for "Search Web" and "Search Wikipedia" work, but that's beside the point.
And it continues to happen - even after yesterday's iBooks upate that Apple released (which also didn't fix its excruciating slowness). This happens on any book. All other functionality works - highlighting, making a note, searching, etc.
    Anyone else have this problem?

There is no on/off. To get the definition of a word it is necessary to double tap it to bring up the dialogue box. Selecting Define should enable the dictionary. If this is not happening try a reset is hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo apparently appears.

  • Reset Keyboard Dictionary doesn't work

Hi everybody, i have tried several times to reset the keyboard dictionary to get rid of all the silly suggestions when i am typing a message or an Email, but it doesn't seems to work.
How can i reset it for sure?
    Thanx

Do you expect 'Reset' to get rid of those spellings that you've rejected or those spellings that were presented as options?
You may have inverted your expectation compared with what 'Reset' actually does?

  • Safari Bug: Look-up (dictionary) doesn't work after using Youtube on new 6.1 on mountain lion and the newest version for Mavericks

One of sever glitches that led me to "downgrade" back to mountain lion.  However, wasn't thinking and updated safari to 6.1 and I now have the same problem.  It took me a while to figure out, but now it is completely reproducible.  When I visit youtube and watch a video.  Safari's look-up, the three finger tap dictionary shortcut, no longer works.  It just highlights the word momentarily but never completes the function.
I'm going to restore my laptop again to factory setting and just not upgrade the software to the new Safari update.
The main issues/bugs I had with Mavericks, even after a clean install were:
    - pdf's very freezing while scrolling for a few seconds
    - frequent spinning pin wheels
    - other small random bugs I can't recall at the moment.
    Macbook Air mid 2012 i7 8g ram  256gbHD

Thanks, but the problem seems to show up only after extended use of the computer.Today, for example,I didn't go to work, and turned the PC on in the morning, and by early afternoon,it was getting more and more sluggish. It finally got so bad that it locked up,and even CTL-ALT-DEL wouldn't work.

  • English - english dictionary doesn't work

I have Firefox 32 and Windows 7. My add-ons manager says that English - English Dictionary 1.5 is installed, but it isn't working. There's no "ABC" icon and clicking a word does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

You may try to uninstall and get the latest version. If you are still experiencing the problem, please try any other dictionary alternatives

  • OS X Yosemite: Dictionary doesn't work.

    Hello.
After updating to OS X Yosemite, dictionary stopped working.
By 'stopped working' what I mean is: when I click - with three fingers - over a word, a ballon pop's up and says that he can't find any reference!!
On OS X Mavericks, it was working perfectly!
Any idea why this is happening?
    Thank you.

  • Dictionary shortcut doesn't work for me

I found out that we can look up vocabularies on Safari while pressing ControlCommandD. However, I'm unable to bring this feature out no matter how many times I pressed this shortcut.(I even pressed it for 20 sec and nothing happened.)
Yes, I have went to system preferences-keyboard shortcuts-"look up in dictionary", and it is indeed checked. I even tried to change the shortcut setting and it still didn't work.
Any ideas what's wrong and how can I get it to work? Any known programs that may cause the problem? (I have LiveDictionary installed, would this affect the shortcut key?)
(and no, I don't want to use LiveDictionary to replace the build in dictionary feature because it is only a shareware)

    Thank you for the reply.
I only tried this feature on "Safari"; It is a cocoa application, no??
The thing is, it doesn't work. I do not know why. I can't figure out what is causing the problem.
system preferences-keyboard&mouse-keyboard shortcuts tab-"look up in dictionary" <-- it is checked.
So, I don't know why it wouldn't work. I moved my cursor over to the word and pressed controlcommandD for 15-20sec. I even highlighted the word, yet nothing happened.
I still need help on this...

  • My Dictionary Wikipedia doesn't work: The Wikipedia server has a temporary problem.

My Dictionary Wikipedia doesn't work: It only says this, 'The Wikipedia server has a temporary problem.'

What kind of information do you need?
Apart from what I have told you, the only thing I can think of is about four weeks ago, an Apple Support guy was trying to help solve another issue with the Help Menus not working properly.
He got me to change the DNS address in my network settings, and after trying something, I returned it to the original address.
This didn't solve that problem, but I noticed the junk mail that I've been getting every day for a long time ceased, and also I think this might have had something to do with the Wikipedia stopping working, as I noticed it not long after.

  • Mail.app redirect script doesn't work

I'm trying to script a batch process to redirect selected messages in the Mail application. I found a nifty script on macosxhints.com--only one problem: it doesn't work with 10.4's Mail.
The script fails ("variable is undefined") when trying to get the result of:
    redirect message with opening window
According the the Mail dictionary, redirect should return an "outgoing message". Instead it appears to be undefined, and I can't figure out how to manipulate the newly created message to change the recipient, sender, etc.
    Any ideas?

has anyone gotten this script to work with 10.4.6?

  • Updated to 10.4.9 and now weather widget doesn't work-what to do?

    Hello-
Just updated to 10.4.9 tonight and for the first time since I bought this computer in August, the weather widget doesn't work.
Would anyone happen to know what I could do to get this to work. I am connected to the internet, I can access the accuweather.com that I think this widget connects to, I restarted and reset PRAM (not even sure if that has anything to do with it).
I just don't even know where to go from here to troubleshoot. Any suggestions would be appreciated... Thanks.

Just for the record... There is quite a bit of discussion about widgets. I only use the dictionary and iStat. I use WeatherPop in the taskbar, which resides in the taskbar...
It did it again this morning. I let it boot all the way, and then I went into system preferences to find the resolution that the display was using. It was 1400x1050. But there was a second display preferences window open. Basically... The computer was "mirroring" to a second non-existent monitor. I ran through the "detect displays" and it got rid of the second setting.
I've never had a second monitor hooked to the machine, and I've never messed with the display settings, other than to change wallpaper. I'm not sure how or why it turned on, but I think it's off now... Weird that it only did it every now and then.

  • Google page translate doesn't work

    Hi,
Google translate page translate doesn't work in firefox 29.0.1 (mac osx).
Translate.google.com -> type in url in the box and then translate gives me
"This page was not retrieved from its original location over a secure connection."
and then nothing happens. I cleared caches and cookies, also did safe mode to disable all add-ons, still doesn't work.
Google translate does work in other browsers (Opera 12.16).
Can someone tell me how to fix this?
    Thanks

You can look at an extension like one of these.

  • How can you turn off the spell checker in Firefox? (The menu option doesn't work.)

There was a solution to this I came across a long time ago, but I don't remember what it was. I want to turn off my spell checker in Firefox. The usual instructions given for doing this are to go into Options->Advanced and de-select "Check my spelling as I type". This doesn't work. Period. And this is a bug that has been around for a long time in Firefox.
What's a way to disable this? I don't like seeing a bunch of red lines under correctly spelled words that just happen to not be in Firefox's default dictionary, and I don't want to have to add things to my dictionary either.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

It doesn't work. I check the spellchecker box restart and uncheck it restart but it won't work.
It's the US version of Aurora i am using.

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
*Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
*Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
*Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
